Total yield and backscattered electron coefficients were measured in this Bureau of Mines study in an microanalyzer as a function of atomic number and of primary crier: ;y in the 15- to 35-kilovolt range. The electron coefficients were obtained indirectly from measurements of the specimen electron current and the primary beam current collected in a Faraday cage and were measured with a precision better than 0.5 percent. Secondary electron emission was suppressed with opposing potential applied to a screen grid surrounding the specimen. The values of the backscattered electron coefficients agreed with published values within 5 percent.

Coal has been transported by belt conveyors in mines for many years; however, only since the beginning of the general mechanization period have complete transportation system of this type been employed. Aside from my complete belt-conveyor transportation systems, belt conveyors are frequently used in conjunction with other transportation. Many early installations, for the most part, were made without standards as a guide. As a result, some States have outlined certain requirements based more or less on experience following mine fires. Correlation of these regulations should result in more uniformity in connection with standardization of regulations. The National Electrical manufacturers Association has published standards for mining-belt-conveyor installations2/ that should be helpful to the coal-mining industry generally. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2F3/ requires certain controls for permissible-belt- conveyor drives, and similar requirements are listed in Bureau of Mines bulletin 514.4/ Committees of the American Mining Congress have prepared much valuable information concerning operation of belt conveyors, and a subcommittee on fire-resistant belting has been active. 5/

A reduction roasting/magnetic separation/flotation process for beneficiating oxidized taconite from the western Mesabi iron range in Minnesota was evaluated in a Bureau of Mines research program to insure an adequate supply of raw materials for future ironmaking and steelmaking needs. The research was performed on a sample containing 35.4 pct iron and representing a deposit of approximately 2 billion tons of raw materials. An average of 1,419 lb of oxidized taconite and 37 lb of lignite reluctant per hour were fed to a 35 -foot rotary kiln in which the iron oxides were converted to artificial magnetite. The kiln was heated with pulverized lignite and natural gas. Most of the dust collected from the kiln exhaust gas was pelletized and recycled to the kiln. Magnetic separation and cationic flotation of the roasted material in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant produced a concentrate analyzing 67.9 pct iron and 4.9 pct silica and containing 69.2 pct of the iron in the kiln feed.

This report covers a phase of an extraction project carried out as part of a research program on rare-earth technology. The current project--the production of pure cerium compounds--is an intermediate step between ore processing and metal reduction. In this connection, a study on a separatory-funne1 scale was made on nonreducing extractants for recovering cerium (IV) from tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and of methods for recovering the cerium nitrate from the strip solution. Dilute sulfuric acid was found to be 100 percent effective in stripping cerium (IV). Several precipitants were effective in recovering the cerium from the strip solution, and ethanol was especially promising. A scaled-up investigation was made into the use of spray-tower type equipment to perform the function of extracting, washing, and stripping. This equipment, referred to as the pressure-bubbler, utilized the system developed on the separatory-funnel scale. Feed solutions were prepared from a bastnasite concentrate by two techniques. Of these, the sulfated bastnasite solution was most successful, resulting in 86-percent recovery of the cerium at 99.7+-percent purity.

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

The Lincoln Terminal System (LTS) is a stand-alone computerized training device that presents high quality visual displays, and audio messages to a student. A keyboard is provided for student input. A variety of student-machine interactive programs arc provided. These programs allow the author/instructor to evaluate numerical entries and responses to simple and compound multiple-choice questions (where a compound choice is defined to be more than one choice, ordered or unordered from one or more list(s) of choices. Descriptions of LTS applications, lesson development procedures, hardware provided and support facilities required are given. A contract history summary, and a bibliography of reports published under three successive BoM contracts supporting LTS development, is provided.

The Antimony RARE II area is underlain principally by Mesozoic igneous rocks associated with the Sierra Nevada batholith. The San Andreas fault zone is near the southern boundary. Metallic mineral deposits are associated with the fault zone. These deposits were formed from magmatic solutions, and tend to be along shears and fractures within the country rock. Marble and dolomitic marble deposits occur in Paleozoic roof pendants or inclusions in the Mesozoic intrusive rocks in the area (Troxel and Morton, 1962, p. 52).

Tables 1 to 18: Contain current data on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, major and detailed classification of injuries, and distribution of injuries by part of body and days of disability. (B) Selected injury data: 1. Tables 19 to 45: Contain current data on various selected factors of operating and physical conditions that have contributed to the occurrence of injuries at bituminous-coal mines and at Pennsylvania anthracite mines. These factors include extent of hand and machine loading, size of mine by employment and production groups, thickness of bed or vein, duration and number of work shifts, rating of mine as gassy, or nongassy, types of cap lamps, ventilation, explosives, and combinations of factors that influence mine safety. (C) Injury experience by States: 1. Tables 46 to 52: Contain current data on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, major classification of injuries, injury records of all coal-producing States, and the relative standing by States according to injury-frequency rates. This was a study to identify and evaluate known technologies employing electromagnetic resonance phenomena in solid minerals for their identification and assaying, particularly assay logging of exploratory boreholes. A comprehensive literature search and study revealed some little known NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques developed by Professor G. J. Béné's group at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. These are suitable for use in weak, inhomogeneous magnetic fields. Laboratory NMR tests of numerous U.S. ore minerals showed good identifying signals from phosphates, fluorspar, bauxite, oil shale, and spodumene (lithium) ores, but not from the copper, lead, antimony or manganese ores tested. Use of EPR "signatures" for such ores is suggested. A conceptual design for an NMR assay logging system is proposed.

