This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Nines to determine the effects of impurity levels on the mechanical properties of columbium at low temperatures. High-purity, electron-bombardment-melted columbium was purchased and used as a basis material. Variations in impurity levels were obtained by arc-melting charges containing definite amounts of added impurities. Tensile tests were conducted at low temperatures. Results showed the almost pure basis metal to be ductile at minus 194° C., the lower limit of the range used, Ductility of less pure columbium appeared to depend on interstitial element content. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature appeared to be raised by increasing carbon content in the range of 50 to 730 parts per million, nitrogen content in the range of 50 to 200 parts per million, or total interstitial element content in the range of 240 to 1,380 parts per million. Some evidence was obtained indicating that decreasing cold work also raised the transition temperature, but recrystallization appeared to have no effect on it. Variations in interstitial element levels appeared to have little or no effect on ultimate strength of columbim in the range of room temperature to minus 194° C, Physical metallurgy studies of massive arc-melted and electron-bombardment- melted columbium were included in the columbium-tantalum research work assigned to the Albany Metallurgy Research Center in fiscal year 1959.

A shaft or slope bottom is that portion of a mine that is contiguous to the bottom of the main hoisting shaft or slope. It includes the terminal tracks for loaded-and empty-car storage, locomotive run-arounds, locomotive shops, charging stalls, supply rooms, pump rooms, waiting rooms, and offices for dispatcher, weighmen, and foremen. This paper will deal principally with the arrangement of tracks and the handling of cars on the bottom, but includes other data that may be affected, directly or indirectly, by the bottom lay-out. All of the mines discussed are being operated in comparatively level coal seams.

"INTRODUCTION Several mining properties in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region of Idaho were examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. As a result, a broad program of exploration was recommended for the area, particularly in the eastern end, where chances for the discovery of new ore shoots seemed favorable. This report describes the work done and the factual information obtained by the Bureau of lanes.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Representation of actual oil yields from sections of the Green River formation oil shales by two types of drill - cutting samples was evaluated . Average oil yields of single sets of mud cuttings from hydraulic rotary drilling in Colorado and gas cuttings from pneumatic rotary drilling in Utah were compared statistically with yields of core samples taken from adjacent holes . Oil yields from gas cuttings were identical to oil yields of core samples . Mud cuttings appeared to represent a section of the formation conservatively , the deficiencies increasing with increasing richness of sample . Because a large amount of the oil - yield data currently available for the Green River formation is based on mud- cutting samples , development of a valid correction method by additional testing is needed .

The mineralogical constitution of a lateritic ore dictates the type of metallurgical process that can be used to extract valuable metals such as nickel and cobalt . To provide needed mineralogical information on the interrelationships of the metals contained in domestic laterites , the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to Denver Research Institute to study the transition - type , low - grade laterites found in northern California and southern Oregon . For comparison , limonitic - type laterites from New Caledonia and the Philippines were also studied . X-ray diffraction , electron microscopy , electron beam analysis , and conventional petrography were used to determine the mineralogical associations of nickel and cobalt in the laterites . Results showed that for both laterite types studied most of the nickel and minor amounts of cobalt are associated with the mineral geothite ( FeO ( OH ) ) . Most of the cobalt and minor amounts of nickel are associated with a mixed manganese oxide (wad ) mineral .

"INTRODUCTION During the last war, considerable attention was given to the search for materials or combinations of materials for use as expelling agents for aerosols in the well-known ""aerosol bomb."" These materials must be free of fire and explosion hazards under normal conditions of use.In cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and other Federal agencies interested in the work, the Bureau of Mines carried out a laboratory investigation on the inflammability of- dimethyl ether-dichlorodifluoromethane air mixtures. 4/The method of investigation was essentially the same as that used in a similar investigation dealing with the inflammability of propane-butane-dichlorodifluoromethane mixtures. 4/SOURCE OF MATERIALSThe dichlorodifluoromethane (commonly known as freon-12) and the dimethyl ether were supplied by Dr. Lyle D. Goodhue., U. S. Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Md. It was reported that the freon-12 was manufactured by the Kinetic Chemical Co. Wilmington, Del., and the dimethyl ether by the Carbide & Carbon Chemicals Corp., Charleston, W. Va..The materials were obtained in small metal cylinders and were used as received. Before using, the cylinders mere placed in an upright position, and 5 to 6 liters of the gas was released from each cylinder to the atmosphere to remove any trapped air that may have been introduced when the cylinders were filled."

Electrolytic studies were conducted to determine the transfer rates of the alloying constituents from molten titanium anodes to solid titanium cathodes in molten salt systems . The metals , nickel , tin , copper , bismuth , and manganese , were selected on the basis of thermodynamic data and the melting point of the alloy system . The transfer of nickel , tin , and bismuth was very low . The content of these elements in the cathode was in the range of less than 0.01 to 0.001 percent . The copper transfer was 0.6 to 0.8 weight - percent in electrolytes containing titanium chlorides and 0.12 weight - percent in titanium fluoride salt systems . The manganese transferred at rates comparable to that of titanium . Highpurity titanium and titanium- manganese alloys of uniform composition were produced by electrorefining molten titanium alloys in chloride electrolytes . Comparisons are made between the calculated and the actual quantities of metal transfer .

