The results of a four-year research effort aimed at developing a practical and effective electronic system for monitoring safety conditions throughout a coal mine by displaying, at a central location, remotely measured parameters are described. This document presents the general philosophy of an experimental system in an operating coal mine. The conclusions drawn from this experience are presented and a typical design for a large coal mine is described.

In a previous report results were given and a method outlined whereby from a knowledge of the composition of the natural gas and of the inflammability limits of the individual constituents composing the natural gas, the limits of inflammability of natural gas and air mixtures could be closely calculated. This method is based on the application of Le Chatelier's law as modified by Coward, Carpenter and Payman, to apply to a mixture of any number of combustible gases. This law must not be used indiscriminately, because many exceptions have been found. For example, when ethylene, acetylene, hydrogen sulphide, or chlorinated hydrocarbons are present the law may not hold. For a discussion of the rally exceptions which have been found, reference should be made to a report by Coward and Jones. Before this method can be used the inflammable limits of the individual constituents must be known. Also, the composition of the complex combustible mixture, and representative mixtures besides, must be tested both experimentally and by calculation to prove whether Le Chatelier's law may be applied.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., has developed a new methane analyzer system for underground applications. Methane enters coal mine ventilation air from the breakup of coal at the active face, from the collapse of roof rock during retreat mining, and from the ribs abutting virgin coal. Each source contributes varying amounts to the total emission, depending upon rate of mining, type of mining, and the character of the coalbed and adjacent strata. The evaluation of individual parameters of methane emission requires the continuous monitoring of individual mine sections over a long period of time. The methane analyzer system was developed to meet this need. The system has been installed and operated in an active mine in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The system and details of its installation and calibration are described. Data are presented to substantiate its reliability.

"INTRODUCTION An important phase of the accident-preventing program of the Bureau Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases, vapors, and liquids encountered in mining and allied industries and the development of methods of eliminating or mitigating them.Recently, isobutane has become a commercially important raw material in the production of aviation gasoline by the alkylation process. 4/ in which isoparaffins are combined with olefins to give higher molecular weight compounds of branched-chain structure.Because of the anticipated commercial importance of isobutane in industry, it has been deemed necessary to study and determine its general explosion haz¬ards. This report gives its limits of inflammability, minimum ignition temper¬atures, and the amounts of nitrogen and carbon dioxide required to render isobutane-air mixtures noninflammable."

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was published in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

[IN COMPILING the table of analyses of this bulletin every available source of information was studied. These sources, as listed at the end of the table, were many and varied, and it believed that the tabulation gives the best general information obtainable. However, its known accuracy and completeness of coverage necessarily fall far short of published data on coals of the United States. A table of world production of coal and lignite, as and published by the Bureau of Mine, of world resources of coals, brown coal, and lignite, as published in the Yearbook of the World Power Conference, 1948, are included for convenience of the reader. The six continental maps at the end of the bulletin show the general location of the principal coal fields.]

To have the capability to predict the development of localized spontaneous heating within a porous coalbed that is subjected to forced air ventilation or in an otherwise quiescent environment in which buoyancy develops, the Bureau of Mines developed three time-dependent mathematical models, which were used to calculate the temperature increase associated with chemisorption of oxygen by the coal. In each model, spontaneous heating is driven by an Arrhenius first-order reaction between the oxygen and coal. Two models are two-dimensional, and one is one-dimensional. In the first two-dimensional model, a constant-velocity forced convection airflow is specified; and in the other, buoyant flow is allowed to develop in the absence of forced convection. The third model evaluates the airflow from Darcy's law and a specification of the pressure at the surface of a one-dimensional porous coalbed. Numerical computations demonstrated how each model could be used to predict the onset of spontaneous heating when the porous coalbed was subjected to constraints of an imposed internal heat source or a high temperature airflow. The effects of particle size and coalbed compaction upon spontaneous heating were examined with the third model.

