Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. The uptake of gold by activated carbon from acid chloride solutions involves the reduction of gold(IIl) to metallic gold. Deposition occurs only on the surface of the carbon at localized active sites at first, and subsequently at less active areas. The rate of uptake depends on the surface area of activated carbon, which confirms results from a recently published study (de Siegel and Soto, 1984). Increased rates of uptake were observed at higher temperatures and lower chloride concentrations due to the decreased stability of AuCI4-, the major gold(IIl) species present. Recoveries of gold approached 100 per cent for a contact time of 60 minutes at 20°C in a well stirred solution initially 5 ppm in gold(III) and containing 0.5 per cent w/v coconut-shell carbon. The presence of 0.25 Mnitric acid or 100 ppm iron(IIl) had no detectable effect on either rate or efficiency of gold uptake.

Dynamic pile testing is now over 20 years old as a routinely applied tool for evaluating driven pile installation. The first test on a cast-in-place pile was performed more that 15 years ago. The research that produced the method began almost 30 years ago. But, questions still arise regarding the appropriate use of this technique so some review is useful. Today a number of methods including dynamic testing all depending in some way on the application of dynamics are in routine use. First, Wave Equation analysis can be used to predict pile driveability before going to the field. The same approach can be used during driving to estimate the bearing capacity based on the blow count observed in the field. Dynamic measurements, on the other hand, can only be used after pile driving has begun. They offer predictions of pile capacity as well as measurements of hammer, driving system, and pile driving performance characteristics. The first part of this paper will be devoted to discussing how the foundation engineer can use these tools. First, a brief review of what dynamic methods actually do. In Wave Equation analysis a numerical model of the hammer, driving system, pile, and the soil is created by the engineer. The hammer is dropped on the pile and using a discrete, dynamic analysis the motion of the individual pile elements is calculated as a function of time. Of course, input information must be supplied by the program user to describe the hammer, driving system, pile, and soil. In the current state of development, the primary problem in input data is with the hammer performance (efficiency) and the soil description. Research may be able to do a better job with the soil data, but hammer performance will always vary from hammer to hammer and is dependent on the affectiveness of the inspection process. Prior to beginning pile driving the Wave Equation analysis supplies the best available estimate of what will happen when driving begins. It gives an estimate of blow count during driving, driving stresses, both tension and compression in the pile, and for diesel hammers, stroke. The selection of the driving system can be checked with the results of Wave Equation analysis and modifications can be made if required. For example, if the blow count at the required capacity was deemed excessive by the contractor a larger hammer could be tried or if driving stresses were too high changes could be made in the cushion or the hammer selection could be modified. All of these modifications are possible with only the cost of a computer run. The primary questions regarding the accuracy and reliability of Wave Equation analysis at this time is with regard to the assumptions made to represent the soil characteristics and the difficulty in predicting hammer performance.

If all stratifications are horizontal, the computation of surface deformation induced by coal mining involves the prediction of roof and floor convergence and then the transfer of the effects of this relative displacement to the surface through the use of the appropriate influence functions. A laminated model, in the form of a quasi- continuum, provides a simple means of computing the approximate convergence distribution and leads to the Gaussian distribution as the influence function. The ideas presented in this paper represent a subtle but fundamental generalization of the influence function Method. It is postulated that the influence of a small area of extraction is proportional to the roof and floor convergence and not to the thickness extracted. This difference in definition removes many conceptual difficulties associated with the influence function method. To demonstrate the utility of the model, the surface disturbances induced by the extraction of a parallel sided long panel are derived. Formulae giving subsidence, tilt, horizontal displacement and strain are given.

This report presents a summary of the results of a four-phase program conducted for the Bureau of Mines to evaluate underground mine fire detection systems. In addition, Phase IV is presented in detail. The major accomplishments of this program are: 1) quantification and prediction of the distribution of fire products in a mine pas¬sageway; 2) quantification of "equivalent protection" by fire detectors as contained in Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations; 3) definition of detection criteria; 4) design of a detector test program for determining detector spacing requirements; 5) design, construction, operation, and calibration of a fire test apparatus for evaluating mine fire detectors; 6) quantification of several mine fire sources; 7) evaluation of several fire detector types including heat, CO and CO2 gas, and ionization smoke detectors; 8) development of generalized spacing criteria for mine fire detectors; and 9) development of performance specifications. Reports for Phases I through III are included in Appendices.

