The new sorting system has been developed to achieve efficient separation at low mineral content levels. The system employs high resolution X-ray sensors providing multi-energy analysis, thus giving maximal information about processed materials measurable by X-ray radiography. It makes it possible to analyse the internal structure of the particles and directly detect inclusion of minerals and metals like copper or gold. The paper describes sorting application examples for zinc, lead, copper and gold ore with low metal content below 0.1% of Cu. The sorting system still allows high efficiency analysis, quantification and removal of rock particles representing waste fraction with no metal or a negligible amount being uneconomic to process. This brings a huge advantage during pre-concentration, where almost no losses of valuable minerals in the waste fraction can be achieved. In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. Keywords: Sphalerite, Bio leaching, Chemical leaching Sphalerite concentrates were prepared from tailings dam samples obtained from Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. The samples were subjected to froth flotation and concentrates containing between 7% and 14% Zn were prepared. Leaching of these froth flotation concentrates were studied in ferric chloride solutions at different Fe3+ concentrations for different times at different temperatures with the influence of other species on the kinetics in mind. Complementary to this research, GeoBiotics, LLC and Exxaro Resources have developed proprietary bioleaching technology for the oxidation of base metals concentrates using GEOCOAT bio heap leaching technology in a sulphate medium. The ferric chloride laboratory work was performed in a fluidising leach reactor. The studied material was obtained from flotation concentrate produced during an investigation into the recoverability of a tailings pile at Rosh Pinah mine in Namibia. The optimum conditions for the laboratory investigation were found to be a Fe3+ concentration of 0.3 mol/dm3 at 80°C. A control was performed by using synthetic zinc sulphide. GEOCOAT evaluation tests are performed for the purpose of evaluating the bioleaching of ore and flotation concentrates by means of mesophilic bacteria, Column tests were carried out on the flotation scavenger concentrate from Rosh Pinah to assess the application of the GEOCOAT® process for the oxidation of a low grade zinc concentrate. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the Kinetic models and the experimental data by plotting the fraction of Zinc leached against time and applying the different equations to the data. The kinetic models were applied to the data obtained from both the test regimes. Habashi (1999) proposed that if a process is controlled by a chemical reaction at the interface (phase boundary controlled reaction), the following equation applies. kCt =1 ? (1-R) 1/3 Alternatively a process is controlled by diffusion through the product layer the following equation applies: [kt = 1 23- X (1 ? X) 2/3] As the anodic dissolution reaction progresses, reaction product forms either a more or less dense reaction product layer on surface As this product layer forms, a diffusion problem develops governed by the nature of the product layer. The conclusion from the study was that the kinetics is very dependent on the type of ore processed relating to the mineral composition of the ore body.

The experiment with backfill at Harmony was mainly an attempt to improve the ground conditions in a particularly tricky section of the mine. A deslimed tailings system was selected for financial reasons, ease of installation, ease of operation and its low level of mechanization. The design of the system has three aspects: firstly, to define the parameters of the backfill material itself; secondly, to design a reliable plant which could consistently produce the desired material in sufficient quantities; and, thirdly, to design a fill distribution system for maximum reliability in the shaft, minimum pipe line velocity, pressure and cost in the horizontal sections and consistency and reliability at the delivery end. The system was successfully constructed and commissioned in a short space of time at a relatively low cost. It has now reached its full potential, and very encouraging results have been achieved with regard to cost savings, ground conditions, ventilation and accident statistics.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southernsector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite-anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only theUG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated. The effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+), and temperature on the extraction were studied. Using 0.1 M Cyanex 923 the extraction of Cu(II) was 6.7 per cent from 3 M HCl, which increased up to 78.5 per cent with 6.5 M HCl and then decreased due to acid extraction by the extractant. The maximum extraction (97.5 per cent) was obtained with 1 M Cyanex 923 from 5 M HCl solution. A mathematical model has been developed to describe solvent extraction equllibria over wide ranges of concentration of extractant, acid, and chloride ions. The composition of the extracted species has been predicted on the basis of slope analysis results and extraction equilibrium modelling. The negative values of enthalpy change and entropy change confirm the exothermic formation of the extracted complex.

