In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the 'AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation' project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error'.

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. Stirred milling using either horizontal or vertical mills has made a rapid entrance into PGM ore and tailings concentrator flow sheets. Currently there are in excess of 40 units installed in either mainstream, ?MIG? or intermediate concentrate regrind, ?UFG?, applications in PGM, primary ore treatment plants or in tailings scavenging and reclamation treatment plants. This represents a total of approximately 70 MW of installed fine grinding equipment. This paper outlines the reasons why the technology take-up has been rapid and illustrates the advantages of this technology over conventional milling. Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

Abstract For the feasibility study of an underground waste disposal the characterization of the coupled behaviour of the host rock is required: Because of the very low permeability of these formations few experimental data are generally available. In this framework the uses of the sensitivity studies could orient the experimental efforts by highlighting the key parameters of the formation. This paper gives a first approach of the sensitivity studies performed with probabilistic methods in the geomechanical field. A one dimensional model which characterizes the thermohydromechanical response of an argillaceous rock to the excavation of a waste canister site and its setting up, is considered. Zusammenfassun Die Machbarkeitsstudie eines tiefliegenden Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle beinhaltet die Untersuchung des gekoppelten Verhaltens des im Lagerbereich anstehenden Gesteins. Aufgrund der sehr geringen Wasserdurchlässigkeit dieser Formationen liegen häufig nur wenige experimentelle Angaben vor. Die Verwendung von Sensibilitätsstudien kann in diesem Zusammenhang als Hilfsmittel zur Entscheidungsfindung dienen. Dabei sollen die maßgeblichen Eigenschaften der Formation festgestellt werden, anhand derer der Umfang der experimentellen Erkundung festgelegt werden kann. Dieser Artikel stellt einen ersten Ansatz zur Durchführung von Sensibilitätsstudien mittels einer mechanisch-probablistischen Kopplung im Bereich der Geomechanik sowie die Vorteile gegenüber Parameterstudien vor. Zur Abbildung des thermohydromechanischen Stoffverhaltens von tonigem Fels während der Schachterstellung und der Einlagerung der Abfälle wird ein eindimensionales Model verwendet. Résumé L'étude de faisabilité d'un centre de stockage de déchets radioactifs en profondeur passe par la caractérisation du comportement couplé de la roche hôte. Du fait de la très faible perméabilité de ces formations, souvent peu de données expérimentales sont disponibles. Dans ce cadre l'utilisation d'études de sensibilité permettrait d'orienter les efforts expérimentaux en faisant ressortir les caractéristiques primordiales de la formation. Cet article présente une première approche de la réalisation d'études de sensibilités à l'aide de couplages mécano-fiabilistes dans le domaine de la géomécanique. Un model unidimensionnel caractérisant la réponse thermohydromécanique d'une roche argileuse au creusement d'un puit de stockage et à la mise en place de conteneurs de déchets est considéré.

In order to optimize carbon injection into oxidizing slags, in terms of carbon and iron yield, we must have a detailed understanding of the kinetics of the reactions involved. The current study measures the rate of carbon oxidation during injection at steelmaking temperature by means of injections of coal into EAF slags. The compositions of analysed outgoing gas were used to calculate gas flow rate and hence the gasification rate of carbon. A fundamental equation to predict residual carbon in slags was developed. The predictions using this model at moderate injection rates are in good agreement with experimental data. The reaction rate of EAF slag with carbon is under mixed control by the slag gas and the gas carbon reactions. The relative importance of each step depends mainly on the v-ratio of slags. A relative reactivity parameter ? has been defined and it is found to be important to carbon-slag reaction kinetics and slag foaming. Key words: carbon-slag reaction, kinetics, slag foaming.

Mineral Resource Throughput Management is based on the extraction of the maximum potential value from an ore reserve with the emphasis to generate maximum ROI and ROR (return on reserve). A steel producing company in India implemented MRTM to significantly improve their ROI and ROR. The value chain of this company consists of their own iron ore and coal mines, ore washing plants, sinter plants, steel plants, and sales and marketing division. The target for the mines was to produce at a stable and predictable rate and at specific quality requirements. These requirements were set to improve productivity and ROI of the steel plant. The implementation constituted the alignment of the reserve potential, total production chain, human resources and management culture at the mines with the requirements of the steel plant. Many typical mining practices were challenged and changed. Production targets regarding lump vs. fines ratio, consistent product tons, quality targets such as Fe, Al content and moist, and standard deviation on the quality targets were not achieved. A reverse distribution model with release mechanisms to satisfy the demand were developed and implemented at the mines. A stable and predictable flow of mine product with quality standards well within the required standard deviation targets were achieved. The contribution from the mines to significantly improve the Net Profit, ROI and ROR of the company were reached.

