"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. "The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous miner- generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory- generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM ). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared. IntroductionIn many biomedical studies, researchers routinely introduce a dust mass into an experimental environment to assess the response of a biological entity, usually lung macrophages in vitro or a live laboratory animal, to the dust mass. To provide data of maximum usefulness, it is highly desirable to use dust with characteristics of actual mine airborne dust. The primary objective of this research was to produce dusts in the laboratory similar in chemical, mineralogical, and physical characteristics to mine airborne dusts. This paper outlines the evaluation of the physical characteristics of the lab-generated dusts.Particle shape analysis is perhaps the least-developed area in mineral-related particle science and technology. There are still no standard methods or instruments to scientifically quantify particle shapes. To date, many attempts have been made to characterize particle shapes. A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by halt townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 halt-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The Descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each halt township is given with the discussion covering that area.

In 1987 Wyoming became the largest coal producing state in the country. The state is known for its extensive coal resources and extremely thick coal seams. Wyoming's coal reserves total about 69.3 billion tons, or 14.2 percent of the U.S. coal reserve. Coal seams range generally from 10 to 80 feet in thickness, although one seam is 220 feet thick. The coal-bearing areas of Wyoming underlie approximately 41 percent of the state's total land area. Wyoming's coal ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous. Most of the coal produced is subbituminous from the Powder River coal region near Gillette. The presence of coal in Wyoming was discovered before 1834 on the Belle Fourche River. The state's first mine opened in Carbon County in 1865, and with the completion of the trans- continental railroad, the demand for coal increased. Currently approximately 80 percent of Wyoming's coal production is shipped out-of-state to meet the growing demand for low- sulfur coal to fuel electric generating plants. Wyoming received conditional regulatory approval November 26, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 14, 1983.

Spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides and resultant fires are serious problems in underground mines. The Bureau of Mines has con-ducted fundamental thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) research to deter-mine the mechanisms and factors governing the rate of low-temperature pyrite oxidation, and to identify possible inhibitors to spontaneous oxidation and combustion. The mechanism of low-temperature pyrite oxidation was found to be topochemical, meaning that the oxidation process is controlled by the chemical reaction at the interface between pyrite (FeS2) and iron sulfate (FeS04)' An activation energy of 8.9 kcal/mol FeS2 was obtained for oxidation of minus 500-mesh pyrite in an atmosphere of 60 vol pct water vapor and 40 vol pct . Water-vapor content of the atmosphere was found to be the critical factor in the rate of spontaneous oxidation of pyrite, with a water-vapor content greater than 20 vol pct needed for accelerated oxidation. An atmosphere of pure oxygen resulted in negligible oxidation. The rate of pyrite oxidation is also greatly affected by the particle size of pyrite. Pyrite-oxidation rate increased drastically for particles less than 40 ~m. Room-temperature pyrophoric behavior was observed for freshly ground unoxidized pyrite (55 pct minus 5 ~m) upon exposure to air. Addition of water-adsorbing materials such as activated alumina (Alz03) decreased the rate of pyrite oxidation.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines program for the discovery and development of critical and essential mineral deposits, the Darwin district, Inyo County, Calif., was chosen for investigation as a possible source of, tungsten ore. Two properties were active in the district at the time. One was producing tungsten concentrate and the other was preparing to produce tungsten concentrate as a byproduct in the milling of lead-zinc ore. The objective of the project set up by the Bureau was to investigate promising areas and to sample, thoroughly those which preliminary inspection indicated contained tungsten ore. Work was begun November 17) 1941, and completed January 19, 1942. In the course of the project, 18 localities were inspected and 9 were sampled. The following pages brief the history, note the location, and outline the physical features and geology of the district. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is described and supplemented with assay maps.

"The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. Many investigations***** bearing on the aspects considered in this paper have been carried out in the past."

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples from seven deposits in the Pacific Northwest were tested for amenability to various beneficiation techniques. The samples obtained by the Bureau's Office of Mineral Resources at Spokane, Washington represent a large potential source of titanium. This report summarizes the results of tests at the Bureau's Metallurgy Research Center, Albany, Oregon. Recoveries from tabling placer samples were about 50 percent at grades of 30 percent titanium dioxide. Comprehensive data on market prices for crude minerals and mineral products for the world as a whole do not exist, and even the data that are available are not necessarily compatible between countries, particularly between the market economy countries and the centrally planned economy countries. Further, it should be evident that the actual delivered price for a small quantity of any specific commodity at some point substantially removed from a production facility or a seacoast port will differ appreciably from that for a large volume of the same product at or near its production source or a major import center. Nevertheless, the regularly published prices of selected major mineral commodities in key market areas can be regarded as indicative of general world price trends.

