For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated database was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ?actual? grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ?actuals?/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. two three and compound lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

The paper describes the construction of 5 plugs to resist high water heads at depth within the South Deep Gold Mine, Randfontein, South Africa. A total of 20 segments were involved to create these plugs, which were 7.5 m long at the 58 Level and 6.25 m long at the50 Level. Emphasis is placed on the QA/QC and verification methods, which were developed and governed all phases of the work, from initial rock preparation and pregrouting through to the final grout tightening of the rock/plug interface and the surrounding rock. This paper is one in a series of papers detailing other aspects of the project, which was constructed largely between May 2001 and August 2003.

Low carbon 11.5% chromium stainless steels are finding increasing use in industry as square or rectangular tubing material for the construction of structures by welding. During processing, resistively welded circular pipes are bent into square or rectangular shapes. During this process longitudinal cracks can sometimes develop atone of the inner corners of the section. An investigation has shown that the processing of round into square tubing with very sharp corners can cause excessive cold working at the inner corners of the squared tube. This, together with the high tensile residual stresses and a susceptible microstructure due to the presence of grain boundary carbides, can result in brittle cleavage cracking. Measures that can be used to reduce the problem are described.

Novel flotation reagents were developed to improve the flotation of coarse particles. Laboratory tests conducted on an anthracite coal sample from Kyung-Dong Coal Company, Korea, showed that the reagents can successfully clean 2?3 mm top-size materials. Pilot-scale tests conducted on a 1.41 mm x0 coal gave substantially better results than those obtained using kerosene as collector. The pilot-scale test results were used to develop a flowsheet, in which the 1.41 mm x0 fraction is cleaned by flotation and the 4 x1.41 mm coal is cleaned by single-stage spirals. The performance of this circuit was compared with another flowsheet, in which the 0.5 mm x0coal is floated using the conventional flotation reagent, with the 4 x0.5 mm material being cleaned using two separate spiral circuits. The performance of the two flowsheets was compared by computer simulation. The results showed that the flowsheet consisting of the coarse particle flotation circuit can give substantially higher yield sat a given product grade. The SINTEF SiO-reactivity test, developed by Tuset and Raaness in the 1970?s, is a recognised method of characterising the ?reactivity? of carbonaceous reactants, used in the ferrosilicon and silicon metal industries. Recently, the test has been updated, which has resulted in the development of an extended and improved SINTEF SiO reactivity test. This has included updating the test reactor, control system, data-logging, handling and preparation of carbonaceous materials to be tested and measurement procedure. The scientific basis has been re-assessed, resulting in a new interpretation of the test results. The repeatability of the test has improved significantly, especially through system automation. In the ?old? test, the kinetics of the reaction: SiO(g) + 2C(s) = SiC(s) + CO(g) for a specific carbonaceous material was characterised solely by the ?R10? parameter, the volume of SiO(g) which passes un-reacted through the coke-bed as the concentration of CO in the outlet gas decreases from 18 to 10%. As both the kinetics and obtainable conversion of SiO to SiC for a reductant is of importance to the ferroalloy producer, the new SINTEF SiO reactivity test ranks carbon materials both according to degree of conversion and reaction rate. From research carried out on the test in the past couple of years at SINTEF and NTNU, it has also become clear that some of the reactions taking place in the test reactor are more complex than previously assumed. As an example, it was previously assumed that the condensation reaction of SiO gas in the condensation chamber of the test reactor can be described as: 2 SiO(g) = Si(l,s) + SiO2(s). However, it has been established that the side-reaction: CO(g) + 2Si(l) = SiC(s) + SiO(g) causes approximately 10% of the total volume of CO to react to SiC and SiO2 in the condensation chamber. This means that some back-reaction i.e., the reverse SiO-generator reaction 3SiO(g) + CO(g) = 2SiO2 + SiC also takes place in the condensation chamber. In the new SINTEF test, the %CO versus time curves are therefore corrected in order to describe the effect of the reaction between SiO(g) and C(s) studied i.e., SiO(g) + 2C(s) = SiC(s) + CO(g). A correction-formula for this purpose is presented.

