The U.S. Bureau of Mines characterized Hg-containing wastes and used a thermal-desorption process to remove and recover the contained Hg. The wastes were generated by an electrical-parts plant engaged in the assembly of Hg-containing switches and contained phenolic resins and paper insulating materials mixed with soil. The average Hg content was 396 ppm. Numerous characterization tests showed the Hg was tightly absorbed and could not be removed or concentrated by leaching or gravity separation techniques. Laboratory retort tests showed the Hg content reduced to < 16 ppm in 2 h at 400 °C; rotary-kiln, thermal-desorption tests required 4 h at 450 °C. Airflow through the retort im¬proved thermal-desorption efficiency, but vacuum operation only slightly reduced the temperature needed for thermal desorption. Offgases from decomposition of organic materials were burned in a high-temperature afterburner and subsequently cooled in a heat exchanger to condense water vapor. Finally, the Hg vapor was condensed and absorbed from the offgas by activated charcoal. Mercury recovery was over 99.99 pct of the desorbed Hg. Thermal-desorption processes have had wide application to many Hg-containing wastes, and historical experience in Hg mining has demonstrated its potential cost effectiveness.

This research was conducted with the objective of suppressing the respirable dust in coal mines by foam application. A formulation was developed for making a water-based, high-expansion, and limited stability foam. A horizontal boring machine was used as a laboratory coal mining model for generating coal dust. A modified laboratory foam generator was built. Foam was applied directly to the point at which dust was being formed by the cutter of the boring machine working against a block of coal. Coal dust was sampled with an impinger and analyzed for the particle count and particle size distribution. Coal dust suppression test results on freshly generated dust have demonstrated very clearly that in laboratory scale experiments over 90% of the respirable coal dust can be suppressed by foam. These tests were run when initial coal du t concentrations were 10 and 70 million particles per cubic foot (mppcf).

The basic concepts of computerized monitoring are introduced along with its advantages and limitations. Current Bureau projects covering mine-monitoring systems are described, and some of the major areas of concern that should be addressed by future projects are outlined.

Data from experiments and literature on gas and dust explosions in closed vessels are presented to show the effects of the vessel size and shape; the initial pressure, temperature, and turbulence; and the fuel-air ratio and the strength of ignition source on pressure and rate of pressure rise. An attempt is made to correlate some of these parameters with an elementary mathematical model. Analyses of data on 17 vessels--spherical, cubical, cylindrical, and rectilinear in shape--ranging from 0,018 to 905 cubic feet in volume were made. Although the study was initiated to provide information primarily on dust-explosion phenomena, some data were obtained for gas explosions so that the factor of initial turbulence caused by the pneumatic blast used to disperse dust could be evaluated. The mathematical interpretation of the explosion phenomena was in general accord with the experimental data, and correlation was obtained for several factors affecting explosion development. Neither vessel size nor shape affected maximum pressure (when heat loss was neglected). The rate of pres-sure rise decreased as vessel size increased, and the rate was proportional to the ratio of the surface area of the vessel to its volume. Induced initial turbulence markedly increased the rate of pressure rise and slightly increased the maximum pressure. Changes in initial pressure produced proportional changes in maximum pressure and rate of pressure rise. Initial temperature and maximum pressure were inversely related, but initial temperature had little effect on the maximum rate of pressure rise. Comparative experiments showed no appreciable difference in explosion development of gas and dust fuels. The vessels and experimental work are described, and all data are given in tables. The mathematical model will facilitate extrapolation from laboratory to industrial conditions and will allow comparison of results obtained in different laboratories.

Economic solutions of problems of mine-ventilation improvement can be found by mathematical analyses of alternative methods of procedure, but, in the case of our older bituminous-coal mines, the airway network is usually so complex that mathematical solutions are too tedious to be practical. Recourse usually is made to extremely costly and uncertain trial-and-error procedures with the existing layout and equipment. The resulting errors often prove costly and sometimes create hazardous conditions. Both the economic and safely aspects of alternative methods of ventilation improvement may be rapidly and cheaply investigation with analogue computers. An electrical analogue computer, designed and built especially for analyzing mine-ventilation-distribution problems, has been placed in service by the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh, Pa., Experiment Station. It is a nonlinear, low-voltage, fluid network analyzer of a type developed by Malcolm S. Mcllroy, professor of electrical engineering at Cornell University. It was designed in close coopera¬tion with Professor Mcllroy and built by the Standard Electric Time Co., Springfield, Mass. It is the seventh unit of this type to be placed in service and the first designed for mine airflow problems. The other six were designed for either water- or gas-distribution analyses. Three are much larger and more expensive units. The largest unit has a capacity of 20 sources, 576 mains, and 180 loads, or regulated-flow paths. The Bureau unit has a capacity of 5 sources, 128 mains, and 48 loads.

