New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. The former Homestake gold mine at Lead, South Dakota, has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the proposed host site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The deep laboratory and associated research campus will be developed at approximately the 7700-ft level. Plans also include the development of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at the 4850-ft level. After the mine?s pumps were shut off in June, 2003, water levels rose to approximately the 4650-ft level by early 2008. Pumps in the 8150-ft deep mine were turned on again for dewatering in April, 2008. Instrumentation is being installed in the mine to measure water-level declines during pumping, for later analysis of permeability and related hydraulic properties of the formation. Pressure-sensitive transducers and data loggers will provide real-time information on water levels that will be available to interested parties. Quality of the water also will be monitored as it is pumped from the mine. I

Mining operations take a tremendous toll on equipment, operating in difficult conditions day after day. Owners and operators cannot make the job any easier, but they can give their equipment an advantage. Equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. This means lubricants that are made to last longer and stand up better to the punishment mining equipment must endure. There are several practices to consider as part of a successful preventive maintenance program. A good place to start is to review original equipment manufacturer recommendations about servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. If these recommendations have not been followed, owners and operators must begin periodic service work on equipment to help minimize equipment down-time and extend engine life.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine is an epithermal gold deposit located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Surface operations are continuing along with an expansion for an onsite mill to take place in the next couple of years. The surface pit is currently progressing downward from an oxidized zone into a transitional, more sulfide/ telluride-rich zone. Gold mineralization includes native gold, electrum, and tellurides. Cyanide heap leaching is the recovery process for the oxidized ore with the sulfide/telluride-rich ore to be processed at the new onsite mill. Ore characterization prior to mining is vital when there are two possible recovery processes. This characterization is dependent on geometallurgy. To identify the causes of the variability, multiple parameters are analyzed and assayed. These parameters are measured by a variety of analytical testwork. The analytical testwork provides measurements for the desired parameters. Geometallurgical models are developed for the parameters per recovery process, so estimations can be inserted into the resource model to optimize operations and recoveries.

The global bentonite industry is a dynamic market balancing a range of end uses with an ever growing number of bentonite producers. In addition, markets in developed countries are elevating the level of detail and transparency for materials reporting in programs, such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restrictions of Chemicals (REACH) program in the European Union. Bentonite is impacted by programs of this nature. The majority of the bentonite products sold around the world are sodium bentonites. These sodium bentonites consist either of natural sodium bentonites, or naturally occurring bentonite dominated by divalent interlayer cations (Ca+2 andMg+2) subsequently exchanged with sodium cation. The latter variety is often called “sodium-activated“, or “soda-ash treated” bentonite. Once exchanged with sodium, these bentonites are often difficult to distinguish from natural sodium bentonites using common commercial testing protocols. Due to their similar colloidal and bulk chemical properties; the lack of test procedures designed specifically to identify this product feature; and the failure to completely or effectively explain their differences, sodium-activated bentonite is often considered to be identical to natural sodium bentonite in the industry. This article defines both general types of sodium bentonite and presents a technique that could serve the industry as a tool to confirm the variety of sodium bentonite in question. Specifically, geochemical properties such as carbon (C13/C12) and oxygen (O18/O16) isotopic ratios can distinguish activated, even slightly activated bentonites, from bentonites not introduced to additional sodium during manufacture.

Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

Mercury and silver polythiocarbonate sludge that was generated from the pilot testing of optimized mercury removal from cyanidation pregnant eluate solutions prior to Merrill-Crowe recovery of gold and silver were tested for long term stability at Newmont Metallurgical Services. Sludge samples were mixed with heap leach residue to simulate disposal of the sludge in spent or active areas of the heaps and leached for twenty weeks with water and cyanide leaching solution, respectively. Leach testing results are presented as well as analysis of the sludge using scanning electron microscope techniques down to the <1000 nanometer scale.

Several companies have adopted policies and standards aimed explicitly at increasing ‘local procurement’, recognising that local economic participation has benefits for companies and communities alike. From a corporate perspective, local economic participation is seen as one means of maintaining a social license to operate, as well as ensuring reliability of supply by having a supplier located nearby. From a community perspective, the participation of local businesses in the resource project is a means by which the benefits of resource development can flow into their communities. This paper is based on the research undertaken to produce a good practice guide for the mining, oil and gas sector. Our research revealed that the extent to which the local community will actually benefit from local procurement initiatives is dependent on the capacity of the community to supply goods and services to the project and, even more importantly, on its ability to adapt to the inevitable changes that accompany large-scale resource development. We provide guidance on adapting impact assessment tools to guide planning of procurement interventions.

