In August 1965, the late Mr Alan Smith, then Mill Superintendent at Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (GMK), Australia, asked me to investigate the planting of vegetation on the GMK slimes dams in order to ease the dust problem in urban and industrial areas-a problem that is caused largely by dust from these barren slimes dams. My early sources of information were the comprehensive papers in various issues of the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, the climate of Johannesburg differs from that of Kalgoorlie. The average Johannesburg rainfall, which falls mostly in summer, is 730 mm, and the average maximum summer temperature is 26°C (top 34°C). The winters are cool, the average maximum being 18°C (low -7°C). Kalgoorlie, on the other hand, receives, on average, 257 mm of sporadic rainfall, has hot dry summers with an average maximum of 35°C (top 45°C), and cool winters with an average maximum of 18°C (low -2°C). My obvious choice was to look at established trees growing on the GMK lease. A number of Athel pines were growing vigorously adjacent to the Oroya mining and geology offices and also on a nearby sand dump. The Athel pine (Tamarix aphylla), which is native to North Africa, Asia, and India, was originally introduced into Australia in 1936 by Mr Essington Lewis, then manager of BHP. His cuttings were planted in Whyalla, where some difficulty had been experienced in finding trees and shrubs that would flourish despite the district's low rainfall. In August 1965, cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1 cm diameter were taken from the GMK trees, stripped of leaves, and placed in jars of water in the sun. When the cuttings had sprouted both leaves and roots, they were planted in local soil in tins (about 20 cm high and 10 cm in diameter), and watered daily. In October 1965, when the new shoots were about 8 cm long, the trees were transplanted onto a lower flat section¬approximately 30 m wide, 30 m long, and 2 m high-of the Trafalgar slimes dam. No additional soil or fertilizer was used, and the trees were planted in their tins, the bases of which had been removed (the tin would eventually rust away). A few common varieties of non-prickly cactus and two native salt bush (spp Atriplex) were also planted, but did not survive, probably because of the acidity of the slime. During the summer of 1965/1966, Kalgoorlie's rainfall was 88 per cent above the average, and this probably helped the trees to survive. The moisture content was usually about 2,5 per cent from about 10 cm below the surface, and the pH value of the slime (d80 approximately 75 µm) was about 6. The trees were watered twice a week for the first four months and then left untended. By 1974 they had grown to only about 0,7 m, which indicated that their growth in slime was very slow. Other Athel pines were planted on the wall of the dam, but did not survive beyond 1974, probably because of the steep (about 500) slope and the hardness of the walls, which were initially formed by hand-shovelling of the slime as the height of the dam was raised. Five of the six Athel pines planted in 1965, which probably reached maturity (approximately 5 m in height) in 1981-16 years after being planted-have survived. In the early 1980s, waste rock had to be dumped on the dam, but the management of KMA (now KCGM) took care to ensure that the trees were not buried. Trials are being conducted on other tailings dams so that the performance of cuttings taken from the trees on Trafalgar dam can be compared with that of cuttings taken at various sites in Western Australia. It might also be worth while for an attempt to be made to strike cuttings from Trafalgar dam in pots containing different mixtures of soil and slime.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains anew method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. "Analytical Chemistry is moving rapidly towards a concept where technicians have to do no more than press a button and print the result from an instrument that is a featureless ""black box"". In this environment we must ask how much traditional ''wet chemistry"" is still required for undergraduate students.Methods that can be fully automated will become increasingly important. An example of such a method is that of the slurry nebulisation and ICP-OES analysis of precious metal concentrate. Grinding the sample and adding Triton X100 as dispersant, complete analysis time is in the order of 90 min as apposed to the traditional Carius tube method which could take as long as 24 h. For most of the elements studied, the results using ""in-house"" reference material for calibration and as samples as well were within the 95% confidence level. Elements of low concentration in the sample (As, Bi and Se) were not within that level."

