Oebswana's Jwaneng Mine (south-central Botswana) is the richest diamond mine? in the world and has been contributing substantial revenue to Botswana since the mine started operating in 1982. The resource consists of 3 separate volcanic pipes/vents namely North, South and Centre pipes (2 additional small kimberlite bodies have also been intersected within the mining pit) which erupted through Transvaal strata and the overlying Karoo sediments -245 million years ago. Although earlier drilling and geophysical surveys suggest that the 3 pipes extend to depths greater than 1 km below the surface, the resource is only at an indicated level of confidence to a depth of 400m, and mining activities will start exploiting the inferred resource material below 400m in 2014.

Generally, regrind circuits are used to increase the degree of liberation of value minerals which are fed to flotation circuits. At the regrind circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper complex, four ball mills are in closed circuit with their hydrocyclone clusters. In the initial design of the plant, feed and underflow percent solids, and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones were 39% and 65%, and 15psi, respectively. Over the years, due to a reduction in the feed grade from 1.17% to 0.67% and changes in the operational conditions, the feed rate to each hydrocyclone cluster has decreased from 401 to 70t/h and consequently the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids have reduced to 4psi, 17% and 25%, respectively. The main objective of this research was to audit the feed solids concentration and pressure drop of the hydrocyclones and make the necessary modifications based on the Plitt’s model. The results of sampling showed that water recovery to underflow was 59% which was higher than normal values. By reducing the number of operating regrind mills from 4 to 2, the feed rate to each mill increased. After this modification and taking necessary measures in the plant to implement the new operating approach, the pressure drop, feed and underflow percent solids increased to 18psi, 28% and 58%, respectively. The water recovery of the hydrocyclones underflow decreased from 59% to 12%. These changes in addition to increasing the circuit efficiency saved 1000 kWh energy and decreased ball consumption by 925 ton/year because of reduction in the number of operating ball mills. The comments by Mr Chaston were constructive and much appreciated. Considering firstly the recovery of cassiterite from fine deslimed material. A size distribution analysis shows that 58 per cent of cassiterite in Union Tin flotation concentrate reports in the minus 15 micron (quartz) size range. This is achieved at a recovery of 67 per cent and concentrate grade of 42,6 per cent. It is of interest to note that at Altenberg in East Germany 85 per cent of the tin in deslimed minus 43 micron material is recovered into a 14 to 16 per cent Sn concentrate using para-tolyl arsonic acid as collector. Reconcentration of this material is then carried out using two shaking table stages which recover 53 per cent of the tin in a 50 per cent Sn concentrate. Flotation was resorted to after recovery rates of 35 per cent and concentrate grade of 30 per cent had been achieved in a 275 ton per day plant comprising 130 tables. Tests on tabling of deslimed minus 43 micron material have not been carried out at Union Tin. The cost of equipment actually associated with cassiterite flotation amounts to about R60 000. The

In the last decades, the exponential increase in the cells’ volume resulted in significant advantages such as investment costs, footprint and energy savings. However, in larger size cells, despite the increased diameter/height ratio, new constraints arose related to the need for decreasing the larger froth transport distances to enhance the froth recovery. Thus, the use of froth crowders and internal launders became compulsory to maintain the froth transport distances but decreasing the ratio between gas and collected mineral flowrates. Consequently, the bubble load will increase until reaching a critical bubble surface coverage. In this paper, the concentrate carrying capacity (tph/m2) is described in terms of the bubble surface coverage (bubble loading) at the pulp-froth interface and the froth recovery (froth transport) and is evaluated as a function of the cells’ volume and operating variables. A sensitivity analysis, based on industrial operating and design conditions, such as superficial gas rate, particles size, froth crosssectional area and cells’ volume, was developed for evaluating the metallurgical performance of cells from 100 to 630 m3. Results show that limiting carrying capacity can arise for the whole range of cells’ volume, depending on critical operating conditions, particularly in first rougher cells and cleaning stages of industrial flotation circuits. The increase in cells’ volume consistently increases the bubble loading (bubble surface coverage) under all conditions, approaching the limiting conditions more rapidly in the case of cells without internal launders. Otherwise, the limiting condition was achieved when the particle size DPS decreased from 50 to 20 (μm) and for superficial gas rates significantly less or larger than 1 (cm/s). The use of internal launders allows for increasing the range of the operating conditions needed to reach a certain carrying capacity. This paper summarizes the investigations carried out into a defect involving the corners of billets rolled from continuously cast blooms, which broke open during the rolling process. As it was believed that the defect must be connected with the formation of subcutaneous blowholes in the bloom, the investigations were directed towards an understanding of the roles of the three gases involved in the process. In an extensive trial programme, samples were taken from the heat at all stages of processing, as well as from all the raw materials and alloys. The main sources of nitrogen were found to be re blows, pick-up from the alloys added to the ladle (especially graphite), and open-stream casting. The major source of hydrogen was moisture in the alloys, especially high-carbon ferromanganese and silicomanganese. Further, it was established that the moisture content of the alloys is closely related to the appearance of the defect in steels with a carbon content of less than 0,20 per cent; 72 per cent of all the defects were present in this type of steel. Most of the remaining defects were found in steels with a carbon content of more than 0,60 per cent, where the nitrogen content was substantially higher than in the lower-carbon steels. It is suggested that the defect arises from the combined effect of oxygen. nitrogen, and hydrogen. Its occurrence in low- and high-carbon steels is triggered by the formation of subcutaneous blowholes when the critical oxygen level for carbon monoxide blowholes is lowered by the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen and nitrogen respectively.

Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.

The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. The general standard of engineering in South Africa will, it is believed, reach new heights after the establishment of the S.A. Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE) in February, 1969. The Council is being created to establish standards for professional engineers in this country and ensure that the quality of engineering is maintained at a high level. In terms of the Act of Parliament under which the new Council will operate, all consulting engineers will have to be registered if they wish to remain in private practice. While engineers who are not in private practice cannot be compelled to register, it will be in their interests to do so, according to a statement issued by Mr M. R. Gericke, chairman of a Shadow Council which is at present preparing for registration and drafting the requirements for registration. Registration is seen as an important move towards maintaining the quality of engineering in South Africa. Engineers will be encouraged to strive for professional status by gaining the necessary qualifications and the varied range of experience required by the Council before registration. All work done by registered professional engineers will have to conform to certain minimum standards. A spokesman for the Council has urged all engineers to ensure that they apply for registration when the Act comes into force in February. The Council is also anxious to gain the co-operation of employers in ensuring that the holders of professional engineering posts will be registered. Full information regarding registration will be sent to engineers throughout South Africa early this year, and announcements will appear in the press.

The principal advantages of fibre optics as compared to copper wire are well known and include almost perfect electromagnetic isolation, light weight, small size, excellent transmission security and substantially better bandwidth/distance performance. The decreasing cost of the optical fibre technology (both fibre cable and equipment) has led to another generation of private networks, which provide much larger bandwidths, very high reliability and an increase of the maximum geographical coverage. The larger bandwidth allows to transport all types of information on a single network. Typical communication requirements are speech (audio), computer data, LAN info, control information, video, etc. OTN or ‘Open Transport Network’ is a transmission system based on the latest available technology in fibre optics. It is characterized by the dual ring approach, resulting in high network availability, and the integration of different types of services in one network. As such, it can fulfil almost all transmission requirements for voice, data, LAN, video and any special service required.

The improvement of coal waste management practices, through the co-disposal of waste rock with sulphur-lean fine waste tailings (<1 mm in size), can potentially mitigate acid rock drainage (ARD). On exposure to natural oxidants, the sulphide compounds present in mine discards generate acidity, creating a cyclical oxidation process intensified by iron and sulphur oxidising microorganisms. To inhibit the emergence of ARD, a stable mine dump may be constructed that is structurally stable and incompressible through the mixing of complementary waste fractions that reduce voids and access to acid generating surfaces. However, large voids manifest as scale increases, due to decreased particle interlock, enabling the unrestricted access of oxidants leading to the early onset of ARD. To avoid this phenomenon, enhanced packing approaches based on geochemical and geotechnical characterisation tests were employed to improve bed stability. These were assessed for long-term prevention using aggressive oxidative conditions typical of heap leaching applications. Favourable results were obtained for both blended and multi-layered systems. However, long-term success was most notable in beds with alternating layers of waste rock and fine waste tailings with co-mingled systems being more susceptible to failure. Deconstructed co-disposed beds provided valuable insight into post-leach structural transformations. Results indicated that relative changes in initial coarse discards to fine waste ratios were most notable in blended systems. Mass fractions of the comparatively more mobile fine wastes increased axially down these test columns that ultimately resulted in increased contact of oxidants with the acid generating waste discards. Conversely, more consistent ratios were observed in multi-layered configurations. In these systems, near impervious hardpans were created by the moisture retaining fine tailings, forming stable structures with neutralising barriers sustained at each alternating layer. Consistent with post-leach geotechnical characteristics, static acid-base accounting tests showed that the uppermost sections of blended systems were more susceptible to oxidation due to structural failure with fine particles migration, while the more stable multi-layered configuration evenly maintained neutralising capacity. Introduction Although months have passed since APCOM 87, held from 19th to 23rd September, 1987, the vivid memories of all aspects of its activities remain as clear in one&apos;s mind as if it all happened only yesterday. The Symposium, which was held at the Johannesburg Sun Hotel, was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in collaboration with the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), supported by The Geostatistical Association of South Africa, The Operations Research Society of South Africa, and the Computer Society of South Africa, and was backed financially by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. The total number of registrants amounted to 375 delegates and 50 affiliates: 100 of the delegates were from outside the Republic of South Africa and represented 15 countries, namely Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Namibia, Phillipines, Sweden, Turkey, United States of America, West Germany, and Zimbabwe.

