Hillendale Mine is operated by Exxaro KZN Sands, and is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa near the towns of Empangeni and Richards Bay, some 200 km north of Durban. During the mining operation the heavy minerals rutile, ilmenite, zircon and leucoxene are extracted for further beneficiation at a processing complex near the town of Empangeni. The deposit contains approximately 25% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction), and is mined using hydraulic monitoring. Run of mine is gravity fed down launders to pump stations, which deliver the material to a primary wet plant. Slimes is separated from the run of mine prior to the heavy minerals being separated from the sand. Sand tails containing approximately 2-5% slimes is pumped to the mining void. The slimes is thickened to a density of approximately 1.2, and most of the resultant material is pumped to a sub-aerial deposition site (residue dam). The area is characterized by an annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm, which is relatively high by South African standards. From an agricultural perspective the soils are deep and well weathered. Dryland agriculture has been practised on an extensive scale in the area for the past 70 years. Sugar cane in particular is cultivated on and around the mine area. In terms of environmental approvals, the post-mining land use and objectives are defined as economically viable and sustainable sugar cane cultivation in the mined areas. During mining the soil profile is destroyed. In this paper the establishment of a reconstituted soil profile is discussed, with specific reference to the methodology that is being followed to achieve the homogeneous blending of sand and slimes. Defining the rehabilitation strategy and soil specification Strategically Exxaro KZN Sands divided rehabilitation into four aspects, comprising physical rehabilitation (restoration of soil structure), vegetative rehabilitation (restoration of vegetative cover), ecological rehabilitation (restoration of sustainable ecological communities), and sustainability (sustainable man/environment interface) (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). It is believed that the key to successful rehabilitation lies in achieving a substrate (soil) suitable for the establishment of the target vegetation. During the development of the rehabilitation strategy the key factor in the establishment of a suitable soil profile was shown to be the soil water retention of this material. Since dryland agriculture is practised, this aspect becomes critically important in ensuring that the post-mining land use is sustainable (Hattingh et al., in prep.). From a financial perspective, a closure certificate being issued implies that the state takes over financial liability for the rehabilitated land. This has significant implications for the state-the default position will be that all possible latent and residual impacts must be identified and known prior to a closure certificate being issued. From the mine's perspective this precautionary approach by the state implies that post-operational costs cannot be quantified exactly, and our approach is therefore to mitigate the risk of a long post-closure care and maintenance phase by means of addressing all potential latent defects during the operational rehabilitation phase. The financial viability of the soil reconstitution process itself is therefore not measured against other rehabilitation methods, but against the risk of not achieving closure. During a series of technical workshops comprising experts in the various disciplines in the rehabilitation of the soil profile were identified. These aspects include the re-establishment of a functional soil profile, soil physical characteristics, soil chemistry, soil biota, salinization potential, erodibility and soil weathering. The natural soils in the Hillendale area have been classified in terms of the South African soil classification system (MacVicar and co-workers, 1991) and consist of Hutton (orthic topsoils on red apedal subsoils) and Clovelly (orthic top soils on yellow apedal subsoils) soil forms. The topsoils consistently comprise medium to fine grained sand overlying heavier textured sandy clay loam to clayey subsoils. The topsoil structure consists of a single grain structure, whereas subsoils are apedal. These soils are typically deeply weathered and do not show secondary structures. During the mining process a layer of topsoil (300 mm) is stripped off, and the balance of the material down to the footwall is processed. Sand with 2-5% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction) is returned as backfill in order to re-establish the dune to approximate the previous landform. From an agricultural perspective this material is not suitable for the dryland cultivation of sugar cane. A capping of more suitable material therefore has to be provided. The most significant difference between the premining soil form and the backfill material is the percentage slimes, consequently a mixture of the sand and slimes is required as a capping over the backfilled sand. The required thickness of the cap is a function of specifically plant growth requirements, erodibility, weathering and runoff (Hattingh, et al.; in prep.). The percentage slimes required in the cap is a function of mainly soil water requirements (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). The conservative indications to date show that the reconstituted soil profile should consist of a homogeneously blended mixture of 70%-80% sand and 30%-20% slimes up to a maximum of 2 metres thick. This will be sufficient to ensure growth during dry periods.

