"The CompanyCardinal River Coals is jointly owned by Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidated Coal Company of Canada (Consol). The Luscar mine is operated by Luscar Ltd. and is located 40 km south of Hinton near Cadomin, Alberta (Fig. 1). The plant sits on the old townsite of Luscar, Alberta, which was founded in order to develop the coal in 1912 (Fig. 2). Initially, the coal was mined by Luscar Ltd. for heating and steam generation and used quite heavily by the railways for their steam locomotives. In 1955, the mine was decommissioned as the demand for coal for tl1ese purposes had dropped off. In 1969, the mine was re-established by Cardinal River to provide metallurgical coking coal for its customers in Japan. The coal is mined from the 13m thick Jewel Seam by open pit methods at a 10 to 1 stripping ratio. The run-of-mine coal is then cleaned to meet customer demands.The PlantThe clean coal preparation facilities at Cardinal River were extended in 1980 in order to increase the feed rate from 450 t/h to 800 t/h. The extension is a separate plant which can be operated on its own or in parallel with the old plant. In addition, modifications have been made to the fine coal circuit (hydrocyclones added), the coarse refuse circuit, (refuse bucks replaced by a refuse conveyor which backfills a pit), and the fine refuse circuit (solid bowl refuse centrifuges, refuse classifying cyclones, and hydra-rake thickener no longer utilized) since the plant was built in 1969. The plant production of 3 M t per year with a yield of 78% is achieved by first screening and breaking the run-of-mine material to a top size of 1 ½ in. The feed is then slurried, sized, and processed in three different washing circuits. The washed coal is mechanically dewatered, thermally dried, and then stored in a 14 500 t capacity silo or on a 300 000 t stockpile. The fine refuse is thickened and pumped to the same pit to which the coarse refuse is being conveyed"

"AbstractThe Cardium formation of northeastern British •Columbia •contains an erosional unconformity that becomes progressively more severe northward until, •at Liard river, the stratigraphic hiatus eliminates the underlying Lower •Cardium sandstone, the Kaskapau formation, and the upper Dunvegan sandstones. The area of unconformity roughly coincides with the distribution of the continental facies of the earlier Dunvegan formation. Along Wapiti river, the zone fossil Scaphites ventricosus Meek and Hayden is found in the Bad-heart member of the overlying Wapiabi shale; Scaphites :preventricosus. Cobban marks the base of the Wapiabi shale; Scaphites cf. corvensis •Cobban is found in the middle shale member of the •Cardium formation. The log of the Red-Willow No. 1 well shows close similarity to the outcrop sections south of Wapiti river. The Cardium formation is mainly late Turonian in age. Two other pre-Cardium Turonian sands of north-eastern British Columbia are named the Wartenbe and Tuskoola sands.IntroductionTHE Upper Cretaceous Cardium (Bighorn) sandstone formation of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia carries within its formational limits an erosional unconformity. The unconformity decreases to the southeast, becoming in immediate shoreline regions, now under the plains, a minor diastem. Such diastems, or stratigraphic intervals of non-deposition, occurring in the shallow unda-zone are paralleled in the deeper portions of the unda-zone by the phenomena of sub-aqueous winnowing. '.This winnowing and re-working •at critical depths creates sand areas with porosity."

Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

To OBTAIN the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the 'chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not, adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid-grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled-once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4m.), of hole drilled. Grease-guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium ( No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into- the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of, hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill -is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wicking, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at. least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia may be used.