The Chamber of Mines Research Organization has been evaluating three membrane-desalination processes for use within the South African mining industry. These processes are electrodialysis reversal (EDR), tubular reverse osmosis (IRO), and slurry precipitation and recycle reverse osmosis (SPARRO). The evaluation of EDR and TRO is complete, and the operating costs (1988) associated with each process are expected to be about 50 cents per kilolitre for a plant of 50 l/s (4 Ml/d) installed capacity. The SPARRO process is still being evaluated. Pilot plant results, water Qualities, and expected capital costs are presented where appropriate.

The beneficiation equipment under the control of plant metallurgists exploits the differences in the physical properties between valuable and waste mineral components. In many cases, laboratory results are too late for process control and can only serve the purpose of "post" reports, the calculation of a mass balance and the issue of a quality certificate. As a result, experienced operators regularly adjust separation equipment based on the colour and texture of the various product streams in the beneficiation plant. Metallurgists quickly learn to recognise the different minerals in their ore body. The stereo microscope has been a valuable tool used by operators to quantify known mineral species. For many years it was the only practical method available for the purpose of process control and even for quality contro1. The modem spectroscope is far superior to the human eye and can rapidly detect a change in mineral composition. New generation optical scanners and digital signal processors can provide useful signals, related to mineral composition that can readily be applied for the purpose of process control. Successful case studies, covering dry in-line and slurry applications as well as in-plant fast spot analysers are presented.

The utilization of centralized blasting systems is progressively becoming a feature of the South African mining industry, owing to increased pressure from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to ensure safer blasting conditions. The purpose of a centralized blasting system (CBS) is to ensure reduced blasting-related incidents and to improve the underground working environment for the mine?s employees. The brief from Samancor Western Chrome Mines (WCM) pertaining to this study was to explore?at a conceptual level?all variables pertaining to the implementation of the CBS. Studies have indicated that Sasol?s SafeBlast? was preferred due to low overall risks and user-friendliness. Empirical observations, however, indicated that attention should be given to the current shaft-clearing procedure and to the installation of additional transformers. This is required to co-ordinate the power supply from 2 level to 10 level with the required supply of the network slave station. A cost analysis indicated that an electronically initiated CBS will result in a R24 cost increase per panel, which relates to a mere 1% cost increase per panel. This cost, in addition to the R1.1 million capital cost, proved to be negligible in comparison to the possible direct and indirect costs incurred by the mine in the event of a blasting-related incident. It was found that Samancor should conduct further studies incorporating the necessary requirements to ensure a successful transition, while considering all stakeholders on the mine. This study proved that the transition to a CBS would ensure safe and efficient blasting at Samancor?s Mooinooi Mine.

A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

Activated carbons used in the precious metals extraction industry are characterized by large internal surface areas and a great affinity for metal ions. The purpose of this research is to prepare activated carbon from a South African bituminous coal by physical activation that is suitable and cost-effective for use in the extraction of metals. The quality of the coal-based activated carbon may not prove to be as good as activated carbon produced from other traditional sources, but the production costs involved may make South African coal a feasible alternative feedstock. The activated carbons produced were characterized by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area, activated carbon pH, and phenol adsorption studies and the results compared to the results from a commercially available activated carbon, Norit RO 0.8 (control sample). Bituminous coals from various sources including Witbank Seam 4 and Free State coal were used in this study. The preparation method chosen was physical activation using superheated steam. The effects of process variables such as activation time (1-3 h) and temperature (600-800°C) were studied in order to optimize those parameters. The activated carbon surface area was characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77K. BET surface area analysis showed that Witbank Seam 4 coal activated at a temperature of 800°C and activation time of 3 hours resulted in a surface area of 340 m2/g. Quality control of each sample was performed by measuring the pH of a known amount of the prepared activated carbon in distilled water over time. Results showed that the pH of some of the prepared activated carbons reached a value of 11. Phenol adsorption results for the different activated carbons prepared corresponded well to the results obtained for the Norit RO 0.8 activated carbon sample.

The geostatistical methods given for the estimation of low-ash coal reserves take into account the geological structure of the seam, and consequently give far more reliable results than have been obtained in the past. Confidence limits are given for all the estimates.