"SynopsisThe availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced materials, not only during development phases, but in the manufactured components as well. At Necsa, two modern neutron diffractometers equipped with in-situ sample environments, as well as complementary X-ray diffraction instruments, are now available as User Facilities within the National System of Innovation in support of the South African research and industrial communities. Neutrons and X-rays, owing to their different interaction mechanisms with matter, offer complementary techniques for probing crystalline materials. Both techniques enable nondestructive investigation of phenomena such as chemical phase composition, residual stress, and texture (preferred crystallite orientation). More specifically, the superior penetration capabilities of thermal neutrons into most materials allows for the analysis of bulk or localized depth-resolved properties in a wide variety of materials and components. Materials that can be investigated include metals, alloys, composites, ceramics, and coated systems. In particular, depth-resolved analyses using neutron diffraction complements surface investigations using laboratory X-rays in many scientific and engineering topics. The diffraction techniques can add significant downstream value to the anticipated nuclear industry development activities.IntroductionMaterials characterization is central in understanding the relationship between the structure, properties, and performance in order to engineer materials that fit the performance criteria for specific applications. This is conveniently represented in the form of a tetrahedron, generally known as the material science paradigm (Figure 1).The availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced metals, not only during development phases, but in the form of manufactured components. The Kroll process is the traditional method of producing zirconium metal by reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium metal. This paper discusses the production of zirconium metal in a plasma reactor. Anhydrous low-hafnium ZrCl4 and Mg metal were fed continuously to a 30 kW non-transfer plasma reactor at a rate of 0.31 kg.h-1. Due to losses in the system the recovery of crude product was 77.5 %. After purification to remove unreacted feed material and MgCl2 by leaching, >98 % pure zirconium metal powder was obtained. The overall recovery of purified Zr was 74 %. The conversion efficiency of the process was 95 %.

Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

Improving student success rates without compromising the quality of graduates is one of the biggest challenges expanding university programmes are facing in South Africa. By establishing a new Mine Design Laboratory (MDL) for higher learning in Mining Engineering, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Mining) has achieved one of the important goals in its five-year strategic plan, i.e. to improve throughput in all years of study. Although the establishment of the laboratory has been a costly exercise, results so far have shown an improved success rate in most subjects taught in the facility. This paper outlines the design and equipment of the laboratory, the facilities incorporated, a comparison with the old laboratory, and the performance of students?all of which indicate how important it is to have proper facilities to improve the teaching of, and learning by, large classes. Through this initiative, Wits Mining has taken an important step that will contribute to addressing the skills shortages in the mining industry.

A review of recent work being conducted at the university of British Columbia on the modeling of the microstructural evolution during the hot rolling of steel is presented. A mathematical model of heat transfer was developed to describe the thermal field in a slab during rough and finish rolling. The model for rough rolling, discussed in this review, also simulates the growth of oxide scale on the slab surface. Uniaxial tests performed on core from instrumented sites at Amandelbult 1 shaft, Impala 10 shaft and Union Section Spud shaft showed a nonlinear elastic relationship between applied load and induced deformation. This nonlinear behaviour does not appear to be dependent on borehole orientation but in the case of the Amandelbult and Union sites appears to have been influenced by the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling. Cores drilled at these two sites under destressed conditions, such as over a stope, showed a linear elastic response to the applied load whereas most of the cores drilled under relatively high radial stresses were nonlinear. The Impala 10 shaft tests, however, all showed strong nonlinear behaviour irrespective of the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling, although high stress conditions may have influenced the severity of the nonlinearity. A comparison between underground stress change measurements and an elastic model indicated that the rock mass became nonlinear when the virgin stress condition was relaxed to about 10 MPa. The cores for laboratory testing were retrieved from vertical boreholes drilled up from the centre of a stope and from horizontal boreholes drilled over pillars and stopes at about 600 m, 1 100 m and 1 400 m below surface for the three sites respectively. The k-ratios under virgin conditions were estimated from sockets, modelling and stress measurements to be 1.0, 1.3, and 0.5 for the Amandelbult, Impala and Union sites respectively. Of the three sites, therefore, Impala 10 shaft appears to have had the highest virgin stress state. Tests performed on similar rocks from shallower depths at Impala Platinum essentially showed a linear relationship between stress and strain. From the small Impala Platinum rock test database available to the project, it appears that the nonlinear elastic behaviour initiates at this mine from about 1 000 m below surface and seems to become progressively more nonlinear below this depth. In addition, the nonlinear elastic rocks are weaker, have a lower Young?s modulus and a higher Poisson?s ratio than their linear elastic equivalents. Interestingly the tangential Poisson?s ratios of the nonlinear elastic materials are often greater than 0.5 at 50% of the failure stress, suggesting an early failure initiation. The paper describes the microscope and modelling work done to determine the causes of the nonlinear behaviour and discusses some implications of the behaviour for deep-level mining.

