The Chino mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant County in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership two-thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one-third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The Chino Ore Body The Chino ore body is a widely varied deposit of rock types and contains intrusive stocks and sediments. The stocks contain chalcocite in a matrix of quartz, mica, and feldspar. Much of the feldspar is altered to clay. Some of these stocks are enriched with native copper. The sediments contain chalcopyrite associated with gangue minerals including magnetite, pyrite, garnet chlorite, and epidote. The contact of the stock and sediment is heavily altered to chlorite and clay. The stock ores contain economic quantities of molybdenite. The operating work index of Chino ore varies from 5 to 20 kwh/ton and averages 8.5 kwh/ton. The ore head to the concentrator averaged 0.81% copper and 0.010% molybdenum. Fifteen percent of the total copper head exists as nonsulfide mineralization.

The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority is implementing the Anacostia River Projects component of its Long-Term CSO Control Plan, including 21 kilometers of 3.7- to 7-meter-diameter CSO near-surface diversion storage/conveyance structures and flood relief, pressurized-face, soft ground tunnels at a maximum depth of 65 meters. This paper describes a project-specific soil grouping system that is primarily based on soil characteristics for tunneling derived from tests including Atterberg limits, grain size, swelling, mineralogy, triaxial, pressure meter, and consolidation, which differentiates the project from past area tunnel projects using descriptive systems based primarily on area geology.

Barite, the sulfate of barium, occurs in many geological environments in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. The commercial deposits of barite may be classified into three major types. 1. Vein and cavity fillings that occur in rock fractures, along bedding planes, and in various solution structures. 2. Bedded deposits in which barite occurs as the principal mineral or cementing agent in stratiform bodies in sedimentary rocks. 3. Residual deposits occurring in unconsolidated material formed by the weathering of preexisting rocks. The geologic characteristics of each type of deposit are of fundamental importance to the successful search, development, and economic use of barite deposits.

Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. The U.S. coal industry has long utilized the pillar-extraction mining technique as a method for maximizing coal recovery. Like longwall mining, it causes large-scale movements that progressively propagate from mine-level to the ground surface and may affect the groundwater regime, surface drainage and surface structures. The U.S. Department of Energy, in an effort to foster in- creased use of total extraction mining techniques, has recognized the need for a better understanding of these movements that will lead to a greater compatibility between coal mining and present and future land use. As part of that goal, GAI Consultants, Inc. is currently in- stalling instrumentation to monitor the ground movements associated with pillar extraction mining at Kitt Energy Corporation's No. 1 mine in northern West Virginia.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.

Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Flotation behavior, of magnesite and dolomite pure minerals was studied separately. Rice bran oil (a source of fatty acid ) was used as a collector for both minerals . The aim of this study is to find a separating zone in the flotation of these pure minerals to be used in the separation of their mixture. Factors affecting the flotation process, such as pH and collector, were studied. It was found that magnesite can be separated, from its mixture with dolomite, in the pH range of 5-7. At this pH range flotation recovery of dolomite reaches~98% where magnesite reaches ~20% only. Besides, the effect of collector concentration on the flotation shows that the separation of magnesite from dolomite is feasible at a collector concentration of 3x10-4 M. At such concentration, dolomite recovery reaches ~98%, where magnesite reaches 25%. The differences in the flotation behavior of dolomite and magnesite were investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms of rice bran oil on magnesite and dolomite surfaces. The adsorption study indicates that while there is an excessive adsorption on dolomite surface, the adsorption density on magnesite was restricted to be lower than monolayer capacity. The adsorption behavior of dolomite and magnesite was discussed in the light of their solubility and crystal structure. It was found that due to the higher solubility of dolomite than magnesite, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are available and more reactive on dolomite surface increasing collector adsorption. In addition, it was indicated that dolomite mineral has a crystal lattice structure more compatible to the geometry of the fatty acid carboxylic group than magnesite. However, the adsorption of collector on dolomite surface is more compact and more regular than on magnesite surface.

Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

In spite of the many new insulating materials, both synthetic and manufactured, that have been put on the market since the end of World War II, and notwithstanding the many millions of dollars applied to the development of synthetic mica, natural block mica1 is still a most indispensable insulator in various electronic components. It will remain so, barring some spectacular break-through in research that might provide a substitute fully acceptable as a replacement for mica in all of its superior properties. But this is not to say the future for mica is assured, or free from serious problems. Technological advances have created problems requiring a solution to be found if future requirements are to be filled.

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

The uranium industry has made a dramatic turnaround in the past three years that even the most optimistic economist was not willing to predict during the uranium downswing of the 1990s. Uranium reached a 30-year low in February 2001 of $6.50/lb. By the end of February 2006 it had soared to $38.50/pound. This nearly 600% increase in the uranium spot price within 4 years dwarfed the increase in gold price that has barely mustered a 100% increase. The initial slow rise from $6.50 in February 2001 to $10.75 in April 2003 (fig. 1) was primarily driven by the decrease in the value of the dollar. Since then several factors have contributed to the soaring price: (1) The awakening of many to the simple fact that uranium supply has not met demand for several years and that the world’s stockpiles are being drawn down, (2) How sharply this fragile supply can be impacted by disasters at the world’s major uranium production facilities, such as a) the flooding of the McArthur River Mine in the spring of 2003, b) fires at Olympic Dam, c) the potential that Rossing, with an annual capacity of 4000 tonnes uranium might close by 2007, (3) the withdrawal of Tenex from the HEU (highly enriched uranium) feed agreement, and (4) the announcement by the Chinese of their intent to build 30 new nuclear reactors.

An extensive programme of ground instrumentation and observation was carried out for the West Duff in Outfall Sewer tunnel project prior to and during construction, to establish the performance characteristics of the rock through which the tunnel and appurtenant openings were dug and to examine the nature of the lining-to-ground interaction. The existence of high horizontal residual ground stresses was confirmed, and values established by overcoring. Rock deformations and stress changes were monitored during tunnelling. Permanent stress and strain monitoring devices were set into the final lining and these are continuing to operate. INTRODUCTION The site is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Pickering, some 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Toronto, Canada where a variable thickness of glacial or interglacial sediments overlies bituminous shale bedrock of. the Collingwood Formation which is lower Ordovician age. Approximately 50 feet (15 metres) of glacial cover exists at the shaft, though this thins abruptly at the regressing cliffed shoreline such that several small areas of exposed bedrock exist in the lakebed. The general location, overall geological section and detailed site plan and profile are illustrated in Figs.1,2 and 3 respectively. General properties of the rock as established during an extensive test drilling and site investigation programme are listed in Table 1, while stress determination by USER overcoring stress meter device are given in Table ll. These data formed the basis of analyses which were done to examine the intended outfall design, and to detail the construction procedure and the observational instrumentation programme.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13.1 km overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design ended up with 5.4 mps belt speed, 1000 mm belt width to convey 1350tph, and 7 mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30 mtpa (million ton per annum). Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4 200 tph satisfactorily.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. Age of mineralization and igneous episodes

This paper will describe how Newmont Mining Corporation continues to improve the economics of the heap leaching process for precious metals recovery.

Due to the rapidly increasing production rates and deepening of mine working areas, there is a drastic rise in the number of thermal issues to be addressed for maintaining a safe mine environment. As high temperatures and humidity in underground mines could affect the health and performance of workers, and ultimately the production rate, it is necessary to provide a properly controlled safe environment. The backfilling of stopes in metal, non-metal mines results in different thermophysical properties for the hanging, side and foot walls, modeling of which is not provided by any existing mine climate simulation software. This paper presents the modeling of such a single stope using the MULTIFLUX (MF) software, developed at University of Nevada, Reno. A special case is presented in this paper, where a case study from the Homestake mine in the US with a drift and ramp connected to a stope with high Virgin Rock Temperature (VRT) and various spot heat sources is modeled in MULTIFLUX and CLIMSIM, and the results are compared against each other. Another case is presented in which the stope of the previous cases is modeled with walls, each having a different set of thermophysical properties. These results are compared with the former results to analyze the effect of anisotropic properties.
