The first national survey covering sales of fuel oil by States and principal uses was made in 1926 by E. B. Swanson of the Bureau of Mines (then under the U. S. Department of Commerce) under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute. This annual study, covering the market for fuel oil, was made through 1930 with the financial help of the institute bat has since been continued by the Bureau up to the present time. The scope and coverage of the survey have gradually changed over the years as new uses for fuel oil have been found and new products have come into importance resulting in market expansion. Range oil (No. 1 fuel oil or kerosine) came into use for cooking and space-heating daring the depression era in New England, and it was first reported as a total in the 1931 survey. In 1934 the sales were compiled on a State basis. State totals for distillate fuel oil, Diesel fuel, and residual fuel-oil sales were first shown for 1934 and by principal uses and States in 1937. Kerosine deliveries by States and main uses were also released for the first time in 1937.

The electrolytic reduction of uranium dioxide to molten uranium in fluoride baths at approximately 1,200° C was demonstrated. Electrolyte constituents were BaF2, UF4, and either MgF2 or LiF. Preliminary laboratory-scale experiments were made in which the uranium oxide was added continuously for 3 to 5 hours to the cell during electrolysis. Over 1,000 grams of metal of 99-8 percent purity was made in some tests, Major impurities were aluminum, barium, iron, silicon, carbon, and oxygen. The effects of cell design, geometry, and bath composition were investigated. Electrode arrangement was the most important factor in cell performance.

Roof bolt system design means the selection of the type, length, capacity, and pattern of bolts for a particular application. Despite research efforts dating back 50 years, no design methodology has found wide acceptance. This paper begins by identifying four mechanisms that roof bolts use to reinforce the ground. It argues that the reinforcement mechanism is determined by the roof geology and stress level, not by the type of bolt. Next, the attributes of roof bolts are discussed in the light of recent research, including anchorage mechanism, installed tension, length, capacity, timing of installation, and installation quality. Several significant areas of controversy are identified. Design methods from around the world are discussed, including those based on empirical research, numerical modeling, and roof monitoring. Finally, some simple guidelines for preliminary design of roof bolt systems are proposed based on statistical analysis of roof support performance at 37 U.S. mines.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has placed stringent limitations on the noise levels in which employees may work. This act can result in both increased labor costs because of noise-exposure time limitations and in high capital costs for modification of present equipment, and the design of new equipment, to comply with the law. The development of new noise-control systems is thus of immediate interest to industry. A current Research program at U. S. Steel is aimed at developing methods of controlling both the exhaust-air noise and the mechanical noise of a Stoper drill, a pneumatic percussive tool used for roof-bolting purposes in coal mines which has an approximate air consumption of 100 cubic feet per minute. This program is being performed under a contract between USS Engineers and Consultants, Inc. and the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In previous work at U. S. Steel, kidney-shaped mufflers were designed that wrap around the air leg of the drill for control of the exhaust noise. These mufflers were designed with the aid of a digital computer program that predicts the acoustic performance of mufflers.

"A relationship exists between the quartz contents in the underground coal nine airborne dust samples and those in the coal and host rocks that are mined [17, 18, 19] The prescribed method for quartz analysis in respirable airborne coal dust samples is the MSHA P-7 method. Accurate quartz analysis procedures are needed for bulk samples in order to predict the potential quartz content in airborne nine dust, which in turn will aid the design of quartz dust control procedures during mining. thereby reducing the airborne quartz dust in underground atmospheres. The requirements of this method are that the amount of quartz is the sample be less than 250ug, and the total sample weight less than 2,500 ug. Unlike with airborne dust samples, there are no limitations to the available mass of bulk samples. However, these are no standard procedures for the preparation of bulk samples for scanning or prescribed methods for quartz analysis. The NIOSH and MSHA methods are certified for roped* dust and the acceptance of these methods for bulk samples assumes that the bulk samples will be reduced to the conditions specified for respirable dust samples. An alternative method is X-ray diffraction, which provides higher average quartz values than those obtained from P-7 method for the same samples.An investigation was carried out to determine the optimal procedure for preparing the bulk samples for the IR and XRD analyses. In this paper, the investigations on the effects of calibration, particle sizes, matrix composition, interferrous, and behavior of the filter substances on IR, XRD and FTIR results are presented. The error introduced by the presence of kaolinite and a new sample asking procedure to reduce it are discussed. The problems experienced with conventional sample holders for scanning were eliminated with the design and development of a new hollow sample holder. Quantitative comparison of quartz determinations by IR, XRD and MR methods on coal, roof and floor rocks, and airborne dust samples are presented. The important factors affecting the results of quartz analysis methods are: 1) bulk sample preparation for obtaining representative and homogeneous analysis samples: 2) particle size distributions of the analysis samples and calibration standards; 3) qualitative matrix composition of the analysis sample; 4) matching calibration standards to analysis sample; 5) substrates for sample deposition during analysis sample preparation; 6) procedures for analysis sample mounting; 7) selection of proper portions of she response profile for insanity measurement; and 8) interferences of spurious phases with the critical analyses. The recommendations of this study are important to enable comparisons and interpretations of analysis and research results."