Pressure hydrometallurgy operations require vessels to be lined with an impermeable membrane for corrosion protection and one or more courses of refractory or ceramic brick. Examples of unit operations that utilize composite lining systems include pressure oxidation autoclaves, sulphide precipitation autoclaves, chloride leach reactors, flash vessels, cyclone separators, and direct contact condensers (heater vessels and quench vessels). The refractory lining must satisfy multiple requirements: it must thermally insulate the membrane from process fluid, be structurally stable, provide erosion resistance, be chemically compatible with process fluid, and provide an economic service life. New hydrometallurgical processes are pushing the pressure, and temperature with each new generation of plants. A fundamental understanding of all factors affecting the mechanical stability of the lining system is essential as lining designs move further away from the industry?s experience base. The method of designing a refractory lined vessel is examined taking into account the impact of irreversible chemical swell, operating factors, design factors, and installation factors. The effect of geometry and incorporating additional degrees of freedom to the analysis is explored using two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of these additional degrees of freedom on the results of the one-dimensional model are discussed. Keywords refractory lining design,autoclave, finite element analysis.

Several possible physico-chemical properties of composite electrodes for oxygen evolution are presented to describe experimental data for which a mathematical model had been developed. On this basis, local electrical and electrochemical properties of a composite electrode were investigated with conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be shown by CAFM measurement that the boundary between matrix and catalyst particles seemed to have special advantageous electrical properties. The SECM measurements showed the presence of mass transport phenomena with increased surface concentrations, whilst the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer was very small. An intermediate was detected and assigned to be hydrogen peroxide. From all species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (H2O2, H+ and O2), it was concluded that local active spots exist on the electrode on which hydrogen peroxide reacts to oxygen and protons. A two?step two-material process was suggested to explain the whole oxygen evolution mechanism.

1. ANTECEDENTS This present communication refers to the results of the research project entitled "Training in the correct use of chemical oxygen self rescue apparatus and also an analysis of apparatus autonomy", carried out under the auspices of the Specific Collaboration Agreement signed between the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias (Spain) and INSALUD (National Silicosis Institute, Spain). The antecedents of this project lie in work undertaken by the National Silicosis Institute aimed at optimising efficiency in the use of chemical oxygen self rescuers through improvements in worker training. To be precise, by means of Agreements drawn up between the above-mentioned parties, a simulator was designed and incorporated as the basis of a training station within the " Fundación Barredo" of the Industry Council of the Principality of Asturias. This has been operative since the year 2001 and, up to the present, 2300 Asturian coal mine workers have been trained there. What prompted this activity was the observation of various errors in the use of the self rescuers, deriving from their innate characteristics, especially with respect to the sensation of discomfort - the high temperature and humidity of the breathed oxygen, resistance and inconvenience - and limited autonomy. It was precisely this insight that, in critical situations, lack of familiarity with the conditions of discomfort likely to be experienced during the evacuation process might lead to rejection of the equipment, with fatal consequences, that has justified the setting up of this training and simulation centre. The centre is able to provide all mine workers with the necessary training, and experience of the characteristic sensations experienced when using such equipment (Fig.. 1).

