IT was just five minutes past midnight, on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938, that Mrs. Cosgrove and I sailed from New York City. Our trip was to completely circle the globe, to cover over 40,000 miles and stop at thirty ports-from New York to Trinidad, to South America, via South Africa to the Orient, to India, to the Malay States, to Indo-China, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and across the Pacific home via Honolulu. It is not my intention to make this a complete, technical study of coal or coal mining in the various countries that .we visited but more to outline the general in- formation that the mining engineer and coal operator would absorb in his travels. Coal is the universal fuel and is in use wherever there is commerce and industry. Even on our ship, which, like practically all ocean liners was an oil-burner, a considerable quantity of coal was used for cooking.

THE Tri-State district, named from its situation in three States, lies in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the adjacent part of Missouri east of the common corner of the above States. Production in the past eighty years has come from scattered mines within an area of some 35 miles east and west, by 25 miles north and south, although the actual area of the mined ground is but a small fraction of this territory. The land is leased from the individual land-owners, and the size of the tracts varies from 4.0 to 200 acres, the smaller sized tracts predominating. The leases usually call for a royalty of 7% to 15 per cent of the gross receipts of the concentrates, continuous operation during the life of the lease and specifically set out that no ores can be brought in from a foreign lease for custom milling nor can any ore be removed from the lease for milling. The ownership of the tailings remains with the land-owner.

FOR nearly 100 years wire rope has been fabricated in much the same way. To the great majority of mine superintendents wire rope is just wire rope, little or no semblance of individuality or identifying characteristics. Such an impression was fairly justified until three or four years ago when a practical means was found of performing or preshaping the wires and strands. This discovery permitted a revolutionary change in wire rope manufacture. Instead of merely twisting a number of wires into a strand, then twisting several strands into a complete rope (which twisting would naturally result in great internal strain, thus reducing the resiliency and over-all efficiency of the completed rope), the preformed wires and strands were laid in place without force or twisting. The obvious result was a rope more nearly approximating mechanical perfection. The applied loads are more evenly distributed throughout the component wires and strands, thus reducing unbalanced wire stresses. This results in a higher safety factor. The fact that preformed rope will not unravel when untied at the ends proves the absence of a torsional stress that exists in ordinary rope. A greater useful allowable stress in the wires is therefore possible in actual operating service.

Compression tests were run in the temperature range of 700° to 900°C ox 0' phase NiAl intermetal-lic alloys of several grain sizes. At these temperatures the minimum strengths were observed at the stoichiometric composition. While significant increases in strength occurved in both the low-nickel (vacancy) and high-nickel (substitutional) regions, the highest strengths were found in the high-nickel region. During deformation serrated flow was sometimes observed in the low-nickel alloys. After deformation transgranular cvacking and deformation striations were observed in all compositions tested. AS part of a general investigation of the properties of NiAl inter metallic compounds, a preliminary study of the role of point defects upon plasticity was made by high-temperature compression tests on ß' NiAl specimens of several grain sizes and compositions. ß' NiAl is an intermetallic compound having a CsCl structure and a rather wide range of composition from A1-45 at. pct to 60 at. pct Ni.1 According to Bradley and Taylor2 and to cooper,' it possesses a defect lattice in which departures from stoichiometry in the direction of decreased nickel content lead to the presence of vacant nickel sites (although Cooper's work indicates that a small amount of substitution also occurs) whereas departures on the high-nickel side lead to substitution of nickel on aluminum sites. NiAl forms congru-ently from the melt at approximately 1650°C,1 and thus has a higher melting point than either of its component elements. Up to this time, although this and other high-melting intermetallic compounds have been suggested for elevated-temperature usage,4 only the hardness4 and a few tensile-strength measurements5 have been reported for NiAl at high temperatures. In the present investigation the effects of composition upon the compressive-strength properties in a range of 700° to 900°C have been measured for NiAl of several grain sizes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The alloys were made as described elsewhere6 from an A1-46.8 at. pct Ni master alloy furnished by the International Nickel Co. with additions of high-purity nickel and aluminum. The charges were vacuum-induction-melted in A12O3 crucibles with small amounts of helium added to the atmosphere to suppress vaporization. They were cooled slowly from the melting temperature to achieve uniform grain size. In order to