Recently basic concepts of semiconductor electrochemistry and solid-state electronic structure theory have been applied to the dissolution of mineral electrodes. In this paper, fundamental aspects of semiconductor electro- chemistry and interfacial charge-transfer processes are reviewed. Information regarding the electronic and semiconductor properties of chalcopyrite is summarized. The electrochemical response of chalcopyrite in acidic solution is analyzed in terms of initial dissolution processes. The initial charge- transfer reaction involves the consumption of holes. It has been shorn that Fermi level pinning is consistent with observed electrochemical and dissolution behavior. Semiconductor electrochemistry has proved helpful in explaining the formation of intermediate surface films produced during the initial stages of chalcopyrite dissolution

"While bioleaching of pyrite concentrates has been successfully used in industry to liberate gold from the sulphide matrix for subsequent cyanidation, the same technology cannot be recommended for leaching chalcopyrite concentrates for copper recovery. It will be shown to be uneconomical and cannot compete with pressure leaching technology. Data on the pilot plants that were constructed for this purpose and were shut down will be given.INTRODUCTIONBacterial leaching has been successfully applied for heap leaching of low-grade copper ores (Habashi, 1978, 1999). One of the major operations is that at Bingham in Utah (Figure 1). The leach solution collected at the bottom of the heap is extracted by organic solvents and the strip solution is electrolyzed to get high purity copper. The process was extended to treat auriferous pyrite concentrates to liberate gold and render it amenable to cyanidation by a process known as BIOX (Marsden & House, 2006; Lunt & Briggs, 2005).BIOX plants currently or recently in operation are the following:??Ashanti Goldfields Company, Ghana. Designed with an initial capacity of treating 720 tonnes of concentrate per day, the Sansu plant has since been expanded and currently has four modules processing 960 tonnes per day in all. It is by far the largest biooxidation plant in the world. The capital cost of the plant totalled US $25 million (1994 terms) and the operating cost is currently US $17/tonne milled.??Fairview, South Africa. The plant at the Fairview mine in Barberton, which was the initial pilot plant, has been fully operational since 1986. It was originally designed to treat 10 tonnes/day of concentrate but with the success of the project this has been increased to 55 tonnes per day. With the purchase of Fairview by Avgold’s Eastern Transvaal Consolidated, Avgold concluded a licensing agreement with Gold Fields, formerly known as Gencor, entitling it to use the BIOX technology to treat itsconcentrate.??Saõ Bento, Brazil. A BIOX plant was recently in operation in Brazil at the Saõ Bento Mine where a pressure oxidation circuit is used to treat the refractory flotation concentrate. This plant has confirmed the viability of combining bio-oxidation with pressure oxidation as a cost-effective method ofincreasing capacity at an existing oxidation plant.??Wiluna, Australia. The plant at Wiluna Gold Mine, Western Australia, was commissioned in 1993. Although originally designed to treat 115 tonnes per day of concentrate this has subsequently been increased to 158.??Other plants at Tamboraque in Peru, Harbour Lights and at Youanami in Australia have been commissioned recently."

Numerous terms are used for rocks containing calcium carbonate so that confusion frequently occurs in the common language. Chalk and marble are two extremes among a wide variety of carbonate rocks including limestones, marls, travertine and other calcareous materials. We will deal mainly with the purest types of natural calcium carbonates which are widely used today in many industrial applications.

