The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. Since commissioning was completed, ramp up occurred over the following three months with downstream gold recoveries from cyanide leaching reaching over 98%.CITATION:Voigt, P, Hourn, M, Mallah, D and Turner, D, 2015. Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements at Thiess Bros Pty Ltd South Blackwater coal mine commenced in 1975.Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioncd in June 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world.The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stabilily of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

The devastating failure of Dam I at the Corrego do Feijao iron ore mine near Brumadinho in Brazil on 25th January 2019 left at least 270 people dead or missing. In the immediate aftermath of this event, many mining companies commenced reviews of their tailings and water storage facilities (T&WSFs), and Rio Tinto was no exception. Rio Tinto has an interest in over 250 T&WSFs across 47 sites in 13 countries as owner-operator, as managing JV partner, and through non-managed partnerships and other ownership arrangements; T&WSF experts from Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence visited the sites in order to complete Technical Risk Reviews of each facility. These reviews looked beyond the day-to-day operational aspects of T&WSF management, and the site’s compliance with local regulations and Rio Tinto’s internal D5 Standard – Management of tailings and water storage facilities, in order to provide a strategic, second line of assurance perspective. The reviews focused on design and construction; operational controls; risk control framework; and competencies and capabilities of personnel involved in the design, operation and closure of the facilities. Additional activities were carried out in parallel with these reviews, including the development of a consistent approach to dam break studies; the public disclosure of information on Rio Tinto’s tailings storage facilities and their management; and contribution to external programs such as the initiatives being co-ordinated by the International Committee on Mining and Metals. This paper provides an overview of the tailings and water storage assurance work undertaken by Rio Tinto’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence Tailings Validation Taskforce to date; work that will continue to improve governance and assurance for all of Rio Tinto’s T&WSF.

The formation and distribution of gold placers in active collisional mountain belts are directly related to the tectonic, topographic, climatic and erosional constraints prevailing on either side of the orogen at the time of placer formation. In the absence of pre-existing placer deposits, these factors combine to concentrate placer development on the side of the orogen facing the prevailing winds, where most of the erosion and uplift occurs. Drainage network changes and glaciation can significantly alter placer distribution with respect to source areas within the orogen. After collision stops, placer formation will proceed on both sides of the orogen as exhumation of the mountain belt ensues. Incorporation of pre-existing placers formed on ancient mountain belts into younger placers in subsequent orogens, may be recognised by anomalous placer distribution compared to the above model. Most of the relatively young giant placers such as those inNew Zealand, Chile, Bolivia and Columbia, exhibit these general patterns. Their character and mode of formation have important implications for the formation and distribution of much older placers, such as those in South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin.

Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

The gold province of Otago occupies an area of upwarped basement, the Otago Schist, comprising predominantly quartzofeldspathic and volcanogenic metasediments. This assemblage is the product of collisional tectonic deformation and associated metamorphism, mainly to lower greenschist facies, during the Rangitata Orogeny (200-100 Ma). Historically this region has produced 240 tonnes of gold, 4% (10 t.) of which was from the mining of Cretaceous goldquartz mineralised vein systems. Auriferous vein systems in the Otago Schist are mainly hosted within NW trending normal fault-fracture arrays, however NW trending reverse fault-hosted vein systems also occur. We propose that the Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary Otago Schist structure represents a regional anticlinorium containing flexural folds of at least two wavelengths. The anticlinorium structure has been quantified by determining variations in angular discordance between schistosity and the Otago Peneplain, a Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary erosion surface covering most of the Otago district. A structural model for the evolution of the post-collisional anticlinorium requires the cooling surficial zone (carapace) of a retrograding metamorphic belt to behave as an elastic lid. Erosion of topographic load on the carapace drove isostatic uplift, which was greatest in the tectonically thickened core of the orogen. In this way differential uplift produced flexural deformation in the elastic carapace, expressed as a large scale arching of the orogenic belt. Flexure created tangential longitudinal strains in the outer-arc, leading to extension and the formation of mineralised normal faults. These structures are separated by a neutral surface from shortening and associated mineralised reverse faults in the inner-arc. Our structural model predicts that the distribution of auriferous lodes should be localised about zones of maximum flexural curvature, where the tangential longitudinal strains are highest. As a result, NW-SE hinge regions separating schistosity dip domains in the Otago gold province may have new found significance as potential exploration targets.