Composite rock mass failures involve intact rock material as well as fracture and shear on existing defects. Experiences from open-cut coalmining in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland are that failures of this nature occur suddenly with little warning, and are much more common than classical structurally controlled failures. Geological conditions and mining practices in the Bowen Basin are described. The circumstances of a sample of composite failures are described in detail in the paper. From this experience it appears that several aspects of conventional geotechnical investigation and design practice have not contributed significantly to either predicting or controlling the risks associated with sudden failures. These practices are described as myths for reasons outlined in the paper. On the other hand, the reality seems to be that high initial stresses and stress changes caused by excavation lead by a process of extensional deformation to a critical stress condition within the rock mass, and that sudden collapse follows when that critical stress condition can no longer be sustained. It is concluded that learnings gained from underground excavations in rock may be more applicable to open pit excavations than previously thought, and that the processes of prefailure deformation require more careful study if we are to develop more reliable risk management controls.

"Two shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index are compared for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. The first procedure is based on a batch milling test while the second procedure is based on a limited locked-cycle test. Both procedures were conducted using a standard Bond test mill. INTRODUCTION The Bond ball work index is widely used in the field of minerals processing as an indicator of ore grindability. The work index is determined by means of a locked-cycle test procedure that typically requires seven to eight cycles to stabilise at a re-circulating load of 250%. A typical test requires between three to four kilogram of ore sample and around eight hours of operator time. For geometallurgical test work applications, where a large number of variability samples are to be tested, it would be highly beneficial to use a test procedure that requires less sample mass and operator time. Certain test work laboratories, for example SGS and JK Tech, are already offering various types of shortened test procedures for estimating the Bond ball work index. This paper discusses a comparison of two shortened test procedures that were evaluated for suitability of use on Zambian/DRC-type copper–cobalt ores. EXPERIMENTAL Test Procedure 1 – Batch Milling The first test procedure is derived from a batch milling approach proposed by the University of Hacettepe (Aksani, 2000). Some modifications were, however, made to the data analysis method from that originally proposed. During this test procedure, a 700 mL volume of sample is milled in a standard Bond test mill for a pre-determined number of revolutions. The feed and product particle size distributions are measured for each test. These results are then used to back-calculate a cumulative breakage rate parameter (k) for each particle size, according to the following formula:"

The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. The South African coal mining industry is currently disposing of about 10 million tons of ultra-fine coal (<150 µm) per year. Once discarded, these sulphur-containing ultra-fines contribute to several environmental problems. As part of a project initiated by the Water Research Commission to investigate the use of Cleaner Production (CP) in the mining industry, a study was carried out to determine whether a CP approach could be used to identify opportunities to reduce this coal waste, and to determine which of these opportunities would be most feasible. In order to do this, a CP assessment was conducted at three case study collieries in the South African Witbank coalfield. Mass-balancing and sampling, followed by laboratory characterisation tests and site surveys, were used to determine the quantity, quality and sources of the ultra-fine coal at the three collieries. Literature reviews, brainstorming sessions and interviews then followed to generate the CP options. An environ-mental, economic and technical feasibility assessment was then prepared for each option, to determine the most viable interventions for implementation. A number of opportunities were identified through the assessment. By preventing coarser coal from being discarded with the ultra-fine coal, the quantity of coal disposed of could be decreased at all three collieries, and by up to 24% in one case. Increasing the crusher top size would reduce the amount of coal that is milled to less than 150 µm, so that less is wasted. The ultra-fines that have already been disposed of on slurry dams can be completely reclaimed and converted into a valuable product, which can be sold as power station feedstock. The newly processed ultra-fines could be beneficiated using flotation and exported together with the coarser coal. The results of the assessments thus suggested that workable CP opportunities to reduce ultra-fine coal wastage exist at the sites investigated, and that their feasibility is colliery-specific. The associated financial benefits of the proposed options suggested that CP is a realistic approach to addressing environmental problems. "For effective steel refining in the ladle (secondary steelmaking) the amount of steelmaking slag that is transferred from primary steelmaking must be limited, because the steelmaking slag contains iron oxide, manganese oxide, and phosphorus oxide. Adverse effects of slag carry-over include increased consumption of deoxidizers, phosphorus pick-up by the steel, and increased ladle refractory wear. Infrared imaging at longer wavelengths is an effective non-contact method to detect slag in the tapping stream. Various devices are used to shut off the tapping stream rapidly. These include slag darts, pneumatic slag stoppers, and slide gates for steelmaking converters, and eccentric bottom tapping for electric arc furnaces. IntroductionOxygen converters and electric arc furnaces are used for primary steelmaking. For both process types, the product (liquid crude steel) has a similar composition: largely liquid iron, with around 800–1000 parts per million (ppm, by mass) dissolved oxygen and low but significant concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The steel is tapped into a ladle, which serves as the refining vessel to adjust the final steel composition and temperature before casting.Some steelmaking slag is inevitably tapped with the liquid steel. The mass of steelmaking slag tapped with the steel is termed ‘slag carry-over’. Controlling and limiting slag carry-over from steelmaking is a primary requirement for clean steel production (Fandrich, Lüngen, and Wuppermann, 2008). Steel cleanliness refers to limiting the concentrations of dissolved impurities (such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulphur) and of nonmetallic inclusions (oxides, sulphides, and nitrides) in liquid steel and in the final solid steel product. Of these, the strongest effect of slag carry-over is on the content of dissolved phosphorus in the liquid steel"

