Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills A[O] or B[O] holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.

Coal is mined by both surface and underground methods and its extraction is normally characterized by numerous hazards that can lead to catastrophic accidents, which result in devastating effects such as injuries or fatalities, damage to mining assets, and destruction of mineral resources. These hazards exist due to the ability of coal to support combustion and its association with toxic, flammable, and explosive gases. Underground coal mining entails higher safety risks than opencast coal mining, chiefly because of issues relating to mine ventilation and mine collapse. Furthermore, coal mine collapses mostly occur due to crumbling of mining supports, especially in room and pillar mining systems. To avoid such adverse occurrences, safety management systems need to be in place. This study reviews the various technological safety systems and principles that are used for safe-rescue and self-escape of miners in underground coal fires, particularly in South Africa, using data obtained from Mines Rescue Services in Carltonville, South Africa. The outcome of the review shows that practising safety culture has been given priority across many South African underground coal mines through setting up safety management systems and encouraging workers to stay committed to safety principles.

Molten NaNO3-NaNO2-KNO3mixture is used as a heat transfer medium at high temperature. One of the most important properties of this mixture is the heat capacity. In the present work, the enthalpy change with temperature was measured by the drop calorimetric method to evaluate the heat capacity. The results are summarized as follows: The enthalpy of the mixture increased linearly with the temperature. From the slope of the line, the heat capacity was evaluated. The heat capacity of pure NaNO3, NaNO2and KNO3was 0.129,0.110 and 0.142 kJ/mol/K, respectively. These values are in fairly good agreement with the published data. In the binary and ternary systems, the molar additivity of heat capacity, which is well known as Neumann-Kopp’s law, was obtained. The heat capacity of HTS1and HTS2, which are well known ternary mixtures of practical use, were in the range of published data.

Xstrata has modified and improved on the solid state reduction of chromite (SRC) process that was pioneered by Showa Denko in Japan and previously used at Xstrata?s Lydenburg plant. The history of pre-reduction is a long one, with the SRC process being the first and only commercially successful one prior to Premus. Krupp developed the chromite direct reduction and the rotary hearth for the pre-reduction of chromite. However, these processes have not been successfully commercialised. The are a number of significant differences between Xstrata?s patented Premus and the original Consolidated Metallurgical Industries (CMI) process. These include, the use of lower cost anthracite fines as the reductant source together with the use of unactivated bentonite as the binding agent. In addition the use of oxygen as an energy source is used in Premus but not in the original CMI process. There was a fundamental change in the operational philosophy of the process in that while the original CMI process aimed to maximize metallization of the pellets, the Premus process seeks to maximize the energy output from the kiln while still achieving the required efficiencies and hence increasing furnace output. Premus is designed to reduce electrical energy consumption, provide high recoveries of metallic oxides, and utilizes low cost reductant and energy sources such as anthracite and oxygen respectively. Due to the fact that Premus is one of the most technologically advanced and competitive processes used today in the production of ferrochrome it was the process selected for Xstrata?s new ferrochrome facility, Project Lion, that is due to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2006 in the Steelpoort Valley in Mpumulanga, South Africa.

