Control of ground water for construction purposes is an everyday occurrence in the U.S. Thousands of pumps are in service at any given time. Most of these applications simply consist of pumping water out of an excavation, generally with the aid of sumps. Modern hydraulic and electric submersible pumps permit these procedures because of their ability to pump solids and take air without losing their prime. These procedures work fine up to a point and permit the contractor to control his ground water problems adequately and at minimal cost. When that point is exceeded, the ground water problems sometimes are compounded. Over-application of open pumping techniques can result in slope failures, cofferdam instability, bottom heaving, boils, loss of ground, damage to adjacent structures and utilities, and assorted other maladys which could and should be avoided. This paper will deal with the options involved in ground water control, a discussion of the unwanted side effects of dewatering, and examples of ground water control projects in various cities around the U.S.

"Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 5000C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to selfheat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.INTRODUCTIONPrevious publications from this laboratory on the evaluation of self-heating in sulphides dealt with tailings backfill (Rosenblum et al. 1982) and waste rock (Rosenblum and Spira 1995). Sulphide concentrates may likewise exhibit self-heating in storage or during shipping. In a comprehensive but dated review, Kirshenbaum (1 968) pointed out the conflicting nature of information on means of controlling the problem, particularly with regard to the application of water and ventilation. Modelling by Simpson (1 97 1) of autogenous heating in stockpiled zinclead concentrate and associated field measurements by Wright et al. (1972) showed that the supply of oxygen by wind and the shape of the piles were the major factors in the development of hot spots. Simpson did not attempt to explain the complex mechanism of self-heating, simply ascribing its onset to oxidation. Pearse (1 980) investigated a potential method of testing for selfheating which consisted of (i) reaction with hydrogen peroxide and (ii) differential thermal anal sis, to characterize the response of concentrates at both ambient and temperatures above 100 C. He found the method sensitive enough to identify the need for careful handling but not to predict ignition. He recommended compacting concentrates and covering stockpiles with plastic sheeting to prevent ingress of air. All these workers recognized the key role played by oxygen and moisture in triggering self-heating."

Heat and humidity buildup within refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a life-sustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. "INTRODUCTION This report is one of a series. 4. 5. 6/ concerned with presenting historical development, and operating data on secondary-recovery projects in various States to stimulate interest in sound secondary-recovery programs. Preceding reports in this series have dealt exclusively with descriptions of and results obtained by water flooding in three states, but no recent publication of comparable purpose describes gas-injection 7/ practices. The authors intend to present material relevant to the development and operation of gas-injection projects in Illinois, with particular emphasis on those producing from oil-bearing horizons that had been depleted to a point near the economic limit of operation by past oil-recovery methods.Most operators realize that the energy expended on the movement of fluids through gas-expansion- or gas-cap-type oil reservoirs to producing wells must be supplemented to attain maximum recovery of the oil present. Under favorable conditions, many operators choose to maintain oil-propulsive forces at or near their original magnitude by injecting extraneous fluids into a reservoir or recycling produced fluids early in the life of a field. More common, and less desirable, is the practice of replenishing these forces after primary producing methods become unprofitable. The lattes practice has been adopted in many stripper fields in Illinois and most of the oil-producing States during the last 40 years, but other old oil fields, and oil properties within those fields which were partly exploited by secondary--recovery methods, also may offer favorable opportunity for further development. To encourage and, aid operators in the development of gas-injection projects in the old oil fields of the United States, four projects have been described in detail in this report."

The Courthouse Commons Tunnel facilitates the secure transfer of inmates between the County Jail and State Courthouse across a city block in downtown San Diego, California. This shallow tunnel was excavated using the Sequential Excavation Method in soft ground. It passes under 8- and 10-story buildings with a foundation cover of 6 feet, and crosses the active San Diego Fault with a design offset displacement of 18 inches. Papers of this series are written by engineers and executives of mining companies , at the solicitation of the Bureau , and in accordance with an outline prepared by Bureau engineers , for the purpose of securing uniform presentation and conformable data . The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co. is situated near the city of Juneau , Alaska , in what is known as the Harris mining district . Wholesale mining operations have been adopted on a large scale and 10,000 to 11,000 tons per day of gold- bearing ore are mined and sent to concentrators near Juneau . In addition to gold , the ore yields 0.6 ounce of silver and 13.0 pounds of lead to each ounce of gold recovered .

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. This infold has been faulted and intruded by albite porphyry resulting in the formation of a composite body of slates...

Yield pillars have been used for many years to help reduce stresses near mine openings and improve roof and floor stability. A yield pillar is often defined as a pillar that fails but retains residual strength. Stress transfer occurs through the roof and floor after the peak strength of the pillar is reached. High stresses are transferred from around the openings onto abutments that can be barrier pillars or unmined ground. This mechanism, often referred to as pressure arching, is possible as long as the width of yield pillars is less than the critical width above which stresses cannot be carried by the overburden. Significant stress transfer also can occur due to small amounts of pillar and/or floor yielding before the peak strength is reached. This is accomplished in a quasi-elastic manner with little or no visible roof and pillar fracturing or floor heave. Long-term stability may be achieved when stresses and mechanical properties are favorable to pre-failure yielding. This paper gives practical examples where improvements in stability and resource recovery were achieved with this mechanism. Yielding was assessed by comparing measured and calculated vertical pillar stresses. Results indicated that calculated stresses in the pillars were 25 to 40 percent higher than the measured stresses, demonstrating significant arching load transfer to the abutments. Pre-failure yielding is probably often present but unintentional in both development and production areas. Better recognition and use of this mechanism should lead to improved designs as mines become deeper.