Crude Minnesota taconite was charged in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace so that smelting characteristics of such highly siliceous raw materials could be studied and smelting costs compared with those of a standard Mesabi ore. The Bureau recognized that the highly siliceous nature of the crude ore and its relatively low metallic content would be serious economic deterrents to commercial use of the raw taconite, but compensating factors would be low capital investment in production facilities, large tonnage available on short notice, high recoveries of iron, and low delivered cost. Crude taconite smelted readily in the experimental blast furnace. Coke consumption per ton of metallic product was very high, compared with the average established requirements for smelting normal grades of metalliferous raw materials. Slag rates were also inordinately high. Metal quality was erratic as to silicon, and sulfur contents were objectionably high.

Workshops were held in eight states during the period from December 12. 1975. through June 25, 1976, under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract to the University of Missouri-Rolla. The workshops were designed to help define the Bureau's research and development priorities. At each workshop a summary of the current Bureau mine reclamation research was presented which was followed by identification of problems associated with mine land reclamation in the state where the meeting was being held. Discussions included the seriousness of problems locally and how the Bureau could best undertake research to assist the state in solving the problems identified. Participants included representatives of state agencies, educational institutions, and companies involved in surface mining. Attendance at these workshops totaled 201 persons who displayed a wide variety of opinions and ideas as to what should be done In government research and development efforts. A breakdown of these attendees is as follows: 91 state and Federal employees; 69 mine operators, equipment manufacturers and consultants; 33 educators and researchers; and 8 others representing such varied interests as environmental and conservation groups, news media and students .

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. The Bureau of Mines developed a flue gas desulfurization process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with energy and mineral-processing plants. The modified citrate process involves absorption of sulfur dioxide (S02) in a buffered citric acid solution. The S02-loaded solution is regenerated by countercurrent contact with steam in a packed tower. The wet S02 product is then dried and can be liquefied or further processed to make sulfuric acid. Test data from process investigation unit studies are presented. Material balances, flowsheets, and cost estimates are given for recovering S02 from copper smelter reverberatory gas, lead smelter sintering machine tail gas, and power-plant stack gas. Operating cost estimates show the process will add $0.04 per pound of copper, $0.01 per pound of lead, and $0.015 per kwhr to the cost of the respective operations. These costs could be substantially reduced if a source of waste heat was avail-able to provide the process steam requirements.

Chromite has been produced commercially for slightly more than a century. Developed, at one time, chiefly as a chemical pigment raw material, it has subsequently found extensive application in other chemical industries - as a refractory material for furnace linings and as the sole source of the metal chromium. For some years prior to 1914, its use as a refractory predominated; but post-war development in alloy steels, principally stainless steels, enhanced the metallurgical demand in the form of ferrochrome with a consequent increase in the demand for chromite. More recently direct reduction of chromite in alloy-steel manufacture has been applied to a limited extent. Alloy steels containing varying amounts of chromium, with or without other alloying elements, now find extensive use in a ride variety of ways - in structural material, machines, industrial equipment transportation by land, sea, and air, sanitary equipment, food preservation, and a multitude of other uses. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small--scale continuous tests of weathered mica pegmatite ores from Hart County, Ga., to determine the technical feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two modifications of the Bureau-developed anionic-cationic method were used. In one method, sodium carbonate and calcium lignin sulfonate were used for pH control and quartz depression; this method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.5 percent mica with a recovery of 91.4 percent. In the other modification, lime and sodium silicate were used with the calcium lignin sulfonate; concentrates containing 98.9 percent mica with a recovery of 86 percent were obtained.