refine the as-grown grain size a special rolling technique was developed. Alloys were packed into 0.10-in. wall-type 302 stainless-steel tubes which were partially filled with magnesium oxide to prevent bonding between the alloy and the steel jacket. The ends of the tubes were closed by hot forging, and the packets were then hot-rolled. The alloys with greater than 50 at. pct Ni were rolled at 1100°C, but it was found necessary to increase the temperature to 1350° C before alloys with less than 50 at. pct Ni would roll without cracking. With these temperatures, reductions as high as 48 pct were achieved in a single pass. The rolled alloys will hereafter be referred to as "fine grained" whereas the as-grown material will be designated "coarse-grained''. The compression specimens were made by cutting square cross-sectional pieces, approximately 3/16 by 3/16 by 1/2 in., with a water-cooled diamond cut-off wheel from the as-grown or the rolled alloys. Specimens were ground to their final dimensions by polishing through 3/0 grit silicon carbide papers. The final shape was a rectangular parallelepiped of square cross section having a height-to-width ratio of 3:1. Compression testing was carried out in a compression rig of our own design mounted on an In-stron Floor Model. The specimen chamber could be heated to 1000°C and was controlled within ±2°C. The compression rig was enclosed within a bell jar and was maintained at a 50 µ of mercury vacuum throughout the duration of the test. The test cham -ber was heated from room to test temperature within 15 min. Specimens were then held at the test temperature 30 min prior to testing. Previous experiments indicated that no grain growth would occur within this time. An Instron Variable Crosshead speed unit was used to adjust for small variations in specimen lengths in order to have a constant initial strain rate, €, for all specimens of a group. For the fine-grained specimens the strain rate was changed rapidly at constant temperature by a factor of 10 with the speed lever on the Instron. For a given € the compression data was analyzed in terms of true plastic strain (E) and true compressive stress (0).

On one occasion when it seemed desirable to reveal under the microscope not only the metallic structure of an alloy, but certain small non-metallic inclusions that are ordinarily obliterated by etching, it was discovered that, by partly eclipsing the illuminating pencil of light rays, the residual light was thrown on the object from one side and the structure was brought out in relief. At the same time, the non-metallic inclusions were retained in clear view. In this first demonstration of lighting obliquely through the objective a card was thrust part way into the light beam between the arc iris and the light filter; the shadow of the card on the filter served to locate its position. Next several stiff-paper disks of various diameters were mounted on flexible wires; some plasticine on the other end of the wires made it easy to adjust and maintain a disk at any desired position in the light beam. To facilitate manipulation, an assortment of disks was mounted on a wheel, as shown in Fig. 1. The purpose of partly eclipsing the light beam was discussed in an earlier paper.' There it was pointed out that the usual methods of illuminating opaque objects for microscopic examination lend an unnatural appearance to the view, while the new method, which has been termed conical illumination, revels the true relationship of constituents by simulating natural lighting. In nature, all objects are lighted diffusely, or by light predominating from one direction, or by a combination of diffuse and directed light. Under these conditions, objects appear to have three dimensions—they possess relief. The kind of illumination known to metallographists as vertical or axial results in an unnatural appearance, as a large proportion of the illuminating rays are parallel to the line connecting the eye with the object, a condition almost never met in nature. In 1969 "Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne" produced 221,000 tons zinc ingots and 22,000 tons zinc dust, thus rating highest on the world's zinc producer list. The Company's plant at Balen, Belgium, with an output of 135,000 tons electrolytic zinc is the most important one of this group; it is an integrated metallurgical zinc and lead unit with recovery of most by-products. The present paper describes the zinc production facilities. The roasting section includes four fluid bed roasters (total concentrates charged: 740 tpd) and two sulfuric acid having a corresponding capacity. Calcine is leached in a fully automated plant by a two-step continuous process. Leaching residues, mixed with lead furnace slag, are treated in a shaft furnace. The recovered zinc fume is leached separately. In the near future, the leaching residues are to be treated by a wet process, developed in the Company's own laboratories. Purification of solutions is accomplished in two steps: antimony and zinc dust are added in the first one, only zinc dust in the second one for removal of cadmium. Electrolysis cells are partly of a conventional type. A new type of cell configuration was put onstream in October, 1969, planned output 60,000 tpy. Main features of the new cell rooms are the fully automatic pulling, stripping and replacing of the jumbo-size cathodes (immersed area 2.6 m2). Zinc cathodes are remelted in induction furnaces followed by in-line automatic casting and stacking machines.