The determination of densimetric information to predict coal washabilities is an important step in characterising the feed material, as well as the performance of operating plants. However, traditional methods like float-and-sink analysis are hazardous and time-consuming. This is especially true for finer particle size ranges, where very long settling times are required in a medium. De Beers Technologies recently developed a density analyser, known as the RhoVol, for use on diamondiferous kimberlite. Operating over size ranges from 25 mm down to 3 mm, it can determine the mass, volume, density, size and shape of all the particles in a given population and is thus able to provide information about the densimetric distribution on a single particle basis. A study was carried out to compare uncalibrated and calibrated RhoVol results to densimetric and size data obtained using traditional zinc chloride float-sink procedures, for three different coal samples in the size range 3 mm to 8 mm. The results indicate that the RhoVol can be used to provide simple, rapid and safe size-by-washability information for coal, provided proper pre-calibration is done, mainly to account for the effects of particle porosity in the density determination. INFACON conjures up many things for many people. For the fortunate few who have been actively involved with this event since its inception, it brings back memories of far places, stimulating debates and above all, the people who have over the years contributed to the outstanding success of the Congress and who have added to the wealth of knowledge on all aspects of ferroalloys. The International Ferroalloy Congress (INFACON) has been held every three years since 1974. INFACON X will be held in Cape Town in February 2004. Simple arithmetic shows that next year?s Congress should in fact be INFACON XI. Thus, one Congress was skipped. INFACON 74, as the name implies, was held in 1974, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event was sponsored by the Ferro Alloy Producers? Association of South Africa (FAPA), the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM - Mintek as it is known today) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). You will see some of the same sponsors involved in INFACON X. Dr. Robbie Robinson, renowned academic and past president of the SAIMM, was the Chairman of the Organising Committee. The editor was Dr. Helen Glen. Anyone fortunate enough to possess a copy of the proceedings of this first Congress will agree that from a literary and technical perspective, it is still the benchmark for subsequent events. A unique feature of INFACON 74 was the use of rapporteurs (my first duty) to ensure that the discussions following the presentations were recorded (in direct speech) as accurately as possible. This involved time-consuming correspondence (can you imagine life before e-mail?) to all parts of the world between the author and the person posing the question, with the rapporteurs acting as go-betweens. It is understandable that the much-awaited proceedings only saw the light in 1975. The names recorded in the proceedings as the members of all six committees read like the who?s-who of the South African ferroalloy industry at the time: Dr. Peter Jochens, Mr. Harvey Reid, Mr. Piet Streicher, Prof David Howat, Mr. Sigurd Selmer-Olsen - to name but a few. The Congress was held in the new, very fashionable and upmarket Carlton Hotel in the CBD. In the Foreword of the proceedings, Dr. Robinson provides an insight into the event. Three hundred and thirty six delegates from twenty two countries attended the Congress, which was opened by the Honourable P.G.J. Koornhof, Minister of Mines. Again, the opening address makes fascinating reading. During the Congress an ad hoc committee was convened as the first International Committee on the Organisation of Ferroalloys Congresses, with representation from the main ferroalloy associations of the world. The following decisions were recorded: ? The Congress would be continued at three-yearly intervals under the name of INFACON ? Every third Congress would be held in South Africa ? NIM (Mintek) would provide the permanent secretariat. Six technical sessions were held, each preceded by a plenary address with a closing address by the session chairman. In all, thirty technical papers were presented. Prior to the closing address, a panel discussion on factors affecting the future of the ferrochromium industry provided stimulating debate in the form of a question-and-answer session. The hosting country for the next INFACON would be announced. Eventually, word got round that the next INFACON would be held in Japan. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the event was cancelled ? thus no INFACON 77. INFACON 80 was subsequently held in Lausanne, Switzerland from 12th to 16th October 1980. The event was organised by IFPEO, Institut des Producteurs de Ferro-Alliages d?Europe Occidentale. The Congress was officially opened by the President of IPFEO, Mr. R. Björklund, who was also President of the Organising Committee. The technical sessions were held in the Palais de Beaulieu. The Congress was well attended by 400 participants from 28 countries as well as 100 accompanying ladies. A total of four plenary addresses and 18 technical papers were presented. As with the first event, an international panel discussion (questions and answers) preceded the closing address. In his closing address, Dr. Louw Alberts, Chairman of the International Committee on Ferroalloys and President of NIM, presented an insight into the factors affecting growth in the industry and where growth was likely to take place. Twelve exhibitors had stands at the Congress. Attendees could choose from four post-event tours to Belguim/France (SADACEM/Compagnie Universelle d?Acetylene et d?Electro-Metallurgie), France (CUAEM), Finland (Outokumpu Oy) and Norway (Elkem Fiskaa plant).

The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.

A typical three-phase submerged-arc furnace for production of silicon metal and ferrosilicon has arc currents ~100 kA, phase voltages ~100 V and total furnace power ~10 - 60 MW. The arcs burn in gas filled cavities or "craters", where the main atomic components of the plasma mixture are silicon, oxygen and carbon. Two quite different simulation models for high-current AC arcs have been developed: the simple Channel Arc Model (CAM), and the more sophisticated Magneto-Fluid-Dynamic Model (MFD). These models have been described extensively and results reported at INFACON-8 and INFACON-9, respectively. The coupling between the arcs and the AC power source is described by a complete three-phase Electric Circuit Model. Recent numerical modelling studies of industrial AC arcs show that the boundary conditions at the cathode and anode are critical for the simulation results. A novel Cathode/Anode Sub-Model for high-current AC arcs that treats both cathode and anode indicates a completely different cathode behaviour than previously assumed. A cathode spot which serves a high-current electric arc is shown to be dominated by the energy impact from the arc. This leads to lower cathode fall voltage than obtained from previously developed models. The anode fall voltage is negative, as the main function of the potential barrier is to repel plasma electrons. The cathode spot is diffuse in the sense that the arc in fact contracts away from the cathode. Simulation results are compared to measurements on both industrial furnaces and smaller scale pilot furnaces. An important conclusion, supported by our arc studies, is that the arc length in silicon metal and ferrosilicon furnaces does not exceed 15 cm and the arc may burn anywhere on the electrode, not necessarily beneath the electrode tip.

