Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. South Africa?s Northern Cape Province houses a variety of gemstone minerals. Diamonds remain the primary gemstone in the province, but there are also tiger?s eye, sugilite, rose quartz, jasper, amethyst, amazonite, tourmaline, and topaz deposits. This paper gives an overview of the tiger?s eye (TE) mining sector in the Northern Cape, with the objective of assessing the potential of TE to contribute to job creation and poverty alleviation in the province. Mining of TE started in 1803, but gained momentum during the 1960s. Mining is conducted on a small-scale basis, and in most cases without any legal framework. The majority of the residents are not benefiting from TE. It has been reported that an estimated R700 000 to R800 000 worth of TE is leaving the country every week through illegal trading. The potential for TE mining to contribute to socioeconomic development is hindered by illegal operations, lack of technical skills and knowledge, exploitation by dealers, lack of market information, community rivalries, and absence of value addition. A multi-stakeholder approach is needed to formalize the sector and reap the benefits. Mintek is spearheading a TE project in the Prieska area of the Northern Cape, which aims to establish a gemmological centre where TE can be beneficiated into saleable and high-value products..

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, ferrochromium, alloys, Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Alloys was founded in 1949 by a consortium led by the John Brown Group. It was the first ferrochrome plant in Africa. The establishment of the refinery was necessitated by an increase in world stainless steel demand and the need to reduce cost by shipping alloy rather than chrome ore. The location of the refinery in Gweru was influenced by a number of factors, not least of which were the abundance of chrome ore deposits, access to inexpensive power from Kariba, the availability of reductant coke from Hwange, accessibility to ports (as the town was well served with rail and road networks second to none in the country), and of course cheaper labour costs. The production of Low Carbon Ferrochrome (LCFeCr) was commissioned in 1953 and produced from an Open Arc Furnace with a Submerged Arc Furnace producing Ferrosilicon Chrome (FeSiCr) that is used as a reductant in the production of LCFeCr. An experimental furnace was commissioned in 1958 to help with efficiency and control on larger furnaces. A second Submerged Furnace was commissioned in 1963. Three other Submerged Arc Furnaces were built between 1967 and 1974. Several mines were acquired between 1974 and 1984, as a strategic move to ensure the growth of the refinery. A briquetting plant was commissioned in 1977, enabling the use of friable ores to enhance the capacity of ore supplies and ore cost management. A plant to recover alloy from slag was established in 1994 to capitalize on market demand without large capital outlay that would be required to build other furnaces to increase capacity. Zimbabwe Alloys has created employment opportunities throughout the years. There have been direct employment opportunities at both the refinery and the mining divisions. With time, indirect employment was realised both upstream and downstream of the refining process, enhancing the livelihood of numerous people. Zimbabwe Alloys' involvement with various labour skills has, of necessity, enabled it to develop a culture of safety at work, home, and play. Zimbabwe Alloys has contributed to society by participating and funding various local initiatives primarily to impact positively on societal needs. The latest development was in 1996, when Zimbabwe Alloys entered into a Technical Transfer Agreement with Japan Metals and Chemicals to improve the efficiencies and hence the profitability of the LCFeCr production process. A significant quantity of various alloys has been produced since inception, and significant foreign currency has been earned for the country. This was in spite of challenges that included the cyclic nature of market prices, the upheavals of sanctions affecting the macro-economic environment, and the challenges related to the deteriorating grade of chrome ore and reductant coke.

With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

This paper reviews the main research themes over the quarter-century from 1980 to 2005, as well as some of the industrial developments that have shaped the research approach. The main topics have been the use of electrochemical sensors for equilibrium measurements, ilmenite smelting, steel processing, and reduction.

In 1998 an initial objective was given to the author, to process valuable off grade High Carbon Ferro Manganese (FeMn) metal fines profitably. The previous attempts that had been made to re-melt these metal fines through the furnaces had resulted in poor furnace operation, mainly to do with lack of electrode penetration and furnace bed permeability. It was decided that the method to resolve these problems was to agglomerate the metal fines. During the study on the agglomeration of the metal fines, a decision was made to use furnace baghouse dust and stockpiled furnace baghouse dust and sludge (DSF) as a ?filler? in the metal fines. The primary reason for using baghouse dust was to eliminate an environmental hazard, whereas the secondary reason for using the DSF was to utilize manganese units contained in the dust. The off-grade metal fines and dust were compacted using a brick press, with cement and aluminum rich plastic clay as a binder, to obtain agglomerate that was cost effective. Through the re-melting of the agglomerated off-grade metal fines, it was realized that this agglomerate concept could have other uses, that of replacing ores on the furnace, at a lower cost. The agglomerate recipe was changed to create an agglomerate that had a high manganese to iron ratio, this replaced Comilog ore on the furnaces, thereby reducing overall furnace unit costs. Future work concerning agglomeration, is to reduce furnace costs further through agglomerating .0.5mm ultra ore fines and .0.3mm Gloria and Nchwaning sludge. Using this agglomerate replaces a portion of the Gloria and Nchwaning lumpy ore on the furnaces at a lower cost. This would eliminate problematic material that exists at the ASSMANG Manganese mines.

Heavy mineral sands are usually beneficiated in a spiral concentrator circuit prior to separation of heavy minerals into streams of zircon, rutile and ilmenite. The performance of the spiral concentrators is heavily affected by the presence of slimes in the rougher feed. The paper quantifies the effect of slimes content and discusses the beneficial effect of spiral feed de-sliming. The net effect of inefficient slimes removal can cause significant recovery losses of the heavy minerals present in the feed.