Mediterranean regions such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Corsica and New Caledonia have experienced epidemics of malignant mesothelioma as a result of non-occupational, ??domestic?? exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite. This exposure to tremolite asbestos and fibrous erionite is typified ??domestic?? due to its prevalence in regions with natural deposits of tremolite asbestos (or fibrous erionite) where the material from tremolite asbestos or fibrous erionite is used for domestic applications such as whitewashing. However, these exposures may be useful in examining the potential consequences of even small amounts of amphibole asbestos fibers in the ambient air. It can also elucidate the effects of fibers that behave like amphibole asbestos. However, this type of exposure is not useful for studying the potential effects of small amounts of asbestos in the ambient air of big cities due to the differing nature of the fiber types and modes of exposure between the regions. © 2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Industry 4.0 offers new possibilities to combine increased productivity with stimulating workplaces in a good work environment. Used correctly, digitalization can create attractive jobs in safe control room environments, which provide space for the employee’s full expertise and creativity. This is true also for the mining industry. But, to succeed, it is important to analyze the development from a worker’s perspective. What will happen to their work? What skills will be needed in the mine of tomorrow? We must also consider the risks, such as privacy issues, increased stress, and work-life boundaries. These questions must be understood if we are to create workplaces that can attract a young and diverse workforce to tomorrow’s mining industry. In this article, we try to illustrate what the new technology can mean for the individual miners. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0 (Industry 4.0 in the mining industry), where we try to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies may navigate their way to a future that works for all miners. To illustrate the range of possible outcomes, we formulate two scenarios: one utopian and one dystopic. At the end of our article, we bring forward six recommendations that can be considered a beginning of a road map for the human side of Mining 4.0.

Development of the Northeast Layback of Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit commenced in June 2000 and was successfully completed to a height of 400m (1,300 ft) in January 2003. Following a brief exploration drilling campaign at the toe of the final slope, in-pit waste rock backfilling commenced, which will ultimately buttress the final wall. Instability initially occurred in late 2000, above the 5040 Level, as the slope height approached 120m (400 ft). As mining reached the 4680 Level, significant deformation was experienced over a slope height of 230m (760 ft). Slope stability was managed and targeted reserve recovery was achieved by executing complicated modifications of the mine plan, including splitting layback development, well placed offloading cuts, step-outs and mid-slope waste rock buttresses. Decision on timing of these modifying events was often dictated by review of deformation magnitudes and rates determined from continuous slope monitoring records. Design modifications were developed through continuing interpretive refinement of structural geology controls and groundwater distribution, and through stability re-assessments. This document presents an overview of the geological setting and material and strength conditions of the northeast sector of the Betze-Post open pit, followed by development experience leading to design and development of the Northeast Layback. Rock mechanics modeling, design details and geotechnical performance monitoring are then presented. Development experience, stabilizing adjustments to the original design and safety procedures for development and exploration activities are described. The document is finalized with conclusions and acknowledgements.

A number of important international events took place in 2001 in the development and evolution of mineral valuation standards internationally. In Canada, the CIMVal Committee released a draft discussion paper for public and industry comment on principles to guide the development of the planned Canadian mineral property valuation standard. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) received comments on its Extractive Industries Issues Paper. IASB will decide whether the financial statements of public mining and petroleum companies will be allowed to provide the value of mineral and petroleum assets on a current value basis instead of an historic cost basis. The author led the Extractive Industries Task Force of the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC) in developing its submission to IASB. IVSC intends to develop an extractive industries valuation section for its International Valuation Standards, which could support the planned IASB standard. In Australia, AusIMM has carried out an in-depth review of its highly regarded VALMIN Code. The AusIMM&apos;s MICA subdivision organized the VALMIN ‘01 Conference in Sydney, Australia, with a range of international and current issues papers published in the VALMIN ‘01 book. Considerable support for the IVSC initiative was evident at this conference. The results of the review of the extractive industries submissions to the IASB are expected to be released in early 2002. The CMMI Congress in Cairns, Australia in May 2002 is likely to prove to be an important forum for continued discussion of the development and implementation of international standards and qualifications for mineral valuation. The outcomes and implications of these events are discussed.

Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle&apos;s Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country&apos;s fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world&apos;s zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.
