As part of the Bureau of Mines subactivity in secondary resource recovery and to expand the Nation's mineral base, the Tuscaloosa Research Center made characterization and preliminary beneficiation studies of the waste residues from various coal-conversion processes: from pilot plant tests of the Synthane process for coal gasification, the Synthoil process for coal liquefaction, and the solvent-refined coal (SRC) process for sulfur removal from coal. Those coal conversion processes selected for this study were based on the availability of pilot plant samples. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical examinations of the wastes made to determine the mineral content prior to physical beneficiation tests indicated that in addition to significant quantities of carbon, some trace elements offer potential for concentration.

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 68,458 acres of the Clan Alpine Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-102) which covers 196,128 acres in Churchill County, NV. Most of the area studied is underlain by Tertiary volcanic rocks. In the northeast corner of the study area, an upthrown block of Triassic sedimentary rocks partially extends into the area. The study area is probably part of a large eroded caldera. No major mines or active claims are within the study area. Field investigations included examination of workings in Starr Canyon, historical and recent mining activity near the mouth of Florence Canyon, other mining claims, and anomalous zones delineated by data from Great Basin GEM Joint Venture studies. No mineral resources were identified, but sample results indicate one significant mineralized zone situated along a northwest trend between the head of Starr Canyon and the head of Cherry Creek may contain precious metal resources. Further investigation of this zone is warranted.

The dust exposure of the longwall shearer operator is usually determined by his position relative to the cutting drums. The dust generated during cutting may travel up-wind, against the primary airflow, and be carried out into the walkway where it can contaminate the intake air for as much as 10 feet outby the shearer operator's controls. Thus, both head and tail drum operators are exposed to un-acceptably high levels of air-borne respirable dust. One Solution The latest generation of long-wall shearers has features that make the use of radio remote or umbilical (hard wire) remote control relatively easy to implement. Remote control can enable shearer operators to control machines from positions that are less dusty than normal control stations. With either type, the head-drum operator can now control the shearer from a position up to 20 feet on the intake-air side of the shearer, while the tail-drum operator's station is now located across from the head drum.

High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

The use of vertical surface degasification boreholes with bleeder systems and the use of a timbered bleeder system to degasify gob areas were studied by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes three gob degasification studies conducted in the Pittsburgh coalbed. One study was conducted to determine the number of panels degasified with one large borehole. The study showed that the borehole provided degasification for three panels. Another study was conducted during the retreat of a 35-acre panel with a single-entry and a two-entry bleeder system and a large surface borehole. A major portion of methane emitted from the panel was carried away by the bore-hole, leaving the bleeder entries relatively free of methane. The last study was made to determine the effectiveness of a timbered bleeder system. The bleeder entries successfully degasified the gob area when enough entries were available and adequate pressure was available to force the air through roof falls.

Stimulated vertical boreholes are an effective means of removing gas from coalbeds in advance of mining. This Bureau of Mines report examines the coal mine roof damage potential of stimulation treatments. Twenty-two Government-sponsored stimulation treatments have been mined through to determine the effects on the coalbed and roof strata. Vertical fractures in the coalbed were discernible for most treatments and horizontal fractures were present for about half of the stimulations. Sand-propped vertical fractures were usually short in lateral extent. Evidence of stimulation fluid movement could generally be traced beyond the maximum extent of sand-filled fractures when fluorescent paint was added to the treatment fluids. The maximum lateral extent for a sand-filled vertical fracture was 416 ft and a paint-coated vertical fracture extended 630 ft. Horizontal fractures were generally found within bedding planes, most commonly on top of the coalbed. The maximum lateral extent for a horizontal fracture was 265 ft at a coalbed depth of 630 ft. Horizontal fractures have been found to occur as deep as 1,145 ft. Penetration of strata overlying coalbeds was observed in nearly half of the treatments intercepted. Most of these occurrences have been interpreted to be penetrations into preexisting joints. No roof falls or adverse mining conditions were encountered that could be attributed to the stimulations.

Provide coal mine shafts/slopes with an optimum coal mine shaft fire and smoke protection system composed of reasonably-priced, reliable hardware. Approach Accident and injury data indicate that a relatively low percentage (5%) of underground coal mine fires occur in shafts or slopes. Nevertheless, shaft or slope fires are extremely serious because they block critical escape routes for miners. That also can happen when combustion products resulting from fires in other mine areas contaminate shahs and slopes. Seeking the optimum configuration for a shaft/slope fire and smoke protection systems, the Bureau of Mines gathered data on the performance of existing fire detection devices and signal telemetry systems In several mines, and analyzed the generic protection needs of the U.S. underground coal mining industry. The optimum system developed by the Bureau provided an adequate number of detectors, a wide area of coverage, and an extensive data acquisition, analysis, display, and storage capability. This system. recommended for fabrication and in-mine testing, consisted of a microcomputer-controlled master panel located in the test mine's slope hoist room, and four remote units. Two of the remote units were placed on the surface atop upcast ventilation shafts, a third was situated underground near the slope bottom, and a fourth was installed at the slope top in intake air.