The management of unpaved mine road networks on large surface mines rarely results in optimal road maintenance strategies and minimised total road-user costs. This is ascribed mostly to the complex and dynamic combination of variable road networks and loading and discharge points. In a dynamic mining environment - typically those mines in which production is managed by a centralised truck dispatch system ? there is no guarantee that a particular road maintenance intervention will contribute significantly to reducing total road-user costs or increasing productivity. Most large surface mines operating ultra-heavy mine trucks rely on an integrated on-board diagnostic data collation, communication and GPS-asset location system as a real-time fleet management tool. By extending this system to incorporate a multi-sensor analytical procedure in which specific truck vital signs are monitored and filtered, a road defect can be recognised and a trigger level set to relay the location of defects on the mine haul road to the centralised truck data management system. Previous work established the feasibility of the multi-sensor approach to road defect recognition on large mine haul trucks, and outlined the defect recognition, analytical and modelling issues and system limitations. This paper presents the development of the analytical procedure used as a basis for evaluating the truck on-board data to establish maintenance priorities amongst a network of mine roads. Following an introduction to the system architecture, the results of system field trials are analysed and the results discussed in the light of defect density and traffic volume as the primary variables in an approach to prioritising road maintenance. The paper concludes that by supplementing the existing mine communication and asset management systems, road maintenance can be managed on a near real-time basis and maintenance equipment dispatched to where most immediate benefit will realised from a maintenance intervention on the network, thereby generating the maximum improvement in service and reduction in cost per ton hauled.

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). There are many near-surface deposits with considerable vertical extent that have the potential to be mined by a combined method of open-pit and underground methods. In this regard, there is often a point called ?transition depth? where a decision has to be made whether to continue deepening the pit or change to underground methods. Recently, optimization of the transition from open-pit to underground operation has become an important challenge in mining engineering. Optimally, to model the transition problem on the basis of maximization of the profit from open-pit and underground mining, (0-1) integer programming has been used. In this method, block economic values of open-pit and underground methods should be imported to the transition model. A hypothetical example is presented in order to assess the model in detail.

Strategic Ca-bearing minerals like scheelite and fluorite are usually separated by flotation, yet the separation is quite difficult due to their similar surface Ca active sites. Compared with the conventional strong collector sodium oleate (NaOL), lead nitrate-benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA), complex collector shows a better selectivity for scheelite, yet its high cost hinders its wide application. Therefore, a novel collector (Pb-BHA-NaOL complex) was initially developed in this work to overcome the abovementioned dilemma. The flotation results of a single mineral showed that Pb-BHA-NaOL had a better selectivity for scheelite than Pb-BHA. Under the conditions of sequential assembly of Pb, BHA and NaOL at the molar ratio of 240:120:1 and pH 9.0, selective separation of scheelite from fluorite could be achieved without adding any depressants. In addition, for the same preferred scheelite recovery, Pb- BHA-NaOL could also save approximately 20% Pb and BHA compared with Pb-BHA. The analyses of the zeta potential measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that Pb-BHA-NaOL showed stronger adsorption on scheelite relative to fluorite. Meanwhile, Pb-BHA-NaOL showed more adsorption modes and higher utilisation of Pb and BHA on scheelite than Pb-BHA, which was due to the accelerator, NaOL. Inorganic acids such as sulphuric acid have found use together with certain reducing agents in leaching of copper-cobalt oxide ores. These reagents are not ideal due to the adverse effect the inorganic acids generally have on the environment and the high costs of the reducing agents. In this study a copper-cobalt oxide ore from the Central African Copperbelt was leached in two different environments; sulphuric acid in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide as a reducing agent and tartaric acid. The effects of acid concentration, reducing agent concentration, and temperature were independently determined for both leaching environments. The sulphuric acid concentration was varied between 0.4 M and 1.2 M and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide between 4.0 M and 6.5 M, while the tartaric acid concentration was varied between 0.15 M and 0.35 M. The temperature was varied between 20°C and 50°C. The results showed that the extraction of both copper and cobalt increased with sulphuric acid concentration, reaching a peak at approximately 0.8 M and then decreasing at higher acid concentrations. A similar increase and decrease in metal extraction was observed when the reducing agent was increased. In leaching with tartaric acid, the extraction of cobalt was much higher than that of copper, although extraction of both metals increased with acid concentration. Additions of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide were found to increase cobalt extraction in tartaric acid but had a minimal effect on copper. An increase in the solution temperature had a significant effect in the organic acid environment, with the effect on cobalt extraction being much more pronounced than on copper.

