Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

Iron ore pellets use bentonite clay as binder at dosages from 0.5to 1.0% (10 to 20 pounds per ton) of moist iron ore concentrate. Bentonite is typically shipped hundreds of miles from Wyoming to the Lake Superior iron ore district. It is therefore best to know how effective a bentonite will be before it is shipped and used to bind concentrate into pellets. Current tests of bentonite effectiveness include: plate water absorption, methylene blue uptake, free swell, exchangeable cations, and glycolated layer expansion. However, these tests have many disadvantages: First, they only measure the ability of a bentonite to expand, disperse, or absorb, not how well it will bond. Second, most of the tests require up to 20 hours to perform. Bentonite only has a few minutes to interact within the concentrate before it is indurated (sintered). These long-term tests may not reflect the true behavior of bentonite. Third, the tests are tedious and often results are inconsistent between different iron ore concentrates, labs, and technicians. Fourth, some of the testing equipment is difficult to procure. Fifth, procedures are often difficult to standardize. In this paper, the Binder Effectiveness Strength (BESt) test to evaluate binders for iron ore pellets is presented that: measures the ability of bentonite to bond, requires only about two hours to complete, is simple and reproducible, and utilizes readily available equipment that has been standardized for decades.

The aim of this study is to produce desiccant clay from a well known Ca-bentonite deposit in Turkey. Towards this aim, bentonite samples were first procured and then subjected to some characterization tests. Various methods were applied to enhance the moisture adsorption capacity of bentonites to a desirable level. These methods include utilization of some additives namely calcium chloride and heat treatment at various temperatures. It is shown that the moisture adsorption capacity Ca-bentonites without any additive are between 14%~17 % (w/w) upon by heat treatment whereas the addition of calcium chloride significantly, raised the moisture adsorption capacities.

Introduction From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modern applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is also called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as nonswelling bentonite or southern bentonite. Swelling bentonite is recognized for its rapid hydration of interlayer sodium and subsequent dramatic expansion up to more than 20 times its original volume. Low shear can then disperse the hydrated sodium bentonite to form suspensions that increase viscosity and suspend solids. However, when shear is subsequently eliminated a sodium bentonite slurry gels. Characteristically, nonswelling calcium bentonite has relatively poor hydration properties and thus low expansion of the clay mineral. When subjected to low shear, calcium bentonite exhibits very little viscosity and poor suspension. Additionally, when shear is subsequently eliminated no more than minimal gelling takes place. The domestic and export markets related to both swelling and nonswelling bentonite are discussed below.

Because of the competitive nature of the iron ore pelletizing industry, commodities required for the production of pellets are continually being scrutinized to minimize their usage and offset rapidly escalating costs. In the Tilden pellet plant, the usage of one commodity, bentonite, has been reduced from over twenty-four pounds per long ton of pellets to as low as eight pounds per long ton. The evolution of bentonite usage from plant start-up to the present time is described.

"Considerations are presented for developing and implementing self-hardening slurry mix designs to be utilized in barrier seepage walls. Slag-cement-cement-bentonite (SCCB) slurries are the primary focus, with some comparisons referenced to the more traditional Portland-based cement-bentonite (CB) slurries. Field and laboratory mixing methods are reviewed, including 1) single sack – single mixer method; 2) bentonite slurry mixer – cementitious addition mixer method; 3) bentonite mixer – grout mixer – CB blending mixer method. Major phenomena associated with the dynamics of barrier wall excavation, such as loss of water from the in-trench slurry and consolidation of in-trench slurry are discussed. Other topics touched upon include sand content effects, fluidizers utilized, and chemical contaminants. The role of higher bentonite to water ratio is reviewed, with demonstration of improvement of filtration properties, and an increase of water retention of the final consolidated product.IntroductionSelf-hardening slurry has been utilized to construct barrier seepage walls for many decades. This is essentially a single-step slurry excavation and backfill process whereby the trench-supporting fluid gains strength over a short period during installation and maintains or develops low hydraulic conductivity. The resulting curing slurry becomes the actual barrier wall as the resultant cement-augmented clay slurry now fulfills the dual purpose of both temporary trench stabilization and final cured-in-place product. This eliminates the requirement and expense of subsequent backfill/slurry displacement operations required in traditional barrier wall installations.Self-hardening slurries have been fabricated using a number of various clays, most commonly sodium bentonite, calcium bentonite, attapulgite, and sepiolite. Perhaps due to plentiful high quality sodium bentonite deposits found domestically, the proven excavation stabilization properties imparted from sodium bentonite slurries, sodium bentonites are typically specified for formulating self-hardening slurries in the US. Cementitious materials utilized most commonly are Portland cement and slag (ground blast furnace slag or GBFS). For the purposes of this discussion, self-hardening slurry having a cementitious of Portland will be referred to as CB. Those having cementitious material of GBFS replacing Portland (partially or wholly) will be referred to as SCCB."

Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

In just over a generation, the United States bentonite industry has grown from almost a rake and shovel operation into one with a multimillion ton annual production rate and exports to all corners of the globe. Bentonite production, pressed to keep pace with the soaring demand, has increased more than 10 fold in the last 30 years. The worldwide demand for bentonite is expected to double during the next eight to ten years. It remains to be seen whether U.S. producers will be able to maintain the dominant position in the world market. It should be noted that accurate statistical information regarding production or market information is difficult or impossible to obtain abroad and also within the United States. Published information obtained in response to questionnaires of the Bureau of Mines tends to be on the conservative side. FOUNDRY It has only been in the last thirty or forty years that bentonite has become an indispensible part of the age old metal casting industry. The relationship has proven most beneficial to both industries and promises to be long lasting. Bentonite and newly discovered deposits of sepiolite, saponite, and hectorite are now being processed and marketed from the Amargosa Valley of Nevada. All of these deposits are large. The bentonite has been known for decades and is the whitest known. The only other sepiolite deposit is in Spain. The only other commercial hectorite deposit is at Hector, California. No other saponite deposit is known. All the components except bentonite are hydrous magnesium silicates. The bentonite is mixed layer Na-Ca. All the materials have characteristics unique to their locale and type, such as high yield point for drilling muds and liquid suspending agents. The sepiolite has geothermal stability. Figure 1.

"The property is about 120 miles north of Red Lake in the Favourable Lake area, district of Kenora ( Patricia part) , Ontario. The original discovery was staked by K. Murray in December, 1927. The first development work was done by the Favourable Lake Mining and Exploration Company. In 1936 Newmont Mining Corporation acquired control of the property and developed it to production by September, 1939. Production to the end of 1945 had a value of $7,534,656 from 441,457 tons of ore, an average value of $17.04 a ton . This production was mainly from gold and silver, with lead and zinc of subordinate importance.The rocks in the vicinity of the mine trend in a north-south direction. From east to west the sequence is: (1) A dark-coloured, massive rock, presumably a flow, composed mainly of quartz and biotite. ( 2) A buff- coloured, scricitized rock locally containing quartz phenocrysts and black hornblende. This is an alteration product of the dark variety and is later than the folding. It occurs mainly within the dark rock. (3) A series of sediments comprising thin beds of greywacke, grit, quartzite, conglomerate, and iron formation. ( 4) A gabbro sill, now largely altered to amphibolite.With the exception of the buff type, these rocks dip 80°E. The buff rock has a very irregular outline in comparison with the other rocks and appears to dip somewhat more flatly east. Felsite and diorite dykes are also present. These have a general strike of S.60°E. and dip 65°S .W. A post-ore diorite dyke trending N.15°E. occurs about 2,000 feet east of the mine area."

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. This paper describes two-lane dual motorway tunnels under construction in Bergen. The tunnels are part of a by-pass motorway system throuth the most congested area of the city of Bergen. The tunnels are unique due to their length, heavy traffic, longitudinal ventilation system and the use of a tunnel boring machine, or "TBM", to excavate through hard rock. The tunnels are being built by The Norwegian Public Road Administration and the TBM was delivered by the Robbins Company. The diameter of the TBM is 7.8 m and the tunnel profile is cut by conventional drill and blasting methods in the tunnel's lower half to attain a two lane motorway tunnel. This paper also describes proposed fjord crossings along the Norwegian west coast where the TBM may be used due to its great advantages in comparison to conventional drill and blasting methods.

2001, the New Jersey Transit Authority commissioned the JV Merco-Obayashi with the rehabilitation contract of the approximately 130-year-old, 4,200 ft long, partially brick- lined Bergen North Tunnel. The contract entailed the tunnel enlargement, shotcrete and rock dowels initial support according to the NATM, a waterproofing system, tunnel drainage and a cast-in-place concrete lining. The rock conditions encountered required design adaptations and significant modifications of the initial tunnel support. Flexibility, skill and extensive experience on the Authority’s and Contractor’s side finally lead to a success. This paper describes the operations and design modifications carried out.

The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

The thirty year old wharf structures at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey?s Port Elizabeth Marine Terminal are being modernized for the next generation of Post-Panamax container ships, which require deeper water and larger container cranes. The terminal operator is upgrading the wharf in order to remain competitive, now and into the future. The upgrade coincides with the Army Corps of Engineers? $733 million project to deepen the main shipping channel in New York Harbor. This paper focuses on the structural modifications to accommodate berth deepening and to support the heavier loads of the new cranes. An overview is provided of the design and actual construction, including typical problems encountered when combining new and existing structures. The wharf improvements included: ? Installation of a steel king pile/sheet pile cutoff wall along the face of the wharf to permit increasing the depth from ?12.2 m + 0.61 m to ?15.2 m + 0.61 m ( ?40 ft + 2 ft to ?50 ft + 2 ft) ? Removal of the existing crane rail support beams and installation of new piles and beams to support the increased crane loads ? Replacement of the existing timber fender system with a new system capable of resisting the berthing energy of a 152,000 MT displacement vessel, and having dedicated sections for berthing barges ? Replacing the existing overhead, landside crane electric feeder system with a waterside, cable reel trench system. The work included upgrading the transformer capacity at the terminal for increased crane power demands This paper provides a case history for port administrators, terminal operators, engineers, and shipping lines challenged with upgrading aging terminals.