This Bureau of Mines report is an expansion and update of Information Circular 8719 and comprises maps and tables listing the name, location, and other pertinent data concerning certain fuel-related projects. The maps show the locations of the planned or proposed facilities. The tables include information on projects involving the proposed or planned development of fuel resources, as well as the development of storage, transportation, and conversion facilities. The report covers the 24 States west of the Mississippi River including Alaska and Hawaii. Of the 808 projects for which information is provided, 219 concern coal mines, 246 concern electric generating plants, and 115 concern uranium mines; Energy Supply and Environmental Coordination Act coal conversion notices are also included. Because of the dynamic nature of the energy industry, many uncertainties exist and some of the listed projects may never become realities. Also, no attempt has been made to determine the degree of certainty or viability of each project.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. The reduction was carried out at 800-900° C., a rapid flow of hydrogen being maintained in order to remove the water vapour' formed as a result of the reactions:

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

This paper covers the salient features of the occurrence and mining of sheet mica in the United States and the preparation of mica for market; presents the results of a study of the physical properties of domestic and foreign micas, which the author hopes may he of interest to every mica user, as it definitely answers many questions as to the suitability of various minas for particular purposes; and discusses mica-trade conditions and the future outlook for the domestic mica industry. Treated effluent from the Clean Water Coalition (CWC) member agencies is currently discharged at an annual average rate of 6,570 l/s into the Las Vegas Wash, and is increasing annually. As the effluent flow increases, the nutrient loading of the treated effluent will approach the maximum limits allowed under the current regulations. To manage this flow while maintaining water quality in Lake Mead, the CWC is implementing a 44-km-long conveyance system. This paper discusses the geological and geotechnical aspects of the 13.4-km-long tunneled section through the River Mountains and their effect on design. The tunnel alignment traverses a heterogeneous package of volcanic and sedimentary rocks exhibiting widely variable rock conditions.

"INTRODUCTION Although the presence of sulfur causes many petroleum’s to be classified as ""low-grade"" because of the difficulties encountered in manufacturing products to meet rigid specifications, the petroleum industry is finding it necessary to use such crude oils to satisfy present needs. As the demand for petroleum products increases, and available reserves diminish, this utilization of high-sulfur crude oils will be accentuated. Programs designed to supplement the supplies of fuel available from petroleum by the manufacture of synthetic fuel from natural gas, shale oil, and coal are in progress. Such fuels, especially shale oil and, less so, oil from the hydrogenation of coal, also contain sulfur compounds which must be effectively removed. Thus, the need for fundamental research on the sulfur compounds that may be expected in petroleum and allied products is becoming greater as the industry is forced to call upon all available resources to meet the demand for petroleum products. In recognition of this need, the Bureau of Mines has inaugurated a long-range program assigned to furnish fundamental data concerning the presence, characteristics, and effects of sulfur compounds in petroleum and its products."

Anchored steel pipe piles are being used more frequently in British Columbia for shoreline projects such as public ferries, cruise ship docks, containership terminals and locally in the expansion of the Vancouver waterfront convention center. While a 36? diameter driven pile may provide adequate compression loads it will not always achieve enough penetration to provide the required tension loading. That is why bundles of threaded anchors or strands are drilled through the center, past the pile tip, and anchored into the underlying strata. Drilling up to 250 feet deep through the piles in variable water bearing strata presents challenges. Southwest Contacting Ltd. (SWC) recently completed the three largest anchored pile projects in BC; Vancouver Port and Convention Center Expansion, Vanterm Container Terminal and the new Prince Rupert Cruise Ship Terminal. This paper will present the separate challenges encountered drilling the anchors. At Prince Rupert, the recently completed Northland Cruise Ship Dock ultimately required a cased system to drill and install triple thread bar anchors. When 200 foot long steel pipe piling was unable to penetrate the highly fractured gneiss/schist bedrock to obtain a seal and consolidation grouting was unsuccessful, a modified cased system was advanced deep enough into the rock to eventually seal. The 3-#20 bars were changed to 12-strands since the bars wouldn?t fit through the smaller cased hole. The options were limited because each dolphin only had enough room for a small hydraulic drill rig that wouldn?t have the power to fully case the holes. The Canada Place Pier Extension in Vancouver?s Harbor led to the development of an innovative tip design used later at Vanterm. The 36? diameter steel pipe piles were driven closed end but modified to permit drilling through a concrete plug at the base. The driving of the piles at Canada Place often knocked out the plug so we were faced with 50 feet of sand up inside the pile when the drilling started. This led to discussions on how to safely remove the sand, solidify the tip, and continue drilling to get past the tip without undermining the pile. Finally, Vanterm Berth Extension was completed with a unique drilling system because the pile tips stopped in hydraulic sands, as opposed to the native till. We were faced with advancing the casing to the till without undermining the base of the pile. With 100 psi water pressure at the pile base after we broke through the concrete plug, the trick was to prevent charging the sand with our 250 psi air which liquefies it and forced it up our drill casing. And of course, it has to happen just before Christmas holidays!
