No records have been found of coal in the old Spanish documents, although some mention of it probably exists in manuscripts. Coal was found in Mt. Diablo, in Contra Costa County, about five miles south of the San Joaquin River in 1852, but the first mine, the Teutonia, was located in 1858. The deposits are located on both sides of a high ridge, and vessels of 1,000 tons burden could ascend the river to the nearest point to the mines.1 In 1854, coal was found about four miles from Oroville, on the Feather River, in Butte County. Development work was started and in 1856 a mine was opened. From the description the coal was likely a variety of lignite and probably never amounted to anything commercially, as it does not appear again in the records 2 The more valuable mines at Mt. Diablo were opened in 1859 and 1860. By 1867 there had been 11 mines started and at that time five were in operation. The seam conditions were much disturbed and lack of knowledge of them caused much waste of effort and money. All of the coal excepting that used locally and in nearby towns, was shipped to San Francisco, and largely used for steam purposes. The first receipts were in 1861-6,620 tons. A railroad to the river had been constructed and opened in February 1866. The Corral Hollow field in Alameda County was found and prospected to a small extent in 1862. Two mines were opened but little work was done and the field was then abandoned. Good exposures were rare and the cost of underground exploration was then prohibitive. The Commercial mine produced coal in 1869 and 1870, but a fire in the latter year destroyed the tipple and communications to the mine. The Livermore mine was abandoned after 18 months operation in 1875 and 1876 and no other work was done here until the nineties. Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. "Seeing the elephant" was a term often heard from 1849 to 1859, the period of the great California Gold Rush. The phrase was used by those who dreamed of instant wealth that was believed could be found in California's virgin earth and mighty rivers. When news of fabulous gold strikes throughout the Mother Lode reached far away places, thousands of gold seekers left home and family to join in this incredible adventure. The barren, placid state of California soon became one of the most bustling, populous areas in the West. Before the Rush Before 1848, Mexico ruled California. It was then a remote region, isolated from the urbane world of the East by 2900 km (1800 miles) of scorching desert and impassible mountains. By sea, it was 29 000 km (18,000 miles) via Cape Horn. Spaniards and Mexicans settled the coastal lands on tracts donated to them by the Mexican government. The inland area was the domain of Indians and a few settlers who also had been granted estates by the government. Among those settlers was Captain John Sutter. He had been fortunate enough to obtain about 11 leagues of land (spanning 100 km or 60 miles in length) from Governor Alvarado of Mexico. Sutter was somewhat of a visionary and possessed a gifted tongue. He managed to receive most of what he desired with minimal trouble. Enchanted with Sutter's personality, Alvarado promised him Mexican citizenship. Alvarado also commissioned him to become "representative of the government and officer of justice on the Northern frontier." With uncanny foresight, Sutter began building a fortress on his land in the Sacramento Valley. It later became known as Sutter's Fort. It was more than just a fort, however. It also became a stopping place and home for many foreigners and Americans who traveled to California, and it eventually became the mecca for overland pilgrims. Sutter engaged in many projects. These included a cattle ranch, fur trade and trapping, and the construction of an irrigation system. With the influx of immigrants over the years, the community around the fort grew rapidly. Lumber was much in demand and Captain Sutter agreed to supply the necessary capital for a community sawmill. The site chosen was some 72 km (45 miles) northeast of the fort on the south fork of the American River in the town of Coloma. During the course of its construction, Sutter's carpenter, James Marshall, discovered a problem with the tailrace on the mill. First Strike Early in the morning on Jan. 24, 1848, Marshall was checking the tailrace. He noticed an object shining in a foot of water at the bottom of a ditch. He reached down and picked it up. His heart began to thump wildly as he realized he was holding a gold nugget. Sutter planned to keep the find a secret for as long as possible. This information is useful for many purposes, among which are: Determining the volumetric capacity of the portion of open hole to be cemented; the amount of gravel to be used for gravel-packing a well; the size and location of seat for a packer to be placed in a well; studying the effects of nitroglycerin shots; studying the effects of acidizing; studying the cause of drill-pipe failures; studying drilling technique; geological correlations. Dubbed "Freeport's Mission Impossible" by the trade press, the company's Ertsberg mine in West Irian nevertheless shipped its first concentrates in December 1972, ahead of schedule. This is a new and great chapter in the history of Freeport Minerals Co. and its contractors. Exploration and construction were only possible by moving equipment and supplies by helicopters. This work was carried out by Petroleum Helicopters, Inc., of Lafayette, La. At the peak of operations six machines were in service manned by 11 pilots and supported by 10 mechanics. During the month of August, with work in full swing 1,604 tons were moved, including 3 DC-6 tractors requiring 18 trips each; flying hours for the month were 636.

The energy output of crushed AN/FO, crushed AN/FO mixed with Aluminum (5%, 6.4% and 9.4% A1 by mass) and a commercial emulsion explosive has been measured using a detonation calorimeter. The charges had a diameter of 10 mm and were heavily confined by a 11 mm thick copper shell. In order to achieve stable detonation glass microballoons were used in the explosives so that the density of the AN/FO charges would be around 1.1 g/cc. The charges were detonated in vacuum and the detonation products were analyzed using gas chromatography. It was found that energy values were very close to calculated values obtained by ideal detonation codes.

Adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylaminium hydrochloride (DAH) on Buller seam coal, New Zealand, have been studied. Both surfactants adsorb effectively on the coal below pH 8, and the adsorption isotherms established at pH 4 are essentially the same at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that the adsorption of these two ionic surfactants on coal is controlled by a hydrophobic bonding mechanism. However, the results of calorimetric studies suggest that coulombic attraction also plays a part in the adsorption mechanisms. It has also been found that both the SDS and DAH adsorbed in the first monolayer are not removed by lowering the surfactant concentrations in the bulk solution.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. WITH the acquisition of the Nichols Copper Company ' and the development of the large Copper Products manufacturing and selling organization, the Phelps Dodge Corporation had attained two of its important goals. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. During the past ten years, the Calumet Div. of Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has conducted extensive exploration and mining in the footwall of the Osceola amygdaloid lode in the native copper district in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In an attempt to delineate more clearly the extent and nature of high-grade footwall copper mineralization, 876 diamond drill and long steel holes aggregating slightly more than 47,000 ft have thus far been drilled from the accessible hanging-wall workings. Early in this program it became obvious, through inspection of footwall workings in progress, that due to the erratic and bunchy occurrence of the native copper in the footwall zone, the exploration drilling was failing to outline completely the extent of the oreshoots. Early drilling results indicated isolated pockets of ore whereas in actual practice the footwall was found to be fairly thoroughly mineralized in shoots within the ore zone. Based on drill results only, the "success factor" (discovery ratio) was only 34%.

The paper will discuss the successful construction of the largest dollar value ($194.5 million, U.S.) TARP (Tunnel and Reservoir Plan) project built to date for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The mining and lining of the 18.5km (11.54 miles) tunnels will be emphasized. The tunnels were driven utilizing three TBMs ranging in size from 9.85m (32.33 ft) to 3.70m (12.16 ft) in diameter. The operations surrounding the 11,546m (37,876 ft) long 9.85m (32.33 ft) diameter tunnel will be highlighted. A total system concept was utilized to attain mining rates up to 29.3m (96 ft) per shift and lining productions of 58.5m (192 ft) per day. The reliability of these systems was instrumental in the completion of the project more than a year ahead of schedule.

El presente trabajo señala el cambio de proceso metalúrgico de flotación a cianuración CIL para el tratamiento de mineral del yacimiento Chipmo en la Planta de Procesos de Orcopampa, donde se trata principalmente minerales de oro con bajo contenido de plata, así como las ventajas de su aplicación. Los beneficios que ha generado este nuevo proceso involucran los aspectos económicos, sociales y ambientales respectivamente. El primero, refiere un mejor costo beneficio, la mayor recuperación de oro, la comercialización de dore como producto final del proceso y el menor número de personal en las operaciones debido a la simplificación del proceso; el segundo, señala el cambio a un mejor clima organizacional en la empresa y la irrigación de terrenos eriazos, beneficiando a pobladores de las comunidades cercanas. Finalmente, el tercero, describe la reducción de aspectos ambientales significativos, la cero emisión de efluentes líquidos, el menor consumo de agua son los principales beneficios de este proceso.

Cambior has been involved in the Guiana Shield since 1990, first in Guyana and then in Suriname starting in 1994. This paper presents the history of Omai Gold Mines Limited in Guyana, where commercial production started in 1993 after an investment of US $150 million. In 1995, the mine was expanded in order to increase the milling capacity to 21,000 tonnes per day. After ten years of production, approximately 3 million ounces of gold have been produced. Building on this experience, Cambior became involved in Suriname with the Rosebel Project. A US $95 million pre-production program started in the fourth quarter of 2002, and the mine should be in commercial production early in 2004.

Many mining companies try to fight their way up from small operator and exploration company to major producer. Not many companies make it. Cambior Inc., formed in 1986, is one company well on its way to making it as a major operating company. In 1993, Cambior surpassed 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold production and began operations at its world class Omai gold mine in Guyana. At the same time, the company has embarked on a program of geographic and minerals diversification. Cambior, a Canadian company, now has interests in eight mines, three development projects and more than 100 exploration properties in North and South America. The company’s goal is to derive 70% of its income from gold and 30% from base metals and other minerals. Cambior’s moderate diversification into base metals gives protection against negative gold price fluctuations. It also balances the typically short term gold mines and the longer term base metal mines.

The Cambrian structure in the Mt Read Volcanics was produced by four deformational events: obduction of forearc-derived mafic/ultramalic complexes in the early Middle Cambrian, a middle Middle Cambrian extensional phase related to the post-collisional Mt Read volcanism and VHMS mineralisation, Middle Cambrian E-W folding, and Late Cambrian N-S folding and basin inversion. The major phase of VHMS mineralisation in western Tasmania is restricted to the very brief period of extensional tectonics within the middle Middle Cambrian. Within this period a N-S graben was produced with a complex series of transfer zones, largely striking E-W. Most VHMS mineralisation is restricted to the top of massive volcanic successions, with several mines close to Cambrian transfer structures. Many of the transfer structures continued to be active until the Devonian. The later compressional Cambrian events are not significant in localising orc formation. Within the Rosebery mine a complex pattern of minor Cambrian normal faults has a second order control on the distribution of the mineralisation.
