The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

The fall of small pieces of rock between roof bolts causes over 80 pct of the ground fall injuries in underground coal mines. Roof screen, if installed on the bolting cycle, can significantly reduce the number of these injuries. As the surface of the roof fails, the screen will have to retain the broken rock without failing or excessive deformation. Welded wire screen is the most common type of screen material used for roof surface control in underground coal mines. The load-deformation characteristics and the load capacity of welded wire screen were evaluated in the laboratory in a specially built test frame. In the frame, the square screen sections were held in place by bolts and bearing plates at the four corners while a center load was applied to the screen. The parameters evaluated included the wire gauge and configuration, the bearing plate loads and bolt spacing. The wire gauge of the tested screen was 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Maximum screen capacities for both load and displacement were developed for each of the wire gauge sizes along with the screen stiffness. This information can be used for screen selection and for the evaluation and determination of screen performance. This research focuses on the strata control issues in a Bord and Pillar depillaring working under the influence of dead load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. It reports the modeling of a mine working through the FLAC 2D software under the Indian geo-mining conditions. The modeling results of an actual mine working under softcover were compared with that under the intact overburden condition to assess the influence of the soft overburden over the depillaring working. The modeling work involved progressive caving of the strata and the cyclic goaf filling following the modelsimulated occurrence of main fall and periodic caving. Mohr-Coulomb Failure criteria along with a simplified strain-softening (MCSS) model was used to study the failure and caving mechanism. Salamon’s compaction model was used to simulate compaction and resultant stress recovery in the goaf material. Comparison of the model findings was done in terms of load on supports, abutment stress, and convergence, apart from the stress redistribution and failure mechanism. The load transfer mechanism of the soft overburden was also studied for an overall understanding of the strata behavior in such workings.

Block cave mining method poses unique ventilation challenges compared to other underground metal mining methods. This research study focuses on assessing the airflow behavior in regulated airflow distribution systems by developing a 1:100 scaled block cave experimental model and a numerical model. This study also investigated gas flow behavior under various airflow conditions. Based on our findings, we observed that reduction in particle size and porosity of caved materials, decrease in cave footprint, and closure of undercut drifts would increase cave airflow resistance. The increased airflow is found beneficial for gas dilution regardless of its source locations, while the regulated airflow distribution system might deteriorate gas dilution situation when the source is located in the extraction drifts.

Cable shovels are capital-expensive and primary production equipment in many surface mines. The forces acting on the shovel dipper vary as the dipper moves through the muck-pile. The variations in the forces cause stress loading of the components of shovel and dipper resulting in unplanned downtimes, reduced shovel efficiency, and high mining costs. A potential solution to the above problems is the deployment of an intelligent shovel excavation (ISE) technology, with real-time formation identification, recording, and knowledge transmission capabilities. This research advances the ISE technology by developing dynamic model of cable shovel dipper using Newton-Euler techniques. The model includes the dynamic cutting and dynamic weight forces acting on the dipper as it moves through the muck-pile.

Sustainable development is at odds with reality in the minerals industry. Increasing world population and aspirations are leading to increased energy and mineral consumption. Non-renewable fossil fuels are being exploited at a much faster rate than they are being discovered. Mineral reserves are diminishing and of lower grade. Despite recycling, many of the economic reserves of the rarer metals on which technological society has come to depend are being depleted, and many of the bulk metals are being exploited at ever increasing rates. And yet, mining continues, with a long-term downtrend in commodity prices, matched by more efficient mining and processing. Will society turn to a low carbon economy before fossil fuels are depleted? Will prices come to better reflect the full cost of mineral production? Will technology save us, or is it at the root of the problem? The key drivers continue to be an ever increasing aspirational population and the law of supply and demand, rather than sustainability considerations. The paper illustrates this with examples of worldwide and Australian data.

LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

The efficient operation of an open pit mine presupposes that the slopes are maintained at an angle which closely approaches that of the ultimate stability of the slope. In order to do this in a safe manner, it is essential that the data relating to the behavior of the slopes be monitored and made available, through an instrumentation system, to the appropriate personnel so that soundly-based engineering decisions may be reached with the minimum of wasted effort. In addition to simply detecting potential failures, the system should also define what type of failure is developing; i.e., rotational, wedge, or dilational failures. Providing this data is the prime function of a stability monitoring system. Therefore, in an operating open pit mine, the instrumentation system must provide information which will have a direct bearing upon both the safety and the economics of the operation, as well as provide data which is pertinent to initial design, or to the re-design of slopes where developing instability is found to be a problem.6 It is possible to excavate pit slopes which will remain stable under extremely adverse conditions; however, such slopes would usually be so flat that they would tend to render the operation of a pit uneconomical which might otherwise be mined at a profit. On this basis, all practical pit slopes must be considered to be, to some ex- tent, unstable; if they are not, the design is too conservative and the mine is not returning its maximum profit. To reduce the problem to its fundamentals, one can simply state that the ideal pit slope design produces a slope which stands with zero maintenance for the entire life of the pit and then collapses into the final excavation as soon as the personnel and equipment have been removed. Such a design is impossible to achieve, but the fact remains that an efficient slope would hover on the edge of failure for the life of I the pit. As one retreats from this position, the profitability of the mine decreases because of an unduly conservative design.

In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. Ergonomics is the art and science that tries to understand the complex interrelationships among employees, their work environment, equipment, work methods and job demands. Coal and metal/nonmetal miners are exposed to a higher number of ergonomic risk factors than in non-mining occupations. In addition, studies have shown that these miners experience more degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis than comparable industrial populations. A general discussion of the risk factors that cause overexertion injuries and disorders will be presented. In addition, the basic principles of ergonomics will be discussed with specific cases to show how successful programs have been developed. A successful ergonomics program should simultaneously improve health and enhance productivity.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. In order to provide insights for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. underground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the potential for spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas. A two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system was simulated. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were generated from a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. In this study the effect of methane emissions from the mined coal seam, including the longwall face and overlying rider seam reservoirs on the gob gas distribution was considered. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low-temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory-scale spontaneous combustion studies. Unsteady state simulations were conducted and the effects of the coal’s apparent activation energy and reaction surface area on the spontaneous heating process were also examined. In the UK, powered supports are normally salvaged from longwall faces on completion of production, for reuse on the next unit. Where a spare set of supports are held, the salvaged supports are often stored in underground roadways awaiting installation. One mine in the UK extracts a 5m section, and holds two sets of 2x950t powered supports, each weighing approx. 35t and having closed dimensions of 8m long, 2.5 high and 1.75m wide. As the first set would not be required for over 12 months, and because of space limitations below ground, it was decided that the supports would be left in situ, the district sealed, and reopened at a later date for support salvage. The paper described the decision making process, and the inertisation of the sealed district utilising nitrogen generated on the mine surface and piped to the point of use. The re-entry and re-ventilation of the district are also described. The paper then goes on to describe in more detail the discovery of a spontaneous combustion event that occurred in the waste behind the powered supports, and its treatment and control using extra nitrogen brought to the mine by tanker and introduced at strategic locations along the faceline via boreholes, leading to a successful salvage and re-sealing.

Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives in underground coal mines. Of the inuse refuge alternatives, more than 95 percent are mobile refuge alternatives, with the remainder being built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives. Heat/humidity buildup has been one of the major concerns with mobile refuge alternatives. For BIP refuge alternatives, however, there is a lack of in-mine heat/humidity test data to determine the extent of heat and humidity buildup. To quantify heat/humidity buildup in BIP refuge alternatives, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of heat/humidity tests on a 60-person BIP refuge alternative with and without a borehole air supply. At various times during the year, tests were performed with cooled, heated or unconditioned borehole air to examine how various outdoor temperatures may affect the thermal conditions inside a BIP refuge alternative. The results show that the air supplied to a BIP refuge alternative may require heating or cooling, depending on the outside air temperatures and the temperature of the mine. For example, during tests with an external ambient temperature above 21 °C (70 °F) and a relative humidity of 90 percent, providing 13 °C (55 °F) dew point air at 775 scfm, which is slightly higher than the mandated flow rate of 12.5 scfm per person, kept the internal apparent temperature below the mandated 35 °C (95 °F). Results for each test case are presented.

