This paper discusses the use of Conditional Simulation (CS) models to provide mill feed grade profiles for different time periods. The conventional approach of classifying block estimates as ore or waste generally does not adequately represent dilution, lost ore and the anticipated grade control data, including variability of mill feed from the pit and possible stockpiles. The detailed simulation of grade control practices can be done, but at the Pre- or Feasibility stage of the project may be impractical, since drawing dig limits on multiple benches is tedious and time consuming. Using the Feasibility Grade Control (FGC) method as developed by the Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG, University of Alberta-Edmonton), the CS models can be processed quickly to establish dilution and lost ore, and predict daily or short-term feed to the mill. The simulated nodes can be aggregated into selective mining units with adequate representation of likely geometries to be recovered from the pit, to mimic anticipated selectivity. An example from a large copper deposit is shown. The study provides an estimated stream of tonnages and grades fed to the plant by mining periods of interest and based on a specific mine design and schedule. The resulting cash flows support the economic and financial analyses of the Feasibility Study; also leads to improving mine schedules; and aids in developing blending schemes if necessary. INTRODUCTION The conventional approach of separating mineralized material into ore or waste categories does not always include a realistic amount of dilution and ore loss. Also, often it does not provide a good estimate of the grade that will be fed to the mill. If the grade control estimates are unbiased, they will over the long run represent the long-term average of grades fed to the mill; but the anticipated variability of mill feed from the pit and stockpile sources may be misrepresented. Some references on traditional grade control implementations can be found in Chunnett (1982); Davis et al. (1989); Srivastava et al. (1992); and Nowak (1992). Alternative methods based on economic variables improved significantly on the purely grade-based control methods, see Douglas et al. (1994). Further developments involved the use of geostatistical conditional simulations (CS) and profit models, which in several cases have been successfully implemented (Aguilar and Rossi, 1996; Rossi, 1997; Deutsch et al., 2000; Norrena and Deutsch, 2002; Neufeld, 2005; Jewbali and Dimitrakopoulos, 2009). But they can be impractical, mostly due to the lack of understanding of the methodology involved; even if semi-automatic dig limit drawing is implemented, there is always a need for is tedious and time consuming checking and corrections, even if using a single profit model derived from the simulated grades.

I.- In order to keep pace feeding its fast growing population, Mexico with only about 20% of its surface suitable for intensive agriculture, will need the application of modern foodgrowing techniques. To assure greater crop yields it will be necessary to apply more fertilizers than used at present (yearly average of 29 Kgs/hectare)** For its fertilizers production Mexico still depends mostly on imports of phosphate concentrates from Florida, U.S.A., Morocco and Spain. To reduce or eliminate this dependence on foreign providers, the Consejo de Recursos Minerales -a Federal Government exploration Institute- started in 1974 an exhaustive exploration program for phosphate deposits more amenable to commercial exploitation than the phosphatic limestones contained within the La Caja Formation of Upper Jurassic, found along the Sierra Madre Oriental. After studying literature on the origin and deposition of marine phosphate and visits to deposits in Florida, U.S.A., the Baja California peninsula was selected as most favorable for starting this program because of its geologic and sedimentary history and also for its geographic location, where the cold California and warm Counterequatorial currents meet. Exploration activities executed by FORNOS, S. A. (1956) led to the disco very of low grade phosphate (3 to 5% P2O5) in the recent beach sands along the Bahia de Magdalena (Fig. # 1). In his doctoral thesis Bruno D'Anglejan Chatillon (1965) reports the presence of nodular phosphate on the continental shelf, between Isla Margarita and the Vizcaino peninsula. He estimated reserves of up to 1.5 million tons. A Mexican-American marine exploration company attempted in 1966 the evaluation of this deposit with negative results.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

The use of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in most of the operations in by-product molybdenum flotation comes with safety concerns and, in some instances, a high reagent cost. Engineered solutions at the various operations where NaHS is used have reduced the possibility ofH2S gas evolution immensely. However, the threat of exposure remains, and this, coupled with the high dosages of NaHS consumed, supports the continued search for alternative depressants. This paper focuses on efforts to study the applicability of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (DCMT), an organic depressant, as an alternative to NaHS. Benchscale rougher flotation results for samples from the Sierrita Cu–Mo plant showed the best DCMTperformance at 8 kg/t of DCMT and pH=10.5 with 30 min of shear conditioning and 10 min of flotation conditioning time. The Aminpro plant model simulation confirmed that DCMT with 4–8 kg/t under certain shearing and conditioning times achieved superior or equivalent Mo–Cu separation efficiencies when compared to NaHS.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

