S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You've heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg's landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg's results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp's attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp's, are satisfied with the results. From the tp's perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp's, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

Gilsonite is a lustrous black material that can be easily crushed into a chocolate-colored powder. It is a solid but relatively soft, lightweight hydrocarbon that visually resembles the volcanic glass obsidian. It was once thought to be a type of coal, but because it is thermoplastic it melts rather than bums. Gilsonite is found in commercial quantities only in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah and western Colorado, where it forms vertical, nearly parallel veins of varying depth, width, and length. Gilsonite from different veins has different properties, most notably variations in softening point and solubility. These differences result in its use in a variety of industrial applications. Gilsonite's earliest commercial uses were in varnishes, buggy paints, and beer vat linings. Eventually it came to be used in more than 160 products ranging from inks to explosives. It is exported from the United States to most industrialized countries throughout the world. Today, due to competition from synthetics and other hydrocarbon products, its use has narrowed to several specific industries. Although sold mostly as a commodity, current research is focused on applications for gilsonite as a value added product. Historical Overview The discovery of gold in California and the dawn of the mining era in Nevada, Colorado, and Utah around 1850 brought a wave of prospectors to the western United States. One of those pioneers, Samuel H. Gilson, is generally credited with a major role in the discovery of gilsonite. The material now known as gilsonite was discovered several times from the late 1860s through the mid-1880s. It was William P. Blake who, after receiving samples of the material, wrote a paper in 1885 describing "a new variety of asphaltum from the Uinta Mountains." He termed the material uintaite. Although Sam Gilson was not the first to discover the mineral, he was an-inventor who used gilsonite in products that he patented. It was his conviction that the substance was of great value, which caused some to refer to it as gilsonite. The term Gilsonite became the registered trademark of the American Gilsonite Co., and it continues to be in use today. When the first company was formed to mine this substance in 1886 it was named the Gilsonite Manufacturing Co. This firm acquired many gilsonite mining claims and marketed a varnish made from the material. It was the unusual properties of gilsonite varnish that attracted the attention of Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Co. In 1889 Anheuser-Busch bought out Gilson's interests and formed the Gilson Asphaltum Co. Busch had been importing asphalt from Sicily for use in lining beer barrels and saw gilsonite as being more readily available and cheaper. Although gilsonite did not work well in this application, Busch did acquire a large number of mining claims in the Uinta Basin. In 1903 the parent firm of Gilson Asphaltum financed the building of an 85-km railroad from near Grand Junction, CO, to Dragon, UT, to haul gilsonite ore to market. Underground mining was initially centered near Dragon and then later at Bonanza, UT, as different veins were mined. The railway was abandoned in 1937 in favor of truck transportation. In 1938 Gilson Asphaltum changed its name to Barber Asphalt Co., the predecessor of Barber Oil Corp. In 1946 Barber Oil teamed with Standard Oil of California to form a partnership, American Gilsonite Co., which today has its operational headquarters at Bonanza, UT. Barber Oil investigated many new uses for gilsonite, including the making of petroleum derivatives such as gasoline. This work led to the construction of a 116-km pipeline to carry slurried gilsonite to a refinery in Colorado for the production of gasoline, fuel oil, and coke. Pipeline operations began in 1957 but stopped when the economics of competing with petroleum became unfavorable, and the refinery was sold in 1973. In 1981 Standard Oil (later Chevron) became the sole owner of American Gilsonite and remained so until 1991, when it sold its interest to Stratford Enterprises Co. of Tulsa, OK. The companies have since been merged and now operate under the name American Gilsonite Co. with headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT. American Gilsonite continues to be the world's largest miner and supplier of the mineral. The American Asphalt Association was formed in 1902 by former stockholders in Gilson Asphaltum. This company mined various gilsonite claims until it was dissolved in 1953 and its properties were sold to American Gilsonite and Gordon S. Ziegler and Associates. The Utah Gilsonite Co. was established in 1920 and mined several claims until 1952, when its holdings were sold to Gordon Ziegler. Several other gilsonite mining ventures have been pursued in Utah, although they were significantly smaller in scale than those described above. There are currently three companies which mine gilsonite resin in Utah. They are American Gilsonite Co., Ziegler Chemical & Mineral Corp., and Lexco.