Deciding on plant-scale reagent dosage regimes and air rates is a topic of ongoing investigation and high importance. The current work explains some techniques that have proven useful in deciding on plant-scale flotation operating regimes. Specific focus has been placed on the reagents: frother and depressant, as well as some discussion around the control of air rate and froth depth. Air rate has been selected based on its effects on the froth phase. Froth velocity and froth height above the cell lip are the two variables measured and used to select the operating air rate. Pulp level is then adjusted to increase or decrease mass pull. A technique has been developed using the Anglo Platinum Bubble Sizer on an industrial flotation cell to determine the relationship between bubble size and frother concentration. This technique has been extended to measure the equivalent frother concentration or frothabilities of various streams on a rougher bank. A mass balance for frother was performed successfully, and this provided a better understanding of the way frother moved in the rougher bank. With this knowledge, more informed decisions can be made about frother addition required in subsequent flotation stages. For depressant, a new protocol for deciding on dosage rate has been developed. The depressant dosage should be based on the amount of fresh feed material reporting to a bank. Currently 400 g/t of fresh feed has been assumed a reasonable starting point with promising results. Improved froth stability and grades were observed. There is scope for more accurately defining the optimal dosage rate. Importantly, the combined effect of changing the chemistry and the hydrodynamics together has been demonstrated. A significant upward shift in the grade-recovery relationship for a cleaner bank was observed.

The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. In this study, the detachment behaviour of 314 μm diameter silica particles from a single 3 mm diameter bubble rotating in a confined cavity connected to a cross-flowing water channel was investigated. The liquid cross-flow generated a rotating flow inside the confined cavity, which was quantified using 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The fluctuating (x-y) velocity components inside the cavity for each cross-flow velocity, U, were then used to estimate the corresponding time/volume average turbulence intensity values, Ti. Turbulence intensity ranged from 9.3-16.2%. In the absence of a bubble, the rotating vortex within the cavity created a pressure field which decreased towards the centre of the vortex; wherein the lowest pressure zone was located at the centre of the cavity. The vorticity into the cavity was found to increase with increasing the turbulence intensity. A bubble, both without and with particles attached, was introduced into the cavity under different flow conditions and its motion was tracked using the shadowgraphy technique. Experimentally, it was found that the bubble-particle aggregate was trapped at the centre of the cavity (low-pressure region) following a spiral trajectory. An interface resolved 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the particle detachment conditions within the confined cavity. CFDpredicted vorticity in the absence of a bubble agreed well with experimental observation. The CFD analysis indicated that the vorticity inside the cavity was not significantly changed when a single bubble was introduced. On this basis, the computed vorticity was utilised in describing the force balance applied to the attached particle. Computationally, it was found that the critical turbulence intensity, beyond which the particle was detached from the bubble, was 14%. This value was consistent with the experimental observation of detachment at Ti at 15.7%, and above, but not at lower values. Quadrilátero Ferrífero is an important mineral province located in Minas Gerais state, responsible for a substantial amount of iron production in Brazil. Among the concentration methods for iron ore practised by the mining companies in this region, the most important is the reverse cationic flotation. Dolomite iron formations, with the presence of hematite, quartz and dolomite, occur in several areas of mining and, with the deepening of the deposits, this type of ore, with low iron content and more complex mineralogy occurs frequently. Carbonaceous minerals, mainly dolomite, present a technological challenge for the concentration of iron ore by flotation. In the present study, the concentration of iron ore with 6% of dolomite content was evaluated. Bench flotation trials indicated that conventional iron ore flotation is not selective to float dolomite, thus compromising the iron content in the final concentrate. Alternative flotation routes were evaluated, and a selective condition was reached to float both quartz and dolomite using the combination of the cationic collector Flotigam 16424 with an anionic collector Flotinor 16551. It was demonstrated that the flotation of dolomite was improved with the combined use of both collectors in the cleaner stage, and by a previous quartz flotation in the rougher stage. Zeta potential analysis indicated specific adsorption as the adsorption mechanism between Flotinor 16551 and dolomite, confirming the high selectivity observed in the bench flotation tests. Advances in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are transforming mining and mineral processing, and making them more algorithm intensive. The paradigm is shifting from one of detection and control to one of prediction and optimisation. To build up reliable prediction and optimisation models these steps should be passed: collect, aggregate, cleanse, and process large amounts of complex, structured, and unstructured data as a first stage. Next, the right tools must be used to extract meaningful features from the operational data for the build-up of a prediction model. A grinding circuit is one of the challenging areas in terms of determining its overall efficiency and the prediction of product quality. In a processing plant, some of the KPIs are typically unmeasurable or infrequently measured for real-time application, e.g. ore grindability and grind size. However, these variables are required to calculate the grinding circuit efficiency and to model the operation performance. In this paper, advanced analytic tools have been used to extract one selected KPI (cyclone overall P80 or final grind size) and its relationship with measured variables for an industrial dataset. The results illustrate that the performance of the grinding circuit can be predicted for real-time monitoring by means of measured data.