The data collected during this investigation indicate that the chromiumgadolinium system has extensive liquid immiscibility and one eutectic point . Liquid immiscibility occurred at temperatures above the monotectic isotherm , 1,830 ° C , which extended from less than 0.25 to about 85 weight - percent gadolinium . The eutectic was at 96 percent gadolinium and 1,170 ° C. Gadolinium and chromium were the only phases in this system . There was a solid solubility of less than 0.25 percent gadolinium in chromium at 1,730 ° C and less than 0.10 percent chromium in gadolinium at 1,160 ° C. The alloys were prepared by nonconsumable - electrode arc - melting , and the alloy system was investigated by heat treatment , metallography , thermal analysis , and X- ray diffraction . All the melting , heat treatments , and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or in helium because of the reactivity of chromium and gadolinium with the components present in the atmosphere at elevated temperatures .

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal , expressed in British thermal units , and the composition as shown by proximate analyses . To these , when required , are added the ash- softening temperature , the free - swelling index , and the Hardgrove grindability index . Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal , and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract . The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4/ issued by the Bureau of Mines ; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and , if it is not , a price adjustment is made . Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples ( samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks ) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids . In addition , the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal . The Government purchased approximately 5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1962. In connection with these purchases , the Bureau analyzed 7,114 samples . These are published ( table 1 ) for the use of Government officials and the public . A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States or , where production is small in any one State , by groups of adjacent States . This report describes a method of concentrating the insoluble organic material (kerogen) in a rich Colorado oil shale without any apparent alteration of its original chemical form. The method involved treating finely pulverized shale with dilute acetic acid at room temperature to remove the carbonates, which act as a cementing agent for the shale, and cause the shale particles to partly disintegrate into the organic and inorganic components. The acid-treated shale then was centrifuged in different liquid mediums ranging from 1.4 to 1.15 gravity to effect a mechanical separation. From a Colorado oil shale containing 48.0 percent ash, kerogen concentrates containing 43.3 to 8.7 percent ash were obtained. The carbon:hydrogen ratios of the kerogen in the original shale and the different concentrates were essentially the same. The oil:kerogen ratios calculated from Fischer assays of the above samples were essentially the same, regardless of the organic or inorganic contents. This was also true of the assay water:kerogen ratios of the same samples. These data indicate that no significant change occurred in the kerogen during the concentration process.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSince its introduction into coal mines, the use of Airdox has grown in popularity, especially in the Indiana and Illinois coal fields. Its use permits breaking dawn coal on shift, whereas the use of explosives for blasting coal on shift is prohibited by law in those States. Many of the hazards connected with the use of explosives are eliminated. The accident experience in the use of Airdox has been excellent with respect to the number of fatalities or serious injuries per million tons mined.The Federal Mine Safety Code specifies that Airdox lines should be grounded at the compressor and at other points of low resistance along the lines but should not be connected to tracks, pipe lines, or other possible power conductors. The lack of comparable and accurate statistics of coal-mine accidents in the United States as a whole led the Bureau of Mines in 1911 to undertake the collection of such data. The importance of such statistics as a basis for remedial legislation can not be overestimated, moreover they serve to indicate the results of the efforts made by the Federal Government, State mining departments, and mine operators throughout the country to lessen the hazard of coal mining. The mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries have long taken cognizance of the importance of such statistics. In Great Britain, official statistics of coal-mine accidents have been collected and published since 1851, in France since 1853, in Austria since 1875, in Germany since 1852, and in Belgium since 1831. The United States not only leads these countries in the production of coal but the output of its coal mines is greater than those of Great Britain, France, Belgium, Austria, India, Japan, and New South Wales combined. Accordingly, it is proper that there should be some official record of the accidents in this, the greatest mining industry not only in the United States but in the world. It is especially appropriate that this work should have been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, as, through its investigations of mine accidents in the field, it is constantly in close touch with coalmining conditions throughout the country. Its engineers are not only able to obtain first-hand information as to a great many accidents, but, through their special training and experience, are able to appreciate the significance of the figures reported by the coal-mine operators, thus aiding an intelligent and uniform classification 01 the accidents for the country as a whole. Further, the State mining dnpartments and State mine inspectors of every State in the country having a system of coal-mine inspection are cooperating with the bureau by sending it monthly reports of accidents in the coal mines of their respective States. The receipt of such reports places the bureau in a most advantageous position to publish promptly statistics of these accidents. Although a few years ago accurate statistics of c~al-mine accidents in the United States as a whole were entirely lacking this bureau was able to pubjiish the 1912 statistics within three n:onths after the close of the year and long before corresponding statistics had been issued by the mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries. The cooperative agreement with the State coal-mine inspectors has not only made possible the prompt publication of the statistics, but it has also enabled the bureau to classify the fatalities by months and according to cause, showing the months in which the greatest and the least number of men were killed and from what causessomething that has never before been accomplished for this country.