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective. The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. "SynopsisThe purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach to risk management in surface mining operations, namely, positive risk. Traditionally, risk management focused on mitigating losses (negative). Positive risk, on the contrary, reverses the approach and focuses on exploiting a project’s inherent benefits (positive).The inability to accurately determine project objectives during the project planning phase and the failure to achieve those objectives during the execution phase is a major problem for any project management in the mining environment.The advance of computer aided design models for mine planning enables mining engineers to examine various options within a very short time. Employing positive risk management combined with drivers-based risk management when evaluating these options provides an ideal opportunity to investigate areas for improving the mining project’s profits. Furthermore, harnessing positive risk returns during the planning phase contributes immensely to the successful achievement of project objectives.Mining has inherent business risks, which can appear overwhelming when considering the risks associated with a mining project schedule, cost, and safety or resources, etc. The question is – how to manage risks in a surface mining environment, and what process methodologies, work methods, processes, and standards should be used when considering the surface mining risks. Applying the principles of positive risk management to manage surface mining risks is not only relevant, but definitely beneficial to mining projects and to the mining industry as a whole.It would be beneficial for risk managers and risk professionals to understand the roles of positive risk ‘drivers’, also known as ‘propitious attractors’. Identifying, analysing, estimating, and understanding the propitious attractors, their behaviour and their influence on project risk events helps considerably during the planning and execution phases. The theoretical and practical knowledge of both sides of the risk – the downside risk (negative risk) and upside risk (positive risk) – can add substantial value to any organization when downside risk is adequately mitigated and upside risk is beneficially exploited."

1.1 Section 47(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29 of 1996 (?the MHSA?) establishes a Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Mines. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate is part of the Department of Mineral Resources. The Chief Inspector is appointed by the Minister of Mineral Resources (see section 48(1) of the MHSA). 1.2 The Chief Inspector must, amongst other things, ensure that the provisions of the MHSA are complied with and enforced, and that all the duties imposed upon the Chief Inspector and the other Inspectors of Mines in terms of the MHSA and any other law are performed. The Chief Inspector of Mines must appoint Principal Inspectors of Mines and Inspectors of Mines to assist him/her to discharge his/her duties (see section 49(1)(a) and (c) of the MHSA).

The legislation for the disposal of heavy metals contaminated substances is still going to be tightened up in the future. The main criteria for the utilization or deposition of these residues are the content and the water solubility of these metals. Through this, the use of slags from the lead-and zinc-industry in road building may become limited or even not possible at all. From an economic point of view this would lead to Pb/Zn losses and costs for safe dumping. This paper investigates the feeding of the reducing agent via hollow electrode DC smelting and the yield of metal reduction. After carrying out thermodynamic calculations, the process window conditions for electric-arc furnace tests were determined. Doing this, the zinc could be reduced, evaporated and recovered as an oxidic intermediate product flue dust, while the lead was present either in flue dust or in metallic form. The zinc content in the final slag could be reduced by up to 90%. The slag product has undergone an eluation test which allows it to be used as building materials. In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. The storage capacity of any given tailings storage facility (TSF) is a function of the volume available for the tailings, for which the geometry of the final upper surface of the tailings is most important. One of the advantages that can be obtained from thickening tailings prior to discharge is that the tailings can be stacked at a steeper beach angle than is obtainable with conventional low-density slurries. However, there is at present no universally accepted method available for the accurate prediction of tailings beach slopes. This paper examines the current situation with the objective of putting the quest for a method for the accurate prediction of beach slopes into perspective. The paper references published reviews of the best-known beach slope prediction methods. However, there do not appear to be any independently verified projects or published references to projects on which a Class A prediction has been validated for any of these approaches, and in those instances where projects have been implemented correlation of actual with predicted slopes has been poor - often due to differences between the properties of the tailings assumed in the design and those actually achieved in the field. The author also concludes that flume-scale testing cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of full-scale performance, and suggests that the outcome of any current predictive method should be used by experienced practitioners as only one of a range of indicators in order to suggest a range of slope angles likely to result for any given operation. Practice has shown that it is possible to manipulate beach slopes by changes to the disposal technique, such as limiting the rate of discharge per discharge point and by increasing or decreasing yield stress, but the impact of these changes cannot readily be predicted. There are also newly emerging technologies, such as the injection of a polymer into the tailings at discharge, that will enhance the dewatering of tailings and hence expedite the consolidation of the tailings, that could well facilitate the development of steeper beach slopes. The overall conclusion is that with the current state of knowledge, the accurate prediction of beach slopes is not possible. Furthermore, in view of the inherent variability of the tailings parameters from any operation, it may well be of more value to concentrate on developing an understanding of the means by which the tailings parameters may be manipulated by the operators to achieve a given beach slope than to concentrate wholly on developing a generic beach slope prediction model.

