microscopic ohservations on alloys of organic trzaterials show that dendrite arms can melt off under normal conditiorzs of growth. This occurs because of the interactiorz of' heat and matter fluxes during dendritic growth. The re melting occurs where the den-drite arms are joined onto the main deizclrite sterrz. Many detached crystals can be produced in this fashion. It is postulated that this remelting phenornenon occurs in metal alloys, giving rise to the equi-axed region in castings. Experiments peyformed orr castings of transparent materials support remelting as a primary source of detached crystals. Ob~ervations an equiaxed tones in metal castings are discussed in terms of this and other mechanisms. It is concluded that the partial remelting of dendrites is on important mechanisnl for producing the equiaxed regions in castings. THE freezing of a casting can be divided into three regions: a chill zone formed near the mold wall, a columnar region, and a third region, at the center of the casting, which is called the equiaxed zone. The origin of the grains that comprise the equiaxed region is the subject of this paper. We will first outline the mechanisms which have been proposed to account for the origin of the equiaxed region and discuss some recent experiments which cannot be explained by these theories. We will then present some microscopic observations of dendritic growth which have led us to conclude that the equiaxed zone in castings can arise from partial remelting of dendrites. This proposal is supported by observations on transparent castings. Finally, we will discuss several observations on metal castings which could not be explained previously, and which can be accounted for by the present proposal. Previous Mechanisms. Winegard and Chalmers3 pointed out that the molten central region of an ingot could be constitutionally supercooled, because of the solute layer at the growing interface. In this supercooled region, nucleation on particles could occur, giving rise to the equiaxed crystals. Another mechanism has also been suggested,4y5 that the nuclei originate in the chill zone then float or are carried by convection to the center of the casting, where they grow to produce equiaxed crystals. In this case, all the crystals nucleate immediately on casting, so this mechanism will be termed "big-bang" nucleation. Walker's Experiments. J. L. Walker has made observations on the solidification of nickel and Ni-Cu alloys which cannot be accounted for by either of the above mechanisms. In studying the grain size resulting from freezing of nickel at various undercoolings, walker6 found that at large undercoolings the grain size was small, due to mechanical nucleation, as discussed by walker7 and Horvay.' At small undercoolings, the grain size was large, and the growth dendritic. In Ni-Cu alloys, however, for initial undercoolings starting from just below the melting point and extending for a hundred or so degrees of undercooling, fine grains were also observed. Samples were undercooled 200 Centigrade degrees without nucleating, and were then heated 130 Centigrade degrees so that the undercooling was 70 Centigrade degrees, and nucleated. The samples had a small grain size, indicating multiple nucleation. There were no heterogeneous nuclei in the liquid which could operate at the temperature of growth. Constitutional supercooling could not have been greater than the supercooling of the initial melt, since the temperature rose as the freezing continued. walker -as also shown that a Ni-Cu alloy which can be undercooled to below its solidus will produce typical columnar and equiaxed regions when cast into a cold mold. This alloy could not reach a temperature below its solidus by constitutional supercooling. It could not, therefore, have nucleated heterogeneously. Neither the big-bang mechanism nor the Winegard-Chalmers mechanism can account for the fine grain

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in commission at Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but none of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California early conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was. shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. This was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottom of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts were made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type was floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for R. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Oroville ground instead of in a turbulent stream, where the dredge was wrecked during a flood, and was not repaired. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of California, showing gold-dredging areas. It is not my intention to narrate in detail the history of the early failures in gold-dredging, and the various steps in the development of the modern boat, but merely to touch upon this in a general way, and to call attention to the wide difference in capacity and operating-cost between the first successful dredge, with an actual capacity of 600 cu. yd. per day-though its rated capacity was in excess of this-and the present modern dredge with 15-cu. ft. buckets, and an average capacity of 250,000 cu. .yd. per month. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) THE Mariposa estate, a grant made by the Mexican Government to Juan B. Alvarado, during the time when California was still under the dominion of Mexico, was purchased in 1847 by J. C. Fremont, and the United States patent issued to him in 1856. By sale, or its equivalent, money advanced, the property came into the hands of the Mariposa Company, June 25th, 1863, and through a varied existence of work and temporary inactivity, has as yet been kept as an undivided property, and rests at present with the Mariposa Land and Mining Company of California. I pass over this period of 15 years without giving the history of the ups and downs of the estate, partly because it is familiar to many, and also because I think in such a case this paper would assume too much the character of a narrative. The estate is situated in Mariposa County, California, about 170 miles southeast of San Francisco. It begins in lat. 37° 26’ 38" - north, and long. 119° 55' west, and runs 6 miles north; thence 6 1/2 miles west; thence 5 miles northwesterly towards the Merced River; thence 8 1/2 miles southerly; thence 3 miles easterly; thence 1 mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 2 miles southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence I mile southerly; thence 2 miles easterly; thence 1 mile northerly, and thence 2 miles easterly to the place of the beginning; embracing 44,387 acres (70 sq. miles) more or less. To describe this vast estate in detail as to its full geology, its numerous quartz veins, its many facilities to exploit them and work them by cheap methods, would lead me further than I intend to go at present, and I will content myself to describe the latest workings of the company and its immediate field of operations. As long ago as 1860 the late Dr. Adelberg advised the running of an adit from the northwestern edge of the estate at Benton Mills on the Merced River. His object was to undercut the deepest workings of the then paying mines on the estate-the Pine Tree and Josephine. Following this advice, the tunnel known as "River Tunnel" was commenced. A SEARCH through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1.

