A paper presenting an overview of legislative and best practice approaches to the management of OHS&E and business risk for Australian tunnelling operations. Best practice can be achieved in Australian tunnelling through ærisk awarenessÆ by decision-makers and line personnel. This will identify problems before they occur and lead to implementing controls appropriate to avoiding loss throughout the life cycle of the underground opening. The author draws on legislative approaches from all Australian states together with practical experience from risk management and risk engineering work from six recent tunnelling projects. This describes a process that:commences with concept risk assessment,involves quantification of major hazards,conducts assessments of operating risks, andleads to implementation of an integrated management system that keeps construction activities connected with the controls identified in the design and planning phases and minimises the losses sustained as a result. Key points addressed include:where the industry is going with respect to risk û methods and considerations,how tunnelling risks are perceived by the industry and legislation,how tunnel constructors and owners can minimise exposure by using proper risk engineering ætoolsÆ, andreflections on best practice methods for transferring knowledge from designers to contractors/operators.

Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

Few, if any, reliable thermodynamic data are available for the activity of tin oxide in slags. In this work, the activity of the oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags has been measured at 1573 K using the equilibrium Sn (alloy) + Y2O2-SnO (slag).Slag and a Ag-Sn alloy were sealed in a zirconium oxide crucible to prevent the escape of volatile tin oxide, and the oxygen pressure at equilibrium measured in situ using the zirconium oxide as a solid electrolyte. Activity of tin was calculated from known data for the Ag-Sn system and activity of tin oxide calculated from free energy data. The results have been extrapolated to predict the industrially important distribution of tin and iron between Fe-Sn alloy and iron silicate based slags.

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUMAnimal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

The quality of iron ore fines have been deteriorating, which has affected sinter quality and productivity adversely. New pretreatment and sintering technologies are therefore required to tackle the gradual change in the quality of iron ore fines. In the sintering process, iron ore fines are first granulated with fluxes such as limestone and coke breeze, and are then loaded and fired in a sinter machine. Sinter productivity and quality are heavily influenced by the reactions occurring in the sintering bed. Hence fundamental understanding of these high temperature properties of ores is urgently needed.Formation of initial sinter melt, penetration and assimilation of nucleus particles by the initial melt, and consolidation and final solidification of final sinter melt are believed to be the key sintering reactions. The assimilation and penetration phenomena have been studied separately in the literature with model particles and diffusion couples and are therefore difficult to relate to sinter quality. In addition, the effect of ore mineralogy has not been studied in detail.In this study, tablets consisting of coarse particles from various iron ore fines as nucleus particles and chemical reagents as adhering fines were made and fired under various sintering conditions to investigate the penetration and assimilation behaviour simultaneously. The degree of assimilation, pore structure, compressive strength of the resultant analogue sinters were evaluated and the relationship between sinter strength and ore characteristics was further discussed. The nucleus particles from Ores A and B were found to be more porous and assimilated more readily with sinter melt, resulting in a viscous melt and a macro-porous sinter structure. The nucleus particles from Ores C and D on the other hand, assimilated less readily with sinter melt, resulting in a fluid melt and a denser sinter structure. This is consistent with the results reported in the literature, suggesting that the present evaluation method can be utilised for studying sintering reactions and predicting sinter quality.CITATION:Higuchi, T and Lu, L, 2017. To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. Coupling between deformation processes and rock permeability is a major factor influencing the architecture of fluid migration and the localisation of ore deposition in several types of hydrothermal ore systems in middle to upper crustal regimes. Permeability in many hydrothermal systems is controlled by a dynamic competition between deformation-induced porosity-creation processes and porosity-destruction processes. Localisation of deformation within faults, fractures and shear zones leads to flow localisation, with large-scale flow systems forming when active faults and shear zones link to create percolation networks. Numerical modelling techniques are used to explore the growth of fracture networks and evolution of network connectivity during progressive deformation. Initial results indicate that networks reach a percolation threshold at very low strains. Near the percolation threshold, flow is localised along a small proportion of the total fracture population and favours localised ore deposition. At higher strains, flow is distributed more widely throughout the fracture population and may provide reduced potential for production of high-grade deposits. The distribution of mesothermal gold deposits along a small subset of the total population of co-active faults and shear zones in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia indicates that some hydrothermal systems maintain themselves near the percolation threshold for a substantial part of the lifetime of the system. Fluid-driven growth of fault/fracture/shear networks may lead them to self-organise near the percolation threshold.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

The Round Hill gold-scheelite deposit is located three kilometres from Macraes Flat and approximately 60 kilometres due north of Dunedin, New Zealand. A mining feasibility study is currently being undertaken on the deposit by BHP Minerals (New Zealand) Limited, who are the managers and operators of a Joint Venture with Home Reef Mining Limited. BHP has a 70 per cent equity in the project area.

During an eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

This paper reviews them and comments on the potential for further discoveries. Potential markets for these unusual industrial minerals are discussed.

The district specially referred to in this paper comprises the very gently sloping country extending from the western shores of Port Phillip from the mouth of the Yarra to Footscray along the Bacchus Marsh railway to near that town thence in a southerly direction to the Little River, and along that river to the coast, 1 as may be seen on the accompanying map. Almost the whole of this area is covered by volcanic rocks, consisting of pumerous sheets of basalt, which have been poured out of various volcanic hills in the districts, such as Mts. Atkinson and Cotteril, near Melton; Mt. Maryand Bald Hill, 12 and 16 miles respectively N.W. of Werribee; and vents in different parts of the parishes of Tarneit, Mouyong, Mooradoranook, Pyweitjorrk, and Derrimut. These volcanoes were in an active state of eruption during a late period of the earth's historyprobably the late Pliocenll, or still younger Pleistocene.Occupying a narrow strip of country, for most of the distance along the coast from Williamstown to past the mouth of the Little River, there occur deposits of still younger age, belonging to the Recent period. These lie on the basalt, and extend for distances varying from a few chains to more than a mile back from the beach. They comprise superficial deposits of blown sand, and raised beaches, composed of marine sands...

Since the first occupation of New Zealand in 800 - 900 AD, various useful minerals, rocks, and energy resources have been identified and extracted. The Maori prized greenstone for ornaments, tools, and weapons, used argillite and obsidian for tools, and decorated their carvings and bodies with colours made from clays, limonite, and vivianite. They were aware of coal (waro), but are not known to have used it for fuel. Before 1840, visiting whalers used coal from Shag Point to heat their trypots. Mining activities got underway in the 1840s, with the finding of manganese oxide deposits in the Bay of Islands, Kawau Island, Waiheke+ Island, and Taieri Mouth. Secondary copper ore was mined on Kawau Island (1846 - 1869), and native sulphur was exported from White Island to Europe. The discovery of gold at Coromandel in 1852 and a few years later in Northwest Nelson and Otago opened the way to gold rushes in these areas and subsequently in Marlborough and Westland. Mining of alluvial gold evolved through sluicing to the invention of gold dredges; first (1863) was the simple spoon design, but later (1881) large steam-powered bucket-ladder machines weighing around 3800 tonnes were built. Most of the gold dredges had gone by the early 1960s, following a revival in the 1930s, but one large dredge operates today on the Grey River. Other mining events included: underground mining of coal from 1849 and underground mining of lode gold from 1863 in the Coromandel, Reefton, and Otago fields. Most outcropping coal deposits had been discovered by 1870. Building stones were used by the early settlers for construction of houses, churches, banks, public buildings, and some universities from 1836. Aggregate for roads, railway ballast, and concrete, and limestone for cement and fertiliser, and clays for bricks and china have been quarried for many years.
