Staying competitive in the highly aggressive Powder River Basin is a challenge facing all operators. Any advantage that a mine utilizes to improve productivity and reduce costs could mean the difference in the tight spot coal market. Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC's located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

"Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mines to use refuge alternatives (RAs) to provide a breathable air environment for 96 hrs. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the heat and humidity buildup inside an RA. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress or even death. MSHA regulations require that the apparent temperature in a fully occupied RA must not exceed 95°F. To investigate this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. The test results showed that the average measured air temperature within the RA increased by 9.4°C (17°F) and the relative humidity (RH) approached 94 %RH. The test results were used to benchmark a thermal simulation model of the tested RA. The validated thermal simulation model predicted the average air temperature inside the RA at the end of 96 hours to within 0.6°C (1.0°F) of the average measured air temperature. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who fail to escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the potentially adverse thermal environment inside an RA from the metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The accumulation of heat and humidity can result in miners suffering heat stress, heat stroke, or even death. In its 2007 report to Congress, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) recommended that RAs should be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature (a temperature-humidity metric) in an occupied RA does not exceed 35°C (95°F). However, a standard method to determine compliance with this metric does not exist. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex, and is not easily defined analytically or experimentally. To investigate the related issues, OMSHR conducted heat and humidity testing on a 23-person tent-type RA in its Experimental Mine (EM) in a test area that was isolated from the mine ventilation system. During the testing, numerous parameters were measured: heat input to the chamber, the air temperature and relative humidity inside the RA, the air temperature in the mine, the mine strata temperatures versus depth, and the airflow inside and outside the chamber. The focus of this paper is on the temperature rise within an RA. TAITherm heat transfer analysis software was used to develop a thermal simulation model of the RA as it was tested in the mine, using the test results as the benchmark. The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs. This paper describes the shaft design and construction for a 72-inch microtunnel under 14 active railroad tracks in Avondale, Louisiana. Initial shaft design for a deeper tunnel alignment considered secant piles with a jet grout plug. Final design for a shallower tunnel alignment included contractor input with support consisting of braced sheet piles with a jet grout plug. The authors further elaborate on jet grout implementation in very soft organic clay soils and the practical limitations of jet grouting. This paper emphasizes how all project participants worked together to utilize value engineering and alternative delivery on a unique tunneling project with a focus on temporary shaft support.

Performance of mixing mechanisms in flotation cells is paramount, as inefficiencies can lead to financial losses through valuable minerals lost to tailings. Technological advancements have been implemented in flotation cells to optimize performance, but regardless of the efficacy of these developments, room for improvement may persist. Since its launch in 2005, FloatForce® has set a high industry standard for flotation mixing mechanisms. However, current mining trends call for sustainability-driven developments while improving metallurgical performance. Metso has recently introduced FloatForce®+, the latest iteration of FloatForce, developed through extensive laboratory, pilot, and industrial testing, aligning with mining sustainability trends. It has been designed to maximize recovery, reduce power draw and optimize manufacturing materials. This development stems from a redesigned rotor profile paired with a harmonizing stator configuration. This paper presents the development journey of Metso’s latest patented flotation mixing mechanism, an advancement to improve metallurgical performance at a high sustainable standard in flotation cells. The theory, CFD modeling and test work are discussed in detail.

The Doyon Mine in Quebec, Canada, evaluates the possibility of desulfurizing its tailings to produce material to be used as cover for the acid-generating tailings disposal site. Laboratory tests showed that a single-layer cover made of desulfurized tailings placed over reactive tailings can prevent the generation of acid mine drainage. Modeling with the software Vadose/W was used to optimize the design parameters, namely, cover thickness, water table position and residual sulfide content of desulfurized tailings following laboratory work. It was found that the optimal configuration includes a 1-m (3.3-ft) desulfurized tailings cover containing 0.8% S, with the water table kept at the interface between the reactive tailings and the cover. To maintain the cover performance to reduce oxygen flux toward acid-generating tailings even in the event of a long dry period, a sand layer is suggested to protect the cover from excessive evaporation. It is possible to reach the environmental objective for oxygen flux chosen for the Doyon Mine (10 mol/ m2/year) with the protective sand layer, even in extremely dry conditions.

The Mojave Desert is a particularly fragile ecosystem that faces several significant impacts. These include rapid housing development, overdrafted water supplies, and loss of wildlife habitat as a result of mining, industrial activity and urban sprawl. Over the past three years, a diverse group of educators, natural resource managers and business leaders has been assembled under the auspices of a local college to provide unique natural resource education opportunities for the region. By leveraging the collective experience of these present generation natural resource professionals, the Mojave Sustainability Project hopes to provide the next generation of professionals with that knowledge and those technical skills upon which tomorrow’s community can rely. This paper is a case study of how partnerships between academia, government, industry and the community can serve to address the regional social, environmental, and economic needs of today, while investing in the development of those professionals who will balance these needs tomorrow.

The depth capability of engineering seismographs has been greatly increased by the use of signal enhancement, a technique in which seismic waveforms created by repeated impacts are digitized, stored, and summed. Summation amplifies the signal and partially cancels background noise. This gives a clearer picture of the wave aid makes it possible to determine the travel tune of signals from 'eater depth. Signal enhancement combined with continuous display of waveform, permanent recording of waveform, and precision digital readout of travel time has opened new fields of application in mining and engineering. Recent work has clown that replacement sulfides can be distinguished seismically from country rock at Bistee, Ariz. There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.