James Douglas will long be remembered as a distinguished mining engineer and metallurgist, as a scientist with broad vision, as an executive whose understanding of practical problems coupled with his knowledge of men and affairs enabled him to weld together great mining interests and to their service build railroads and bring power. More, he will be recalled as a philosopher and a writer of charm, a historian of no mean order, and one whose catholic tastes and enthusiasms led him into the fields of education, medicine and theology. His aim was to possess that which he considered made life worth while—friends and effectiveness in whatever task he undertook. In this aim he was successful to a degree exceeded by few, as thousands of his friends and associates could and can testify. Dr. Douglas was born on November 4,1837, at Quebec, Canada. His father, James Douglas, Sr., was a prominent physician and the leading surgeon of Canada. He also established the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion, the Quebec Lunatic Asylum, to which he devoted his services for years; The son followed in the footsteps of his father and studied medicine, not only in Canada but also in Scotland and in Germany. He entered the University of Edinburgh in 1855 but after two years at that institution returned to Canada and was graduated from Queens university at Kingston, Ontario, .with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Later he went to Lava1 University, Quebec, and subsequently became professor of chemistry at Morrin College, Quebec. After he was graduated—at the time he considered his formal education completed—he traveled with his father in Europe and in the Orient; visiting Egypt, being especially interested in that country, several times. They gathered together an important archaeological collection which later was donated by them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the city of New York. James Douglas was also greatly interested in photography, a hobby in which he made use of his chemical knowledge. The writer can remember distinctly the descriptions he gave more than forty years ago in Arizona of the difficulties he encountered with the old wet photographic plates, especially while traveling in Egypt, when he prepared and used his own chemicals. Introduction This paper attempts to describe the characteristics of the industrial minerals segment of the minerals industry that make it different from the other segments. Also described are the trends, strengths, and shortcomings in the industrial minerals segment. This may help professionals in the minerals industry determine if there is a place for them in industrial minerals. Industry Overview It is difficult to generalize when describing the industrial minerals industry. Some products, such as cement and potash, are produced exclusively by large, well capitalized and technically sophisticated companies. Others, such as sand and gravel, are generally produced by small, family-owned companies operating on a shoestring budget. Still other products, such as feldspar, are produced by both types of companies. Not only are the companies vastly different, the products and marketing of their products are also different. Industrial mineral products are sold based on their physical characteristics (abrasives), or their chemical characteristics (trona), or both (glass sand). Marketing can be direct by the producing plant, a corporate office handling products form several plants, or through distributors. The geologic, mining, and processing skills needed can be minimal or sophisticated. There can even be large differences in the technical skills needed in two plants producing the same product. One feldspar producer may only need to mine and grind his ore, while another may use a delicate flotation process. One easy generalization is that there are industrial mineral operations in all geographic locations. A second is that industrial minerals offers more opportunities to entrepreneurs than the metals field because of the variety in the sizes and types of operations. Industry Growth Industrial minerals must be considered a mature industry. Consequently, little exciting growth can be expected. Over the past 30 years, industry sales have grown at a rate of 6.2%, compared to a 6.7% growth rate of the GNP (Kliff, 1978). A 3.8% growth rate has been forecast for the remainder of this century. The fortunes of those plants producing a product for local consumption will depend on the prosperity of the local economy. The fortunes of those plants that sell into the national market will depend on their competitiveness in their industry. Major industrial mineral products are shown in Table 1. The first three commodities account for 66% of the industrial minerals market. Typically, deposits of stone, sand and gravel, and the limestone, silica, and clay needed for cement are easy to find and mine. Role of Mining Engineers and Geologists Because a sophisticated techcical knowledge of geology or mining is not required, very few geologists and mining engineers are employed in industrial minerals. Geologists working for these companies function less as geologists than managers and executives dealing with permitting and land acquisition. Likewise, mining is done mostly by open-pit methods. It is generally supervised by an individual experienced in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, not a mining engineer trained in rock mechanics or computer methods of mine planning. What of the geologists and mining engineers employed by the industrial minerals industry? Many gained their positions as a result of their experience dealing with the regulatory agencies that control the operations of all mines and mills. Their technical expertise in geology or mining becomes only a side benefit. In the center of Helsinki - capital of Finland - extensive blasting operations were carried out during the years 1982 - 84. At the corner of the streets Mannerheimintie and Simonkatu - in the Forum block - about 125,000 cu.m. of rock were blasted to give place for a new modern shopping centre (Fig. 1). Added to this amount of rock another 10,000 cu.m. were blasted for a transport tunnel to an adjacent underground bombshelter (Fig.2) which is to be used as a parking place in peace-time. The blasting work was demanding and difficult to carry out due to old buildings surrounding the work-site as well as computers and other sensitive equipment installed in some of them.