Geologists in some underground gold mines collect grab samples from broken ore piles or trucks as a method of grade control. It is often known as muck sampling. Generally, the goal of grab sampling is to try and reconcile the mined grade at the ore source to the predicted grade and/or predict the mill feed grade. The mass of the sample collected is limited by health and safety issues, as well as the capacity of the laboratory to process the samples within a given timeframe. In general terms, grab sampling is known to be problematic because samplers tend to over sample the fines, and/or pick out high-grade fragments; surface sampling of piles does not test material within the pile; muck piles in development drives/faces are likely to be zoned due to the blasting sequence; high or low-grade material may preferentially segregate in the pile during mucking; the five percent mass reject size of the material in muck piles is very large from underground blasting; some correlation usually exists whereby the larger fragments are enriched or depleted in the critical component of value; and the average error made in estimating the true stockpile grade is likely to be high. The method is prone to chronic fundamental sampling, grouping and segregation, delimitation, and extraction errors. Substantial warnings must be given with respect to the use of grab sampling for grade control in gold mines. The method may appear to work sometimes, which can be attributed to a fine gold particle sizing and more disseminated distribution. As with all sampling methods, its appropriateness must be determined by ore characterization and heterogeneity testing to ensure the method suits the ore type.

Finsch Diamond Mine, part of De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM), is situated between Kimberley and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1960 and De Beers assumed full mining rights three years later. Production commenced in 1966 from an opencast mine, and the operation moved underground in 1990 by developing and implementing a new mining method of blast hole open stoping. A mechanized block cave was brought into production in 2005. While block caving was not new to DBCM, with productive caves having operated in Kimberley and Cullinan, from the outset, the Finsch caving operation was designed as the most advanced with a semi-automated ground handling system. The extraction level was laid out as a single sided herringbone system due to the very poor ground conditions on the south side of the pipe. These factors combined to create a unique environment, which necessitated a completely new approach to draw control. The required system was developed by a team consisting of DBCM personnel from head office and Finsch, GEMCOM and Sandvik-Tamrock, the equipment manufacturers. It was essential that the system could be run quickly, provide daily updates and issue calls directly to the LHDs. It was also important that the base data were obtained from the resource model, which was to be depleted on a monthly basis, thus forming a close link between mine planning and draw control. A further requirement of the system was that it would form a central database for the extraction operation where all data pertaining to delays and changes in conditions, be they production or ground condition related, could be recorded and analysed. The design brought together empirical rules and tables developed at Cullinan plus concepts from programming developed for the front cave at Koffiefontein so that the new system was based on sound practical experience. These facets were incorporated into PCBC (GEMCOM) and CMS and PCS (Sandvik-Tamrock programmes). The system has now been operational for just under a year and while modifications have had to be made, it has proved itself as a practical and reliable tool with which to manage the draw control at Finsch. The system is unforgiving and has forced the production team to focus on the specified drawpoints. Problems have been encountered but most of these have been related to re-educating a workforce, familiar with a flexible mining method, to the strict discipline required for a modern block cave.

China?s engagement with the African continent has increased impressively in the past decade. Even though China is not the African continent?s largest stakeholder, the rapidly increasing engagement is evident in the huge number of Chinese migrants that have come to Africa in the wake of unprecedented trade and investment levels, as well as in increasing diplomatic and political interactions, which has taken most other commercial partners by surprise. All but four countries in Africa have adopted the ?One China?1 policy stance; and in so doing opened the door for new or strengthened commercial dealings with China, including increasing investments into Africa?s extractive industries. This has been particularly evident since the turn of the century, with a clear shift in China?s policy towards Africa elevating the continent in China?s foreign policy objectives. As such, Africa has become a strategic focus2 for Chinese outward bound and internationalizing companies, especially in the extractive industries. This planned shift in focus is based largely on geo-strategic and commercial needs and interests, rather than previous ideological ones.3