Important economic planning by industries, companies, financial firms and governments is predicated on estimates of future growth potential. Prior to the passage of the Taconite Amendment by the people of the State in November 1964, various admittedly conservative forecasts were made of the future of Minnesota's iron ore industry. Since that date, 3 new taconite plants are under construction, 2 are being expanded, one has just gone "on stream," and a seventh is in the design stage. These plants have a total capacity of about 35 million tons of pellets annually. The pessimism of 1964 today is being replaced by unbounded optimism. In the light of such recent developments, it becomes essential to update forecasts related to production, employment and capital investments. New projections show 50 to 58 million tons of pellet production from Minnesota by 1975. This tonnage, together with some 6 to 8 million of natural ores, should provide an annual full-time employment of 15,000 by the mining companies, plus 700 in related railroad and power producing activities and 1000 in plant construction. Total capital investment in new plants should reach $1.5 billion by 1975 and $2 billion by 1990. These current estimates indicate that the conservative goals as set in 1964 for the year 1990 should actually be achieved by 1975 or 1980. BACKGROUND Various forecasts1,2,3 have been made of the future consumption and production of iron ores within the United States. The most recent of these is by Harrison,1 delivered at the American Mining Congress meeting in Las Vegas in October. His estimates reflect the latest iron ore developments on a world wide front as well as the accelerating trend toward pellets. Minnesota's Natural Resources council prepared a detailed report in 1964 outlining the various factors that affect the future of Minnesota's iron ore industry. The melting points of mixtures of titanium dioxide and other titanates have been reported to a limited extent as binary systems and some results have been reported in conjunction with silicon dioxide. The limited data indicated that a low melting zone might exist in a ternary or quarternary system of CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3, since the eutectics reported in the binary systems of MgO.TiO2-TiO2, Al2O3TiO2-TiO2 and CaO.TiO2-TiO2 were of about equivalent composition of TiO2. The importance of a low melting region with a high titanium oxide value in the developing of high titanium slags is fully appreciated by metallurgists. A comprehensive study was undertaken to establish basic information on low melting titanate mixtures. Compounds in the System CaO-MgO-TiO2 -Al2O3 Preparation of the titanates of CaO, MgO and Al2O3 confirmed reported data that the following compounds could be formed under oxidizing conditions in solid state reactions: CaO.TiO2, 2MgO.TiO2, MgO.TiO2, MgO-2TiO2 and Al2O3.TiO2. Under oxidizing conditions it was not possible to react MgO with TiO2 in mol ratios higher than 1:2 without having unreacted TiO2 in the product, nor was it possible to form calcium or aluminum titanates with a higher mol ratio of CaO and A12O3 to TiO2 than 1:1. By fusing mixtures of Al2O3-TiO2 and MgO-2TiO2 together a series of solid solution products were obtained, which showed an MgO-2TiO2 X ray diffraction pattern shifted to smaller inter-planar spacings. Range of Investigation Data in the literature1 indicated that these titanates had melting points which ranged from 1645 to 1860°C. Since the purpose of the study was primarily to provide useful data for smelting titaniferous ores, the work was restricted to the zone of the system which would include the crystalline phases present in the slags. The explored limits were bounded by CaO.-TiO2-MgO.TiO2-TiO2in the base plane. The system was extended to a fourth component Al2O3-TiO2 since many titaniferous ores contain appreciable amounts of A12O3. In the quarternary system CaO-TiO2-MgOTiO2-TiO2-Al2O3TiO2, a tetrahedron was used to represent graphically the components, with one component at each point of the tetrahedron. In the base plane, mixtures were pre- pared to represent fairly uniform changes of composition over the desired range expressed on a mol percent basis. Al2O3-TiO2 was brought into the system in increments of 10 mol pct up to 40 pct. Mixtures were then made up for each of the Al2O3-TiO2 planes. The ranges employed were then represented by five planes cutting the tetrahedron at 10 mol pct Al2O3-TiO2 intervals. Choice of Equipment Although it was necessary for all smelting work to be done in a strongly reducing atmosphere, it was decided that all melting point determinations should be done under oxidizing conditions. This decision was prompted by the fact that TiO2 reduced to lower oxides in a reducing atmosphere with consequent changes in melting points. The use of a micropyrometer and a platinum strip furnace for work of this