Surface mine operators often gamble that the savings gained from elimination of haul-road subbase preparation will offset any potential loss in production due to deteriorating roads. According to the authors of a manual on haul-road construction, this practice yields results that are almost always undesirable. The lack of suitable weight-bearing material under the road surface permits extensive rutting, sinkage, and overall deterioration of the roadway, and a great deal of maintenance work will be needed to keep the road usable. In addition, say Walter W. Kaufman of Skelly and Loy, and James C. Ault, USBM Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, adverse road conditions pose a serious threat to vehicular controllability and create unsafe haulage road segments.

En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala el uso del equipo “Fighter Bull" para introducir las barras al molino en el menor tiempo posible. El diseño de este equipo se desarrolló en los Talleres de Maestranza de Toquepala de nuestra empresa Southern Peru Copper Corporation y permite reducir en gran porcentaje las pérdidas de producción de molienda de mineral y no produce riesgos de accidentes de accidentes para los trabajadores.

"The gold deposits of the Caribou mine are representative of those of the Province of Nova Scotia as a whole. The ore shoots within the deposits, in common with those elsewhere within the Province, are associated usually with interruptions or irregularities in the broader and uniform fold structures. The structural factors localizing ore deposition as applied more specifically to the Caribou mine are demonstrated chiefly by the close relationship of the two principal ore shoots, known as the main orebody and the 'high-grade' vein, with a pitching drag fold developed in the southeast limb of the major northeast-southwest trending anticlinal fold or elongated dome that constitutes the primary structural feature of the Caribou gold district. It is of interest to note that the evidence indicates that this drag fold, in common with other folds subsidiary to the primary fold, formed as a result of movement similar in nature to that which caused the primary fold itself. Presumably, therefore, these folds are coincident in time.The property described here as the Caribou mine is an amalgamation of two adjacent properties formerly known as the Ross and the Nova Scotia Gold, but which since 1934 have been controlled and operated as a unit by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Caribou mine is situated in the Caribou gold district about 45 miles to the northeast of the city of Halifax and about 6 miles to the north of the Moose River gold district.The history of mining at Caribou dates back to 1867. The first recorded gold production is for 1869. From 1869 to 1933 the gold produced from the mines of the Caribou district aggregated 47,249 oz. from 93,234 tons of ore treated. The grade of the ore on the basis of the gold actually recovered from the district would thus average 72 oz. gold a ton, which, as will be noted from the following, is precisely the grade of the ore treated from the Caribou mine during operations by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. These operations commenced in September, 1934, and milling on a commercial basis was under way during 1938. Since that time production, apart from a short period in 1945 during which efforts were concentrated on development work, was continuous to early in 1947, when the mine closed down owing to exhaustion of the known orebodies. Gold produced from the Caribou mine by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company from September, 1934, to the close of 1946 aggregated 43,205 oz. from 90,754 tons of ore milled; the grade of ore treated averaged 0.50 oz. gold a ton. The indicated average grade of O.S oz. gold a ton for the ore of the Caribou district throughout its mining history ranks somewhat higher than the 0.37 oz. a ton average for the ore milled to date from the several gold districts throughout the Province as a whole according to the production statistics of the Provincial Department of Mines."

"The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

THE year 1940 was an important one in the life of Carl Swartz. At the annual Institute meeting in February of that year, he was inducted into the office of Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Metals Division, and a few months later he assumed another and possibly even more important responsibility-he became the son-in-law of Robert H. Leach, genial vice-president of Handy and Harman, who had just ended his term as Chairman of the Division. The young man who took on this dual obligation in 1940, and who is now commander-in-chief of I.M.D., was born near Danville, Ill., and graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1923. (Ed. note: It's a small world. About the time Carl was a freshman in high school at Danville, or slightly before, the University of Illinois students held beer parties in Danville's hotel. We know; we were there.) Continuing his education at another of our fine Middle-Western colleges, Carl received his Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin and his Ph.D. from the same school in 1926. For the next nine years he worked in that splendid training school for non-ferrous metallurgists-the research laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co., at Barber, N. J., leaving there in 1935 to take the position of metallurgist of the Cleveland Graphite Bronze Co. in Cleveland, where he is still working (in a modern, air-conditioned office and laboratory) today.