"INTRODUCTION The discovery in 1901 of ""gusher"" oil production at Spindletop, Tex., Tex., a salt-dome structure, led to exploratory drilling on other known domes and known domes and in areas contiguous to salt domes in the Gulf Coast region of Texas and Louisiana. Early drilling on the flanks of the domal structures disclosed incompetent 3/ shales, which flowed into the hole when attempts were made to drill through them. Often these shales seized the drill pipes and presented with equipment then in use, an insuperable barrier to deeper drilling. The obstructing incompetent shales came to be called ""heaving"" shales by drillers who attempted to drill through them. Formations of this type have hampered the penetration of the drill bit in many area in the Gulf Coast region to such an extent that the drilling of wells through heaving shale has become a major problem."

Electromagnetic energy emitted from electronic devices has been known to interfere with other electronic systems, hindering their ability to function properly. Mines have many electronic devices critical to the health and safety of mine workers that could be negatively affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI). To ensure that devices are electromagnetically compatible, tests must first be conducted to measure emissions and check for immunity. Standards are available across multiple industries that prescribe emission limits and test methods for electronic devices. A literature review was conducted in this study, and an overview of EMI standards in other industries is provided. Also, an example of how a standard can be applied to mining equipment is presented.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

Recent advances in solid-state, field portable, fast framing compact video camera systems and PC based frame capture hardware now allow blast imaging up to 1000 frames per second. Up to 4.1 seconds of data can be captured directly into the unit, downloaded to a PC or archived to a standard VCR without data compression. Since no film processing is involved, motion analysis can be performed instantly and on-site within a few minutes. This paper will describe the design features and applications of the MotionMeter system and compare these with the analogous aspects of film-based cameras and other systems. Of all blast monitoring systems and techniques available today, high-speed motion picture photography and videography still remain as the most valuable, stand alone, diagnostic techniques for troubleshooting and evaluating full scale blasts in the mining and explosives industries. High-speed image data, coupled with information obtained from other instrumentation systems, such as continuous velocity of detonation recorders, laser surveying systems, refraction and ground vibration recording seismographs, etc., can eliminate many assumptions about what actually took place in a blast. Thus, diagnostic confidence in evaluating both excellent and poorly designed blasts is increased, and optimum blast results, (which are application dependent), are achieved considerably faster when compared to the trial and error approach of relying on strictly the experience factor. Applications include developing site-specific blast designs, decay equations relating burden, burden velocity and explosive energy, determining ground response times, reducing coal damage, quantifying backbreak, evaluating the effectiveness of sternming, checking delay detonator firing times, evaluating air decks and for studying general dynamics. Motion analysis is performed with a 2D and 3D software package developed specifically for video analysis, but is also directly applicable to film analysis when using a digitizer. Dimensional controls, lens aberration, field set-ups and camera orientation are all automatically corrected for with matrix analysis.

Underground depillaring of contiguous coal seams/sections is a difficult problem, which becomes even more complex if the interburden/parting between them is thin. Conventionally, the depillaring with caving of contiguous seams/sections is done in descending order. However, if the parting is thin, the influence of the top sections/seams working over the standing pillars of bottom the sections/seams becomes extremely important for the safety and optimal exploitation of coal. Field investigations were carried out at Nowrozabad East mine where superimposed pillars of the Johilla top section were depillared above the developed pillars of the Johilla bottom section with a 3 m thick parting between the two sections. The competency of the 3 m thick parting (which consists of alternate layers of shale, sandstone and shaly sandstone) was improved by reinforcement (underpinning). The strata control investigations did not show any considerable instability problem of the 3 m thick reinforced parting and pillars of the bottom section due to top section depillaring. On the basis of this field investigation and a laboratory study on simulated models, simultaneous extraction of both the sections, along with reinforcement of the parting, was suggested for the geomining conditions of the Johilla top and bottom sections. Adopting the suggested simultaneous depillaring process, two sub panels of Johilla top and bottom sections have successfully been extracted without any strata control problem. This paper presents this case study along with the results of the strata monitoring conducted to evaluate performance of the underground structures during the field trial.