During the 5-year period 1906-10 inclusive, 84 major disasters (a major disaster being one in which 5 or more lives are lost) occurred in the coal mines of the United States, or an average of 17 per year, and the total number of fatalities from coal-mine gas and dust explosions (major plus minor) for the 5 years aggregated 2,338 or 477.6 per year. The monotonous continuance of coal-mine disasters month by month aroused the people of the United States to such an extent that it was felt necessary for the Federal Government to try to do something looking to the avoidance of the admittedly excessive loss of life in our coal mines, and this was one of the deciding factors in the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mires in 1910. That results have been obtained in this particular cause of coal-mine accidents may be seen from the fact that for the year 1933 but one major explosion disaster occurred in the coal mines of then united States and the total number killed in that disaster was 7. Unquestionably the coal-mining industry through use of oaf or mining practices and aided by the various kinds of work of the Bureau of Mines looking to the prevention of mine fires and explosions is in large part responsible for this very creditable change. If the gas and dust explosion fatality rate of 1.059 per million tons of coal produced during the period 1906-10 inclusive had continued to the first of January 1934, instead of the 6,373 deaths which actually occurred due to gas and dust explosions, there would have been 13,480. Hence, during the 23 years existence of the Bureau of Mines there has apparently been a saving of about 7,102 probable deaths, or an average of more than 300 per year, from gas and dust explosions as against the number which would have occurred had the 1.059 gas and dust explosion fatality rate for the period 1906-10 continued. Thirty-nine persons were killed in all kinds of explosions (both major and minor) in the coal mines of the United States in 1933; if the 1.059 gas and dust fatality rate of the 1900-10 period had been in effect in 1933, about 400 persons world have been killed. Unquestionably, the various teachings of the U.S. Bureau of Mines looking to the avoidance of explosions and fires in mines have had a vital influence in reducing the number of explosions and fires and also in decreasing their destruction in case they occur.

Electric - smelting studies were made on titaniferous materials obtained from the Klukwan and Snettisham , Alaska ; Choteau , Mont .; and Iron Mountain , Wyo . , deposits with the objective of determining the feasibility of producing pig iron and an enriched titania slag in one test series and pig iron alone in another test series . In addition , related studies were conducted to determine the amenability of Choteau crude ore to wet -magnetic separation and to determine the quality of steel that could be produced from the titaniferous pig iron . The continuous smelting tests were made in a three - phase , submerged - arc , electric furnace , and the laboratory steelmaking tests were made in a singlephase electric - arc furnace . A continuous , belt - type , wet - magnetic separator was used in conjunction with a ball mill and a spiral classifier in recovering titaniferous magnetite from the crude Choteau ore . Pig irons containing less than 0.05 percent phosphorus or sulfur were readily produced from the titaniferous materials ; iron recoveries ranged from 92 to 98 percent . The Choteau ore was ground to minus 65 - mesh to produce a concentrate containing 60 percent or more iron . The steel produced from the titaniferous pig iron was a high - quality product .

A metallic displacement process, utilizing easily available steel wool or steel window screen, was devised and successfully used for the recovery of silver from waste photographic fixing solutions. Laboratory and prolonged commercial-scale testing established that the iron filament type unit will efficiently precipitate silver, as a high-grade sludge, from acidic waste photographic fixing solutions ranging in grade from less than 1 to over 10 grams of silver per liter. Data and design information are presented to facilitate the construction and operation of a practical unit of any desired size. A smelting process for recovering pure silver from precipitated sludge containing 27 to 80 percent silver was devised.

The Coeur d&apos;Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district&apos;s longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 3,924 samples, representing the products of 116 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1954. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers, The data were obtain& by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation, A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

An integrated process for recovering metal from nonmagnetic auto-shredder reject scrap was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The methods used were air classification, water elutriation, screening, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-media separation. Metal recoveries in this process were projected at 39 percent copper and copper alloys, 53 percent aluminum, 96 percent iron, and 98 percent zinc die cast. An economic evaluation of the conceptual process indicated that a facility designed to reclaim the reject scrap from 200 shredded automobiles daily could be profitable. Total investment in this plant was estimated at $321,000; the discounted rate of return before taxes was 53 percent.