Located 19 km (12 miles) north of the Carlin gold mine and 43 km (27 miles) north of Carlin, Nevada, is Carlin Gold Mining Company's Bootstrap mine. This deposit is similar in character to the Carlin ore, except it occurs in the upper plate formation of the Roberts thrust fault rather than in the lower plate rocks. The deposit was discovered over 50 years ago and operated on a small scale in the early 1960s using vat cyanide leaching. Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the property in 1967, and from an open pit mined 650,000 mt (717,000 st) of ore which was trucked to the Carlin conventional cyanide plant. (See Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice by F. W. McQuiston, Jr. and R. S. Shoemaker, Society of Mining Engineers, AIME, 1975. ) With the same grade of ore, the gold recovery by conventional methods is somewhat lower than that of the Carlin ore, even with a finer grind. Leaching tests were first conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1968; and in 1971, ‘72, Carlin conducted extensive cyanidation investigations by bottle testing, simulated heap leaching in tall columns, and small scale pad heap leaches. Gold extractions ranged from 55% to 95% with low reagent consumptions. In 1974, a 545 mt (600 st) heap leach test was made at Carlin on pit-run low-grade material assaying 1.37 g per mt (0.04 oz per st). In a six week period the extraction of gold was 47.57'0. Carlin uses atomic absorption analyses on cyanide leach liquors to determine potential leach ore grade rather than fire assaying because it gives a more practical assessment of leach recovery than does fire assaying, which accounts for the total gold content. Before open-pit mining was started, plans were made to heap leach, the ore at Bootstrap which was too low grade for transport to Carlin. The topsoil outside of the designed pit area overlaid ancient lakebed clays which were found suitable for compaction to form an impervious base on which the dumps to be leached could be placed. By using the cost of truck haulage and milling at the Carlin plant and the price of gold 'at that time, a cutoff grade was established which resulted in the gold content of the first 150,000 mt (165,000 st) of the heap leaching ore being 1.51 g per mt (0.044 oz per st). An additional 500,000 mt (552,000 st) of lower grade material, assaying 0.96 g per mt (0.028 oz per st), is available for leaching as economics permit.

