"Information gathered during recent months by field men of the U. S. Bureau of Mines shows that in one State alone there have been 71 fatalities from electrical causes during the last 51/2 years, of which 55 were from contact with mine trolley wires operated at 250 volts or less, direct current. The 1928 law relating to the guarding of trolley wires in the-mines of this particular State reads: ""All trolley wires carrying a voltage of class 2 must be properly shielded except where the same are at least 61/2 feet above top of rail."" Class 2 voltage is defined as being ""between 300 volts and 600 volts direct current, or 240 volts and 480 volts alternating current."" From this it may be inferred that no guards are required, for 250-volt trolley wires, and the natural conclusion to be drawn is that the lack of guards or shields must be held responsible for these fatalities. To prevent fatalities from this source, it has been advocated that every foot of trolley wire in mines should be guarded. While some such drastic step may appear to be amply justified, a closer examination of the records shows that lack of guards is not entirely responsible but rather that carelessness and neglect in the observance of certain well-established simple rules concerning installation and location of trolley wires must also bear a share in the responsibility. In -other words, if trolley wire is installed carelessly and its maintenance neglected, failure may be expected of any guards that have been put up.There are a-number of factors affecting safety as related to trolley wires in mines, among which the following may be enumerated.1. Installation relative to track and passageways.2. Guarding.3. Maintenance.4. Discipline.Acknowledgment is made to D. Harrington and K. L. Marshall of the safety division of the bureau for assistance given in securing data on cost of installing guards for trolley wires.The statement that fatalities should not be charged in every case to lack of guards is supported by the following example: A man operating a locomotive was electrocuted when the trolley wheel jumped the 250-volt trolley wire and allowed it to sag against his shoulder. He was sitting in the regular place provided in the locomotive, but the wire was 11 inches inside of the rail and only 39 inches above it where the wire touched him, or 11 inches from the roof at a distance of 12 feet from the nearest hanger. The accident occurred between two hangers 44 feet apart, and the trolley wire was inside the rail over the entire distance, being 2 inches inside at one hanger and 10 inches inside at the other hanger. A bolt in the roof indicated that there had been a hanger at one time between the two on the 44-foot span.This example is a violation of good practice in the installation and maintenance of trolley wire. In the first place the wire should have been outside instead of inside the rail. In the second place there should have been at least one intermediate hanger so that the span would not be so great and the sag would be reduced. Furthermore, it is possible that the wire was not taut enough even when the intermediate hanger was in place.To provide a degree of safety for men in the mines certain coal-mining States, recognizing the need, have enacted laws to regulate the installation of trolley wires. These limit the distance that the wire must be kept outside and above the rail. Thus, the 1927 mining laws of Ohio specify that:"

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of barite (BaSO4) from 35 U.S. and 41 non-U.S. mines and deposits in 17 market economy countries (MEC's). This evaluation assesses the availability of mud-grade barite, and concentrates consumed by the chemicals and fillers industries. The demonstrated resources defined in this analysis totaled 130 million metric tons (Mmt) of barite (contained BaSO4), yielding a potential 115 Mmt of recoverable barite concentrates. At the 1984 MEC production rate, the evaluated resources would last about 30 yr; however, this would include production costs of up to $100/mt concentrate. An average price needed to cover all costs of production over the life of each operation was determined for both mud-grade and chemical- and filler-grade barite products. Including a 0-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), regional weighted- average total production cost ranged from $38/mt for barite concentrates in Asia to $71/mt for U.S. operations. Transportation costs have the greatest impact, contributing up to 60 pct of the total cost of production. Rail transportation costs from the mines to U.S. markets are generally significantly higher than ocean shipping rates on imports.