type is adequately described in the literature.2 With modifications, equipment was selected which provided a fairly rapid method of determining melting points of refractory oxides. The final assembly, which was used, consisted of a platinum strip furnace and a Leeds and Northrup disappearing filament optical pyrometer attached to a special telescope which magnified the sample about 20 diam. The furnace assembly consisted of a platinum strip 0.005 X 0.3 X 2.2 in. mounted on brass posts on a refractory base. This was enclosed in a black steel shell which had a 2-in. opening at the top for purposes of sighting the telescope. The platinum strip was in series with two 0.04 ohm nichrome resistors connected to the secondary of a 2 kw transformer which supplied 17 volts. The current to the primary was varied

THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus. THE first session of the Institute was held on Tuesday evening, September 16th, in the William Molson Hall, of McGill University, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements, in the chair. Dr. Hunt introduced Monsieur S. Rivard, Mayor of Montreal, who spoke as follows : GENTLEMEN: We welcome you with pleasure to our city, and we are proud to find that you have deemed it worthy of your visit. I understand that your association was founded in 1871 with some thirty courageous members, and that so valuable has it been esteemed, and so attractive was it found, that nearly one thousand have now enrolled their names as members and associates. But we must regard your profession as dating back to the stone age and mingling therewith ; how remote that is none of us can tell. Much of civilization is due to the discovery of metals, and the magnitude of our works to their widespread abundance. If you have not accomplished what the alchemists aimed at, which was to turn the ruder materials into gold, you manage, by your subtle skill, to turn stones into gold value. Europe has long since been-dug into and perforated with shafts and galleries in search of metals, and great wealth, and power, and comfort have arisen there-from ; but by an increase of knowledge, and more than European enterprise and energy, America is following rapidly in the race, and by means of natural advantages of a geological character has out-stripped the Old World. We are pleased to see you, gentlemen, as an evidence of the unity of this continent. Maps may have various delineations, but the veins and arteries of commerce and the nerves of science knit all together into one social organism with the same vital functions. THIS necessarily brief sketch will attempt to summarize the high lights of perhaps the best meeting so far held by the Iron and Steel Division. All sessions were well attended and the discussion was vigorous and of a high order. The technical sessions opened. on Tuesday morning. "Precipitation Hardening of Copper Steels" was discussed by Cyril S. Smith and Earl W. Palmer, and dealt with steel with a 1 per cent copper content. Discussion brought out that there were no fabricating difficulties, but that the surface might be somewhat checked due to intergranular penetration of copper which could be easily taken care of. Probable advantages of steels of this type for high temperatures were pointed out. "An Improved Nickel-chromium Hardened Chilled Cast Iron," by J. S. Vanick, described a wear-resistant cast iron and evoked a lively discussion.

INTRODUCTION Utilization from the Point of View of the Preparation Engineer The primary interest of the coal preparation engineer is in process design, operation, and maintenance to produce an acceptable product that can be sold at the greatest possible profit. Because of emphasis upon these interests, attention to other potential values of coal is sometimes neglected. The intent of this chapter is to alert the preparation engineer to the utilization possibilities of the product as well as the tributary coal flow moving through a modern coal preparation plant. The basis for any unrealized potential derives directly from the coal seam itself. Most coal seams consist of coal bands and benches sandwiched together in layers that differ visually from each other in physical structure and luster. Randomly selected physical and chemical ranges determined from layers of coal in a single seam can easily differ by as much as 30 Hardgrove grindability indices, 0.30 of a specific gravity point, 20 percentage points of ash, 6 percentage points of dry volatile matter, and 10 percentage points of total su1fur.l Similar wide variations exist for calorific value, seam moisture content, and, undoubtedly, for any other conceivable coal test parameter that might be used for comparative purposes. These observations all point to the long-established fact that coal is not homogeneous, as conventional analytical methods might tend to indicate, but is instead a highly heterogeneous substance.

COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS A company operating in a foreign country assumes all the risks that it would at home. However, beyond these, it assumes risks that arise from the unique political economic, financial conditions of the foreign country which it operates. These risks are known as "country risks". The importance of these risks has grown appreciably in the recent past (particularly in the aftermath of Iran's revolution in the late 1970s and Mexico's debt rescheduling of 1982-83), and as a result, country risk analysis has become an increasingly useful management tool. Country risk analysis seeks to assess the probability that countries will service their aggregate foreign liabilities on time, as well as the probability that country conditions could inhibit the debt service capability of private sector debtors. This involves assessment of both the ability and the willingness of countries to meet their external liabilities in a timely fashion. "Ability" is linked economic and financial variables: principally, a country's economic structure, foreign exchange generating capacity and debt service burden. On the other hand, "willingness" is tied to political factors: mainly the economic/financial orientation of government policy and the stability of economic decision making. Ability: Economic, Financial Conditions and Prospects Judgement of a country's ability to meet foreign financial obligations begins with a detailed study of a country's external balance sheet which compares the country's foreign liabilities and assets. Table 1 below presents country balance sheets for Mexico, Korea and Indonesia. On the other hand, the relationship between Korea's external liabilities and assets ($50.5 billion and $7 billion, respectively), is more favorable and helps explain why Korea has been able to meet debt service payments and maintain its access to the international capital markets. Indonesia has even a more favorable relationship between its foreign assets and liabilities, $31 billion and $9 billion, respectively, and its debt is mostly lower interest rate, non-bank debt, making for a less onerous debt service burden. FOR the first time other than on occasion of war the people of the United States are experiencing full-scale participation in world affairs. Public concern has seldom been so involved with conditions and events beyond our own continental limits. Our interest is not wholly of recent origin. Over the years the activity of the United States as a world power and an important trading nation brought about the widening of our political interests and the progressive interrelation of our economy with that of the rest of the world. Some may see in our present phase of world-wide activity the natural consequence of our continued growth. Such observers must also be aware that within recent years our importance in world affairs has been considerably increased. For within the space of an extremely short period events have occurred that have literally jet-propelled the United States into the role of a leading participant in the conduct of world affairs. Little of the choice of this role was left to us. The decline of power in western Europe, the ascendancy between the Elbe and the Pacific shore of an obviously antagonistic force, our earnest endeavor to secure international control of atomic energy, the necessity of providing relief and rehabilitation to war-ravaged areas, and the police work that must be done in occupied territories are problems which have risen in great measure without our help-but they cannot be solved without it.

THE demand for improved materials for high-temperature service has increased during the last few years. Iron,- nickel,- and cobalt-base alloys have been investigated extensively and many alloys with outs'tanding high-temperature strength have been developed. Considerable research has been directed toward improved methods of processing these alloys. The vacuum furnace as a tool for the purification and improved control of high-temperature alloys has been studied extensively and production units are in operation. The research covered by this paper studied the effects of casting in air, vacuum, or argon upon the elevated-temperature properties of two nickel- and two cobalt-base alloys. The alloys investigated were Stellite 31, He 1049, Udimet 500, and Guy Alloy. MELTING AND CASTING PROCEDURES Two heats of each of the four alloys under investigation were melted and investment cast under the following conditions: 1) Stellite 31 was melted and investment cast in air and in vacuum, with an argon atmosphere for pouring. 2) He 1049 was melted and investment cast in air and in vacuum, with an argon atmosphere for pouring. 3) Udimet 500 was melted and investment cast in vacuum with and without additions of zirconium and boron. 4) Guy Alloy was melted and investment cast in vacuum and in argon. The heats were all melted in induction furnaces equipped with preformed magnesia crucibles of 50-lb capacity. The air-melting furnace was powered by a spark-gap converter of 40 kw capacity. The vacuum-melting furnace was powered by a motor-generator set of 100 kw capacity. The argon heat of Guy alloy was melted in the vacuum melting furnace under an argon atmosphere. Virgin materials were used for preparing all heats except the air heats of Stellite 31 and He 1049. The charge for the air heat of Stellite 31 was a commercial blend of shot. The charge for the air heat of He 1049 was Stellite 6 shot plus those virgin materials necessary to give the desired composition. All of the materials used were of the same grade used com-