"The personal dust monitor (PDM) (model PDM3700), as well as other electronic devices, can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) which can disrupt the operation of some proximity detection systems (PDSs). A 15 cm (6 inch) minimum separation distance between the miner-wearable component (MWC) of the PDS and the electronic device usually avoids these disruptions, but due to the amount of equipment on a miner’s belt and the method of wearing the PDM in some situations, this distance can be difficult to always reliably maintain. Another method of reducing EMI effects is utilizing magnetic field shielding. The shielding capability of several different materials was investigated by surrounding the PDM with the material and quantifying the EMI. A copper mesh pouch reduced the EMI from a PDM3700, allowing a minimum separation distance of 10 cm (4 inches) instead of 15 cm (6 inches) as shown in a previous study for an unshielded PDM. A MU-metal box had a better shielding effectiveness, as it further reduced the minimum separation distance to less than 7 cm (2.8 inches). Shielding reduced the EMI of the PDM with MU-metal providing better results than the copper mesh. These materials may be beneficial for shielding individual components of the PDM or for constructing a shielded pouch. However, before the advantages of a shielded pouch can be determined, the effects of just the shielding material (metal) on the PDS needs to be quantified. INTRODUCTION According to statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 43 miners have been fatally struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine (CMM) since 1984. In an effort to prevent future striking and pinning fatalities from occurring, proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been developed and are required on all operating CMMs in underground coal mines, with the exception of full-face CMMs, by 2018 (MSHA, 2015)."

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross-section within each rock layer; i.e., the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties, and factor of safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e., the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8° depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

Hypersonic tunnel boring (HTB) uses directed, high velocity projectile impacts to remove rock. HTB is highly independent of rock strength and targets hard, abrasive rock and variable rock environments. This paper discusses history, theory and presents test (2×2 m and .75×.5 m tunnels) field trial results and technical and economic evaluation. The HTB tests are compared against the historic ‘project REAM’ and the concept against tunnel boring machines and drill & blast in design studies for full-scale 12 m and 4.5×5.5 m tunnels. The positive results indicate that under these conditions HTB can replace Drill & Blast and Tunnel Boring Machines.

G.M. Philip and D.F. Watson The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write : "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accu¬mulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common. ? Kim Before replying to the comments by Philip and Watson, it is desirable to establish the original perspective of our paper, which was intended primarily for the practitioners of mining who possess a working knowledge of ordinary kriging. The paper tried to convey the following practical points: (1) there are circumstances in which one observes negative weights, (2) illustration of circumstances under which one can expect negative weights, (3) should one obtain a negative estimated grade, one can resort to elimination of negative weights using the technique outlined in the paper, and (4) one could normally select only the first layer of surrounding assays to estimate the block grade. Under such a perspective, most of the comments by Philip and Watson are irrelevant and misdirected. For example, the practitioners do not find it difficult to "interpret" the results of ordinary kriging, as evidenced by the fact that they have been using the results for nearly a decade. Nor are the practitioners concerned with discontinuities in estimated block grades due to changing neighborhood of assays during kriging. What matters to the practitioners is the fact that kriging does provide the best estimate among all the estimation tools available to them as of today. ?

Results of comprehensive trace element analyses of samples of Illinois #5 and #6 seam coals and the unquenched ashes obtained from gasification of these coals in a Lurgi reactor are reported and discussed. Areas where additional background information is needed for assessment of the environmental impact of trace element emissions from coal gasification are identified.