Consideration of the economic, environmental, and social impacts associated with the life-cycle of a technology is of increasing importance for decision-making in industry. It has been suggested that economic assessment of technology deployment projects requires the translation of associated environmental effects into monetary values. This paper introduces an approach for identifying and evaluating environmental damage in monetary terms. The approach groups the environmental impacts associated with a technology life-cycle system into four main criteria: air, water, land, and mined abiotic resources. The valuation of the impacts on the resources consists of an economic cost benefit analysis (CBA) procedure that comprises four steps: the compiling of an impact inventory, a monetary valuation of the inventory, discounting, and a risk/uncertainty analysis. The monetary valuation step for impacts on air resources is primarily based on published externality costs for Europe and the United States, which are adopted and converted to reflect the South African context. Local opportunity costs are utilized for the other resource criteria. The damage costs are transformed into South African Rand at 2005 prices. The paper demonstrates how the approach may be applied in the assessment of projects in the metallurgical industry. Shortcomings in the approach are identified. For example, not all of the aspects that are considered necessary to assess environmental performances comprehensively can be valued in monetary terms. Also, certain values, specifically those pertaining to opportunity costs, need to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Furthermore, the uncertainties associated with the indicators obtained may strongly influence the usability of the results of an environmental performance assessment, e.g. future damage costs will change with fluctuations in the markets. It is concluded that although such an approach has merit in increasing the understanding of the potential financial implications of a technology?s environmental performance, further research is required to improve the approach described if it is to be used further in the South African metallurgical industry. Damage cost estimates that are specific to South Africa need to be developed to reduce uncertainty, and the combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches is recommended for comprehensive sustain-ability decision-making.

This paper describes the joint testing and engineering programme that culminated in this successful process.

Scaling of rockpasses was problematic at Tau Lekoa Mine prior to production commencing in 1991. High horizontal stress levels relative to the host rock mass strength have been instrumental in causing the observed scaling. Scaling has been more pronounced in the deeper rockpasses and these are monitored regularly. Rehabilitation of one of the reef passes and one of the waste passes was required in the period 1999 to 2001. This paper describes the extent of the problems experienced to date as well as the rehabilitation completed.

The seismicity of the Witwatersrand Basin and Bushveld Complex has been analysed, revealing significant differences in source and damage mechanisms. A comparison of mining taking place at similar depths and extraction ratios indicates that the seismic energy release rate is considerably lower in the Bushveld Complex. Technologies introduced in the past decade to manage the risk of rockbursting are reviewed and assessed. These include geophysical methods to detect hazardous structures ahead of mining, new mining layouts and support systems, and the mechanization of in-stope processes. Despite important differences in geology, in situ stress, mining layouts and methods, there are many opportunities for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between the gold and platinum mining sectors to improve the management of the rockburst risk.