From time to time lead, which is normally considered to be a soft ductile metal, fails by cracking. The cracks which form appear to be of two distinct types-(a) those which follow a zig-zag course around the boundaries of crystals and (b) those which follow a more direct path, frequently two systems of cracks appearing at right angles.The former appear definitely to be associated primarily with the properties of the crystal boundaries, whilst the latter appear rather to be determined by the system of stresses applied. In both cases the lead appears to be a brittle rather than a ductile metal, for the failure occurs without the large amount of deformation usually associated with the tensile breaking of lead. The latter is, however, a function of time and when lead is deformed by long applications of stress, the metal appears to- be less ductile than when the stress is applied suddenly. Thus, if a given test piece of commercial lead is broken by a stress of 1100 lb. per sq. in. in several hours, it may extend 40 to 50%before failing, whereas when broken by a stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. acting for 12 months or more it willshow an extension of only 15 to 25 %. With lower stresses still, failure would take much longer and undoubtedly lower extensions would be obtained.As the stress is lowered it is found that the marked local contraction characteristic of ductile metals becomes less noticeable, and failure, instead of being by extension of *Lecture delivered to the First 'Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 21st August, 1935.

New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.

The petrology and age of mid Cretaceous to Palaeogene marine volcanics may provide important clues to the palaeogeography of the period, particularly for tectonic elements and events outboard of the Papuan Basin. This initial survey of known marine volcanics of this age reveals a paucity of reliable data on isotopic ages, geochemistry and syngenetic mineralisation on virtually all units. Existing data allows a tentative subdivision of known marine volcanics into either MORB-like early Palaeogene rifts/ marginal basins, early Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks overlying ?Late Cretaceous and Palaeogene fore-arc/marginal basin crust, late Palaeogene ensimatic arc rocks, and mid to Late Cretaceous ensialic rift rocks. Due to lack of data, some units are difficult to classify into these categories.

A Sun SPARCstation based computer network is utilised to store and process mining data at the Macraes Gold Mine. Techbase and Medsystem software running on the SunOS unix platform is used to generate all data plans, sections and other design data required on a daily basis to run the mining operation. The Macraes site is regarded as a fully integrated site where all geological, grade control, exploration, orebody modelling, resource estimation, pit optimisation and mine design is undertaken on site by MacraesÆ professional staff. The methodologies employed are regarded as æstate-of-the-artÆ where computerisation allows the rapid and efficient evaluation of large quantities of mining data by a handful of professional personnel. Ore reserves are estimated using an indicator kriging method and roving cone pit optimisation, a complex process that would not have been achievable in pre-computing days.

The rotary drilling of rocks is widespread technology in mining and in tunnelling. The paper describes the results of research by aim to find relationships between optimal drilling and sound signal of drilling machine. The optimisation criterion has been formulated as the minimisation of specific energy with maximal effective speed of drilling in process of the rock disintegration. The research in this field has been made on experimental drilling stand. Our monitoring system has measured following variables: the pressing force of core drill, the revolutions of drilling head, the length of drilling, the time, the power, and the acoustic signals. For measurement of acoustic signals have been used very sensitively sound meter MEDIATOR 2238. From this measurements have been processed acoustic spectrums. Then we are found relationships between optimal control of drilling and composition of acoustic spectrum. On base of experimental results, we can formulate the optimal control following: æTo achieve the minimum difference between the equivalent sound level at the load and idle modes only at the representative frequency (f = 1000 Hz)Æ. The representative frequency dependences on type of the rock New method based on these relationships enables the optimal control of drilling machine by using measured acoustic signals only.