The residues resulting from the retort distillation of zinc ores have from 40 to 75 per cent of the weight of the original ore and contain from 5 to 15 per cent zinc . A rough estimate indicates that approximately 450,000 tons of residues are produced annually in the United States , containing about 36,000 tons of zinc . Besides the current production of residues there are at many smelter sites large accumulations from past operations which are available for treatment if this can be done profitably . In addition to their zinc content the residues contain much unconsumed coal , which has been carbonized during the distillation process , and those from most western ores also contain lead and silver . In this paper is summarized the information obtained in a survey , recently made by the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , of processes which are in use or which have been suggested for the treatment of retort residues . The complete report of the survey is to be published as a Technical Paper of the Bureau of Mines .

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a study of methods to improve the efficiency of the process used to pickle stainless steels. A review of the literature on pickling of stainless steels showed that the chemistry of several process operations involved in the pickling of stainless steels is not fully understood, and that further research could improve the pickling efficiency. The benefits of this research would be a reduction in the annual loss of several thousands of tons of critical minerals such as nickel and chromium, and a reduction in the amount of solids and spent acid solution that are currently discarded. The conclusion from this review is that further research is needed in four operations that either directly or indirectly influence the pickling process: hot working, annealing, conditioning, and the actual operation of pickling, Laboratory studies of the pickling operation are presently in progress.

"INTRODUCTION Exploration of the Iron Mountain and Bader iron-ore deposits in Llano County and the Gamble deposit in Mason County, Texas, was begun by the Bureau of Mines in January and completed in May 1944. The deposits had been examined by A. B. Needham, district engineer of the Bureau, in November 1942. Detailed geophysical studies by the gravity method as well as with a dip needle were made by the Bureau of Economic Geology 3/ of the University of Texas and the Federal Geological Survey. 4/ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn the program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy., It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploration project as soon as practicable after its completion. This report comprises a brief outline of the experimental cracking of natural gas in a water-gas generator at Louisville, Kentucky, and a discussion of the results obtained. The work was done under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. The re-forming or partial cracking of natural gas is not a new process, but one which has been employed in the manufacture of city gas for a number of years. However, the apparatus used heretofore was not a water-gas generator containing a bed of ignited fuel, but instead it was a plurality of connected chambers containing spaced and arranged checker bricks, with means for heating the bricks and for admitting the natural gas. The procedure previously followed was quite different from that used during the tests at Louisville; likewise the results obtained were different. It is not uncommon for companies distributing natural gas to provide gas-generating equipment for producing manufactured gas which is used, mixed with natural gas, during periods of peak demand. Because this equipment is idle much of the time, in some instances being in use only for a few days a year, some of the gas companies have considered using it, during off-peak periods, in the manufacture of some gaseous products and for carbon black which might he produced and marketed with profit. There is one plant of this kind at Louisville. Kentucky. Its maintenance in condition ready to be operated is necessary because of the limited supply of natural gas and because of the variation in demand. The engineers of the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. considered in particular the possibility of cracking natural gas in a water-gas generator by injecting the gas into the incandescent fuel bed, thereby producing a gas comprised largely of hydrogen (H2) and carbon black, an appreciable amount of which is entrained in the gas as it leaves the generator, Because power and gas are available at low prices, Louisville was believed to be a satisfactory location for a plant which could use hydrogen. It was evident that this method of treating natural gas might directly benefit the gas company by: 1. Lowering, the cost of manufactured gas.

The Bureau of Mines used high-temperature reduction roasting, magnetic separation, acid-leaching, and autoclave precipitation processes to recover iron and manganese from brown Cuyana range ores of Minnesota. Wet magnetic separation concentrated over 90 percent of the iron in 3 of 4 ores as high grade products analyzing 74 to 85 percent iron, 2.5 to 6 percent manganese, and 3 to 10 percent SiO2. The nonmagnetic fractions were leached with dilute sulfuric acid extracting 83 to 93 percent of the contained manganese and small amounts of iron. The leach solutions contained Mn-to-Fe and Mn-to-SiO2 ratios favorable enough for possible consumption in metallurgical mane operations. Exceptionally pure Mn solutions were achieved by pressure precipitation of the remaining iron in an autoclave followed by lime precipitation of silica and alumina.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.

"Abstract. Sampling of respirable dust and analyses of samples have been partially completed for a longwall panel. Physical and compositional properties which have been characterized include:l. Details of existing mining conditions, equipment arrangements, dust control methods and operating system parameters are presented.INTRODUCTIONThrough the work of many researchers worldwide, the health of coal miners in modern societies is now protected from dangerous exposure to respirable coal mine dust. A vast amount of research culminated in the exposure-response model of Jacobsen, et al. (1971) whi3h has been used to establish the 2mg/m exposure limit in the United States. According to the model, exposure to respirable dust for 35 years at this level or less would prevent the occurrence of a clinically significant case of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The exposure limit, of course, must be adjusted whenever greater than five percent free silica exists in the respirable dust.The Jacobsen model was built around a mass concentration exposure, which showed the highest correlation with incidence and progression of CWP. As Morgan; et al. (1973) noted, howev.er, the quantity of respirable dust inhaled is not the only significant factor. It is noted that although mass of respirable dust correlates highest with the incidence of CWP, it is not a causal factor. Indeed, the insidious processes causing the disease occur on the cell-particle scale, requiring microscopic investigation."

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 3/16-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.