Mintek has developed the EnviroplasTM process for the treatment of solid wastes from the metallurgical industry, especially steel plant dusts, without requiring agglomeration to produce inert slag and at the same time recover metal values such as nickel, chromium and zinc. The products that are generated in the plasma-arc process are usually a metal and a non-toxic slag, which are tapped from the furnace in liquid form. The metal is mainly composed of chromium, nickel and manganese. During the production of stainless steel between 30 and 70 kg of dust and fine waste is generated per ton of steel. Mintek has successfully processed around 1000t of AOD/EAF dust on a toll treatment basis in order to recover the contained Cr and Ni. The metal produced contained 18.5 per cent Cr, and 5.5 per cent Ni. All slag samples tested conformed to US EPA regulations for disposal. The chromium and nickel recovery to metal was 90 and 98 per cent respectively, on a once through basis i.e. no baghouse dust recycle. Slag tapping temperatures varied between 1650°C and 1750°C. The average actual energy requirement excluding furnace heatlosses of smelting steel plant dust with anthracite as reductant was 1.36MWh/ ton of dust. The total mass of feed reporting to the off-gas stream was 10 per cent. The average ZnO content of the fume was 35.5 per cent.

Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented. A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. "The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

Historically, linear and lognormal krigings were first created to estimate the in situ mineral resources of blocks. Nonlinear geostatistics and indicator kriging were subsequently developed to evaluate also the portion recovered when applying a cut-off on selective mining units (SMUs) within blocks. In practice these methods are generally based either on the Gaussian model with a transformation generalizing the lognormal case or on the indicators above cut-offs. Very often the indicator approach is simplified by kriging separately each indicator, and when starting from a continuous variable, a practical advantage of the discretization into classes lies in the easy treatment of a zero effect and of the high values. However, a number of so-called isofactorial models have also been developed for a discrete or continuous variable, where the full cokriging of indicators (i.e. disjunctive kriging) simplifies to the separate kriging of factors. Moreover, these models are equipped with a change of support, allowing a consistent estimation of recoverable resources on SMUs. Min-Max Autocorrelation Factors (MAF) analysis of the indicators offers a new approach for indicator modelling. In particular the first factor, the one with the highest spatial continuity, can help in choosing the type of model. For example a monotonic experimental first factor can be used directly as the basis of a discrete diffusion model, unless a continuous diffusion model such as the Gaussian model can be used on the original variable. This approach is illustrated on a uranium deposit mined selectively: estimates of recoverable resources by discrete disjunctive kriging and uniform conditioning in a Gaussian model are compared locally to short-term estimates based on two areas densely drilled.

The authors are lead authors for chapter 4.3 ?Emissions from Ferroalloy Production? in ?2006 IPCC Guide-lines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Volume 3?. The paper discusses the methods to calculate and report emissions from the production of ferrosilicon, silicon-metal, ferromanganese, silicomanganese and ferrochromium alloys, as well as the basis for the methods and choice of emission factors. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas emission from ferroalloy production, accounting for about 95 % of the total CO2-equivalents. The most accurate method of determining emissions is to base the calculations on reported amounts and analyses of reducing agents and carbonate ores used in the process. If analyses are not available, typical CO2 emission factors for the different reducing agents are recommended. If neither reliable amounts nor analyses of all reducing agents are known, default generic CO2 emission factors for the type of ferroalloy multiplied with amount produced, can be used. The CO2 produced from bio-carbon (charcoal and wood chips) should be reported but will not be accounted for in national emissions. If any bio-carbon is used, the default generic CO2 emission factors cannot be applied. CH4 accounts for less than 1 % of the total emission of CO2-equivalents. Default emissions factors for CH4 are given for the production in open or semi-closed furnaces of silicon-metal and ferrosilicon. In the production of FeMn, SiMn and FeCr in closed furnaces the gas containing CO,CO2 and volatiles can be combusted in boilers and N2O may be formed. While reporting is not required, IPCC Guidelines recommend that the N2O-content in the off-gas is measured.

The Modified Zincex® Process, developed by Técnicas Reunidas, is highly flexible dealing with a wide range of pregnant leach solutions. No matter if those solutions are produced from primary or secondary raw materials, and/or are based on conventional leaching, pressure leaching, heap leaching or bio leaching the result is always high-purity zinc product. The zinc solvent extraction unit within the process is a very effective barrier for impurities and a buffer for the composition of the pregnant liquor. This unit achieves an extremely pure aqueous extract that can be converted into different final products. All of them are characterized by fulfilling the highest purity standards. Also, there is the possibility to adapt the global process to a wide range of pregnant liquor compositions and various production capacities up to a zinc production limit over 150 000 t/a with a single solvent extraction plant.