(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) I. THE CAMAGUEY DEPOSITS. 1. Location. THE Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of San Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name "San Felipe district " is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,1 who says: "The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camaguey City, in the province of Camaguey Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,[1] little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district.

Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Table 1 pictures the waning output.

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other. words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel-zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. . In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard's work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

INTRODUCTION The particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 25,400,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1965. They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful commercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 19 16, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co, Dallas, Texas, and the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., seven other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table. 3. Hey1 and Patterson oscillating table. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig. 5. "Super Airflow," pulsating air jig. 6. Ridge air jig. 7. Phillip air jig. While not all coals can be beneficiated by air washing, the air washing of coals that are easy to clean can be readily proved advantageous. Of all the preparation methods, pneumatic cleaning is the most acceptable from the standpoint of delivered Btu cost. This is based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The principle of dry concentration has never been determined with scientific accuracy. To the present time the study has been more of an art than a science. It is possible to forecast the results of wet concentration from a study of the washability characteristics of the raw coal but only after applying rule-of-thumb methods of interpretation to the specific gravity and size distribution can it be ascertained that the raw coal is amenable to dry concentration. Air as a separating medium dates back to biblical times as exemplified in the winnowing of chaff from the grain. However, the same application of air to coal serves merely to blow the dust away and size the remaining particles. Pulsating air was the solution to the problem and largely eliminated the necessity for close screen sizing which was required on early separators. Because of the low density of air, a medium of sufficient density has to be built with the material itself. Hence there must be some device to impart to the bed the necessary mobility for proper classification. Also, the

IN no part of the world other than a small area in Pennsylvania is anthracite mining an industry of major magnitude. As the deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered a state rather than a national problem. However, there is also national interest in the conservation and wise utilization of all the country's fuel resources and in the control of interstate waterways. The anthracite industry is confronted with a serious problem of water accumulation in many of the mines, a problem that must be solved in the near future if progressively higher mining costs are to be avoided. It cannot be solved by the operating companies without state or Federal aid, or both, owing to the magnitude of the work required, the diversity of interests of the coal and surface ownerships, the hazard to the whole mining community, and interests affected outside the mining region. 'The costs of abating the ever-increasing surface seepage to mine workings and of handling this seepage once it has occurred are beyond the eco¬nomic resources of the operating managements.

Most commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-Alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc-alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. It was therefore concluded that the other existing phase change, namely, the segregation of secondary phase from the zinc-base solid solution, must account for the major portion of the shrinkage.

ONLY two of the Institute's 26 Local Sections were unrepresented at the delegates' three sessions, held on Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon of the annual meeting. The Philadelphia and Wyoming Sections alone sent no delegates. In all, seven hours were spent most profitably in reviewing the work done by the Institute at headquarters and in the field, comparing ideas and practices in varied activities, and in establishing personal contacts. Cordiality and the co¬operative spirit marked the meeting and apparently no one had any serious grievances to air. Four motions were introduced and unanimously passed. The first, which was introduced by B. L. Sackett, was a recommendation by the delegates that a national committee be appointed to cooperate with Local Sections in the matter of student activities, to promote Institute welfare. It was agreed that this recommendation be made simultaneously to the Board of Directors and to the Mineral Industry Education Division. A subsequent resolution by A. M. Smith was passed asking that a part of the duties of this committee be to secure the opinions of Local Sections as to the most desirable methods of interesting students in the preparation of technical papers, by giving prizes or otherwise, and to report their findings at the Section Delegates' meeting next year.

AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.

RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient.