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. "The advantages of using Nb and Ti-Nb coatings for improving the hardness and corrosion resistance of Ti6Al4V were investigated. It has been reported that Ti6Al4V used in orthopaedic implants tends to release toxic Al and V ions into the surrounding tissue. Thin layers of Nb and Ti-Nb were deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a laser metal deposition technique. The deposited material was analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behaviour of the deposited layers was investigated using a Metrohm Autolab PG Stat101 compact potentiostat at 25°C in simulated body fluid. A Vickers hardness system was used to study the mechanical properties. Both Nb and Ti-Nb coatings exhibited good metallurgical bonding with the substrate. The microstructure and the XRD analyses for the Nb system showed that the ??-Nb phase was most dominant, while the Ti-Nb system comprised a mixture of the ?? and ?? phases. The average hardness of the Ti6Al4V substrate was 350 HV0.3, with a slight increase for the Nb coating (363 HV0.3) and a much higher hardness from the Ti-Nb coating at 423 HV0.3. The corrosion results show that the deposited Nb was more corrosion-resistant in the solution than either the Ti6Al4V substrate or the Ti-Nb coating. IntroductionMetals such as CoCrMo, 316L stainless steel, and NiTi alloy are used for manufacturing biomedical implants because of their distinct properties, including low Young’s modulus and resistance to corrosion (Ryan, Pandit, and Apatsidis, 2006). These implants are required to remain in the body of the patient for many years. Due to a favourable combination of mechanical and corrosion properties, titanium (Ti) and its alloys have emerged as the material of choice for biomedical implants. Nevertheless, their use is not entirely without challenges. For example, in total hip replacement, surface degradation and release of metal debris from metal erosion caused by friction limit the service life of the implant (Oldani and Dominguez, 2012; Manivasagam, Dhinasekaran, and Rajamanickam, 2010). Ti6Al4V is generally regarded as the material of choice, but it has been found that over extended periods of time, the combination of surface corrosion and erosion releases toxic aluminium (Al) and vanadium (V) ions into the body (Khan, Williams, and Williams, 1996). This has led to the investigation of titanium alloys containing niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), tantalum (Ta), and molybdenum (Mo) as substitutes for the aluminium- and vanadium-containing Ti6Al4V (Okazaki et al., 1997)."

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."