Chalk is a natural calcium carbonate occurring as the remains of soft, friable, minute marine organisms. Whiting can be either finely ground calcium carbonate prepared from chalk, marble, or limestone or the product obtained by chemical precipitation from a solution or suspension containing lime. Until relatively recently, whiting made from limestone was termed "whiting substitute," but it is now usually designated as limestone whiting. Precipitated calcium carbonate, sometimes called "precipitated whiting" or "precipitated chalk," is a finely divided calcium carbonate product obtained by chemical precipitation from a solution or suspension containing lime. Considerable quantities of precipitated calcium carbonates are produced from many chemical processes. Naturally occurring calcium carbonate in a variety of crystalline forms and in all degrees of chemical purity forms a substantial part of the earth's crust. Exactly where a chalk grades into a marl or calcareous shale through increase of clay or silt or into a hard limestone through consolidation and crystallization is difficult to determine because no rigid specifications have been promulgated for classifying them. Composition and Properties Once considered to be amorphous, chalk was later found to be cryptocrystalline. In the pure state it consists entirely of CaCO3, but many deposits are impure. When impurities are removed and the material is reduced to a finely divided state, it is known as chalk whiting. Much confusion attends the use of the term "chalk" as well as the classification of whiting materials. For instance, blackboard chalk is not necessarily chalk but is sometimes plaster of paris or a form of talc. Colored "chalks" may be true chalk colored and compressed with a binder but are probably such materials as hematite, clays, or carbonaceous matter. The term whiting was applied exclusively to the product derived from true chalk before World War I. Chalk imports were difficult to acquire during World War I, and whiting substitutes, a term applied to the products derived from natural rock deposits and precipitated calcium carbonate, were introduced. Substitute whitings were not acceptable at first, but it was found that blending true chalk with substitutes often created an improved product; eventually by selection of limestone and finer grinding, products not only acceptable, but for some uses superior to chalk whiting, were developed. Gradually the term "substitute" was dropped because chalk whiting had lost its importance, being largely supplanted in the United States by other whiting materials. Whiting is now made in ever-increasing quantities from limestone, marble, dolomite, marls, vein calcite, oyster-shell, as well as primary and byproduct precipitated calcium carbonates. Distribution of Chalk Europe-In England, France, Belgium, Denmark, and other European countries highpurity chalk occurs in extensive beds. CHALK is soft, pulverulent limestone formed from calcareous remains of microscopic organisms. Whiting is the powder made by the fine- grinding of limestone. Although European chalk dominated the early American market and is still shipped to the eastern and western seaboards, the domestic producer, by new technical processing, improved equipment, and proper selection and mixing of raw materials has shown that the United States can be independent of foreign sources. DISTRIBUTION European Chalk-Outcrops of Cretaceous chalk are found in the area roughly bounded by Antrim, Ireland, on the east, East Prussia on the west, Sweden and Scotland on the north, and Nice, France, on the south. Commercial chalk is mined from the chalk cliffs between Dover and Hull, England; from deposits near Mons, in the Departments of Pas de Calais and Nord in northern France; and from similar de- posits in Denmark and Belgium. United States-Some grade of limestone is found in every state of the Union, but true chalk of Cretaceous age is limited to three large areas in the central and southern states. Niobrara (Cretaceous) chalk outcrops are found as a narrow band encircling the Black Hills in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska, and in much larger exposures in southeastern South Dakota, eastern Nebraska, and western Kansas. A third chalk belt extends from west central Arkansas into Oklahoma and connects with the Austin beds, which almost cross Texas. In the southeastern states, the Selma chalk extends from western Tennessee south through northern Mississippi and turns east across central Alabama. It became accepted that employees had the right to "a safe and healthful workplace". In this paper, the author would like to point out with figures that the building industry is one of the key industrial sectors of the national economy in China. And in the coming 15 years, the output of building construction will not in the least decrease, but increase. The requirements for building standards, quality, functions as well as physical environment will also be higher along with the incessant development of the national economy and the gradual raising of people's living standard. China is a country with a vast territory and a great, variety of physical characteristics. The topographic and engineering geotechnical conditions are complex and varies considerably from place to place. Although, in recent years, encouraging progress has been made in building construction, there still exist many problems unsolved or even not explored at all, which we have to tackle in the future design and construction of foundations. Also reviewed in this paper are the achievements attained in the past thirty odd years and the challenge we will face in the foundation engineering field in China.

The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

Successful mineral exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. Contrary to what the environmental lobby would have the world believe, the industry is replacing the metals it is extracting. The reserve base has not changed significantly in 20 years (Fig. 1.) Mineral exploration is a research activity. First there is the idea, the vision or the intuitive thought. The experiments follow. These involve repeated phases of data gathering, data interpretation and concept testing through drilling. For many companies, exploration is the main investment in scientific research. Each mineral exploration experiment may involve years of costly work. Despite the improving tools of science and technology, the investment remains high-risk. Only the promise of high rewards, or desire to survive as a mining company, will stimulate the necessary commitment and level of investment. Confidence that an economic return can be achieved, confidence in the science and technology being applied and confidence in the people involved are the foundations upon which successful mineral exploration is built (Woodall, 1984). The challenges facing the explorationist in the 1990s fall into two categories: - the challenge to make the activity economic; and - the challenge to make the activity socially and, therefore, politically acceptable.

