Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A prototype high-resolution electromagnetic system, based on the theory of controlled-source magnetotellurics, was developed. The electrical source field is fed into the earth by dipoles at preselected frequencies and a multi-channel receiver measures five electric and three orthogonal magnetic fields. Suitable mapping algorithms and spatial filters are applied to the data and a new technique permits calibration during measurement. The system was field tested over a blind orebody, at 250-550 m depth, in the Aguas Tenidas area of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Ten lines totalling 12 000 m of profile length were completed in seven days and the orebody was identified. The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world associated with different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions with are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which can therefore not always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyze these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyze the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating conditions are better understood, and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

El presente texto revisa los métodos utilizados en las minas de tajo de abierto como son la perforación, disparo y seguridad y así mejorar los standars y el rendimiento futuro en la industria minera. Respecto al primer método empleado, se analizan los factores que afectan el rendimiento de brocas y cómo dicho factores varían, impidiendo la adaptación de prácticas universales de perforación. Asu vez, estos mismos permiten seleccionar el tipo de broca adecuado y mejorar el máximo rendimiento del mismo. En cuanto la voladura y los explosivos, se revisan las variables fundamentales que ejercen una influencia sobre el resultado de un disparo y así realizar un estudio comparativo de los agentes explosivos en uso, tratando de interpretar el mecanismo de la explosión y a la vez aplicarlo a las diferentes formaciones presentes en Cerro. Finalmente, se describe la organización del sistema de seguridad y las obligaciones de este comité en la industria minera.

Spent potliner is generated in the electrolytic process of reducing alumina to make aluminum metal using molten fluoride electrolytes. Spent potliner (SPL), obtained at the end of the pots life contains a small amount of cyanide and fluoride which present environmental problems. SPL became a listed hazardous waste under RCRA (KO88) in July, 1990. One of the possible uses of spent potliner is as a substitute for Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) as a fluidizer in iron- and steelmaking and in the glass industry. A low viscosity and a low melting point are prime requirements for accomplishing the above. In the present study, viscosity measurements were performed. Effect of various additives, such as sand, limestone, dicalcium silicate dust, and MgO baghouse dust on the viscosity of SPL was studied. The results showed that with the addition of sand and limestone, very high fluidity of SPL melt can be obtained at significantly low temperatures. The results suggest that spent potliner mixed with additives could potentially be used as a substitute fluidizer.

"INTRODUCTION The primary purpose of the Bureau of Mines electrolytic manganese pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., is to improve the Bureau-invented electrowinning process and to determine the applicability of the process to the extensive domestic low-grade manganese ores with a view to making the United States dependent upon foreign sources of manganese. 3/4/ Incidental to accomplishing this purpose, the pilot plant has produced a substantive quantity of electrorytic manganese since the start of operations late in 1941; present cabacity about 1 ton a day of manganese metal. A second important purpose of the pilot plant is the supplying of electrolytic manganese for full-scale tests in cooperation with industrial users of manganese.The Rustless Iron& Steel Corp., Baltimore, Md., was the first steel company to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in large-scale testing of electrolytic manganese. Arrangements were made with C. E. Tuttle, then president of the corporation, whereby the Bureau would supply electrolytic manganese to make a sufficient number of full-scale stainless-steel heats to demonstrate thoroughly its merits as a replacement for low-carbon ferro-manganese in the corporation's stainless-steel practice. The corporation's purpose in the investigation was to determine the possible advantages of electrolytic manganese resulting from its almost complete lack of phosphorus and caroon that might offset its then considerably higher cost per unit of manganese than low-carbon ferromanganese. The data presented herein are based upon reports of A. L. Field, technical director, and L. Weitzenkern, research engineer of Rustless Iron & Steel Corp.; they are supplemented by observation of the author who visited the plant during the tests."

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

The structural variations occurring in pellets of finely divided mixtures of iron ore and coke breeze, metallized by firing at elevated temperatures, have been examined microscopically. For any given pellet composition, time and temperature are the two most important factors in determining the development of the bonding processes.INTRODUCTIONThe success of sintering and pelletizing processes in the agglomeration of fine iron ores for blast furnace use has brought about rapid changes in thinking relative to methods of preparing furnace burdens. Increases in productivity with the use of sinter emphasize the advantages of a stable, uniformly sized furnace feed. Current practice is to produce a self-fluxing sinter containing most of the lime requirements of the furnace incorporated as a stable medium (Figgis and Charker, 1962). The elimination of fine material from the burden allows greater stack permeability and smoother operation.Sintering and pelletizing of iron ores with or without the incorporation of fluxing compounds has conditioned operators to the extent that it is now considered possible that all components of the burden may eventually be beneficiated in one form or another. Investigations are in hand to improve the quality and sizing of coke, which occupies the major part of the burden volume (Callcott, Innes and Brown, 1961; Innes, Gregory and Worner, 1963). Interest is also being revived in methods of pre-reducing iron ores prior to charging to the furnace (Hansen, Melcher and Fine, 1961). The surge in demand for battery materials, coupled with environmental challenges linked to battery disposal, underscores the need to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Green recycling approaches, in particular, have garnered attention for battery recycling. In this study, a hydrometallurgical method using a synergetic organic lixiviant combining methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and citric acid (CA) as an alternative to inorganic mineral acids was introduced as a green approach to recycle cathode materials of LIBs. The conditions for leaching and recovery processes were optimized. Cathode materials were regenerated using the recovered materials. Moreover, the leaching performance and economic feasibility of this leaching system were compared with those of various other organic acids.