In-pit crusher location selection has had an important role recently, since increasing diesel prices. One way of reducing the haulage costs is to shorten the truck haulage distance by bringing the truck dump point into the pit. This study covers the work done on the optimum crusher location definition for a company that produces aggregate near Izmir, a city of Turkey located in the west. This paper will discuss the effects of pit geometry and mine access requirements on optimum crusher location selection that are mainly based on the establishment of minimum haulage distance. The method will be introduced first and then the computer algorithm developed for this study will be discussed later in the paper. The location of underground positions in mines has usually fallen to their survey department's. Their usual tasks include: ? installation of a high-precision peg network like the National Survey grid as beacons ? offset measurements to the sidewalls, and sometimes hangingwall and footwalls, of development tunnels and excavations ? offsetting of stoping panels for the calculation of face ? advance and the square meterage of area removed. Other departments build their observations into the plans produced by the surveyors. If more precision is required, they ask the surveyors to `elevate' their points with a theodolite. Apart from the survey peg network and `elevations' these measurements are usually planer measurements suitable for producing plans, sections and projection sheets. When the only representation medium was a sheet of paper or transparency, this was perfectly suitable. However the development of CAD models of the workings has changed all this. Full 3D representation is not properly catered for in the tool sets in current use, and needless hours are spent converting analogue-type observations into digital form. The basic survey models need to be augmented by the observations of other disciplines that are also required to locate positions underground. These include: ? the need for geologists to plott their mapping and ? borehole logs into 3D space ? the need for samplers to position their sample points accurately because the geostatistical models are biased and inaccurate ? the need for stoping width recorders to position their thickness observations to prevent errant evaluation and bonuses ? the need for rock engineers to place their mappings into 3D to build true geotechnical models to manage geotechnical stresses ? the need for production officials to receive updated face ? positions during the month so that they can manage the ? production and utilize their resources properly. This paper covers a new method of positioning profiling points to a suitable degree of accuracy. I believe the method is sufficiently simple and cheap for all to use. Historical methods Platinum and gold orebodies, especially in South Africa, are generally narrow tabular deposits. This made them suitable for depicting on a 2D medium like paper. The determination of stoping or face widths was not a problem, as the ore is removed in a single stoping process. Such 2D representations could be easily positioned using tape offsetting between survey pegs or points tied in from survey pegs. Problems of dip were handled by using 'Stope Sheets' which chose a best fit projection for the whole area depicted or by using true dip section sheets for inclined tunnels. Rolling reef and potholes were the common areas of difficulty. Most mines now model their orebody and plan the extraction in computer graphics. This means that the representation of the current workings has to change to support this trend. It now becomes a truly 3D problem. Mining officials find it inconvenient to have their actual workings in single-line depictions while their orebody is depicted with top and bottom contacts and the planned tunnels in 3D shapes. Geological models which form the basis for the resource model and planning process are often out of date, as the updating process is slow. The geological mapping has to be plotted onto sections and plans. These are then digitized into graphics by a draughtsman and checked by the geologist. Only then does the interpretation and model update take place. Potential methods to create 3D 'Actuals' Global positioning systems (GPS) Surface mines have been blessed by the advent of GPS technology. These simple-to-operate pieces of equipment and compatible software make it possible for all types of mine employees to locate themselves, and therefore to locate their observations. GPS are often inexpensive and give an acceptable degree of accuracy. Only in deep pits or close to the highwalls are observations hindered. Such technology cannot however, work underground. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) GPR is reported to be very useful for estimating the positions of potholes and faults. However it is still considered as providing an estimate, not a definite measurement. GPR is good for seeing into solid rock, not into open spaces. Inertia reading devices Experiments with inertia reading devices have been conducted on the mines. They were the forerunners of GPS for military guidance systems, and were even used for city navigation in the early 70s. They do however work best with heavy or fast-spinning gyros. Anglogold Ashanti's attempt to use them were discontinued in the mid-90s when the developers asked for an additional few million rand for a device that would weigh more than 12 kg and have a limited operational life.

Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, while in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600 - 1000° C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed . For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidised bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidised bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. Laboratory-scale experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of ladle slag composition on the decreasing behaviour of aluminum content in steel, i.e., reoxidation of molten steel in contact with slag, using a vertical tube furnace. The steel composition and the slag system chosen were for ultra low carbon and CaO-Al2O3-FeO-MnO-MgO based to simulate ULC steel grades. It has been observed that the reoxidation rate shows a good relationship with (T. Fe) content in slag. In case of (T. Fe) content higher than 1.5 weight per cent, the reoxidation rate increases linearly with increasing (T. Fe) content. For a given (T. Fe) content, it decreases with the increasing (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. However, in the case of (T. Fe) content lower than 1.5 weight percent, no particular relationships are observed between the reoxidation rate and (T. Fe) content or the (CaO)/(Al2O3) ratio of the slag. These results were used to propose for an aim a slag composition for the ULC steel grades in a steelmaking plant. I had the good fortune to attend the above Conference which was held in Kanpur, India, on 11-15 December, 1995. The Conference was held in honour of Professor P.C. Kapur of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur. Professor Kapur was one of the early students of legendary teacher and researcher of mineral beneficiation, Professor Doug Fuerstenau of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. I have attended my fair share of international conferences and this one certainly rated at the top of the list on several counts. With an open-hearted hospitality which one might almost take for granted once you have spent some time in India, the organizers of the Conference looked after every need of their guests, including breakfast and transport to and from the conference centre, wonderful traditional lunches and dinners and outstanding entertainment in the evenings. The papers were generally of a high standard, and debate flowed enthusiastically and freely. Several international guests delivered seminal papers in their fields as discussed below.