A comprehensive, harmonic and sustainable development has always been a real concern of state policy makers. To reach such development, regional planning is an approach which is widely applied. This paper deals with policies adopted by a given country with rich mineral deposits, in order to accomplish a mining growth as well as economic development in relatively poor regions. In this regards, first, some worldwide experiences belonging to China, with large scale mining operations and Nigeria with a small scale mining industry, are studied. The mining industry in Iran is then considered as a case study. The study continues by categorizing and prioritizing Iranian regions based on their mining potential and the degree of development, using statistical analysis and Taxonomy and AHP techniques. Results obtained serve to provide recommendations as to where capital investments in the mining industry would produce highest returns. The approach used, together with the practical policies suggested in this paper, can be used to adapt appropriate strategies for mining development in a way that contributes to regional development and a more effective income distribution.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and Mineral Processing Systems (MPSI) merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare design pro¬cedures and the research upon which they were based. Several semiautogenuous (SAG) mill analyses are compared using Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then used in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria. Given the opportunity to compare the total philosophies and methods of several companies involved in the design and fabrication of grinding mills, it was important to first develop the comparison method and ground rules. One option was to compare analytical methods by details such as numerical techniques and accuracies. However, this option was discarded in favor of a more general approach. The question that was finally posed was in two parts. Given an identical mill requirement: • What would be the difference in the analytical design result, and to what aspect of the analytical process could this difference be attributed? • What would be the difference in approaches to obtaining the final hardware in subcontracting, both in specifying and Quality Assurance surveillance? By using this comparative approach, questions of relative conservativeness and reliability would automatically be answered.

Research on the low-potential hydrophobic state of pyrite with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector, is reported to help explain and understand the fundamental aspects of the N2TEC flotation process, which was originally developed for the improved recovery of gold from refractory auriferous sulfide ores. Typically in the N2TEC process, air is replaced by nitrogen as the flotation gas, and potassium amyl xanthate is used as collector for the reactive auriferous pyrite particles. The first N2TEC flotation process was commissioned at Lone Tree in Nevada in March 1997 and has been in operation ever since. On the basis of electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements, the low-potential, low-pH hydrophobic state of pyrite has been examined as a function of flotation variables such as pH, gas-phase composition, collector concentration and pyrite potential.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been recognized by the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) as the most common job-related disease in the United States. Roughly 30 million workers are exposed to excessive noise levels or toxins that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR)is investigating noise controls to reduce operator overexposures caused by haul trucks used in underground metal/non-metal mines. To identify the most significant contributors to the overall sound level, Source Path Contribution (SPC) analysis was conducted. Noise dosimetry and time-motion analysis were also conducted to quantify operator noise exposure. SPC analysis determined that, under high idle conditions, a source near a hydraulic pump mounted to the rear of the engine and the engine cooling fan were the major noise sources. The time-motion/dosimetry analysis showed that the operators accumulated more than 90% of their noise exposures while they were hauling ore to the dump site and traveling back to the load site unloaded.

Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep ( > 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

Simulator technology has advanced to the point where the cost of mining equipment simulators is beginning to make commercial sense. Simulator-based evaluation allows operators or potential employees to be assessed in a pseudo-real environment under surface and underground mining conditions. Simulator training also allows operators to be exposed to emergency and advanced situations such as brake or steering failure or a tireblowout. ThoroughTec, of South Africa, provides simulator equipment to the mining industry. The company’s various packages of simulator products provide an unbiased evaluation score that removes human error from the assessment process. This same evaluation score is also presented at the end of normal training or refresher training sessions. In this way, the simulator helps eliminate bad habits and improve efficiencies.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

INTRODUCTION The slurry shield method was developed in Japan in 1963 and its experimental tunnelling work was performed in 1965. Although the history of this method is short compared with the conventional shield method in Japan, many companies such as Tekken Construction, Okumura Gumi, Nishimatsu Kensetsu, etc. are engaged at present in developing their own unique system of the slurry shield method. The ground of Japan is generally pervaded with ground water and a large number of districts are covered with soft ground, which is composed of fine sand, silt and clay, etc. Therefore, the conventional shield method has always used compressed air with various kinds of auxiliary methods. However, with this method there have been experienced numerous troubles such as ground settlements, lowering of ground water, oxygen shortage within the tunnel, and so forth. The slurry shield method has been developed with the above background. In recent years remarkable progress has been made from the engineering viewpoint in applying this method to driving various kinds of tunnels such as road tunnels, subways, water supply and sewer tunnels, and other tunnels. INTRODUCTION Design of supports for underground chambers in rock has undergone considerable development. This becomes evident when comparing support dimensions of subway station caverns built in the U.S. over the past fifteen years. The Porter Square Station cavern, which is a part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Red Line extension, is the latest in this series. It is approximately 168 m (550 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and 14 m (45 ft) high, and has a permanent support of light steel ribs imbedded in a 0.4 m nominal (15 in) shotcrete lining. An extensive construction control instrumentation program made it possible to evaluate the performance of the cavern and its support. This evaluation, which is presented in this paper, was the objective of a research project sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) and jointly conducted by Haley and Aldrich, and MIT. The actually used design procedure was compared with other approaches, notably procedures based on Finite Element analyses and empirical rock mass classification methods. Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without king reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county mad and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.

