The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary beneficiation studies of a gold-bearing graphitic schist from Blue Hill, Tallapoosa County, Ala. The average analysis of the material was 0.08 oz/ton gold. Tabling of minus 35-mesh material recovered 83 to 94 percent of the gold at grades of 6.925 to 2.165 oz/ton, respectively. A combination of jigging and tabling resulted in a concentrate assaying 24.3 oz/ton gold and contained 87 percent of the total gold. Treatment of the material by jigging, tabling, and amalgamation recovered 86.5 percent of the gold.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fractured-induced, siliconbased radicals (Si· and SiO·), and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO· radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO4, Ha2seO3, ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotozicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). Prom the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little· or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of Quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi, et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell-membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made towards the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanism underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."

The mine ventilation system consists of the fan, the roadways, and the regulatory devices. Sufficient fresh air must reach each working face in the mines to render harmless noxious, toxic, and respirable pollutants and to provide for the breathing of men. This is achieved by the proper selection of fan and regulatory devices. Because a mining system is dynamic, the mine ventilation system must also be dynamic. In short, mine ventilation engineers are frequently called upon to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Given a mine or the projected plan of a mine, what fan must be selected for the quantities specified in the section? At what point in its characteristic must it be operated? Are any speed changes or changes in blade settings warranted? 2. What should be the regulation in a section to insure cer¬tain desired quantity in that section? How does it affect the overall ventilation system? 3. What are the effects of driving a new shaft? Where should it be located? What size fan should be installed in the shaft? How does this affect the overall ventilation sys¬tem? 4. How much quantity increases can be obtained by cleaning up falls and streamlining roadways and by driving addi¬tional parallel airways? These questions are in no way exhaustive, nor are answers easy. Most of the operational and planning problems discussed above are to a cer¬tain extent solved by ventilation engineers using rules of thumb from experience. Both natural conditions and regulatory requirements have changed so drastically recently that use of scientific methods in ventilation planning and of faster methods in evaluating the plans is a must. The Bureau of Mines customarily publishes lists of equipment meeting its safety standards to keep the mining industry informed as to the development and availability of mining equipment that can be used safely. The present list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, as well as Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54. Because standards have been revised and new ones added by the Bureau, this list contains classes of equipment not previously covered.

In connection with its investigations of strategic minerals in the United States, the Bureau of Mines ran magnetic surveys totaling more than 533,000 linear feet at 30 deposits of magnetite in northern New Jersey. These deposits occur in a belt of granitic gneiss and in limited areas of limestone. The ore consists of magnetite accompanied by score of the following minerals: Hornblende, augite, apatite, feldspar, biotite, calcite, garnet and pyrolusite. Results of these investigations are being presented in two reports of which this is the second. The first paper, Certain. Magnetite Deposits in New Jersey, by A. L. Neumann and McHenry Mosier, was issued in April 1948 as Report of Investigations 4225.

Simple treatment methods, employing the least possible equipment, can sometimes be established for marginal ores and economical results achieved. In continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno Station of the Bureau of Mines, typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been investigated. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores, as well as the conservation and recovery of values in products from former operations that were discarded because of past inability to treat them economically. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas some involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test, work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials; and because, inasmuch as the samples were representative of the districts from which they were obtained, this in-formation should be helpful in the future development of these districts. The present report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on oxide ores only, which contained gold and silver and in some cases base metals. The methods of treatment used include gravity concentration, amalgamation, flotation, and cyanidation. For the most part, only standard laboratory procedures were employed. No attempts were made to develop new methods for the low-grade refractory ores in this group of samples if simple treatment was not successful, as the stage of development of the properties did not warrant extensive experimentation on the samples submitted.

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and the standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Bureau of Mines for aluminum sulfide, A12S3. The standard entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 27.93±0.05 call deg-mole, -155.6±0.9 kcal/mole, and -153.0±1.0 kcal/mole, respectively.

"The thirteenth annual accident-prevention competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1937 was completed with 318 mines and quarries participating. This contest, known as the National Safety Competition, is open to all minas and, quarries employing 25 or more men underground or in the quarry or open pit. The entries are divided into five groups to obtain as nearly as possible uniformity of operating conditions and hazards. The five divisions are: (1) Underground anthracite mines, (2) underground bituminous-coal mines, (3) underground metal mines, (4) underground nonmetal mines, (5) quarries and open-pit mines. A bronze trophy, known as Sentinels of Safety, provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine, is awarded to the winner of each group. The trophy is kept by the winning company 1 year and then transferred to the winner of the succeeding year's contest. Certificates of Honorable Mention are given to plants ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth in each group and to all plants operating without a lost-time accident provided the period of exposure to hazard was not less than 30,000 man-hours. Relative standing in the contest is determined by the contestant's accident-severity rate, which represents the total number of days of employee disability from accidents per thousand man-hours worked by all employees.The 1937 contest was outstanding in that the accident-frequency rate for the contest group as a, whole was the lowest on record. Moreover, with one exception 1934, the accident-severity rate was the lowest ever attained: For frequency, 3S.0 accidents per million man-hours worked; and for severity, 8.2 days lost from accidents per thousand man-hours worked. The rates represent a decline of 62 percent in accident frequency since 1925, the first year of the contest, a remarkable accomplishment both for the contest group and for the purpose of the contest because a majority of the contestants have not only participated during the past year but have been enrolled several years, some enrollments even dating back to 1925."