Well designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage on-road hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. However, practically designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve. Poorly designed and built roads exhibit high rolling resistance - a 1% increase in road rolling resistance can typically reduce speed on ramp by as much as 10% - and on the flat by up to 26%. In the current economic climate, investment and operating decisions come under scrutiny. In the long run, this scrutiny returns improved efficiencies and leaner, healthier operations. The focus of this evolving evaluation process should and will certainly fall on haulage operations ? simply by virtue of their contribution to overall cost of operations ? often in excess of 50% of total costs for deep open-pit mines. Whilst the end result - improved efficiency and reduced cost per ton hauled ? is not in itself problematic, it is the route, or process followed to achieve these savings that needs to be carefully managed. We can be guided on this journey by our understanding of how a road design is developed, and, critically, the interplay between a good design and safe, cost efficient haulage. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for more safe and efficient haulage systems, and the truck manufacturers? requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. These developments have been paralleled by the need to minimize haulage hazards, both from a health and safety perspective. Whilst improved mine haul road design does indeed reduce haulage accidents, recognition also needs to be given to human factors which are a significant contributor to haulage accidents. The human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design. It is often easier break the link between the interactive effects which may lead to accidents than trying to predict and reduce human error. These human factor interactive effects include the geometric, structural and functional design components and to prevent an accident or reduce the severity of its consequences, a road should be more accommodating to human error. The more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act. The most serious safety problems encountered in U. S. underground coal mines today are related to the roof bolting operation. Also, roof bolting is usually the operation which limits coal production of the section. The purpose of my paper is to review some of the research, developments, and new ideas related to roof bolting. Many of these ideas have originated at. coal mines or with manufacturers. Most of the research on fundamental improvements has been funded by, and is a part of, the excellent and broad plans of the Bureau of Mines.

This section is unique to the Handbook in that it is the only section that deals with underground excavations for nonmining purposes. The editors were of the opinion that the section should be incorporated because the subject matter covered by the chapters is closely related to mining, and many mining engineers are currently involved in these activities. As we enter the decade of the 1990s activities in this category will increase, enhancing the relevance and utility of the material discussed. As the population increases, especially in metropolitan areas, the necessity to go underground will be greater. At the present time, not only are subsurface shopping malls and pedways connecting buildings becoming commonplace, but structures as diverse as the Civil and Mining Engineering Building on the University of Minnesota campus, a road-and-fleet maintenance facility in Multnomah County, OR, and even an ice cream parlor (Dairy Queen) in northern Wisconsin have been constructed underground. Placing utilities below the surface has numerous advantages and is now customary. Rapid transit and highways through tunnels in urban areas have been the norm for many years, but subterranean stormwater reservoirs, power plants, industrial warehouses, and food storage silos are relatively new innovations. The philosophy of underground defense installations is ancient, but their requirements and designs have trans-formed radically as technology advances. The use of under-ground space for disposition of wastes is modern, since it is recently that environmental concerns and waste disposal costs have assumed increased significance.

A recent development in underground drilling has been the introduction of the down-the-hole drill, an old and very familiar tool to the surface operator. The idea of moving such a rig underground is not new. Tests were conducted at INCO in Canada and Mt. Isa, Australia in the early 1960's, and St. Joe used one for underground exploration in their Missouri lead mines in the mid-1960's. However, the trend to full scale production programs did not start until the mid-1970's. The first successful North American test was at INGO in early 1973. This led to a large-scale pillar recovery and open stoping program which en¬compassed 25 drilling units by mid-1976. Meramec Mining Company tested a unit using air boosted up to 200 psi (140, 000 kg(m2) in the summer of 1973 which by 1976 led to an open stope and pillar drilling program using 12 units. By mid-1976, production units using boosted air were also in use at Pilot Knob in Missouri and at St. Joe in Balmat, New York. Experimental and utility units were in use in several other mines and down-the-hole drills were being seriously considered for at least one major new underground mine.

Surface subsidence that results from longwall mining can be large magnitude and can affect significant areas. Conventional methods for subsidence monitoring include leveling, global positioning system (GPS), and photogrammetric surveys. Remote sensing techniques, including aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanning, and satellite-based differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR), are also used to measure deformation associated with subsidence. DInSAR data are different than data from conventional subsidence surveys. Images capture data over large areas (hundreds of kilometers), and each pixel (data point) in an image quantifies the average displacement over an area of square meters. DInSAR data can have fairly high time resolution; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.