The mineral asbestos, because of its unique fibrous character, is allied to cotton and wool but has the advantage of heat and fire resistance; therefore, it supplies many industrial needs for which no substitutes are yet available. This report covers the essential features of the asbestos industry, including occurrence, production, mining, milling, utilization, international trade, and marketing. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products, but domestic sources furnish only a small fraction of the raw material required. As the United States is dependent to so great an extent on foreign supplies of raw materials, the bulletin deals at length with the asbestos industry in foreign lands. Several reports now available deal with the industry in individual countries. Among them are Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, by J. G. Ross; Asbestos in the Union of South Africa, by A. L. Hall; and a series of articles on the Russian industry, by Walter A. Ru Keyser. These have been drawn upon freely, and full acknowledgment is hereby made for the helpful information thus secured. The file of the magazine Asbestos also has furnished many valuable data touching all phases of the industry. Many other books and articles listed in the bibliography at the end of this bulletin have been utilized and have been supplemented by the author&apos;s intimate acquaintance with the industry for about 20 years. The intent is to present a concise, world-wide, historical, technical, and economic treatment of the asbestos industry.

Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

The danger to personnel, equipment, and pillar structure created by the spalling of a coal rib can be minimized by installing rib bolts. To assure that a configured support system will maintain a coal rib, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a rib bolt system based on a nonpreventable failure concept. A statistical equation quantitatively relates the amount of rib retained to the bolt spacing and the width of the spalled material. Laboratory test results show that the equation accurately predicts the amount of material retained and confirm the validity of the support concept. The examination of rib bolting at a coal mine experiencing rib sloughage provides evidence that the effectiveness of the support can be related to the failure pattern of the spalled material. An analysis of roof and roof support reaction to rib sloughage at the mine indicated that the rib sloughage had little effect on roof stability. Although supporting ribs might not affect roof stability, laboratory test results indicate that the material retained by the support can sustain a load up to 20 pct of the intact compressive strength of the material.

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5 results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June 1929 to July 193C in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston. Mass., and during 1931 in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and to develop methods of eliminating these hazards. These investigations have demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.The investigation carried out during 1932 has been along lines similar to those conducted during 1929, 1930, and 1931 test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and the other an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., was continuously employed during the year in the testing of gases in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigations, all tests were numbered. The test-data sheets, on which the information regarding the tests was recorded, were prepared in triplicate, ono copy going to the Edison Co., one to the gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. These test-data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record of each manhole tested was immediately available. A typical test-data sheet was given in the 1931 report. These data sheets were found to entirely satisfactory and no changes were made during the 1932 investigation. The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres, shipment of the samples to Pittsburgh, and method of analysis has been the same as that described in the 1931 report and need not be repeated here. Likewise, there has been no change in the method of calculation of explosibility of the samples analyzed or the use of charcoal filter tests given in appendix A."

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 15,174-acre Sleeping Giant study area, including the 6,112-acre Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lewis and Clark County, MT, about 30 miles north of Helena. Sleeping Giant Mountain trends west-northwest from the Missouri to the eastern crest of Little Prickly Pear Canyon (the route of Interstate 15), and has several summits over 6,000 ft. Geologically, the area is in the Disturbed Belt, and a large block of Middle Precambrian metasedimentary siltstone and underlying shale has been thrust northeast over younger, sedimentdry volcanic and intrusive rocks.

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. The Bureau of Mines has been involved for several years in the development of processes for the recycling of solid wastes. As part of this program, a project was initiated to determine the feasibility of producing secondary pig iron from auto scrap. During the test period, 86,000 pounds of shredded auto scrap, along with petroleum coke and fluxing agents, was charged to a submerged-arc furnace of 1-ton nominal capacity. Eighty-eight thousand pounds of pig iron, with an average carbon content of 3.90 percent and an average copper content of 0.2 percent, was produced at an electrical consumption of 512 kW-hr per net ton. A cost estimate of the process showed that the pig, iron might be produced at a cost of $57 per ton.

The present discussion first presents data to justify the fireproofing of mine shafts. This is followed by a brief outline of fireproofing methods with examples from practice. A summary of authoritative recommendations on fire prevention concludes the discussion. Acknowledgment is made to D. J. Parker, district engineer, Mine Safety Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, for his valuable criticism of the paper. Fireproofing a mine shaft implies lining the shaft with fireproof material or rendering fireproof the material already composing the shaft lining. A brief study of the part mine shafts and shaft stations have played in disastrous end tragic underground fires furnishes convincing evidence that every possible effort to make all mine shafts fireproof is amply justified. The fire hazard in coal minus obviously is much greater than in metal mines. In this discussion the point of views is mainly that of the metal miner; it is tine opinion of the writer that all fires in metal mines are preventable.