Better utilisation of electric power and coke is vital in reducing production costs and CO2-emissions in production of ferromanganese. All FeMn smelting operations consume 10 to 30 % more carbon than the carbon needed to reduce MnO and FeO to metal and the carbon contained in the alloy. Potassium which re-circulates and builds up in the furnace has been shown to be the main culprit causing both excessive carbon consumption, by catalysing the Boudouard reaction, and increased electric power consumption. The reaction between CO2 and ordinary metallurgical coke or coke impregnated with potassium has been studied at temperatures from 800 to 1100°C in a thermobalance apparatus. Ordinary coke did not react to any great extent at temperatures up to 1000°C, whereas the addition of potassium (2-10 %) resulted in a huge increase in reaction rates. The ultimate goal is to fit the results into a reaction rate model containing the equilibrium constant for the solid-gas heterogeneous reaction between CO2 and a free active site on the carbon reactant producing CO and adsorbed oxygen (an occupied site). The model includes the partial pressures of CO and CO2, a reaction rate constant that is a function of both the total number of reaction sites of carbon, and the potassium content. The potassium dependency is taken care of by introducing activity coefficients for the carbon sites. As the first step towards such a model, a regression line for the Boudouard reaction rate has been established.

Main ore pass systems should last the life of a mine, and too often expensive and hazardous remedial measures are required to repair a damaged ore pass in an attempt to extend its life. In order to maximize the life expectancy of all ore passes at Moab Khotsong, ?wearing blocks? and ?softer support? systems, combined with basic rock engineering principles, have been implemented. Failure of an ore pass can have severe financial implications, both indirectly because the ore pass cannot deliver the broken rock either from level to level or directly in the shaft ore pass system to the required level for tramming to take place, and directly due to the cost of the repair work that is required. Several factors need to betaken into consideration so that production interruptions are eliminated or minimized. Investigations of damaged ore passes at Moab Khotsong and surrounding mines revealed some interesting mechanisms of damage, and some innovative methods of reducing or eliminating the damage have been implemented at Moab Khotsong. The system design was based on 30 years, experience in main shaft rock passes. The design was to counteract scaling, hang-ups and dust problems associated with main rock passes, and the objective was to increase the life of rockpasses. These problems, including the initial design aspects to try and eliminate the repair measures, are discussed in detail.

The utilization of blast furnace and BOF slags has long traditions and well-known applications in the building and road construction industries and in soil conditioning. The starting point for product development has been the basic physico-chemical properties of slags. This development has led to the almost 100% utilization of blast furnace slags and also considerable amounts of steel slags. While new methods and applications are continuously being looked for and developed in order to recycle and utilize all types of slag, there is at the same time an increasing debate over the exact nature of the slags, whether they are products or waste material, and whether they should be considered substances or preparations. These questions have emerged as a consequence of the environmental effects of the slags and current environmental legislation. The environmental effects of slags can be seen to be both beneficial and less beneficial. There is no doubt about their benefits in the road construction industry, as they allow significant savings in terms of natural materials and in transportation. It is also a known fact that using slags as fertilizers and in the cement industry leads to reduction in CO2emissions. The less favourable effects are the possible harmful emissions into the soil and groundwater. In this paper we describe the properties of slag products and their environmental effects according to investigations carried out in Finland. "The South African squat coal pillar strength formula, developed by researchers from the Chamber of Mines Research Organization in the 1980s, predicts an exponential increase in coal pillar strength once a critical width-to-height ratio of 5 is exceeded. The arguments that have been proposed in favour of this formula are discussed critically in this paper.Field experience with squat pillars in the USA and evidence from published physical, analytical, and numerical model pillar studies corroborate the fact that a squat effect is unlikely to occur in coal pillars at width-to-height ratios less than 10. Furthermore, an exponential increase in peak strength of coal pillars does not exist. An alternative design criterion for squat pillars in South Africa is therefore suggested. IntroductionFive decades of coal pillar research in South Africa have produced a wealth of information on the mechanisms contributing to the strength and failure of in-situ coal pillars and accompanying phenomena. The relevant knowledge was sourced from, and for, a South African coal mining environment that remained largely unchanged in the second half of the 20th century. The depth of mining seldom exceeded 250 m, with mined seam thicknesses averaging 3 m and typical pillar width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 3–4.It is therefore not surprising that comparatively little research has been directed at the prediction of coal pillar performance in deeper deposits, where squat pillars of larger width-to-height ratios will be required to support the overlying strata. However, a thorough understanding of squat pillar performance will be necessary should the remaining deep coal deposits of the country be extracted in future, for instance in the Waterberg or Ermelo coalfields.A squat coal pillar strength formula has already been proposed in South Africa. The origin of this formula will be discussed in some detail in the following sections and its appropriateness will be critically reviewed against a great amount of evidence from relevant squat coal pillar research conducted internationally."