ABSTRACT The pervasiveness of high-fidelity video games raises expectations of quality, detail, and lighting in virtual reality (VR) applications. However, high-quality models of mining equipment and environments are often not readily available, and developers may not be familiar with the latest techniques, such as physically based rendering (PBR). Because a consistent aesthetic is critical for maintaining immersion and controlling visual stimuli in research as well as in training, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) created an asset development workflow. This paper details this workflow, including precision modeling and PBR techniques as well as a rigorous review process. It also describes lessons learned in the creation of photorealistic VR assets. BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) describes the simulated experience generated by an assemblage of hardware and software that are used to immerse the user. Over many years VR developers targeted the development of virtual environments (VE) toward various purposes: entertainment, the treatment of phobias [1], rehabilitation [2], and training [3]. A large part of the VE development includes digital assets, where digital assets refer to the non-programmed elements including 3D models, audio, and user interface. Because vision provides nearly 10Mbps of data [4] and accounts for the majority of all sensory input combined [5], a focused effort on asset appearance in VEs is warranted. Furthermore, research has shown that higher-resolution imagery increases search performance and training transfer, necessitating high-fidelity assets [6, 7]. In addition to being visually appealing, it is important that the assets and environment are also dimensionally accurate and consistent in order to elicit appropriate responses from the end users as they interact with and among these items [8, 9]. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed VEs and digital assets under several research projects over the course of the last two decades [10, 11, 12, 13]. This work has provided researchers with a strong knowledge base for digital asset development. However, the assets themselves have had limited reuse value. Due to the extended timeframes and limited scope of these projects, the previously developed assets are not consistent in visual quality and dimensional accuracy. Moving forward, researchers wanted to minimize future development time and use of resources as well as adopt new asset development tools and game engine technology. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to document a new asset development workflow including geometry, materials, UV layout, and shader implementation combined with review steps in order to produce high-fidelity simulation assets that are accurate with consistent characteristics, using repeatable methodologies that are well documented.

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. Dry coal separation technology has particular advantages in the applications in arid and cold regions, or low rank coal separation. The hazardous pollutants in low rank coals can not be efficiently removed by conventional wet coal separation processes because a considerable amount of porose and easily friable low rank coals suffer serious particle size degradation problems in water. In this paper, a novel dry coal separation method with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite is put forward for dry coal beneficiation. The magnetic fly ash used in this study was derived from fly ash obtained as a byproduct of coal combustion. The vibration?s effect on the uniformity and stability of a magnetic fly ash air-fluidized bed was studied. The 6×0.5 mm dry coal separation results with a vibrated air-fluidized bed of magnetic fly ash and magnetite showed that the probable error E value of separation is 0.06-0.08 t/m3.

"In response to a severe regional drought and in preparation for the further decline of water levels in Southern Nevada’s Lake Mead, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) built a new intake system to ensure water supply to Las Vegas and its surrounding communities. In 2015, design began on the Low Lake Level Pumping Station (L3PS) that will move the water from this lower intake, ensuring operability of the water delivery system despite these declining lake levels. The L3PS Project includes a 159-meter-deep shaft, a large underground chamber, and 34-each 152-meter-deep, 2.4-meter-diameter drilled well shafts to be constructed in highly faulted and fractured ground. The Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method was chosen to facilitate early contractor involvement in the design process to address the significant challenges and risks anticipated on this US$650 million Project. This paper describes the CMAR selection process; the CMAR involvement during design and benefits resulting from that involvement; and the unique collaborative effort among the owner, engineer, program manager and CMAR used to evaluate and select the best design approach, preferred underground construction methods, and coordinated geotechnical baseline report. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND NEED Seven of the United States’ western states rely heavily on the Colorado River and its tributaries for their water supply. The primary source of water for the Colorado River is winter snow that falls in the mountains ringing the Colorado River Basin. Flows in the Colorado River vary significantly from year to year, depending on the amount of snow and rain deposited in the basin. Beginning in the year 2000 and continuing to the present, snowfall has been well below documented historical averages and Colorado River flows have diminished."

A mine fire is one of the most challenging safety issues facing a mine operator and can occur at any location underground. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Twentymile Coal Mine, CO, conducted in-mine experiments to determine the capability of high-expansion foam for addressing underground fires. The tests were conducted in sloping entries with high-capacity diesel-powered foam generators. The following results were observed: a well-designed, maintained and properly operated high-expansion foam generator can propagate a foam plug hundreds of feet in steep upward-sloping (20%) multiple entries against a ventilation pressure; stoppings and partitions designed to contain the foam plug in upward-sloping entries must be substantially constructed; and the predicted quantity of foam concentrate can be significantly less than the actual amount used, due to foam losses, such as bubble breakage on dry surfaces. This paper describes the production of high-expansion firefighting foam and discusses the in-mine experimental tests and results.