In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

This report contains a summary of Phase I and complete results of Phase II portions of a study of geologic factors associated with roof falls in mines on the Pocahontas #3 coal seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. Principal objectives of Phase I was the selection of five mines that best portrayed the spectrum of roof and mining conditions and Phase II consisted of a measurement and documentation program for each of the five mines. The documentation measurement program included reconnaissance mapping, detailed mapping, joint measurements and coring roof rock. 1.2 PHASE I RESULTS The results of Phase I consisted of the selection of the following five mines for detailed study: Virginia Pocahontas #3 (Island Creek Coal Company), Bishop (Consolidation Coal Company), Shannon Branch (Allied Chemical Company), Keystone II (Eastern Associated Coal Company) and Macalpine-East Gulf (Westmorelenad Coal Company). In addition, Phase I results, which were based on questionnaire data, indicated that the kind of rock in the roof --gray sandstone, crystallized sandstone, laminated sandstone and shale, grey shale, slickensided shale, and rider seams could be associated with good and bad top areas. Also presence of vertical separations, bolt length, entry and cross-cut width, length and torque on bolts and depth of overburden seemed to be related factors. These data provided a focus for the Phase II measurement program.

Approach Nonmagnetic materials of different densities are rapidly float/sink separated by an augmented lifting force produced In a magnetic fluid (liquid) by the effect of an external magnetic field. The magnetic fluid is a colloidal suspension of magnetite In kerosene, prepared by a low-cost process. How It Works Separation is accomplished in an open trough filled with magnetic fluid. A magnetic field is established in the fluid, by energizing an electromagnet having poles on each side of the trough. Due to the design of the magnet poles and air gaps, the magnetic field is strongest at the bottom, about 10,000 oersteds, and uniformly decreases in strength to about 2,000 oersteds at the top of the fluid. Therefore, the magnetic field gradient increases with depth. The magnetic force attracts the entire separation medium (magnetic fluid) creating a reaction force of equal magnitude and acting in the opposite direction. This reaction created within a magnetic fluid/magnetic field combination is called a magnetic levitation force. It increases with the field strength. In this case because the magnetic field is strongest at the bottom of the trough, the magnetic levitation force will quickly float lighter material while heavier material sinks.

"Reports are sometimes heard of one ill effects of pneumatic tools on the hands of workmen. In consequence of such reports, Dr. Francis M. Barnes, Jr., M..D. of St. Louis, Missouri, was retained by the operators to make an investigation of conditions in the Bedford, Indiana, region, and the result of this investigation was published the Journal of the Missouri State Medical Association, Volume 16, February 1919. A brief review of this report may be of interest to all users of pneumatic tools, or operators of plants where such tools are employed.The investigation was made during December 1917, and involved an examination of general working conditions, and a careful physical examination of stoneworkers who had long used pneumatic tools. As the Bedford district is the most important structural limestone producing center in the country, the results of this investigation may be regarded as fairly conclusive as to the general effect of pneumatic tools on limestone workers."

This interpretation of the laws of El Salvador has been prepared from the best available information in Washington , but is released subject to correction and amplification , if necessary , by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State . Under the terms of the Code of Commerce ( arts . 12ff . ) , foreigners living in El Salvador can engage in business on the same terms as nationals . This involves ( = $434.00 ) - except for those with a working capital , of less than a thousand pesos inscription in the merchants ' register , which can be refused only in case of manifest disability of a permanent nature .