This information circular describes mining methods and practices at New Cornelia Branch, Phelps Dodge Corp., Ajo, Ariz. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The New Cornelia mine (fig. 1) is at Ajo, a town in southwestern Arizona (fig. 2) on Arizona State Highway 85 in the western part of Pima County. The [oncentrator] and smelter are near the mine (fig. 3). Copper ore is mined, crushed, ground, and concentrated, and the concentrates are smelted. Copper is cast in anode form and sent to the Phelps Dodge Corp. refinery in El Paso, Tex.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. GIS documents are of great interest for a quick and low-cost determination of areas endangered by rockfalls. They allow (i) the detection of potential instabilities from steep slopes and cliff areas, and (ii) the preliminary estimation of potential run-out areas by means of a so-called cone method. After the presentation of the tools used to compute these areas, the paper focuses on two methods developed for a preliminary hazard mapping, one at regional scale and the other at local scale. Phase designs are the foundation upon which all open pit mine sequence optimizations and budgets should be built. Unfortunately, at times, mine engineers skip the step of developing realistic pit phase designs - designs that include access ramps and mineable widths. Without mineable phase designs, their optimized schedules are based on theoretical pit shells or ?quick-and-dirty? plans with no ramps. The output from such optimizations is almost always overly optimistic. Without mineable designs, the production estimates are misleading, because they overestimate ore, and underestimate waste stripping requirements. Worse yet, when plans are not based on realistic phase designs, they can point to exactly the wrong decision in feasibility studies (i.e. ?go? when it should be ?no-go?). This paper discusses the importance and features of good pit phase design, and demonstrates the pitfalls of relying on optimized production sequences that are not based on properly designed pit phases.

"An expert system applied to the control of mineral process unit operations is, by its nature, the site best operating practice, having been designed by the local experts in conjunction with consulting metallurgists. The “common sense” layer in a MET (MinnovEX Expert Technology) solution determines an appropriate action for the current operating conditions through a developed heuristic model of the process (expert system). The magnitude of the setpoint change that is made is proportional to the confidence that the system has in its interpretation of the current conditions (fuzzy logic). The solution is always striving to take the process to a constraint and thereby optimise the operation. An accepted limitation of the solution is that the only way the system can determine if a constraint has been reached is to exceed it and then withdraw – essentially “experimenting” with the process. By leveraging a model, which can accurately ""simulate"" the process, this restriction can be circumvented by pre-testing the set point change through a ""what if"" analysis and then modifying the solution as appropriate.At Ok Tedi, the introduction in 1999 of a MET expert system for SAG milling resulted in significant improvement in circuit throughput. Yet, with the additional inclusion of an accurate model of the process there was still more that could be achieved. Hence, in 2002 a MET Neural Network model was developed and deployed to enhance the existing expert system solution. The principal objective of this model was predicting the effect that changes in SAG tonnage and density would have on the power draw of the mill - essentially a power predictor. The results have seen a decrease in process variance with an associated increase in average circuit performance.This paper describes the methodology by which the Neural Network model was implemented, the considerations and limitations when applying this technology and ultimately the results that were achieved."

This paper considers the application of recent laboratory gas sorption data to the understanding outburst phenomena in underground coal mining. Previous use of threshold limits based on gas content and coal rank are placed in perspective. Although this work focuses on overseas research and experience, parallels can be drawn for New Zealand coal settings, taking into account localised mining and geological factors.

This manual provides basic practical instruction on the inspection of driven piles. It covers the essential components of pile driving, such as the pile driving hammer, hammer accessories, the pile and soil, and frequently encountered test methods in an uncomplicated, yet knowledgeable, and practical manner. Insight is given into the methods of installing the foundation, dealing with the cranes which do the lifting, the hammers which do the driving, the leads that guide the hammer and pile, the compressors which provide the external power when required, and finally prevalent analysis tools and testing instrumentation and procedures which enable you, the Inspector, to do your job. This DFI Inspector's Manual for Pile Foundations will help the Pile Inspector who has limited knowledge of pile foundations. Perhaps this Inspector has been pressed into service at a moments notice; a few helpful hints and suggestions to him are desperately needed and he can look here for the basics. It is also useful for the experienced Pile Inspector as a reference guide. However, this manual is not a detailed check list of every possible scenario and detail which could ever be encountered. There are other sources available which give more detailed descriptions (and should be consulted by the Inspector when appropriate; a list of this additional reference material is provided and suggestions made in appropriate chapters of this text). The current manual is more a brief "textbook overview" with some of the more important aspects given at least some emphasis so that the Inspector has some direction and hopefully helps to produce a safe, yet economical, foundation.

Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.