The efficient management of the distribution of goods and services is important throughout the minerals industry. From the scheduling of processing plant operations, to the routing of work crews in mines, to the planning of product development, vast amounts of time, energy, and money are wasted due to poor planning and scheduling. Thus, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating computational algorithms that can be used to minimize the economic losses related to scheduling and allocating resources. Although there is commercial software available for tackling many scheduling problems, there has been little relief provided for solving the difficult traveling salesman with time windows problem (TSTW). The TSTW problem is a "derivative" of the classic traveling salesman problem, and can be used to minimize the distance traveled by vehicles or personnel to visit all points on a tour, with the additional constraint that each point on the tour must be visited within a specified time window. This paper is a survey of published work in which genetic algorithms have been used to efficiently solve the traveling salesman problem and its more difficult derivative, the TSTW problem. A genetic algorithm is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural genetics, and has been used to solve a broad spectrum of engineering optimization problems. Results indicate that the versatility, searching power, and simplicity of genetic algorithms can be used to provide substantial improvement in the area of scheduling and resource allocation.

The "Service de Protection Technique"of the "Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire" was asked by the Commission of European Communities to conduct measurement campaigns which would make it possible to evaluate, on an experimental basis, the collective risk to miners exposed to radon in underground, non-uranium mines located in countries within the European Community. 1. METHODOLOGY USED TO CONDUCT THE CAMPAIGNS This campaign is original in that direct measurements of the individual monthly exposure to potential [a]-energy from short-lived radon daughters are made using personal [a]-dosimeters described previously (1). We call this type of dosimetry "personal dosimetry". The workers who wear the personal [a]-dosimeters were selected taking into account the various categories of workers and their work assignments in the various areas of the mine. Another way of finding out the occupational exposure of these miners consists in making numerous measurements of the radon concentration at the various work places, taking into account the time spent at each place by each worker. This procedure is too complex for an evaluation of the collective risk as requested by the Commission of European Communities and was therefore rejected. Additional data was gathered during these measurements campaigns using the following techniques (table 1). "Surface subsidence caused by both underground room-and-pillar mining operations and solution mining operations have each been studied separately, but never combined. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. PROJECT BACKGROUND FMC Minerals (FMC) has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, Wyoming, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 1,600 feet. Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed. The location from which the trona was removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations is important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found that would allow for the use of surface subsidence measurements to estimate the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find a relationship between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured subsidence and the solution cavern using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI), to determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by solution mining activities. The project also attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The data used in this study were collected over a seven year period, 2008 through 2014."

The understanding of coal mine roof lithology is a critical component in the determination of engineering solutions for roof control. Coreholes were the first technology available to determine lithology of the roof in reserve areas, but coreholes are typically drilled 500–2,500 ft apart due to their cost and sometimes reach more than $125,000 dollars per hole, depending on mine conditions. The next method developed to bridge this gap was the fiber-optic scope which is utilized in the roof at the faces of underground development. High-end fiber-optic scopes can also be costly (20,000–40,000 dollars) but are more affordable than drilling a corehole, and the information can be processed immediately to make quick roof support determinations. The fiberscope can be operated wherever a roof bolter can drill a hole, and there are no restrictions related to property owners, proximity to streams, elevation changes, etc. The latest borescoping method utilized by mining companies is the use of videoscopes. Videoscopes and all borescopes in general are limited by the lengths of the scope and the length of the borehole drilled in the mine. Videoscopes have the advantage of being able to record video while examining the roof lithology. The information can be recorded quickly underground and then be examined on the surface which allows anyone to capture the video so that a geologist can make lithology descriptions without ever going underground. In the past, videoscopes had limited resolution, a short battery life, were fragile and were relatively costly. As technology progresses, videoscopes have become more affordable, have increased battery life, and offer enhanced 1080p resolution. With the broader availability of affordable videoscopes, videoscopes can be more readily used in various mine environments at every active section underground. This paper will discuss the types of videoscopes available, the features that will aid in lithology description/identification, the deployment methods pertaining to supplemental roof support recommendations, and an advanced methodology to enhance accuracy in understanding roof lithology.

The rheological properties of mineral suspensions affect the design and operation of transport, mixing, size classification, grinding, gravity concentration, flotation and de-watering systems. In many cases, the rheological properties can be modified to improve processing through the addition of chemical additives. These additives may be either organic or inorganic and generally affect the state of particle aggregation or dispersion. Inorganic modifiers act primarily by affecting the surface charge of mineral particles and thus control the magnitude of electrostatic attraction/repulsion between particles. The action of organic additives (polymers and surfactants) is a combination of electrostatic and steric forces – the latter being related to the molecular weight of these reagents. While low molecular weight polymers are dispersants (viscosity reducers), high molecular weight polymers are likely to induce flocculation and increase yield stress.

As an alternative to a million dollar, sensor based, computer dispatching system, Cyprus Pima Mining Company has installed a home¬made analog computer. The device is used in conjunction with a standard radio-dispatching system; it is inexpensive and very simple to build and operate. It enables the dispatcher to make near opti¬mum dispatching decisions and to identify all off schedule haulage trucks. Since installation, Cyprus Pima has experienced significant increases in pit productivity.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.

Real-time operational excellence is achieved through the seamless integration of various components. Key aspects include precise instrumentation, real-time data collection, data analytics, and an efficient optimization platform. Additionally, to ensure success, the real-time optimization platform must be incorporated into the site’s internal process control system (Nunez, 2022). This paper provides an overview of practical lessons and best practices for autogenous (AG), semi-autogenous (SAG), and ball mill (BM) grinding. It highlights the implementation of advanced instrumentation, specifically vibration sensors on the rotating mill shell. The paper also delves into the application of advanced analytics necessary for generating new measurements that accurately represent real-time grinding activity in the mill. These Advanced Analytics Measurements (AAM) are compared with well-known grinding curves to determine the optimal grinding point. The discussion focuses on key industry opportunities using real-time mill shell vibration results to derive new correlations and optimize the grinding process.

The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.