The copper industry is cyclical with the price determined by market forces (i.e. the balance between supply and demand for the metal.) The period of each cycle typically varies between 6 to 9 years. These cycles drive decision making for exploration, new project and mine development, mine closures, process improvement, research and development, and technological innovation. The gold industry is fundamentally different from copper in that supply and demand do not, alone, determine metal price and many other factors play a key role, including global and regional financial conditions, political stability, and the global future economic outlook. However, the gold price experiences trends and longer term cycles that similarly drive business decision making. This paper examines developments in the copper industry that have occurred over the past few price cycles (approximately 20 years) and explores how the lessons learned can be applied to gold extraction. A number of specific examples and opportunities are discussed in detail, including; technology development and innovation, cost control and business improvement, material characterization, comminution equipment, biological heap leaching, and concentrate pressure leaching.

"In previous work by the authors, it was established that additions of 0.2 at.% Ru to an Fe-40 at.% Al alloy improved the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy. The alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering and the work showed that nonequilibrium processing was able to significantly refine the grain size of the material. The sintered material had a higher hardness than the as-cast material and the change in grain size did not significantly affect the oxidation and corrosion. In the present research, the mechanically alloyed powder was coated onto a mild steel substrate using cold-spray coating at a gas pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 500°C. The coatings were found to be 5–10 um thick, although thicknesses of up to 30 um were observed. The coated materials were subjected to oxidation and corrosion tests to determine the effectiveness of the coating in increasing the oxidation and corrosion resistance of mild steel. This was done to determine the effectiveness of cold-spray coating as a technique to coat these mechanically alloyed powders. IntroductionPrevious work conducted by Mintek (Couperthwaite et al., 2013, 2015) investigated the effect of precious metal additions on the structure, oxidation and corrosion properties of an Fe-40 at.% Al (Fe- Al) alloy. Initial work determined that additions of more than 0.5 at.% precious metal did not improve the oxidation and corrosion properties of the materials and in some cases even decreased the resistance to corrosion. Further work identified Pt and Ru as beneficial additions to the FeAl alloy. Four alloys were then produced by mechanical alloying and sintering (FeAl–0.2 at.% Pd, FeAl–0.2 at.% Ru, FeAl–0.5 at.% Ag, FeAl–0.5 at.% Pt). These alloys were all successfully produced by melting and casting and mechanical alloying sintering and it was found that the nonequilibrium processing greatly decreased the grain size of the materials compared to the ascast materials. It was found that the additions of Ru and Pt were still the most beneficial to the oxidation and corrosion properties, with Ru being considered the most beneficial."

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis has been widely adopted in the geochemical and environmental field as a cost-saving alternative to standard analyses. This paper outlines the efficacy of a method for indirectly quantifying organic copper content in solvent extraction circuits via stripping of the chelated metal with concentrated sulfuric acid in a single contact and subsequent pXRF aqueous analysis. pXRF analysis is common within the mining industry but presents unique challenges with liquid analysis, the most prevalent of which are briefly discussed. This method was developed specifically for mining operations with regional constraints and limited resources. Providing an in-field alternative to flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, this entirely mobile XRF analysis method produces consistent and accurate results within minutes and at a fraction of the cost.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used. This research study includes studies carried out on the recovery of unburned carbon in the ashes of Tuncbilek Thermal Power Plant. Bottom ashes have been identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. These samples are potentially of class F type and have significant amounts of unburned coal. According to the ash amount that units in the thermal power plant produce, and the analyses of the samples mixed, which used certain amounts in flotation tests, it was found that the bottom ash includes 91.47% ash in dry form and 8.53% combustible matter, and the lower calorific value is 491 kcal/kg. Optimum flotation conditions to get the unburned carbon were subsequently determined by examination of the optimum flotation grain size, pulp density, collector type and amount, depressant type and amount, frother type and amount, agitation speed, and froth-taking time. While the lower calorific value of the thermal power plant bottom ashes of the 3rd , 4th and 5th units and the mixed bottom ash sample was, respectively, 959, 469, 279 and 491 kcal/kg in dry form, it increased to 2490, 1312, 786 and 1348 kcal/kg in the product obtained as a result of flotation in optimum conditions. "Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. Determining the most convenient plant location is one of the most commonly encountered problems in engineering applications. This paper presents a fuzzy multiple attribute decision making (FMADM) model which is developed for the selection of the optimum plant location for natural stone factories in the mining industry. The criteria affecting the decision making process in natural stone industry were determined to solve the plant location problem in the FMADM model. To determine the optimum plant location for a new natural stone factory, which is planned to be established by a mining firm located in the Eskisehir region of Turkey, an analysis was carried out by incorporating the method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. The analysis shows that the Yager?s method can easily be applied to the selection of plant location in the natural stone and mining industry when the difficulties encountered in the application process of the AHP method is taken into account. The Tati Activox® Project will be the first full-scale implementation of the patented Activox® process (The Tati Activox® project was deferred in 2008. Please refer to the Norilsk Nickel press issue on the topic for more info). The process was developed by Norilsk Process Technology and has been tested on Tati mine sulphide concentrates in laboratory, pilot and demonstration plant scales and demonstrated its viability. There are inherent risks to the final scale-up of the process from the demo plant and one of them will be investigated in this paper. Compartment 1 is designed to leach approximately 77% of the total nickel leached. For this reason agitation requirements in the first compartment of the autoclave are reviewed. An attempt is made to minimize the process and mechanical risks associated in achieving oxygen mass transfer into the slurry solution. The agitator powers for oxygen mass transfer are calculated using empirical correlations and compared to demonstration plant testwork. The resulting gassed power per unit volume (P/V) is higher than most commercial autoclaves and raises uncertainty on the viability of using such high unit power inputs. Additionally, there is concern about the ability of the autoclave shell to withstand and support the higher loading of large agitators. An alternative solution to designing for the increased P/V is assessed in which the number of compartments within the autoclave is reduced from 5 to 4 by removing the compartment wall separating compartments 1 and 2. This results in an enlarged first compartment containing 3 agitators instead of 2. Therefore the compartment 1 oxygen demand is supplied through 3 agitators, which lowers the P/V per agitator. The reduction in the number of autoclave compartments raises the potential for short-circuiting the mean flow pattern by slurry particles. Short-circuiting and low velocity zones could result in a lower recovery of metal and localized hot spots, respectively. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was conducted to quantify these concerns and also to evaluate further design considerations. The results indicate that the proposed design change to 4 compartments affects short-circuiting. The impact of increased short-circuiting on the overall autoclave recoveries is not quantified, however; it is expected to be negligible based on testwork done in the Tati Demonstration Plant and similar modifications made to another operating autoclave. The CFD analysis also suggests that there will be no low velocity zones within the compartment.