Increasingly pelletizing discs are used for the recycling of dust and sludge. The applied pellet feed is highly variable, for example in terms of chemical composition, grain size distribution and raw density. These raw materials related factors lead to a destabilized pelletizing process, which initially must be homogenized through special mixtures, as well as the use of binders or additives. There are many possibilities to reach stringent restriction of material related target factors. On the one hand it is helpful to be flexible by changing the process parameters of the pelletizing disc. On the other hand, it is necessary to use a material-binder-formulation, which leads to a highly stable pelletizing process. The paper deals with an example of the use of agglomerating device, pelletizing disc, to prepare different dusts and sludges for material recycling. These dusts und sludges are mostly generated in metallurgical processes, e.g. sinterplant, blast furnace and steelworks.

"High tonnage, low grade gold mines such as Omai’s afford economies of scale that are unto their own insufficient to sustain profitability at today’s depressed gold price. Complimenting profitability objectives is the perpetual challenge to reduce operating costs and optimize unit operating efficiencies while being ever vigilant of issues such as environmental control.Key to achieving these objectives at Omai are throughput and availability gains, gold recovery improvements, cost cutting, a skilled workforce and reliable power generation.This paper attempts a cursory review of startup-to-date plant performance advances and future performance-driven objectives.INTRODUCTIONCommercial gold production at Omai commenced in January 1993 with annual output climbing to 250,000 opy by the end of 1994. A mill expansion completed in August 1996 increased gold production to 340,000 opy by the end of 1997. Current milling capacity is 20,000 in tpd (nom.) with actual capacity exceeding 24,000 mtpd on occasion depending on ore size and competency. Mill feed consists of hardrock (andesite, quartz diorite and rhyolite) and softrock (saprolite, laterite) at a nominal ratio of 70:30, respectively. Present day average weighted grade of the feed is 1.4 g/t gold.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONPrimary crushing, ore handling and the original 12,000 mtpd hard and soft rock SABC mill, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘A’, remains essentially as documented by Konigsmann (1 994) complete with poststartup modifications. The mill expansion, hereafter referred to as Mill ‘B’, features an 8000 mtpd hard rock SABC grinding circuit similar in configuration to Mill ‘A’ and differing only in equipment size. Mill ‘B’ includes a 9000 H.P.,reversible variable speed , single pinion drive, 32 ft. x 15 ft. SAG inill , a 7 ft. short head pebble crusher and two parallel 5400 H.P., 16.5 ft. x 30 ft. ball mills with dedicated cyclone packs consisting of D26 hydrocyclones."

Tantalum is an important minor metal for the production of high performance capacitors. Approximately 60% of the annual tantalum production is used in this application. Despite its high price of 298 US$/kg (average price 2010–2014), at the moment, no recycling from end-of-life products takes place. In the established recycling processes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), tantalum is lost in the slags of copper smelting, where it is highly diluted. An economic recovery is not possible at that point. Although tantalum must therefore be extracted from the WEEE stream before it enters smelting, no industrial recycling processes exist. The main reasons are its low concentration in the WEEE stream, lack of information about tantalum bearing devices, technical difficulties of extraction, and conflicts of interests regarding the recycling of other valuable metals in WEEE. In this paper, the results of a cooperation research project are presented. The aforementioned challenges are addressed and a novel tantalum recycling process is developed. Small pilot scale experiments show that a mechanical processing route can produce marketable tantalum-concentrates of 30% tantalum with yields between 60 and 70%. This is reached through a manual pre-sorting of potentially tantalum bearing products followed by a combination of an optimized comminution, sieving, air classifying, eddy-current (EC), and two stage magnetic separation. Key to the implementation of this process was a detailed survey of the tantalum concentrations in different products carried out by the industrial partner.