Introduction There is a continual economic push to increase the productivity of mobile material handling equipment used in open pit mines. This includes the largest electrical machines: excavators (draglines and shovels) and haul trucks (Figure 1). Existing DC drive systems used on this type of equipment are a mature technology. They have no further economic potential to accommodate larger equipment be-cause of the high maintenance costs and the trade-off between power, speed and space limitations of their DC traction mo-tors. In recent years the large-scale introduction of AC drives in the rail transportation sector1,and the availability of poworful GTO and IGBT modules have led to the devolopment of compact, powerful, an drugged AC inverter drives specifically adapted to the mining market2,3. The major advantage of AC drives stems from the squirrel cage induction motor which eliminates the DC commutator. This leads directly to higher speed, increased power density, higher reliability, greater efficiency and lower maintenance of the traction motors. In the context of excavators and haul trucks, additional benofits driving the move to AC are (i) increased production rate due to higher machine speed, and power density, (ii) increased reliability and lower cost inverters using 3.3 kV IGBT's, (iii) active front-end (AFE) technology that improves compatibility with the mine power grid and an proved dynamic response,(iv) intelligent converter design that provides increased fault tolerance, (v) contextual maintenance software that facilitates trouble-shooting, and (vi) remote diagnostic capabilities. This paper describes how these and other features of AC drives lead to higher productivity in mining shovels, draglines, and haul trucks. Minimize the cost per ton of material moved The overall goal that drives design and sales of excavators and haul trucks is the constant requirement to reduce the cost per ton of material moved. Whether this involves blasting, loading trucks, or hauling material to the crusher or waste dump, equipment that reduces the cost per ton of material moved contributes to a more profitable operation. An accurate determination of the true cost per ton to move material must consider every aspect of the equipment and the circumstances under which it is used. Procurement and capital costs, fuel, operating, and maintenance costs over the useful life, and eventually the cost of scrapping should all be taken into account to determine the real cost per ton of moving material. We will focus on two broad areas that relate to the equipment itself; factors influencing the amount of material moved (Table I) and factors influencing the cost of material moved (Table II). Emphasis will be given to those elements in the tables that most influence the productivity of excavators and haul trucks due to the application of AC drive technology. Maximize the amount of material moved Maximize production rate he production rate refers to the quantity of material that can be loaded or moved per hour. This generally involves larger, faster, and more powerful equipment that operates more reliably to minimize down-time. AC motors Figure 2 compares the hoist motor speed-torque response of two 77 t (85 short ton) shovels, one AC the other DC. The absence of commutation limits on the AC motors enables the AC shovel to operate with a greater area under the speed-torque curve, resulting in faster lowering speeds and reduced times for the swing to return to the pit. This is especially important for short swing angles where the operator may have to wait for the dipper to lower. Reducing the cycle time by 6 to 8 seconds at the shovel translates into an increase in shovel production of about 20%. Perceptions of disaster caused by burning fossil fuels have reached such a pitch that they seriously threaten the very future of the industry. Coal is a dirty word. A leader in Business Day(January 192009) claimed ?There is no disputing that renewable and non-polluting energy sources are preferable to the country?the true cost of so-called cheap coal-fired power stations is neither reflected nor accounted for by Eskom?the true and immediate but unacknowledged cost of continued coal mining is apparent in the catastrophic level of acidification from mining runoff of all significant natural water resources in the country?and their waters have been rendered unfit for human consumption. Air quality is in a similar state with?increases in pulmonary disease causing workforce absenteeism and compromised childhood development, among many other health problems recorded in areas polluted by coal mining.? The upshot is that our latest coal-fired power station, Kusile, is being required to use flue gas desulphurization. The costs are considerable, and the benefits minimal. Meanwhile, exports are being threatened by EU directives and an assumption that South African coal gives off excessive quantities of SOx and NOx when burned. The industry needs to arm itself with clear responses to these and similar misconceptions, and to communicate those responses loudly and clearly, if it is to survive.

The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]