As with many new technologies, the rapid growth in solution mining for uranium has created uncertainties regarding the environmental impact of mining operations. In solution mining, the largest area of concern is the impact of the process on the quality of ground water supplies. As a result, a rapid and reliable technique of detecting lixiviant excursions is desirable. Such a method would replace the periodic sampling technique and should provide a more or less continuous monitoring method. To this end, resistivity techniques were evaluated as an alternate means of tracking lixiviant movement. A program was devised which had five specific tasks. These were: (1) evaluation of the techniques, (2) development of the most promising technique or techniques, (3) field testing of the techniques, (4) testing of the BuMines probe, and (5) reporting. The result of the analytical and field work is that various resistivity/ resistance techniques do provide a means of detecting lixiviant movement in Northern Wyoming. Surface and downhole galvanic surveys and controlled source audio magnetotellurics (AMT) were evaluated. All three techniques showed some degree of success.

"The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

During the 7-1/2 years (January 1945-June 1952), immediately preceding enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, 26 major disasters3/ in the coal mines of the United States caused the deaths of 491 persons. In the next 7-1/2 years under the act (July 1952-December 1959), only 12 major disasters occurred. The total killed was 148. This improvement is commendable. However, the continuing frequency of minor fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in the Nation's coal mines, many of which could have been of major consequence, are cause for serious concern to the coal-mining industry and those affiliated agencies engaged in promoting safety in the industry. The data presented in this report have been prepared to make available to the coal-mining industry and related groups an overall perspective of the disaster potential from mine fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in coal mines after 7-1/2 years under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. This act, effective July 16, 1952, which amended the original Federal coal-mine investigative act of May 1941, provides under Title II certain enforcible mine-safety provisions designed to prevent major disasters caused by explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip and man-hoist accidents in coal mines that employ 15 or more individuals underground.

Uranium metal of improved purity was prepared by electrorefining commercial magnesium-reduced uranium in a molten sodium chloride-uranium trichloride electrolyte. The best operating conditions for the preparation of refined metal were established as follows: an electrolyte containing 8.7 to 13.3 weight-percent uranium; initial cathode current densities from 300 to 1,500 amp/sq ft; and a molten salt temperature of 860° C. Ingots produced from electrorefined uranium crystals prepared with these operating conditions were substantially free of metallic impurities. The only impurities in the refined and consolidated metal were present in low or undetectable amounts.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated a light-scattering technique for discriminating between spherical and nonspherical particles. This evaluation was a three-step procedure. The first step required collecting light-scattering data for a variety of particles. This was accomplished with a particle analyzer called the DAWN-A. The DAWN-A measured the scattered light intensities of individual particles at a forward scattering angle of 40°. These DAWN-A measurements of individual particles are called scattering signatures by the Bureau researchers. The second step in this evaluation was to calculate a sphericity index number using the scattering signatures produced by the DAWN-A. The sphericity index number can range from 0 to 1. A calculated sphericity index of 1 would show that based on the intensity of scattered light, the particle was a perfect sphere. The third and final step of this evaluation was the comparison of the calculated sphericity indices of the various particles. Comparing these indices made it possible to discriminate between the nearly spherical waterdrops and the nonspherical coal and rock dust particles.

A prototype mucking machine designed to operate in narrow-vein stopes was developed by Foster-Miller, Inc., Waltham, MA, under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The machine, called a compact loader-trammer, or minimucker, was designed to replace slusher muckers in narrow-vein underground mines. The minimucker is a six-wheel-drive, skid-steered, load-haul-dump (LHD) machine that loads muck at the front with a novel slide-bucket system and ejects it out the rear so that the machine does not have to be turned around. To correct deficiencies of the tether-remote-control system, a computer-based, radio-remote-control system was retrofitted to the minimucker. Initial tests indicated a need to assist the operator in guiding the machine in narrow stopes. An automatic guidance system that used ultrasonic ranging sensors and a wall-following algorithm was installed. Additional tests in a simulated test stope showed that these changes improved the operation of the minimucker. The design and functions of the minimucker and its computer-based, remote-control system are reviewed, and an ultrasonic-sensor-based guidance system is described.