In September 2005, after 30 years experiencing in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system, Antam entered the new era in operating an ESF, after completely modernized its ESF No. 2 from a falling water film shell cooling system to a copper cooling system. Further, in the beginning of 2007, Ferronickel plant No. 3, where its ESF also uses copper coolers, was successfully commissioned. By operating an ESF using a copper cooling technology, Antam has to face some challenges to establish the operation stability. Besides that, the chances to maximize the furnace efficiency are greatly opened. The shielded-arc mode of electrode tip is selected to operate an ESF under relatively high furnace power to produce metal having tap temperature below 1500? and slag having tap temperature below 1600?. It leads to electric current unbalance. Further, operating an ESF using a copper cooler system under high voltage as consequence of the furnace power raise increases metal and slag tap temperature. This condition damages furnace integrity fast. Besides that, relatively high metal temperature increases its pressure during metal tapping. It leads to failure in closing the metal tap hole. The main different ways in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system and a copper cooling system lie in the electrode tip mode, the water specification used for cooler, metal tap block maintenance and allowed metal & slag level in furnace. Since a copper cooler system allows an ESF to be operated by consuming nickel ore having ratio Fe / Ni up to eight and producing slag having relatively high Fe content in slag, an undesirable silicon reversion phenomenon becomes an obstacle in reaching the operation stability. A copper cooler technology lets Antam to take a chance to increase its capacity. Modernizing the ESF No.2 had increased its furnace power from 17 MWh to 25 MWh. Meanwhile the ESF No. 3 can be operated up to 42 MWh. This technology allows an ESF to be operated under relatively high furnace power above 25 MWh safely as well as prolong the campaign life of ESF brick. Further, lowering ESF power consumption, extending the limitation of ratio S/M in nickel ore consumed and adjusting Ni grade in ferronickel product can be gained by applying this technology.

For 30 years, mining operations worldwide have used diesel-powered mobile machinery to mechanize the mining process. South African diamond mines and some US coal mines have 15 years of experience with this type of equipment. During the past eight years, most of the new gold production from underground mines outside of South Africa has been mined by bulk methods using diesel-powered machinery. The underground mining industry, then, has secured and institutionalized the larger benefits created by a technology that was new to mining engineers in the early 1960s. The state of mechanized diesel-powered underground mining is now mature. To survive, though, mine operators -regardless of commodity mined and position in the commodity cycle-must maximize the benefits of diesel technology. The benefits gained in the next seven to 10 years will be realized by tweaking this component, fine tuning that piece of machinery and demanding optimum use of the technology. Manufacturers of diesel-powered machinery share the condition of maturity with their customers. Larger scale and easy market development have occurred. Much has been made of the potential size of the US coal segment as well as markets in China and the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). Indeed, opportunities do exist in these regions. However, these market development opportunities do not imply the market size trend line remains unchanged. They simply mean the potential market size is within reach. In fact, the market size for the product is shrinking.

Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCC) is part of the Los Angeles metro expansion project under construction which adds three new stations into the system. PB&A was responsible for the design of the support of excavation (SOE) systems for two stations, 2nd/Broadway and 2nd/Hope, in RCC. In this paper, challenges and lesson learned from SOE design of 2nd/Broadway station with a main focus on underpinning design are discussed. 2nd/Broadway station required to cut and cover excavation of 500 ft long by almost 100 ft deep, underneath 2nd Street. SOE systems consisting of drilled soldier beams with tiebacks and/or struts. The main challenge in 2nd/Broadway station was to underpin the LA Times building which was partially protruded into the station. A chellenging underpinning system consisted of concrete panels and ground anchors was designed to support the building surcharge and prevent settlement. The underpinning system was designed based on METRO design criteria and the deflection was evaluated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) program, PLAXIS 2D. A maximum deflection of 0.4 inches was calculated to occur at the top of the underpinning system. Data from settlement and tilt sensors showed minimal movements which aligned with PLAXIS outputs. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCC) is Los Angeles Metro’s ambitious Light Rail Project. It runs under the City’s main thoroughfares, Flower and 2nd Streets, and when complete will alleviate traffic and parking congestion in downtown Los Angeles. The Regional Connector will connect thousands of residents living in the bedroom communities of the Inland Empire and Long Beach to their jobs Downtown. The rail line will serve 1.9 miles, using the $1.756 Billion budget to construct the underground rail line, including 3 new stations, at 2nd & Hope Street, 2nd & Broadway, and 1st St. & Central Ave (Fig. 1).

