The experience of Mufulira concentrator, of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited, with underground mine drainage water, which is used in milling operations is discussed. It is shown that the underground mine water has a deleterious effect on flotation performance. The adverse effect of the underground water was successfully negated by adding lime into the primary ball mills and increasing the pH of the slurry, from a ?natural? pH of 8 to the flotation pH of 10.5. Traditionally, the pH modifier, quicklime, had been added downstream of the milling. Changing the lime addition point further reduced lime consumption by 50%,?a key issue as lime accounted for over 60% of the Mufulira flotation reagent costs. The nature of the effect of the underground water at Mufulira, particularly the sensitivity of the flotation to the pH at which the milling was conducted, characterized galvanic interaction. A large-scale plant situation is presented in which the desired electro-chemical response in the flotation was achieved, by a deliberate manipulation of the milling environment. The experience provides practical testimony of a more fundamental role for the milling process, other than the mere physical preparation, i.e. size reduction and liberation, of mineral particles prior to flotation.

Magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) are used with continuous mining machines (CMMs) to protect miners from striking and pinning accidents. Generators are used in a PDS to create magnetic fields covering the space around a CMM. The PDS determines the proximity of a miner relative to the CMM based on the magnetic flux density detected by a miner-wearable component (MWC) and simultaneously alerts the miner and stops the motion of the CMM if the miner is within a proximity that creates a striking hazard. A stable magnetic field is essential to the accuracy of the proximity calculations performed by the PDS. This paper presents the results of a systematic study of the magnetic influence of two types of steel structures found near a CMM— the body of the CMM itself and the wire mesh used for roof and rib control. The results show that the steel of the CMM body can change the magnetic field distribution and also alter electrical parameters of a PDS by changing its generator current. The study also shows that, depending on the distance between the wire mesh and a generator, the magnetic field can also be altered.

INTRODUCTION Today, conventional raise boring is an accepted method of development in underground mines and on major construction projects. Over the years that this technique, and its associated machines and tools, have been under development, many articles have been written on the subject. To a great extent, these papers have reported operating results of one or more specific projects or have been generalized reviews of state-of-the-art machines and tools. This paper is intended as a review of the technique from an operational standpoint. Conventional raise boring, as opposed to the related variants box hole drilling and underground blast hole drilling, is a two step process consisting of the pilot hole drilling and reaming cycles. This author has covered the subject of pilot hole drilling in another article (1) . A good review of the current machines and equipment has been presented by Monroe (2) and an overall review of this entire technology was published by E&MJ (3) and Mining Journal, April, 1983 (4) . The subject of the reaming cycle is presented here together with some of the technical aspects of how the drilling tools are intended to be used. "INTRODUCTION In a previous publication4 results were given of numerous experiments made on the in-flammability of gas mixtures consisting of methane, hydro a. carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. Data were obtained and tables prepared giving the inflammable limits of each of these combustibles when mixed with various proportions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. By the use of these data and the application of Le Chatelier's law, it was found possible to calculate the limits of inflammability of any gas mixture containing any or all of the above gases.Various mixtures of the five gases given above were prepared and their limits determined experimentally and then calculated. Good agreement was found between the determined and calculated results when complex gases encountered in mine safety work were tested. Of special significance was the accurate calculation of the limits of inflammability of gases from mine fires, gases from mine explosions, detonation products of explosives, blast—furnace gases, automobile exhaust gas, and other gases of a similar character.Using the method given in the above report, Yeaw5 investigated a number of industrial gases including oven, coal, producer, blue, carbureted blue, and dry quencher gases, and found the determined and calculated results to agree remarkably well, thus giving further proof of the value of such a means of determining dangerous conditions when combustible gases are encountered in practice.GASES FROM A POTASH MINEGases were recently encountered in a potash nine in New Mexico, containing the com-bustibles, methane, hydrogen, and ethane. In one special case a mild explosion occurred when these gases were mixed with the right proportions of air and ignited it therefore became necessary to know the inflammability of these mixtures in order that the proper precautions could be taken to prevent explosions."