The chemical properties of the unsaturated members of the aliphatic series of hydrocarbons are such as to render them " made to order" starting points or basic . materials for the synthesis of hundreds of important organic chemicals . The tremendous quantities of these unsaturated compounds that are being produced daily in the various coal carbonization and oil refining processes , and which at present have little value other than that of fuel , render a survey of the identity and ex- tent of occurrence of these compounds important from the viewpoint of economic utilization and resource conservation The increased need of liquid fuel and the relatively early exhaustion of petroleum resources will eventually require every utilization of liquid fuel products obtainable directly or indirectly from coal . Accordingly , the Bureau of Mines took advantage of an opportunity for examining the gaseous unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the gas obtained when a mixture of water- Collection of the material gas tar and coal is distilled in a gas-making retort . for examination was made possible through the courtesy of the Trent Process Corporation , Washington , D.C. , which was at that time carrying on at the Georgetown Gas Works , distillation of " amal gams " prepared from various coals and oils by the Trent process for cleaning coals . Kanawha gas coal ( 70%) and water gas tar ( 30 % ) from the Washington Gas Light plant were used in the " amal gam" being distilled at that time . The results obtained in this examination are presented here .

2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation. During early development of the blast furnace, Connellsville coke made entirely from Pittsburgh-bed coal proved to be an excellent fuel. The need for blending coking coals arose as the industry grew and it became necessary to carbonize coals having voking properties inferior to those of Pittsburgh coal Most coals carbonized today in continental Europe and this country are blonded: This practise has improved the quality of coke and permitted the utilization of coals that would yield inferior coke, if carbonized sepa- rately, The depletion of the world's better coking coals, which has been noted by leading coal technologists,2/4/wes accelerated during the recent war and. It is important, therefore, that reserves be evaluated and conserved. In the principal, steel-producing sections of this country, Pocahontas coals have been blended so extensively that the terms "low-volatile coking coal": and. "Pocahontas" have become virtually synonymous. Other low-volatile coals. have been used to manufacture metallurgical coke and will be used more extensively as, the supply of the better known and more accessible Pocahontas coals decreases. Recognizing the need for augmenting the supply of high-rank coking coals, the Bureau of Mines has included both low- and medium-volatile coals in its Survey of the Carbonizing Properties of American Coals, which was started with the cooperation of the American Gas Association in 1929. Twenty coals, 12 of low-volatile and 8 of medium-volatile rank, have been blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh-bed coal, and five standard low- volatile coals have been blended with various high-volatile coals. Umber and sienna, like ocher, are naturally occurring mineral pig- ments composed largely of clay permeated with hydrated iron (ferric oxide), but they differ from ocher in that they also contain hydrated manganese oxide. The presence of manganese accounts for their browner color. In addition to silica and alumina (clay) and the coloring oxides of iron and manganese, these pigments often contain lime, barium, and other metallic salts as impurities. Sienna most nearly approaches ocher in chemical composition, and the chief distinction is its physical character. It grades into ocher with de- creasing iron content and into umber with increasing manganese content. Sienna is translucent rather than opaque and is more of a stain than a pigment; as the iron oxide content is rather high (often 60 to 80 per cent), the color is strong and rich and varies from pure brown to reddish brown. This pigment raw sienna, terra di Siena, and Italian earth. is known under several names: Burnt sienna is a pigment of an orange-brown tint made by cautionsly calcining raw sienna. It is divided into two grades; American, and Italian burnt sienna. American burnt sienna is a reddish-brown pigment containing from 25 to 60 per cent iron oxide (Fe2O3). One grade, found in Pennsylvania, analyses as high as 80 per cent and is mown as double strength sienna. Italian burnt sienna is a pigment generally containing more iron than the American product, averaging 60 to 75 per cent iron oxide.3 American pig- ments of the same iron content differ materially in shade, having a Havana- brown color, whereas the Italian is more of a maroon. Italian siennas when tinted with 20 per cent of white, show a bluish tint, whereas American siennas yield a brownish or yellowish hue. Raw umber, also known as Turkey umber, Levant umber, and terra ombra, is a greenish to yellowish brown siliceous and ferruginous earth, containing a considerable proportion of one or other of the higher oxides of manganese, Mng04 and MnO2." It is similar in many respects to raw sienna except that it is much coarser and contains more manganese oxide. All umbers contain over 5 per cent of manganese dioxide. Like sienna, umber is a permanent pigment, not being injured by light or by impure atmospheres. Burnt umber (velvet brown, chestnut brown, etc.), results from the calcination of raw umber. The color is much richer and warmer than that of the raw umber. The colors are equally permanent and can be used in conjunc- tion with all other durable pigments.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