The US Army Corps of Engineers KY Lock Project in western Kentucky presented the blasters and vibration consultants with a set of unique challenges. The blasters on this project were faced with difficult geology and joint set orientation and sequencing of blasts opposite from what the explosive engineer/blasting specialist had recommended. Combining these issues with strict vibration and air overpressure specifications, blasting as close as 7 feet (2.1 meters) from a new lock wall, site topography that influenced the air overpressure, limitations on seismograph geophone placement that led to anomalies in seismograph recordings; surprising lessons were learned by everyone involved in the project and it is the authors’ goal to share this valuable information with everyone in the blasting industry.

The Cooljarloo North Mine has been shaped not only by operational and processing challenges, but by climatic and economic factors. This paper outlines some of these challenges and discusses how the operating strategy has been altered over time to mitigate the impacts.Since commissioning the wet concentrator in 1999, there have been many typical operational challenges to maximising valuable heavy mineral (VHM) recovery. These include: varying in pit feed grades, different slimes types and volumes, sizing extremes between VHM and trash minerals and decreased equipment reliability handling rocky ore. These issues were successfully mitigated by: in pit extraction strategies, upgrade of the de-sliming circuit, thickener modifications and flocculent changes, installing upgraded and additional spiral capacity, and various Feed Preparation Plant screening initiatives. Combined with the ingenuity, persistence and patience of the operating team, VHM recovery >95 per cent has been achieved.However, typical processing challenges have not been the only hurdles. Reduced rainfall and water availability has necessitated the strategic co-disposal of tailings and slime to increase the speed of water recovery: groundwater abstraction and water storage strategies have also been altered. With an observed reduction in the speed and magnitude of groundwater recharge, overburden backfill scheduling has become a priority mine planning function.Combined with the above challenges, the prevailing foreign exchange rate and mineral product prices have impacted profitability. At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, major changes to the operating strategy were made to maintain a viable dry mining operation in 2010. Working with the mining contractor the existing scraper and semi-fixed Feed Preparation Plant set up was replaced with a movable in pit dozer trap facility. The end result of changes to the mining method and primary screening was a ten per cent reduction in unit costs. This article will elaborate on some of the above mentioned challenges and successes achieved over the past ten years of operating the Cooljarloo North Mine.

In the field of pyrometallurgy, the presence of multiple molten phases with distinct chemical compositions, such as slags, mattes, speiss liquids, metals and molten salts, is a well-known phenomenon. These phases exhibit strongly non-ideal solution behaviour and are mutually miscible to varying degrees. To describe these complex molten liquids, the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM) has proven effective and has been applied to numerous binary, ternary and several higher-order multicomponent systems related to pyrometallurgy. In recent decades, the complexity of high-temperature processes has escalated due to increased impurity concentrations in primary ores, the incorporation of recycled consumer products and the integration of metallurgical plants through by-product and waste exchanges. To address these issues, PYROSEARCH laboratory has been developing large 20-component thermodynamic database using a generalised CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) methodology integrated with experimental investigations. Over the past decade, strategic decisions were made balancing the ability to generate experimental data, prediction power, accuracy, stability of calculations, as well as computational time, which are discussed in the paper. Examples provided for issues of >3 liquid immiscibility, non-ionic behaviour and exaggerated ‘sharp’ enthalpies of mixing in silicate slags, dealing with multiple oxidation states, as well as comparative analysis of pair and quadruplet approximation in MQM.

Constructed stream diversions are a common element of mine sites across Australia. A review of constructed stream diversion performance in the Bowen Basin funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) in 1999 found over 80 per cent of constructed stream diversions failed to meet regulator and operator expectations. Since that time, improvements have been made in the assessment, design, monitoring and management of constructed stream diversions. Fundamental to these improvements has been the development of a better understanding of the regional stream systems and efforts to replicate the natural stream processes in the function and operation of constructed stream diversions.This paper discusses the history of constructed stream diversions through the Bowen Basin in central Queensland recorded in the outcomes of a series of ACARP funded research projects. Further, the paper reports on the outcomes of a current ACARP funded project that has reviewed the success or otherwise of constructed stream diversions in the region. The assessment has compared the performance of diversions that have been designed to replicate and provide for ongoing stream geomorphic processes with those diversions that were designed and built prior to the development of these design improvements.