This study was planned to present salient facts of the California and Nevada sulfur industries and to indicate existing opportunities for increased economic utilization of California and Nevada sulfur resources. Numerous publications on sulfur have been issued by the Federal Bureau of Mines, including Information Circular 6329, Sulfur, by Robert H. Ridgway (1930); annual Minerals Yearbook chapters on Sulfur and Pyrites, by various authors; and a chapter on Sulfur by G. W. Josephson in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 556, Mineral Pacts and Problems (1956). This literature, however, deals primarily with the national and international sulfur situation and does not attempt to analyze the possibilities for increased economic development of sulfur resources by individual States. The present study attempts to analyze these possibilities in California and Nevada and to (1) evaluate factors that have influenced production and consumption in California and Nevada and (2) indicate apparent trends in production, consumption, and prices in these States.

"Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, various mines in the Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point mining districts were examined by C. R. Wilfley, W. R. Hamilton, .and N. E. Wvvlwy, Jr., Bureau Of 'Mines engineers, in July and August 1943, July 1944, and September 1945. In a subsequent report a proposal was made to evaluate this isolated area 'of some 15 square miles located in Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colo.Reconnaissance work in the area was begun in June 1946. Mapping and sampling were begun in July and was completed in Pougkeepsie Gulch and extended westward to include the Hendrick Gulch area of the east side of Ironton Park. Project work was recessed for the winter on October 15, 1946 after approximately 6 square miles of the Poughkeepsie Gulch,district been mapped and 801 samples had been taken.In this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production lead, zinc; and silver is given.The individual mines and prospects in, the area are described in detail.A list of patented claims and ownerships is given in appendix I, and analyses of samples are tabulated in appendix II.The San Juan preliminary project was directed by Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Mining Division and was supervised by William M. Traver, Jr., supervising engineer, Colorado Field. Office.Chemical analyses were made by the Salt Lake City laboratory under the direction of H.E. Peterson, chemist, and S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Metallurgical Division.Harold A. The objective of this program was to select approximately 100 acoustic materials for flammability evaluation. Noise control programs have been initiated on several types of mining equipment and vehicles which can be used in underground coal mines. Often, the materials which are used in these noise reduction programs have not been tested for flammability properties according to the same reference standard. During this program a variety of materials were selected for measurement according to ASTM E-162 procedures. A radiant heat energy source was used to measure flammability properties of 15.2 x 45.7 cm. samples. In the absorptive materials category, 45 percent of the materials tested had a flame spread index of less than 25. For barrier, damping, and isolation materials the corresponding values were 40, 43, and 9 percent.

The mining law now in force in Finland is the Imperial Russian Ukase of 1883, promulgated November 12, 1883, by Czar Alexander III, with the sanc- tion and permission of the Finnish Estates. This law repealed prior legisla- tion, as follows: Crdinance of liay 25, 1857, concerning the appropriation of ores and minerals; as wall as the right to remove and utilize them; proclama- tion of January 20, 1868, amending, the ordinance of May 25, 1857; proclama- tion of October 3, 1621, concerning the appropriation of precious metals; and the proclamation of October 30, 1878, concerning prospecting for gold, etc., in Finnish Lapland. A proposal for a new mining lar is still being considered by the Finnish Diet. This new law, if and when promulgated, will differ only slightly from the law of 1683 but will be drafted in more modern language."

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36 3/. The second resort gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936 4/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-37 5/.This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others."

The magnitude and rate of advance of an inmine coal squeeze was deter-mined by measuring roof-to-floor convergence on a regular basis. A dial-gage tube extensometer was used to collect data. Using these measurements) Bureau of Mines employees drew contour maps and graphs to show the direction and rate of squeezing. Information on the rate of squeeze advance was used to determine whether steps should be taken to prevent roof and/or floor movement from closing an entire section of the mine and if alteration of mining plans was necessary to prevent further squeeze development. Data analysis revealed that the squeeze was decelerating; thus there was no need to strengthen support in the areas of the mine that were studied. Mining plans were altered, however, as a result of the findings of this investigation.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines efforts in the research and development of a new and innovative mine lighting system which is based on fiber optics technology. The new lighting concept offers significant advantages over conventional systems in the areas of both safety and long- term maintenance costs. An overview of Bureau research into the problems and limitations of present-day mine lighting systems is also presented.

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.