Rapidly identify unstable mine waste embankments and similar dam structures. Approach Aerial photography, geotechnical instrumentation, and telephone or satellite data transmission are used to supplement walk-around inspect ions. How It Works Embankment stability and other indicators of structural integrity are evaluated using aerial photography, and on-site unattended instruments and data transmitting systems. Evidence of external movement and water seepage is obtained from aerial photography and photogrammetric evaluation techniques. Surface points marked by stake- mounted targets are monitored photographically at time intervals of several weeks or months. Photographic measurements of x, y, and z coordinates of these points are obtained from flying a series of photo-runs over the dam.

"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Work on the deposit started May 24, 1944, and was suspended on July 31, 1944, but was resumed on December 4, 1944 and continued until completion on March 27, 1945.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as it, primary objective the more effective resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploration work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the high-temperature properties of 90- and 98-pct-MgO brick. Brick samples were soaked in solutions containing Al, Ca, Cr, Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, Sn, Ti, or Zr ions. Additions to 98-pct-MgO brick did not generally result in statistically significant property improvements. Statistically significant improvements were noted in hot modulus of rupture (MOR), slag resistance, and spalling resistance of the 90-pct-MgO brick for additions of Al, Mg, or Sn. High-temperature performance of treated 90-pct-MgO refractories was equal to or approached that of 98-pct-MgO brick. The marked improvements due to tin were obtained with additions of only 1.14 wt pct Sn02.

Laboratory measurements by the Bureau of Mines indicate that failure in dry rock specimens measuring approximately 13 cm in length is preceded by tilt anomalies lasting a few milliseconds. The tilt behavior is qualitatively similar to that reported to precede earthquakes. Test results suggest that the time duration of this tilt anomaly for laboratory specimens of this length is independent of rock type, in agreement with theoretical predictions and other experimental data on rock failures including earthquakes.

The basic mining law of Cuba is contained in the basic Spanish mining decree having the effect of law December 29 , 1868. This legislation has remained substantially unchanged , with the exception of a few minor administrative changes made by the present Government . These changes provide for the register of mines , oil wells , and operations of such nature , and also provide for the keeping of records showing the value of minerals taken out . By Royal decree of April 17 , 1883 , the law of mines enacted for the Peninsula ( Spain ) on July 6 , 1859 , and the General Bases of December 29 , 1868 , were declared in force in Cuba . In order to encourage the mining of iron org , in 1883 the Crow of Spain issued a royal decree to the following effect.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

THIS CHAPTER reports employment data and injury experience in the metal, nonmetal, quarrying, sand and gravel, and slag (iron blast furnace) industries of the United States in 1959. Each industry is treated separately, and no attempt has been made to combine data to show an overall total for this group of mineral industries. The slag canvass is included for the first time (data on employment and injuries were not collected before 1958), and, like other canvasses included in this chapter, data are voluntary. Employment and injury experience for all mineral industries can be found in volume III. The employment and injury information in this chapter came from reports submitted to the Bureau of Mines before May 31, 1960; therefore, figures are preliminary and subject to revision. Voluntary reports submitted by operators have contributed substantially to safety promotion since 1911, when the Federal Bureau of Mines started collecting employment and injury facts.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver, as well as of the manganese, contained in some domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method consists of an initial leach of manganese with aqueous sulfur dioxide (S02) followed first by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach with cyanide solution for the extraction of silver. Refractory silver in these ores was either (1) intimately associated with the manganese, (2) chemically resistant to cyanide leaching, or (3) rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when minus 2.5-plus 1.3-cm ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct of the silver and 65 to 96 pet of the manganese were attained in laboratory column-leach tests using the dual leaching method on equivalent-sized ore pieces from seven domestic deposits.

As part of the work done at the Washington coal mines during the year 1929 , a study was made of the safety practices in and about the mines . Inasmuch as electrical blasting has made considerable headway it is interesting to note the manner in which it is done and the reasons why it was discarded at some of the mines . Blasting is done at the mines in the State by means of capped fuse , electric blasting " caps , " and in some instances by electric delay detonators . Black blasting powder with fuse is used at most of the open- light mines . The use of squibs was discontinued several years ago because the coal operators , without exception , recognized the dangers incidental to their use . Permissible explosive and dynamite are also used at some of the open- light mines . With the exception of some rock work and the driving of level work in gangways and air courses the explosive is detonated by means of capped fuse .

A new method has been developed for handling supplies in underground bituminous coal mines. A survey indicates industry wide implementation potential for the proposed method. Reduction of supply handling accidents' by as much as 73% and improvements in the productivity of face operations by at least 3% are anticipated benefits. The new method is based on the palletization of daily supplies and the use of a forklift for carrying out the handling tasks at the underground section. A prototype of the forklift has been delivered to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The forklift has demonstrated several important features necessary for underground supply handling such as compactness, maneuverability, visibility, ease of control and auxiliary attachments for hoisting, carrying timber and pulling. Design improvements are recommended for future generation underground forklifts. These relate to higher speed, increased battery duty cycle, higher payload and modified traction/steering to eliminate plowing of soft mine floors.