This paper is one of a series on milling methods being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. Atlanta is in Elmore County, Idaho, about 80 miles from the railroad at Mountain Home, Idaho. The concentrator is at an elevation of, 6,000 feet and located in a timbered, well-watered region of relatively heavy snowfall. The snow, however, does not seriously affect local operations. The track road to Mountain Home, which passes over a mountain range, is closed each winter from about November 1 to June 15. During this period concentrates are stored and bullion is shipped by airplane. Power is generated by a Diesel engine and by an auxiliary hydroelectric plant. Gold is the principal metal produced; the or also contains an able quantity of silver.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

Yield stress and plastic viscosity values, determined from shear rate-shear stress relationships, were found to be a linear function of coal concentration for coal-water slurries containing 40, 45, 50, and 55 weight-percent of powdered coal. In the laminar region, the flow is described by an equation derived from the fact that the square root of the shear stress varied linearily with the square root of the shear rate. In the turbulent region, the friction factor was found to be inversely proportional to the velocity to the 0.12 power.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYComplaints have been made regarding dust respirators that may be used in coal-mining operations. Some of these complaints may be due to improper use of the respirator, inadequate knowledge of its purpose and mode of functioning, poor choice, poor fitting, or inadequate maintenance. It is hoped that this circular will answer these complaints by discussing the various factors relating to the proper use of dust respirators in general and in coal mines in particular.It is pointed out that dust respirators are not to be used as a substitute for dust-control measures. The construction, functioning, choice, fitting, and maintenance of dust respirators are discussed.FIELD OF USEThe function of the dust respirator is to prevent the wearer from inhaling harmful quantities of dust by removing dust from the air he inhales.A dust respirator is not to be used as a permanent substitute for dust-control measures. It is to be used as a temporary substitute until dust-control measures can be instituted or as a protective means where dust-control measures are impracticable, as in applying rock dust in bituminous-coal mines.The following sections of the ""Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines in the United States"" 2/ emphasize the fact that every effort should be made to keep the amount of dust in the air of the working places as small as possible:"

It is of interest to know how to obtain as high an absorption efficiency as possible from a CO2-absorption canister used in closed-circuit breathing apparatus. In this study the Bureau of Mines found that varying the bed depth and the cross-sectional area of a canister changes its absorption characteristics. In tests using four ,1 rectangular, variable-depth canisters with different cross-sectional areas, the Bureau found that, given a constant weight of the chemical absorbent, LiOH, and a constant COa input, the canisters with a greater cross-sectional area reached C02 levels of 0.5 volume-percent in the effluent gas sooner than did the canisters with a greater bed depth. However, resistance to flow through the canister increases with bed depth, and a trade-off is inevitable. It was anticipated that the efficiency of a canister would increase with increasing intergranular air space approaching the tidal volume of the breathing waveform and then level off at some point under 100 percent. This postulation was partially substantiated. Cylindrical and radial canisters were also tested and compared. It appears that shape is not as important a factor in absorption efficiency as bed depth, since neither canister differed significantly from the rectangular canisters with regard to absorption efficiency values.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.