In coal mining it is essential to maintain the roof over working places and roadways in the safest condition possible. To this end every effort should be made to win the coal with the least injury to the immediate roof strata, as broken strata certainly present a greater hazard than a sound roof. The chief causes of injury to the roof in mining are inherent in the method of development and recovery and the blasting practices followed. The first, which may produce severe stresses in the roof, weakening it over comparatively large areas has been discussed in previous papers3 and will not be treated here. The second cause is local in effect, but with the same general method of blasting being employed throughout a mine having uniform roof conditions, similar effects on the roof may be expected. In the Bureau's investigation of accidents caused by falls of roof and coal it has been necessary to make a careful study of blasting practices and their effect on the immediate roof. The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of the observed methods of blasting on different types of roof and to point out methods that have been proved to be least harmful to the roof strata. The data used in preparing this paper have been compiled from reports made by Bureau engineers engaged in the study of falls of roof and coal, and embrace mines opened in the Pittsburgh coal in Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh and Sewickley coals in West Virginia.

The Artillery Peak manganese ores , from one of the largest known manganese deposits in the United States , present a difficult problem in concentration because they are low-grade and the association of manganese and gangue minerals is intimate and complex. The known size of this deposit has justified investigation of processes such as leaching, wherein preliminary enrichment of the original feed might be advantageous .. Therefore , the ore-dressing studies on Artillery Peak ores were carried on with the object not only of making directly marketable manganese products but also of removing acid-consuming calcite and raising the grade of ore for leachingplant feed . Owing to the extent of the deposits , test work was carried on at the Salt Lake laboratories in considerable detail on several lots of ore of varying composition . This paper summarizes the results obtained from laboratory testing of four samples obtained by engineers of the Mining Branch from the Maggie Canyon area of the Artillery Peak deposit . Also included are results obtained from testing one sample of Chapin Group ore , which was considered representative of numerous very low-grade ores submitted from the Artillery Peak district . During the course of the investigations , many data were obtained and compiled , but for the sake of brevity , data of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed and only those tests giving the more pertinent results are discussed in detail ...

The United States has extensive reserves of peat. Peat and muck lands are estimated at approximately 79 million acres, with reserves of 13.8 billion net tons. Within the past decade domestic production of peat has increased 2-1/2 times, and apparent consumption has tripled. During the same period imports have increased greatly, and in 1955 they almost equaled domestic production. The substantial increase in the demand for peat in the United States was due chiefly to expanding markets in agriculture and horticulture, for the reason that in this country peat is used primarily as a source of organic matter to improve the physical condition of mineral soils and as a mulch for shrubbery. A valuable constituent of any soil is its organic matter, and its depletion will injure cultivated soils and subject them to greater erosion.