Mass spectrographic studies have been conducted on the positive ions and neutral species of glow discharges containing 1.0 pct S02 and 1.0 pct CO in helium. Measurements were conducted for gas pressures from 3.5 to 10.1 torr using both dc and 60-Hz ac excitation. The ion species that were observed included S+, SO+, SO+, 0+, O2+, C+, CO+, and CO2+ with lesser amounts of SO3+, (CO)2+, SCO+, and (SO?CO)+ or CS+2. Interpretation of the functional dependence of the various ionic and neutral species on pressure and applied power showed that CO reacted with the SO formed in the discharges to produce CO2 and sulfur. Deposition of elemental sulfur was observed in the plasma container.

[There is a general concept in the, coal trade that the moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. of coal from the same seam, and. surely from the same mine, is substantially a constant; that calculation of the -moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. value from the proximate analysis and B.t.u. determined in the laboratory will reveal whether a coal came from a given area or sears; and that, having this constant, the B.t.u. value of a coal sample can be calculated fairly closely upon a dry or as-received basis from the moisture and ash values of its proximate analysis.]

This report details the investigation of multiple-seam longwall subsidence conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1978 to 1989. A field investigation monitored ground surface movements over four upper-seam longwall panels and six lower-seam panels. The characteristics of the subsidence occurring as a result of mining these panels are examined; in particular, the angle of draw, subsidence development, total magnitude and areal extent, and critical width are evaluated and discussed. Comparisons are also made between the characteristics of multiple-seam longwall subsidence and single-seam longwall subsidence that occurred at the same site.

Sodium aluminate is the principal aluminum compound formed in the sinters prepared by the lime - soda sinter process for recovering aluminum from silicate source materials . The properties and characteristics of this compound were studied to improve the efficiency of the process . Crystalline sodium aluminate was prepared by sintering stoichiometric quantities of soda ash and calcined alumina for 1 hour at 1,250 ° C. The extent of aluminum extraction from sodium aluminate was determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO3 . Nearly complete extraction of aluminum from sodium aluminate was achieved only in solutions containing free NaOH in excess of that supplied by the salt through hydrolysis . About 42.2 to 68.8 percent of the aluminum was extracted in water or in solutions of Na₂ CO . The precipitation of alumina trihydrate from sodium aluminate solutions was shown to be part of a continuous , reversible reaction according to the equation Al (OH ) A1 (OH )3 + OHThe reverse reaction dissolves alumina trihydrate in NaOH solutions to produce sodium aluminate . Approximate equilibrium concentrations were determined for the reaction at 30° , 50 ° , and 70 ° C. False apparent equilibrium conditions for the dissolution reaction appear when only a small excess of alumina trihydrate is present in the NaOH solutions . A large excess of alumina trihydrate must be present before the true equilibrium point is assured . The engineering significance of the data is summarized , showing controls that should be exercised for a successful and efficient process .

REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

Trinitrotoluene is made by the direct nitration of toluene by a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids . The exact procedure varies , but the product , where Grade I of TNT is desired , is similar , and consists largely of material that has a melting and setting point of 80.6 °c . The purification consists of draining off the liquid portions , including the acid and liquid nitro compounds . The mass is crushed and washed until the TNT is acid - free . It may still have a low-melting point due to the presence of material of lower nitration. Other isomers also have the same effect . The crystal mass may be washed with a solution of sodium sulphite , thiosulphate , sulphuric acid , or with an organic solvent such as alcohol , benzene , or carbon tetrachloride , Where a very pure product is desired , the TNT is separated by fractional crystallization from solution in organic solvents . The TNT is If it forms In some cases the material is melted during purification . agitated as it cools to prevent solidification in a solid mass . in a solid mass , this is broken up and screened . There has been some question as to the effect of the different methods of purification on the strength and sensitiveness of TNT , although all methods left a product that would give satisfactory tests .

The diamond-drill method was tried at the site selected for driving a 5- by 6 -foot air shaft at the east end of the Bellefonte mine . This method of sinking consisted , first , of drilling a 5-3/4 -inch-diameter cut hole from the surface , then drilling parallel 1.5 - inch ( EX ) holes around it at appropriate distances for a balanced blasting round . The cut hole was not charged with explosive but served as a relief chamber for the incipient expansion of the ground broken by. blasting the surrounding 1.5 - inch holes . The length of each hole was 236 feet , which was the finished depth of the shaft . The nature of the work in the air shaft was largely experimental , and many difficulties arising from the lack of special equipment and proper technique for precise alinement of the drill holes caused expensive delays before they could be overcome . Drilling the 5-3 /4 - inch hole , which was impeded by frequent core blocks in the core barrel , required 10 shifts . average advance per shift for an EX hole was about 150 feet . The The holes were charged and fired from the surface . The length of the section blasted in one cycle was 10 feet . Blasting progressed from the bottom of the shaft upward . The broken stone dropped into a chute , from which it was drawn into cars on the haulage level . The Bellefonte mine is an underground limestone mine.3/ The primary objective in undertaking the research on shaft sinking by diamond drilling was to perfect a method for driving connections between levels of the mine .

Since the introduction of electricity into the mines of the United States , the hazards incident to the industry have increased materially in both coal and metal mines . For economic reasons the tendency at present , particularly in coal mining , is decidedly toward the adoption of electrical mine machinery , including alternating current machinery , on a more extensive scale than ever before . Obviously, the growing use of such equipment will result in an ever -increasing number of underground transformer stations . The principal electrical hazards in mines are threefold ; fire , explosion, and contact . Of these , fire is the greatest hazard involved in the use of electricity underground , and several fires have originated in underground transformer and motor generator set stations . The fire hazard due to improperly installed and poorly maintained underground transformer stations is an ever-present one , and failure to take the necessariman remedial action is likely to result , sooner or later, in the destruction of life and property . Upon suggesting the necessary corrective measures with respect to such installations , one is often confronted with the statement to the effect that even though this particular hazard has existed over a period of years , there have been no unfavorable results therefrom thus far . Frequently , the desirability for action is not apparent to the mine management until it is too late . Because a mine has a record free from fires , explosions , etc. , over a number of years of operation during which these hazards existed , such good fortune should not be taken as a guarantee that this or any other mine is immune from these common dangers . When the elements of an existing hazard are properly balanced or in the right proportion, the unfortunate combination must of necessity culminate in misfortune of one kind or another. The fire hazard due to underground transformer installations can be very definitely minimized by proper installation and maintenance . In coal mines the transformer banks , connected to 2,300 and occasionally to 4,400 volt circuits , are often found located in open- ended crosscuts , mounted on concrete or timber foundations , and in nonfireproof surroundings .