Cost System The cost system reported here is a suite of computer programs which incorporates the logic and information flow structure as outlined in earlier chapters. Specifically, computer programs have been devel¬oped to: 1. compute labor, operating, and capital costs, 2. summarize cost and production data, and 3. compute the minimum acceptable selling price for coal. While the cost system can be executed independently, it is de¬signed primarily for use with the Master Design Simulator and there¬fore must conform to the overall system hardware. The computer model is written in Fortran IV for use with the IBM System 360/370 computers as well as with compatible units such as the Univac 1110 and CDC-6600. For ease in error detection and program modification, the model was constructed with a main routine and eight subroutines. The main routine reads and stores the data necessary for the cost computations and calls the subroutines in logical sequence. The subroutines perform the cost computations and data adjustments for reporting purposes. Each subroutine performs the cost computations for its particular com¬ponent of the cost cycle. The program operations are described in the following narrative outline. Control Subsystem As previously described, the main routine is a passive element, reading and storing input data and directing execution to the active subroutines for cost calculations. Solid and liquid impurities must be removed almost completely from synthesis gas for the production of synthetic liquid fuels because of their effect on the synthesis catalyst and turbocompressors. The maximum permissible concentration of dust has been set at 0.05 grain per 100 cubic feet.5/ This is one part per million by weight, or about the same concentration as in average city air. The cost of synthesis gas is estimated to constitute 60 to 70 percent of the total cost of the synthetic liquid fuel. For this reason this station is developing processes using coal instead of the more valuable coke as raw material, which promises reduction in cost of the synthesis gas. This, however, increases the difficulty of attaining the above dust value. As failure of the dust-removing equipment to produce high-purity gas may ruin valuable equipment within a few minutes, it is imperative that a reliable and continuous method be obtained for determining such extremely low concentrations .of dust in the purified gas. A suitable device must also instantly sound an alarm and, if necessary, automatically actuate the proper valves to prevent damage. The Ess Instrument Co. designed and built an instrument which they believed might fulfill these specifications. It' continually compared, by means of photoelectric cells, the intensity of a light beam passing through the gas and a similar beam passing through clean air. For maximum sensitivity, the photocells were connected back to back, i.e., anode to cathode and cathode to anode. The difference in voltage produced by the two cells was amplified and operated an indicator.

PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. Disconnecting devices shall be locked out and prominently tagged by the persons who perform such work, except that in cases where locking out is not possible, such devices shall be opened and prominently tagged by such persons. Through the development of manufacturing processes whereby ethylene glycol can be made on a large scale; ethylene glycol dinitrate is now being used in high explosives (dynamites and permissible explosives) by some manufacturers as a low-freezing ingredient of the "explosive oil" instead of such compounds as nitropolyglycerin and nitrosubstitution compounds. The amount of ethylene glycol dinitrate being used constitutes 25 to 50 per cent of the oil. The purpose of this report is to give the results of toots, to determine the effect on the safety and physical properties of permissible explosives of subsituating 25 peg cent of ethylene glycol dinitrate for an equal amount of nitroglycerin or a mixture of nitroglycerin and nitropolglycerin.

As part of the first-order assessment of potential manganese nodule processing reject waste materials, the Bureau of Mines estimated the physical and chemical characteristics of reject waste materials that would be generated from each of five potential process flowsheets. These processes were chosen because of their economic and technical feasibility for first-generation nodule processing. A brief description of the five processes is given to show process inputs and outputs, The physical characteristics are predicted based on land-based laterite processing where applicable, and where no land-based analog exists, on the basis of process chemistry. The probable chemical characteristics such as element content and compound form are tabulated for each process for 16 elements: As, Ba, Be, Cd, Go, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn. These elements were chosen based on their presence on the toxic substance list of priority pollutants, EP toxicity criteria, and major and minor elements of economic importance (Co, Fe, Mn, and Mo). Physical and chemical analyses as well as results of the EP toxicity test of one industrially supplied pilot plant reject waste material are presented.

"The microscopic work described below was engaged in primarily into ascertain the approximate proportions in which the copper sulphides existed in the ore examined, and by a comparison of the results obtained from a study of both head are tailing samples to supply data which might be of value in treating the ore by flotation. Incidentally, the physical characteristics and association of the sulphides were noted in order to determine the possible relation or bearing of these features on the present conditions of treatment. Since the copper in the ore occurred as three distinct sulphide minerals - chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite each containing copper in different proportions, there appeared to be little or no possibility of obtaining the desired information by chemical methods of determination.Type of material examinedThe material examined was in the crushed condition and was said to be representative of the flotation feed or heads and the resulting tailing. No hand samples of the ore were examined nor any account taken of the physical condition and association of the minerals in place, because the possible value of the analytical results depended on conditions as they existed in the crushed ore. As the problems under consideration dealt only with the sulphide minerals, especially those of copper, the products from screen sizing were concentrated by hand panning and the gangue discarded. The concentrate obtained consisted almost entirely of the sulphide minerals, since the panning had been very carefully done. The object of this procedure was to obtain a sufficient quantity of high-grade sulphide material, from the sample of each screen size selected for examination, to permit its being so prepared for examination as to be representative of the physical characteristics exhibited by a large number of sulphide grains from each respective size, In the tests and investigations carried on by the company' treating the ore the following sizes had been used in tabulating data and basing conclusions:+48, +65, +100, +150, +200, and -200. These same sizes were used in the microscopic investigation, since the results obtained thereby could be most readily utilized for comparison with the results obtained in previous experimental work, together with deductions based on actual concentration of the ore on a commercial scale."

This paper describing the mining methods employed by the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., operating the Morning mine at Mullan, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The daily tonnage produced at the Morning mine, including that mined by leasers, is 1,100 tons. Mine run of ore will average 9.1 per cent lead, 5.8 per cent zinc, and 4.4 ounces silver per ton. A stull set and fill method of mining is employed.

In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.