1. A total of 14,413 mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Nearly half (48.9%) were sand and gravel operations, followed by stone (28.5%), coal (14.7%), nonmetal (5.7%), and metal mines (2.1%). 2. Mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers1 (down 3.9% from 1999). Independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property (up 8.6% from 1999). Coal operators accounted for 26.8% of reported employee hours, followed by stone operators (25.9%) and sand and gravel operators (12.1%). 3. Eighty-four (84) work-related mine fatalities occurred in 2000 compared to 90 the year before. •The mine fatality rate was 29.8 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers compared to a fatality rate of4.6 per 100,000 employees for all private industry. •Thirty-one percent (31%) of the fatalities occurred in underground work areas, which account for only17% of total employment. •Although the largest number of fatalities (28) occurred among miners who work for coal operators, coal contractor employees had the highest fatality rate (61.1 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers). 4.There were 10,839 nonfatal lost-time injuries reported to MSHA, occurring at a rate of 3.8 injuries per 100full-time equivalent workers, and resulting in a total of 417,918 lost workdays.2 •Among all employees,3 the highest injury rate occurred among coal operator employees (5.6 nonfatal injuries per 100 full-time equivalent workers). •The highest percentage (34.7%) of nonfatal lost-time injuries were due to handling materials (e.g., over-exertion in lifting, pulling, or pushing objects), which also accounted for the greatest percentage of lost workdays (29.3%). •Among the most frequently occurring injuries, the most severe (as measured by the median number of days lost) were associated with accidents involving falls of ground, the use of powered haulage, and slips or falls. •The most frequently reported part of the body injured was the back (22.9% of all injuries). Back injuries accounted for the highest percentage of lost workdays (21.6%). 5.Seven hundred sixty-seven (767) cases of occupational illness were reported to MSHA. •The most frequently reported illness was repetitive trauma, resulting in joint, tendon, or muscle inflammation or irritation (37.3%). •There were 155 (20.2%) illnesses reported as hearing loss. The majority (68.4%) of hearing loss cases occurred among surface workers. •Coal workers' pneumoconiosis accounted for 14.5% of reported illnesses.

"An active list of permissible explosives was published in September 1935 as part of United States Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 32S6, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. Blasting Devices Approved. Prior to July 31, 1935."" This list included 154 brand names,Changes in the list that have been authorized subsequently placed 24 addi¬tional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a re¬sult of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. In the first half of 1990, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in August led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. The subsequent oil shock contributed to a dampening of the U.S. economy, and the U.S. gross national product rose only 0.9 % to $5,463 billion (U.S. billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The U.S. Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. After the Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, allocations, and supply expansion, lapsed on October 20, 1990, the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority to ensure that orders of the Armed Forces and defense atomic energy programs were given priority treatment.

This chapter analyses the parameters influencing initial design of communication systems, for new mines and upgrading existing systems. Paragraph 5.2 outlines those variables that must be taken into account during the design stages of a new wired phone system. Recommended features, general requirements, and how they can be implemented are treated in this section. Paragraph 5.3 describes ways of improving or extending the range of trolley carrier phone systems and pager phone systems already installed in the mine. 5.2 New Phone System Design The task of designing an adequate communication, control, and monitoring system for an underground mine must be addressed on a system basis. In addition to insuring that effective voice communication is established, any new system should take into account present and future requirements of remote control and monitoring functions. Chapter 4 illustrated the drastic savings in response time that can be realized when remote control and monitoring are integrated into the overall communication system. The importance of including control and monitoring in the overall design plan for any system cannot be overemphasized. Because each mine is unique, and thus usually has its own special operating characteristics and communication requirements, there is no such thing as "the one best system" to meet the requirements of all mines. The optimum communication, control, and monitoring system for a mine must be one that has been tailored to meet the special requirements of that particular mine. Factors that must be considered during system design include- a. Type of mine and mining methods (low- or high-seam coal, deep hardrock mine, stope caving, longwall, room and pillar, etc.). b. Maximum number of working sections. c. Expected mine growth rate and eventual maximum size. d. Haulage methods (tracked trolley, diesel, belt, etc.). e. Underground power distribution system (dc, ac, or both). f. Features desired (two-way radio paging, private line capability for emergency use, etc.). g. Redundant or backup systems for use during outages of the normal system. Although no two mines are alike, the following items have been established as the main characteristics desired for any underground communication system: 1. Multiple Communication Paths to Outside--the objective here is to give all telephones a second method of communicating with the surface. 2. Audible Emergency Signaling--the communication system provides the main means of alerting miners during emergencies. The system should include means to broadcast distinct audible signals for emergency signaling. Initiation of these signals should probably be controlled from. a central outside point, such as a surface control room. 3. Emergency Override--provisions should be included to permit any conversation to be overridden with emergency communication. 4. This Information Circular covers States west of the Mississippi, and Information Circular 8704 covers States east of the Mississippi. These data replace previously published compilations of energy consumption statistics by States and districts. Future annual studies are planned using the same Btu conversion factors applied in these two Information Circulars.