Quartz is one of the main raw materials for the carbothermic production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal. The ideal process is written: SiO2 + 2C = Si + 2CO The real process is much more complicated, depending on the quality of the raw materials. Several research projects have been carried out on quartz for the (Fe)Si process during the last 50-60 years. One of the important properties that have been discussed in this review is the volume expansion that takes place between 850 °C to 1000 ºC and explosive disintegration for some quartz types. No final and definite conclusions have been made but several reasons have been mentioned: The influence of the phase transformation to tridymite, which takes place within the same temperature interval, has been discussed in several papers. Alkali impurities have been mentioned as a critical factor for this transformation to take place. Other researchers have mentioned mica impurities as a critical factor for the behavior of the quartz at these temperatures. Studies of fluid inclusions in quartz was reported in some papers focusing on the volume expansion of these during heating as a source of explosive disintegration, especially along planes of healed micro fractures that often contain vast numbers of such inclusions. Several methods for investigations of the important properties of quartz have been presented and these provide a good basis for the further research on quartz raw materials.

The process of atomisation is introduced and related to granulation. Some processes applicable to ferroalloys are discussed, along with their limitations and advantages. Examples of applications of atomisation to the processing of ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon and ferromanganese for use in the welding industry and as injectable additions to steel or cast iron are also presented. The economics of the process and the impact of process scale are discussed, along with criteria for process selection and system design.

One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. Ferro-alloys are sold according to the size grading specifications of users. Fines are produced during crushing and the amount produced depends on the crushing process and the physical characteristics of the ferro-alloy. The market value of fines has declined. Market demand is very weak and in some extreme cases is nonexistent. An induction furnace melt process has been developed to solve this problem. The process feasibility has been demonstrated on a small scale with charges of approximately 2.5 kg. The piloting was carried out using a 100 kW furnace with a metal liquid capacity of 140 kg. The operating parameters were determined during the pilot process. The procedures were defined and the equipment required for melting fines produced at the client's site was sized. With the production of ingots, the client can now recover the full value of ferro-alloy fines.

To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. The effect of the amount of cold reduction and annealing temperature on the evolution of the texture of AISI 441 steel is reported. The steel was cold rolled by 62%, 78%, and 82%, followed by isothermal annealing of each sample at 900°C, 950°C, and 1025°C for 3 minutes. The crystallographic texture was determined by Phillips X?Pert PROMPD texture diffractrometer. Microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The results show that sample that received 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C presented the highest Rm-value and lowest ?R-value, which would enhance its deep-drawing capability. In addition, this sample showed the highest intensity of shifted ?-fibre, notably {554}<225> and {334}<483>. It can therefore be concluded that the ?-fibre, which favours deep drawing, is optimal after 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C.

In this research, a model quarry with an annual production capacity of 1 000 000 tonnes has been studied for both pit and hillside quarry cases with constant overall slope angle and variable bench slope angle, considering road grades of 8 per cent and 10 per cent. First, technical requirements have been determined and then the effect of production parameters, such as hole diameter, type of quarrying (pit or hillside) and road grade, on the cost has been investigated to determine bench height. Based on the results, it has been concluded that hole diameter has to be kept large in both pit and hillside quarrying to reduce drilling unit costs. In addition, in order to take advantage of gravity and reduce transportation cost, it has been suggested that bench height and road grade have to be kept high and low respectively in the case of hillside quarrying (downhill transportation) while, in the case of pit quarrying (uphill transportation), bench height and road grade have to be kept low and high respectively, in order to transport the blasted material to a lower height and distance, to save energy, thus decreasing the transport cost. Dense-medium beneficiation of fine (minus 0.5 mm) coal is not a new concept and has been used in South Africa previously. The dense-medium fine coal plant at Greenside Colliery operated for almost 18 years and, despite proving a difficult plant to operate, did succeed in producing a fine coal product with a low ash content of 7%. No other beneficiation process available could achieve this. Dense-medium beneficiation of fine coal was also used in other countries, of which the plants at Homer City in the USA and Curragh in Australia were the best known. The first application of dense-medium cleaning of fine coal was, however, at the Tertre plant in Belgium1. This plant was built in 1957. About nine years later, a second fine coal dense-medium plant was built at the Winterslag Mine, also in Belgium. According to reports, this plant operated satisfactorily for a period of some 17 years.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The condition of tunnels at Premier has deteriorated to such an extent that an objective viewpoint on what leads to poor condition was required. Poor and untimely development results in schedule deviation, rehabilitation, and increased working costs. The project focused primarily on quality, and not on efficiency. The project gave management guidelines that need to be focused on in order to produce quality infrastructure. The conclusions were reached by doing literature searches, underground site investigations, benchmarking and computer simulations. From the results we can see that, in order to produce good quality tunnels, we have to have the basics working. This was found to be one of the major problems. Firstly, tunnel profiles are not to the design specification and no fixed blast designs existed. After revising tunnel profile statistics, over break increased to 10% (previously 7%) and development metres were 50 m short of target. Blasting was not monitored and designs not optimized for the conditions. Furthermore, geological factors are the main contributor to tunnel failure, although this process is initiated and aided by poor development (overbroken tunnels, incorrect profiles, direction and location) and blast damage. Continuing to develop tunnels in the current manner will cost R 1.5 million in additional costs for loading and supporting overbreak, whilst an additional 1 800 man-shifts will be required. Blast patterns were designed as a starting point for trials, while the implementation of a blast management system, development statistical database, tunnel hand-over procedures and a revision of the bonus system were proposed.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills A[O] or B[O] holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.