The Carlin gold deposit is located in northeastern Nevada about thirty-five miles by road from the town of Elko. Following the staking of six square miles 'of ground, a drilling program outlined a fine ore body mineable by open pitting. The resulting mine turned out to be the largest open-pit gold operation in the world, until the Rosario Pueblo Viejo operation was started in 1975. Because of the high profitability forecast at the then $35 gold price, construction of a 2000 stpd mill was commenced on a crash program and was completed for Newmont Mining Corporation by Bechtel Corporation in ten months. Production was started in early 1965. The gold mineralization occurs in marine-type sediments, chiefly silt- stones and limey shales, and the ore characteristics make for a difficult materials-handling problem. At 5% to 6% moisture the ore is dusty during crushing, but even a light rain or snowfall virtually turns the material into a slurry. Crushing this sticky ore below 314 in. (19 mm) in the dry season and 1 in. (25.4 m) during the winter is extremely difficult and leads to problems with conveyors, chutes, and fine ore storage. The initial flowsheet for Carlin's crushing plant used a 5 ft by 22 ft (1.52 m by 6. 7 m) vibrating feeder -grizzly under the 60 -ton dump pocket for feeding the 42 in. by 48 in. (1067 mm by 1220 mm) single toggle jaw crusher and a 5 ½ ft (1.52 m) standard cone crusher in closed circuit with a 6 ft by 12 ft (1.83 m by 3.66 m) vibrating double - deck screen. Because continual packing of fines in the vibrating feeder pan would cause frequent plant shut-downs to remove the fines with jack hammers, the decision was made to replace the vibrating unit with an apron feeder and stationary grizzly ahead of the jaw crusher. A dribble belt was also installed under the apron feeder. This installation has greatly improved the feeding of the pit run ore to the .primary jaw crusher. Mining at Carlin is done by a 5 yd shovel and 7 ½ and 10 yd front-end loaders, and ore transport is by several sizes of trucks from 30 to 75 tons capacity. These pit haulage trucks dump onto stockpiles adjacent to the primary crusher. Ore is then fed to the dump hopper by front- end loaders only when the crushing plant is operating. This extra handling procedure is necessary because plant delays caused by problems with wet ore in the secondary crusher resulted in the ore setting up or packing in the dump pocket. The discovery of the Carlin deposit was the result of discriminating geologic research and prospecting devoted to the objective of finding a gold deposit that could be mined by open pit methods. By the late 1950s, Newmont Mining Corp. was becoming increasingly concerned about the trend of rapidly rising underground mining costs unless bulk mining methods could be applied. The desirability of finding an open-pittable gold deposit was apparent. The attention of Newmont geologists was directed to Nevada by the publication of two papers: "Paleozoic rocks in North-central Nevada" (1958) and "Alinements of Mining Districts in North-central Nevada" (1960), both authored or co-authored by Ralph J. Roberts of the United States Geological Survey. John Livermore, geologist of Newmont Exploration Ltd., attended a talk given by Roberts in Ely, Nevada in the summer of 1961. These papers and the address by Roberts gave details concerning the Roberts Mountain overthrust, a 483 km (300-mile) long, shallowdipping fault which pushed clastic and volcanic rocks of early and middle Paleozoic age eastward over younger marine formations. Subsequent uplift and doming with consequent erosion had locally removed the upper plate strata exposing windows of lower plate carbonate rocks. Roberts noted that the principal mineral deposits of the region, including gold, were associated with these windows which exhibited a preferred alinement. In the summer and fall of 1961 Newmont's exploration geologists John Livermore and J. Alan Coope began a systematic examination of gold occurrences associated with these windows, aided by further discussion with geologists of the US Geological Survey. Attention was directed to the Lynn and Carlin windows, particularly to those formations lying immediately above and below the Roberts Mountain fault. It was appreciated at the time that many of the gold occurrences in the region were unusual in that no colours were obtained even when panning high grade samples. A large number of rock samples were collected and analysed using fire assaying procedures, and background values for gold were established. This systematic rock sampling resulted in the identification of a distinct area of anomalous gold values, and a block of claims was staked in late October, 1961. These claims, plus an adjoining optioned 32.4 ha (80 acres) of ground, cover the main area of the present Carlin gold mine. Prior to snowfall that winter, one of the bulldozed assessment pits required to establish a claim's discovery exposed 24 m (80 ft) of mineralization assaying 0.007 kg/t (0.22 oz per st) gold. In the spring of 1962 a program of trenching, sampling, and geological mapping followed by rotary drilling was underway. Other properties in the area were acquired. The generally undistinguished nature of the dolomitic siltstones and silty dolomitic limestones hosting the micron-sized gold particles, coupled with the lack of visually associated guide minerals, made identification of the gold bearing areas very difficult. The entire drill column had to be assayed to ensure that values were not overlooked, as very often sections that might be assumed to be waste turned out to be high grade. On September 10, 1962 a high grade intersection of 24 m (80 ft) assaying over 0.03 kg/t (1 oz per st) gold was encountered in the third hole drilled. An expanded program of both rotary and diamond drilling led to the further delineation of the ore body. By December 1963, the exploration program had established an initial reserve of 10 Mt (11 million st) grading 0.01 kg/t (0.32 oz per st) gold. A 1.8 kt/d (2,000 stpd) processing plant was constructed and the first gold bullion was poured in May, 1965, just two years and eight months after the discovery hole was drilled. There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. In February 2010, Teck?s newest Concentrator at Mina Carmen de Andacollo (CDA), Andacollo, Chile was commissioned. The Concentrator is a single line configuration, comprising of one 36 ft diameter x 20 ft long SAG mill driven by an 18,000 hp gearless drive. The SAG mill feeds two ball mills each 25 ft in diameter x 40.5 ft long, each driven by a total of 19,000 hp through dual pinion drives. A series of four phases will be reviewed from operational readiness, mechanical completion, commissioning, and ramp-up. Also, now after 6 months of operation, this paper will review the significant steps taken during ramp-up enabling the announcement of commercial production, in October 2010.