In February 2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) commissioned its first full-scale ultra fine grinding (UFG) plant to supplement existing roaster concentrate treatment capacity. This process involves the fine grinding of refractory pyritic concentrate to 10µm, followed by direct cyanide leaching for the recovery of gold. By this means gold is economically extracted from the concentrate without the need to first oxidise the host pyrite. This paper details the history of the project from initial laboratory testwork comparing possible treatment options, to current performance of the 12 tph plant. This includes the cost comparison of the major treatment options, the laboratory and pilot scale UFG performance, the UFG mill selection, cyanide leaching of UFG product, commissioning and plant performance to date.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (the pre-eminent global initiative for institutional investor collaboration on climate change) groups the business risks (and opportunities) related to climate change into four categories: 1. Regulatory risks from tightening legislation (and opportunities for companies that can make the carbon market work for them), e.g. rising costs for carbon and energy-intensive processes. 2. Competitive risks & opportunities generated by a possible decline in customer demand for carbon/energy intensive products (and opportunities from a consequent rise in demand for efficient / low carbon products). 3. Reputational risks from perceived inaction on climate change (and benefits to those perceived to be ?solutions providers?). 4. Physical risks from changes to climatic patterns, e.g. asset damage from extreme weather events; project delays; water scarcity; resource risks as certain crops become no longer viable in certain areas and new supply chains become necessary; and potential human and socio-political impacts. All of these are already having repercussions for businesses in certain sectors and geographies. The understanding of specific impacts of climate change is still evolving but it is clear that climate change will have a material impact on the value of many businesses, either directly or indirectly. Many commentators and analysts consider that rising energy costs are likely to represent the most direct and immediate investment risk that climate change and the resulting regulatory responses will create for business in the near term. However, it is already possible to identify numerous examples of competitive and reputational risks and opportunities that are leading to significant value creation or destruction in business: the success of the Toyota Prius; the rush by the UK?s leading supermarket retailers to ?green? their brands; and the surging fortunes of companies involved in the manufacture of renewable energy generation equipment, are all manifestations of this trend. In addition, the potential physical impacts of climate change are also making themselves felt in certain sectors: an example is the Australian wine industry, suffering after an extreme and prolonged period of drought. THE PROJECT This paper describes a project undertaken for a multinational mining company to examine the physical risks from climate change across its international business operations. The study addressed 163 components of the business and included operating sites (mines, smelters, and refineries), key transport routes (road and rail) and port links. The inclusion of the transport networks and ports is extremely important; key transport routes (e.g. a key railway link) may often be impacted (e.g. by flooding) far more than individual sites due to their large geographic exposure and multiple potential failure points. Extreme weather events causing loss of life and major economic damage continue to be front page news. According to the World Meteorological Organization, January to July 2007 ?was marked by record weather extremes in many regions across the world.? Inevitably, the associated phenomena are starting to impact business and investments, not so much as deal breakers, but in changing the parameters of risk management and the approaches required to devise mitigation measures. EXAMPLES OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS No one event can be presented as directly attributable evidence of climate change, however climate change projections suggest that the frequency and severity of many extreme weather events can be expected to increase in a warming world. In August 2003, a heat wave struck Europe, with temperatures as high as 42°C (108°F). As summer temperatures in much of northern Europe rarely exceed 30°C (86°F), the area was unprepared for the disaster, and many thousands of deaths occurred. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast of the United States, forcing the effective abandonment of south-eastern Louisiana (including New Orleans) for up to two months and damaging oil wells that resulted in increased oil prices. Katrina killed over 1,800 people and caused at least $75 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest natural disasters of all time. This was followed in September, by Hurricane Rita which left 119 people dead along the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing $9.4 billion in damage. In January 2006, hundreds of people were killed when Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia experienced the coldest weather for decades. In summer 2007, dramatic floods in the south central region of England, UK left 350,000 people without drinking water and many without electricity. Transport infrastructure was severely disrupted; combined with floods which occurred earlier in the summer in Yorkshire (North England), the damage is estimated to total over £2 billion. ASSESSING RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE To date, only a minority of companies have attempted to quantify the risks from climate change. However, investors are seeking greater disclosure of climate change related risks and opportunities and it is expected companies that can demonstrate they are prepared for climate change will attract higher market valuations. Climate Change Threats A variety of climate change threats were examined for their potential to have a potential measurable impact on the mining company?s business operations. Those considered most significant were included in the study and are shown in Table 1 (see Appendix A). Certain threats can be considered as being cyclical in nature and the future predictions may suggest a change in the frequency and severity of such events (e.g. storms/hurricanes, rainfall, drought). However other threats are associated with a gradual change over time (e.g. loss of glaciers, loss of permafrost, sea level rises). A slightly different approach is needed to address this differing nature of the threats, as described subsequently. Climatic Regions Much of the research and data associated with climate change is collected and reported on a regional basis. An example of the climate change impacts predicted for a number of climatic regions is shown in Table 2 (see Appendix A).

The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.