"In deep excavations under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock undergoes creep and other time-dependent effects that may result in instability. This study involves an analysis of the typical damage to the surrounding rock in the deep tunnels of the Jinchuan nickel mine in China. In order to understand the creep mechanism, triaxial creep laboratory tests were conducted under high stress. The creep characteristic curves and the Nishihara model parameters of typical rock were obtained from these tests. The numerical simulations, with which the creep model is developed, were performed using Flac3D. The creep model parameters were back-analysed on the basis of field monitoring data. Finally, appropriate support schemes for deep tunnels are suggested. The creep deformation of rock increases with time and axial load. At the same load level, the creep deformation of unloading is greater than that of loading. The simulated deformations of the surrounding rock are coincident with those from in situ monitoring, indicating the applicability of the presented rock creep model in situations of high ground stress. The results constitute a reference for support design in deep mining tunnels.IntroductionThe excavation of underground caverns can alter the natural stress field of the surrounding rock. In deep engineering projects under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock shows obvious creep properties and time effects (Yao, 2005; Liu, 1994). The time effect of excavation not only causes decompression of the floor and increases sidewall stress, but also leads to stress concentration at the corners of the excavation, which influences the stability of the surrounding rock in a very complex manner.Many researchers have studied the creep properties of rock. ‘Griggs (1939) showed that creep occurs in sandstone, shale, and silty sandstone rock under the load of 12.5%–80% of the failure load.’ Subsequently, much research has been published on rock creep tests, including the uniaxial compressive creep test, the triaxial compressive creep test, the discontinuity rock shearing test, and field tests (Wawersik, 1974; Amadei et al., 1980; Okubo et al., 1991; Jin et al.,1995). A rheological model is used to describe the complex rheological deformation of material. This model is based on various fundamental parameters including rock elasticity, plasticity, and viscous properties, which can be combined into a constitutive model to reflect the rheological properties of various types of rocks. Wang et al. (2014) studied the creep– damage–rupture characteristics of rock salt by applying a creep-damage model. Munson (1997) developed a multi-mechanism constitutive model of creep of polycrystalline rock salt based on steady-state creep and modified it to incorporate transient creep through work hardening and recovery. An elasto-viscoplastic approach was developed to simulate the timedependent nature of the fracture zone (Malan, 1999). Rheological models were proposed to understand the collapse of iron ore mines in Lorraine by Dragan et al. (2003)."