Resistance sintering under pressure is a method of hot pressing in which a powder compact is subjected to pressure and simultaneously heated by passing a low voltage high amperage current through it. Equipment for this process is described. Its basic characteristics such as resistance requirements for powders and compacts, temperature distribution in compacts, and gas reactions during resistance sintering are discussed. Examples of the sintering process in compacts made of a single metal or an alloy powder and in compacts made of mixtures of powders are presented. Potential commercial applications of the process are evaluated. THE usual sequence of operations in commercial powder metallurgy is to compact metal powders in a die at room temperature and sinter the compact subsequently without applying pressure while the compact is in the sintering furnaces. In hot pressing, on the other hand, the compacting and the sintering are combined. The loose powder, or in many cases a cold formed compact, is inserted into the die which is held at the hot pressing temperature, the compact is left in the die until it attains its temperature, and then pressure is applied and maintained for a given length of time. The die may be heated by surrounding it with a suitable furnace, by high frequency induction heating, or by passing current through the die. In hot pressing, compacts of high density and good mechanical properties can be produced in a relatively short time. One of the principal difficulties in hot pressing is the lack of suitable die materials which will have adequate strength at the hot pressing temperature. This difficulty can be overcome at least partially by heating only the material to be hot pressed without heating the die directly. This can be done by passing a low voltage high amperage current through the material and simultaneously subjecting it to pressure. Either loose powders or compacts can be hot pressed by this method in which the desired temperature is produced by the power dissipated in the metal powder. This method of hot pressing has been termed "electrical resistance sintering under pressure." The most significant differences between this operation and conventional hot pressing are: 1—The sintering times are very short, usually a fraction of a second and at most a few seconds. 2—The powder and die are initially cold. 3—Heat is generated within the powder itself and not conducted in from the die. 4— The pressure used is high. 5—Cooling following sintering is rapid, amounting to a quench. Resistance sintering of metal powders under pressure has been suggested repeatedly. In 1933, G. F. Taylor' proposed an apparatus which consisted of an insulating tube made of glass, or a ceramic filled with the powder to be pressed, and plungers above and below the powder. The powder was to be heated by passing an electric current through it and pressure was then applied. The apparatus was intended principally for hot pressing cemented carbides. Although the principle of resistance sintering under pressure is clearly shown in this patent, few details are given. A sintering period of a second or a fraction of a second, which is terminated by the operation of an inertia switch, is mentioned but no values for current density are mentioned. Low pressures, such as atmospheric pressure or a somewhat higher pressure exerted through a lever, are suggested. W. D. Jones' discussed electrical resistance sintering under pressure and proposed using resistance welding apparatus for this purpose. In a patent issued in 1944, G. D. Cremera described a method of electrical resistance sintering under pressure using resistance welding apparatus which was to be applied mostly to nonferrous metals such as copper, brass, bronze, and aluminum. Current densities of 400,000 amp per sq in., sintering times of 1 and 2 cycles of 60 cycle current, and pressures of 5 to 10 tsi are proposed. Cremer suggested using an

THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

It was found that Al-A13Ni could be readily cold rolled perpendicular to but not parallel to the whiskers. Reductions of more than 98 pct were achieved without cracking by rolling perpendicular to the whiskers, whereas extensive edge cracking was noted after only 15 pct reduction when rolling parallel to the whiskers. The longitudinal and transverse tensile strengths were nearly doubled, and the longitudinal yield strength more than tripled by cold rolling 50 pct in a direction perpendicular to the whiskers. The whiskers exhibited some waviness (elastic bending) as a result of cold rolling, but at very high reductions (greater than 75 pct) whisker fracture and misalignment became significant. A fine dislocation substructure in the matrix consisting of cells attached to the whiskers was pro -duced by cold rolling. Most of- the substructure was readily removed by a 1-hr anneal at 500°C. Cold rolling was found to substantially reduce the thermal stability of the microstructure at 610°C but did not affect the stability at 500°C. FIBER and whisker reinforced composite materials promise significant improvements in properties over conventional materials. Before they find wide use, however, it will be necessary to understand the response of these highly anisotropic materials to common