Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion of overall production than at any time in the past. U. S. Bureau of Mimes statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods in- creased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating over- burden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely). The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

The Tayoltita Unit of Minas de San Luis, S. A. is situated in an isolated corner of the state of Durango, Mexico. The ore deposits in the region were first worked by Indians, but by 1757 the Spaniards had discovered them, and the first systematic exploitation of the mines commenced. By the early 1900's most of the mines had been acquired by American interests, and the San Luis Mining Company was organized. The modern period of exploitation, uninterrupted for the last 74 years, began. In 1962 the company was fully "Mexicenized" in compliance with the modification of the mining law, and the name was changed to Minas de San Luis, S. A. Tayoltita continues as one of Mexico's most important silver and gold mines. The ore is extracted in en extensive underground operation, mining epithermal fissure veins by selective methods. The ore is milled and treated in an efficient counter-current cyanide plant, where 95 % of the silver and 96 % of the gold is recovered. Current annual bullion output is 55,000 kg (1.7 million troy oz) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy oz) of gold from milling 165,000 try (181,900 stpy). Rough, 33-kg (1000-troy oz) bullion bars are smelted at the mine, shipped by air to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and are thence sold to the Met- Mex Peñoles smelter in Torreon, Coahuila. Ore reserves, blocked by very conservative methods, are currently at 540,000 tons (595,000 st). Ore reserve grade is 425 g of silver and 6 g of gold per ton (12.4 troy oz Ag and 0.18 troy oz Au per st).

Solids and liquid phase residence time distribution data is reported for a laboratory column flotation cell. The effects of various physical flotation parameters on residence time distributions are reported and analyzed. A plug flow model with recycle is proposed for the froth phase and a tanks in series model for the pulp. By comparison of two and three phase residence time -distribution data it has been shown that the use of liquid residence time distribution data to predict the residence time distribution of the solids in a column is not valid.

This paper discusses the role of mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the beneficiation of arsenopyrite containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite). Adaptation to minerals altered the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed.

Nowadays, stakeholders have a strong say to the enforcement of best practices by mining and quarrying companies. In most cases there is a direct relationship between sustainable development principles and best practices. Mining companies try to apply best practices in order to sustain their operation without lost time and effort to litigation, and other obstacles. However, when and where there is a lack of state or regional mineral policy, or when the mineral policy is fragmented and touching on conflicting laws, mining operations may be subject to additional administrative hassles, and, thus, operators feel threatened and tend to apply best practices loosely. This paper argues that the only way that mining and minerals operations can be a source of development is to ensure that they are working within the framework of sustainable development. Furthermore, in order to follow the paradigm of sustainable development they would need to be guided by a regional, national or even transnational (i.e. European) minerals policy.

The sulfur in high-sulfur bauxite not only pollutes the environment but also harms alumina production. This study investigated the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite by adding Zn or ZnO during the Bayer process. The results showed that the different valence sulfur (S2−, S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) in sodium aluminate solution can be effectively removed by adding Zn during the digestion process. Adding ZnO removes the S2− in liquor, but the other sulfur compounds (S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2−) are not affected. The mechanism of sulfur removal has been elucidated, where the S2O3 2−, SO3 2−, and SO4 2− are first reduced to S2−, and after adding Zn, the S2− enters into red mud in the form of ZnS. The ZnO then reacts with S2− to generate the ZnS that enters into red mud. Thus, this is a new and effective method of sulfur removal by adding Zn during the digestion process. The results shed light on the removal of sulfur from high-sulfur bauxite during alumina production.

Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is currently in a Pre-feasibility study evaluating a large and deep copper and molybdenum deposit in the historic mining district east of Superior, Arizona. Work scheduled for the next several years includes dewatering the existing shut-down mine (the Magma Mine) and sinking an exploratory shaft to 2,130 meters (7,000 feet) below the surface. To dewater the Magma Mine and sink the exploratory shaft, RCML must extract and manage about 2 billion gallons of accumulated mine water inventory, as well as about 300 million gallons per year of new inflow. In order to conserve a valuable water resource in a desert environment, RCML worked with the New Magma Irrigation and Drainage District (NMIDD) to provide treated mine water to blend with and supplement the NMIDD?s water supply to approximately 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of farmland located east of Phoenix. A 44 km (27-mile) pipeline was needed to convey the treated water. It was essential that a treatment system be used which could reliably meet irrigation water quality goals, produce a non-scaling effluent to maintain pipeline flow capacity, and generate a dense sludge minimizing disposal cost and volume. This paper describes the resulting mine water treatment and recovery system (MWTS) and how the system has performed against objectives.