The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

University research in the U.S. consists of three components; faculty, funding, and graduate students or postdoctorals. Individual faculty is the unit area of research that is not limited, although faculty normally performs research in their areas of expertise. Faculty can and often do join with other faculty in multidisciplinary research. Faculty research achievements or reputation reflects the standing of the program and university. Therefore, research is highly encouraged and regarded within the university community. Graduate students are the work force of faculty research and doctoral students are preferred for high-quality products. The federal government provides the majority of funding sources, with the remainder coming from industry, state government and others. Compared with other engineering majors, the mining engineering programs in the U.S. are unique in that they: ? Are small in terms of the number of programs, and number of faculty and students in each program. ? Serve a single industry (i.e., mining) and are thus cyclic, reflecting the up and down economic state of the mineral industries. Enrollment statistics during the past 70 years show that a cycle consists of approximately 30 years with the first 10 years up, followed by 20 years down. ? Have curriculum designed to emphasize and thus serve for either the coal, hardrock or industrial minerals industries. These unique features make mining engineering programs hard to manage in university environments. Funding for mining research has relied primarily on the federal government, i.e., the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and currently the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The mining industry does not directly perform, nor sponsor research projects. Federal funding provides primarily in-house research. In the last four decades, federal extramural funding was only available when Congress appropriated extra funding in response to mine disasters. For instance, a string of coal mine explosions in the mid to late 1960s prompted Congress to enact the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It provided massive research funding from 1970 to 1983 covering all mining-related subject areas. From 1984 to 1995, federal extramural research funding was minimal, through two generic mineral technology research centers for selected mining engineering programs. In 1995, Congress closed the USBM and transferred the health and safety of miners program to NIOSH. Federally-funded extra-mural research practically stopped from 1995 to 2006. In 2006 and 2007, in response to a series of disasters, including those at Sago, Aracoma, Darby and Crandall Canyon, Congress again appropriated funding for short-term re-search in selected subjected areas such as underground tracking and communication, mine seal and ventilation, and deep cover pillar extraction. Therefore, to develop a meaningful academic mining research program during the past three decades, funding needed to be drawn from other sources such as the mining industries. A ?meaningful? program requires a sufficient amount of consistent funding in order to produce effective results. A review of federally funded extramural research pro-grams shows that a great majority of contractors/grantees are private entities, involving few mining engineering faculty. This, in part, is due to the fact that mining engineering involves so many different subjects. Therefore, a small mining engineering program can only have resources to cover teaching in the core subject areas (i.e., extraction, ground control, ventilation and material handling), at best. In this respect, a successful and meaningful academic mining re-search effort requires strong supporting programs such as geology/geophysics, structural (applied) mechanics, material sciences, compute/software application, etc. Therefore, academic mining research had to rely on private sources such as coal companies, in the author?s case, for sustained funding in the past three decades. Relying on funding from coal companies presents several problems. The projects were small and considered routine consulting projects requiring practical answers in a very short time frame. This is not really suitable for academic research, for which the major goal of research is the training of graduate students. These short-term projects vary with time and mines, most of which are driven by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) or U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM) regulations. So sustained funding under such condition requires broad experience of coal mining operations, which is also not well-aligned for academic research where faculty tends to specialize in a narrow field. Consequently, under such a funding environment, it is important to keep in mind how to develop long-term academic research objectives from conducting small short-term consulting projects that require quick solutions. In other words, how to look beyond the quick answers and to develop broader and more fundamental theories applicable to other situations that advance the-state-of-the-art. In order to achieve this objective, faculty must act as the connecting link because graduate students come and go. Faculty must know the detail of each project such that they know what are the important unsolved problems, what to assign to specific graduate students and how to guide the next group of graduate students to continue the development and advance the mining science. Under such funding environments, the most effective way to conduct academic mining research and ensure quality products is to maintain a research group consisting of postdoctoral, PhD, and MS students of various rankings such that the senior ranks can assist in guiding the junior ranks, especially the senior PhD students who are experts in their dissertation research areas. A weekly meeting should be scheduled for the group in which problems encountered in the research are discussed or individuals take turns presenting the progress of their projects. During each meeting, the importance of open discussion on scientific issues must be emphasized. Thus, opinions are encouraged, debated, and rejected or accepted. Students are encouraged to listen to and analyze other points of view. In addition to training of this thought process, the meeting also helps identify the strengths and weakness of each individual. As the subject of research expands over time, the group?s and, thus, the faculty?s research experience broadens. With this approach, companies can get the quick answer they desire from expert research experience and the faculty can engage in meaningful applied and basic research that is most relevant to routine mine operations. The end result is that companies will have a high regard for academic mining research.