As an alternative to heavy water cooling, reactors cooled by organic liquids are being actively developed in Canada under the sponsorship of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. One of the areas in which development has been required is that of core materials. The factors affecting the selection of fuel canning and coolant tube materials are discussed. It is shown that S.A.P. is a potentially attractive material for these applications. The fabrication of fuel sheathing is discussed. Difficulties met due to large inclusions and blistering due to high hydrogen contents have been overcome by magnetic separation and vacuum sintering of the powders. High-quality tubes can now be produced by extrusion to finished size. A study has been made of the mechanical properties of fuel-sheathing tubes and bar stock. The stress rupture properties of the tubes subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress have been determined. The biaxial stress tests were performed by internal pressurization. The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. That immeasurable ages have been consumed in effecting these developments is also conceded. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

"Deep sea mining of polymetallic sulphides will change the physical and chemical conditions at the seafloor by creating scars when sulphides are removed, and potentially also by deposition of mine tailings at the seafloor. These changes will impact the existing ecosystems at the seafloor in and around the mined areas. Seafloor Massive Sulphide deposits that have been exposed to oxic seawater weather into Fe-metal-oxyhydroxides. However, the rates of weathering and release of heavy metals and other toxic compounds to the environment from freshly exposed sulphides in a deep-sea environment are not well studied.During a cruise to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea in July 2014 we will initiate in-situ experiments investigating the microbiological and geochemical processes involved in the weathering of freshly exposed massive sulphides deposits in a natural environment. This will be done by creating scars in naturally occurring sulphide deposits and by deploying weathering experiments at the seafloor. The sites will be revisited and re-sampled in 2015. The mobility and fate of heavy metals will be one of the main concerns of the study as well as constraining the time it will take for exposed sulphides to return to the chemical state present prior to mining. In this presentation we will present the experimental framework and the preliminary results from the July 2014 cruise. This project is part of the EU funded MIDAS (Managing impacts of deep sea resource exploitation) project."

"THE Mattagami district of Quebec has, during the past few years, experienced intense exploration by virtually every mining company operating in Canada. As a result of this activity, a number of well-mineralized zinc-copper bearing bodies have been found, some of which will almost certainly go into production. Much of the area has undergone what is now termed ""Saturation Prospecting"" or intense and detailed geological and geophysical surveying, followed by the drilling of nearly all possible bets. Considering only the airborne geophysical surveying, some blocks of ground have been flown by virtually every geophysical instrument which has to date been installed in an aircraft. A list of these different geophysical instruments would include: l. Fluxgate-type total field magnetometers 2. Vertical field magnetometer ,3. Nuclear-precession magnetometers 4. Single-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 5. Dual-frequency out-of-phase electromagnetometers 6. Horizontal component measuring electromagnetometers 7. In-phase and out-of-phase electromagnetometers8. Dip-angle measuring electromagnetometers."

In the U.S., flexible metal pipe culverts are designed by ring compression theory because the pipes are capable of deflecting and deriving side support from surrounding ground. For economy, tunnel liners are often designed as flexible structures that depend on the lateral pressure of the surrounding ground to maintain stability. In this paper, simple formulas are presented to determine the maximum deflection a concrete tunnel liner may assume and the ring compressive strength of the deflected liner. A tunnel can then be constructed to work within these limits. Similar techniques may be used to design concrete pipes.

Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

Beyer Barometric Condenser The Ingersoll-Rand Co. is now offering to the trade complete steam­condensing plants for all service conditions. This equipment includes the Beyer barometric condenser, for' which the company has secured the patent rights, Imperial duplex and Ingersoll-Rogler straight-line reciprocating dry vacuum pumps and, where required, Cameron simplex and centrifugal pumps. The Beyer barometric condenser is of the counter-current type, in which air and cooling water flow in opposite directions. The steam inlet is at the bottom of the condensing v el, the water inlet above and the air-removal opening at the top. The sheets of cooling water over owing the pool at the inlet point meet the entering steam. The two are brought into intimate contact by conical baffle plates which assist the water to absorb to its full capacity the latent heat of the steam. The non-condensable air liberated in the condensing action rises through the falling water to the removal point at the top, being cooled to practically the temperature of the incoming water.