metalworking processes. Most of the nonmetal-lic fiber reinforced materials have very low elongations (a few pct or less) in the direction of fiber alignment. Thus, metalworking techniques such as rolling and forging would not be as broadly applicable to these materials. This investigation was initiated to determine how a composite system consisting of Al3Ni whisker reinforced aluminum responded to rolling, what changes in the microstructure occurred, and the effect of deformation on the mechanical properties. The composite material studied was produced by unidirectional solidification of the A1-Al3Ni eutectic alloy'-7 and consisted of 10 pct by volume of aligned whiskers of Alai in a matrix of aluminum. It should be pointed out that this system is not representative of all composite materials, and the results will therefore not be universally applicable. The A1-Al3Ni system is characterized by: 1) A strong fiber-matrix interfacial bond 2) A ductile matrix 3) A sufficiently low fiber content to allow significant plastic flow between fibers 4) Strong, completely elastic whiskers (tensile strength 400,000 psi, elastic modulus = 20 X 106 psi.1 These factors allow the material to be readily rolled perpendicular to the fibers. If the fiber-matrix bond were not strong, such a weak interface could fail during rolling. A measure of the ability of a composite to be rolled in the transverse direction can be obtained from noting the transverse tensile behavior. In the case of Al-Al3Ni,2 there is considerable ductility (15 to 30 pct). In the case of boron filament reinforced aluminum, for example, the transverse elongation is less than 1 pct,8 and the material could probably not be cold rolled as readily in that direction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 3-in. diam ingots of A1-A13Ni eutectic were unidi-rectionally solidified in graphite crucibles. The starting materials consisted of 99.99+ pct pure nickel and aluminum, and the pure eutectic ingots were made with 6.2 wt pct Ni. The unidirectional solidification process (described in detail elsewhere1-3) consists of preparing a master heat of eutectic composition, remelting, and withdrawing the ingot vertically downward through the heat source at a controlled rate so that plane front solidification proceeds upward at a constant velocity. The resulting microstructure consists of 10 pct by volume of whiskers of very high aspect (length to diameter) ratio. The fiber lengths have not been measured because of the difficulty of detecting fiber ends9 but exceeds 104. There is some possibility that the fibers may be continuous within one grain. Flat sheet specimens 2¾ in. sq and approximately 0.2 in. thick containing whiskers parallel to the plane of the sheet and to one edge were used for this study. A1-A13Ni exhibits either a rod-like (high solidification rates) or a blade-like (low solidification rates) whisker morphology,1,3 and both types were studied. Rolling was accomplished using a two-high rolling mill at a speed of approximately 10 fpm. The rolling direction was either parallel to or perpendicular to the direction of growth (direction of whisker alignment). Reductions of from 0.002 to 0.03 in. per pass were used with the most common value being 0.005 in. per pass. Cold rolling of Al-Al3Ni to more than 98 pct reduction in thickness was accomplished with no intermediate anneals. In addition. a series of speci-mens was cold rolled 97 pct with a 1-hr, 500°C anneal in air after each 50 pet reduction. Tensile testing was accomplished using a Tinius-lsen four screw testing machine. FOR several years, a mine in Colorado experienced considerable trouble from small fires caused by the blasting of coal. Although a well-known make of permissible powder was used, it was first thought that the powder ignited gas that might be present and that this, in turn, set fire to line brattices or to the coal. Experiments were, therefore, conducted with another make of powder, but the results convinced the superintendent of the mine, Robt. Williams, Jr., that the fires were not caused by the powder but by the high-voltage electric current used for detonating the shots. The mine "makes" gas very freely, giving off from three-fourths to a million cubic feet of methane per 24 hours. The coal is a good grade bituminous of a very free burning quality. Electric shot-firing from the outside after all men and animals were outside had been practiced for a number of years. The shooting circuit was connected with the main power circuit at the mouth of each entry. Shooting circuit switches were mounted in boxes, which were kept locked with the handle of the switch, in open position, showing through the bottom of the box. The door of the box could not be shut and locked when the shooting switch was closed. At the entrance to each room, or working place, a small switch, called the miner's switch, was placed on the shooting line. It was the duty of the miner, when entering his place at the beginning of the shift, to see that this switch was open and that it was kept open until he left the place at the end of the shift to go out of the mine. Grounded return was used for main power lines. The current was 500 volts, direct current, with 100 to 300 amp. The nearest working face was 9600 ft. from the shot-firers' switch outside the mine and the most remote working face was 2 ½ miles. The various working faces were scattered over a wide area between these two points.