Six Sigma is a methodology that uses a structured and disciplined approach to improve process performance (higher throughput, better recovery, lower cost, shorter cycle time, etc.). Specially trained people called “black belts” lead and manage Six Sigma projects. Black belts, with assistance from their team, ensure that projects follow the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, implement and control) process phases. Timely completion of each project, with measurable deliverables, is key to Six Sigma’s significant financial success. Implementation of Six Sigma has been growing in recent years in a wide range of industries. The heavy mineral industry, like many other industries, could benefit from what Six Sigma has to offer. Specific Six Sigma project examples are included from DuPont’s Heavy Mineral Production Plant in Florida.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. Instabilities occurred as a result of climate changes caused to investigate the rock behavior dependency to temperature changes, in this paper. In the natural earth condition, the phase transition of pore water has known to be the most effective factor causing different rocks mechanical properties due to temperature changes. So, the temperature range of [-30, 30]°C is selected in laboratory tests of this study. P-wave velocity, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and elasticity modulus of rocks at different temperatures are studied by developing a temperature adjusting apparatus. The tests were performed on three rock types. The results show that firstly, the temperature reduction and pore fluid freezing improves these rock?s mechanical properties. Secondly, the dependency of rock properties to climate changes depends on the type and shape of its porosity as well as porosity percent. The improvement of rock mechanical properties in jointed rocks exceeds rocks with spherical pores. Finally, maximum changes in rock?s properties occur at [-10, 0]°C, which includes the phase transition of pore fluid. Keywords: Temperature; Rock Mechanical Properties; Pore Fluid; Porosity.

The Missouri University of Science and Technology?s (Missouri S&T) Experimental Mine is a teaching and research facility which has been excavated in limestone by mining engineering students over almost 100 years. The mine is currently being extended to a second level. Available fans for ventilation are two surface fans of 24 kW and two underground booster fans of 12 kW. The design of a ventilation network in conjunction with multi surface fans and booster fans entails a complex procedure. Ventsim Visual software modeling has been used for network analysis to determine the optimum surface and booster fans locations, blade settings, and speeds. Both natural and mechanical induced ventilation pressures have been taken into account. Three working faces on each level have been designated as target points that minimum air quantities are required. The model has been calibrated against a pressure and quantity survey. Design of ductwork, door/stopping positions and different fans characteristics have been examined. The optimum flow rate at identified working faces, efficiency and minimum energy losses and annual network power cost determine the best scenario. The optimum design has been determined for the ventilation network for the next 100 years. The optimum flow rate across working faces is the key criterion selected.

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

This paper discusses the time-dependent behaviour of rock when it involves the presence of several layers of rock strata in the vicinity of mine openings, mining in sequences and the placement of backfill. The paper describes numerical techniques which proved useful when such situations are encountered in practice. The model is elastoviscoplastic. At given time stations, short term loading or changes can be made to the creep behavior of the rock. The modelling technique is first described and is followed by simulations of stresses and displacements in a potash mine with the primary objective to demonstrate the effect of such aspects as mining and fill sequences in 3-D. This involves cutting finite elements representing the strip of the mining face and simultaneously filling those elements representing the newly placed fill. The stiffness of the fill varies with the degree of compaction at each point. In this way, the effect of the time of fill placement, the gap between the top of the fill and the back as well as the degree of compaction are simulated. The second example is a 2-D problem simulating the long term effect of backfill, as a material compacting with time, on the settlement of the layers above it as well as the closure of the room.

Health and safety issues are a very important aspect of mining activities. Although the application of scientific research and current technology shields workers from many dangerous aspects of mining, accidents do happen. Many companies and institutions worldwide have committed to a continuous effort to minimize such occurrences. In this study, the health and safety data pertaining to the Greek mining and quarrying industry for the last 3 decades are presented and critically evaluated with respect to number of workers, annual production, etc. Appropriate indices are also calculated regarding the incidence and frequency of accidents. Health and safety issues specific to mining in Greek are also discussed.

The existing Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel complex is being expanded to include the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel. This will be a subaqueous bored crossing between two islands constructed for the original 1960s immersed-tube tunnel. Jet grouting was employed by the Chesapeake Tunnel Joint Venture (CTJV) to provide watertight base plugs, launch and retrieval blocks for the tunnel boring machine (TBM), a TBM canopy to limit ground movement, and a retaining wall to enable off-island excavation: all within hydraulically placed sands. This paper will review the design and construction challenges, including soil permeability and recharge, grout communication, installed grout strengths, and remediation requirements.

The Pueblo Viejo gold/silver mine, located in the Dominican Republic, started production in early 1974 processing ores averaging 4 g/tonne gold and 20 g/tonne silver at a rate of 7,250 tonnes/day. The ore milled is a silicified siltstone with average work index of about 8 that occurs as an extensive oxide capping of a primary sulfide orebody. The sulfide ores are refractory to conventional treatment process and extensive research work is now in progress to develop a treatment process for them. The ore deposit has a long history having been mined by the indigenous Arawak Indians (for some time in the early sixteenth century) prior to the arrival of the Spanish and then by the Spaniards. In the early 1950?s, Italian engineers attempted to process the sulfide ores. Mining by the Indians and Spanish was abandoned because of low grade and little coarse gold in the oxide ores and by the Italians because of the refractory nature of the sulfide ore. In 1969, Rosario Resources geologists discovered that there existed sufficient reserves of oxide ore for a viable mining operation and accordingly, the plant was designed, built and brought into production.

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover.