A large-diameter road tunnel will cross beneath the strait in Istanbul and expand the infrastructure bottleneck between Europe and Asia. The technical planning of the tunneling operations poses complex challenges. Therefore, the construction consortium ordered a specially adapted tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Herrenknecht. The 13.6-m (44.6-ft) machine, a Mixshield, was completed in early July 2013 in Schwanau, Germany. To get from the European to the Asian side of Istanbul, people and goods have to cross the Bosporus Straits. So far, two road bridges as well as ferries provide the only transport link between the two parts of the city and the two continents. The tense traffic situation for the nearly 14 million residents of the city and for international transit traffic should be improved considerably thanks to the construction of a new road tunnel under the Bosporus. ?The project is certainly one of the most challenging tunneling operations currently being addressed in the world,? said Herrenknecht project manager Georg Schleer. The route of the ?Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project? runs around 100 m (330 ft) below sea level at its deepest point. The interior diameter of the tunnel will be 12 m (40 ft) so that two lanes in each direction can be accommodated. They will extend one above the other on two levels. 3.34 km (2.1 miles) of the tunnel with a total length of 5.4 km (3.3 miles) are being created by a 13.6-m- (44.6-ft-) diameter Herrenknecht TBM that will begin its underground mission from a launch shaft on the Asian side.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

In 1994, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) commenced a system-wide Seismic Improvement Program to protect their facilities from catastrophic damage. A primary focus of this program has been on retrofitting the 75-year old Claremont Tunnel, which crosses the active Hayward Fault zone. A large earthquake on the Hayward Fault could generate enough right-lateral fault slip to effectively sever this important lifeline. The retrofit project involves construction of a new bypass tunnel through the Hayward Fault zone, together with systematic contact grouting and localized structural repair of the existing concrete liner. Several innovative design measures have been incorporated into the seismic retrofit design, including an oversized tunnel cross section, backfill concrete side drifts, seismic isolation of an internal structural pipe, and shear fuses in the final lining.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

The Brightwater Conveyance System consists of four tunnel segments in three tunnel con-tracts, comprising over 21,760 m (71,400 ft) of pressurized face tunneling in complex glacial and non-glacial soft ground conditions with a large proportion 60 m (197 ft) or more below the ground surface with up to 7 bars groundwater head. This resulted in unique technical challenges for establishing geotechnical baseline values. The process used to develop these baseline values and specifications with regard to the level of risk that the owner, King County, was willing to accept is described in this paper.

The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results.   The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. "Grouting aims to reduce the permeability of rock mass below a predetermined value and has been widely used in rock engineering field for a long time. However, the injection procedure needs several empirical decision makings and it is rather difficult to reliably confirm the achievement of improvement, because the grout penetration process is not sufficiently clarified. This investigation proposes a neuronal method of defining spatial distribution of rock hydraulic properties and a fuzzy scheme for estimating their relation with the grout penetration (consumption, localization and filling material). The intelligent method stands as a tool for helping in harmonizing the sealing activities and the medium conditions. The virtual simulation of grouting strategies embraces geology, hydraulic and rock characteristics and the filling process. Important aspects as different pressure injection levels and fracturing systems can be holistically studied using the intelligent environment, resulting in an advantageous, economic, flexible and interactive tool for planning better this critical activity.INTRODUCTION Grouting is a very common method of sealing rock and repairing concrete structures (Butron et al., 2010) and its use in engineering of dam-foundation and tunneling has been documented as very successful (Yang, 2004). Generally speaking, to achieve the closing purpose, boreholes are drilled into the rock mass and grout is injected (under pre-selected pressure) until the fractures around the borehole are filled. The complete filling of these fractures is possible if they are connected to each other in such a way that the remaining water and air can be displaced outside the designed grouting zone (Houlsby, 1990; Kutzner, 1996). Water testing is necessary for evaluating seepage potential and for determining whether grouting is necessary or practical. Regardless of the main reason for the investigations, design of a program for water testing for grouting should consider the type of structure to be built, the geologic conditions at the site and the level of seepage control desired. As information gathered the report must content the fracture openness, number and connectivity, exploratory drill holes orientations, materials situation and a panorama of rock-mass state (quality)."

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.