As part of its work on converting coal to fluid fuels, the Federal Bureau of Mines has been studying the synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. A fluidized bed of nitrided, fused-iron catalyst has been operated successfully to produce high yields of oxygenated compounds. Trouble-free operation continued for over 800 hours, and the test was terminated voluntarily. About 85 percent of the fresh feed was converted when the unit was operated at a space velocity of 500 hr.-1, a 12:1 recycle-to-fresh-feed-gas ratio, a 300-p. s. i. g. pressure, and a temperature of 252° C. When operating at a fresh-feed-gas space velocity of 1,000 hr.-l and a 9:1 ratio of recycle to fresh gas, conversion of fresh feed was 68 percent, and the product yield was 235.9 grams per cubic meter of synthesis gas converted. The oxygenate and C5 and heavier hydrocarbon yield was 110.6 grams per cubic meter of gas converted, 83 percent of this was oxygenates. The atom ratio of N:Fe of the catalyst, initially 0.455, decreased to 0.288 by the end of the 800-hour experiment. Nevertheless, the yield of oxygenated compounds per cubic meter of H2 + CO converted at the end of the run was approximately the same as that obtained 500 hours earlier with identical operating conditions. X-ray analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only ?-iron carbonitride was present. Sieve analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only 2 percent of fines was produced during the reduction, nitriding, and synthesis.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines summarized injury data for independent contractor employees working at all locations of coal and metal-nonmetal mines from 1983 through 1990. During the eight years, the greatest contrast in degree of injury between independent contractor and operator employees was in fatalities. From 1983 through 1990, there were 132 independent contractor employee fatalities in the mining industry. In 1988 though, independent contractor employees accounted for nearly one-fourth of all mining fatalities. The fatality incidence rates of independent contractors were consistently higher than those of operators during the eight years. For instance, in 1990, the contractors' rate was twice that of operator employees in coalmining and nearly five times that of operators in metal-nonmetal mining. Three other salient facts highlight the independent contractor employees' fatality injury data during these years. First, 82% of the independent contractor employee fatalities occurred at surface locations. Second, two job classifications?truck driver and equipment operator?represented 37% of the fatalities throughout the 8-year period. And finally, four accident classifications?powered haulage, slips and falls, machinery, and electrical?accounted for 71% of all independent contractor employee fatalities.

Chemical processes using coal often require economical removal of dust from high-temperature gases. Laboratory-scale investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines have shown that an aluminum silicate fiber is suitable for filtering dust from gases at 1,800° F. The effects of the bulk density of the filter, rate of gas-flow, concentration of dust in the filter, fiber diameter, depth of filter, and concentration of dust in the feed gas on removal efficiency, pressure drop, and capacity of the filter to hold dust were studied. The laboratory filters were difficult to construct because the fibers were longer than the tube diameter. This caused irregular distribution of fiber that permitted dust-laden gases to leak through channels developed in the filter. Leaks also formed between the filter and the tube wall, but this was minimized by improved filter design. However, edge leaks and leaks through channels in the filter probably would be insignificant in properly constructed filters of industrial size. As the concentration of dust in the filter increased, the efficiency of the low-density filters decreased, contrary to expectations, probably because a higher percentage of the dust passed through channels that developed in the filter. The efficiency of high-density filters, however, increased with the concentration of dust in the filter. Results indicate that loosely packed filters would have a longer life than tightly packed filters at the expense of efficiency. As regeneration or replacement of stationary filters is difficult and expensive, loose filters would be best for filtering gases containing much dust. Gases containing little dust may be cleaned with tightly packed filters to obtain higher efficiency. For either type of filter, precleaning with cyclone separators or other means is advisable.

This report describes Bureau of Mines research to develop methods to evaluate loading on longwall roof supports to permit better design and more efficient utilization of these structures in compliance with the geological conditions in which they are employed. The resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy of a shield can be determined, either from a statically determinate solution assuming rigid-body mechanics and elimination of certain unknowns, or from an elastic solu-tion by analysis of the load-displacement relationship of the shield structure. A two-dimensional rigid-body model is presented that determines resultant shield forces by measurement of leg, canopy capsule, and lemniscate link forces. An elastic solution is presented, in the form of an elastic stiffness model with two degrees of freedom, which describes the load-displacement relationship from the stiffness of the shield structure as determined in the Bureau's Mine Roof Simulator (MRS). The ability of both models to determine resultant forces acting on the shield canopy are evaluated from full-scale tests in the MRS. More advanced numerical models are also discussed as part of the Bureau's continuing effort in the evaluation of roof support structures.

Under compuision of the present urgency to implement the President's promise to make the United States the arsenal for the democracies there is a tendency to demand a relaxation of restrictions on hours of labor and to speed up all industrial processes. The pressure is the more insistent with growing realization of the importance of the time factor in the success- ful prosecution of the war effort and the lack of skilled workers due to (2) operation of the draft, lack of an apprentice system in industry, and loss of skill by workers unemployed for long periods during the depression. With "total" war such as it is today the probabilities are that everyone will be required to exert greater effort (in many instances in activities to which they are unaccustomed) for longer periods than ever before has been necessary. The question arises, "What will be the aftereffects as well as the immediate effects on health, safety, and efficiency?" A review of the literature leaves the impression that this question has not been an- swered completely, especially as regards the ultimate effects. Mechanization, speeding up of industrial processes, mass produc- tion, and the small industrial concerns present many problems to indus- trial medicine. Does the tendency to expect the worker to produce at full speed all the time he is on the job decrease the effectiveness of the shorter working hours and cause undue fatigue, loss of efficiency, and increased accident proneness? The answer is important as this condition is likely to be intensified by the exigencies of the present emergency. According to Viteles (1)3, The increased tension under such conditions of work appears to offset the savings in muscular force made pos- sible by the machine. The tension, the speed, the subject- tion to specialization of work and a rhythm uncontrolled by the individual promote fatigue, characterized by a "decrease in the power to work, a decrease in pleasure taken in work, and a decrease in the enjoyment of the hours spent away from work."' The crowding of workers in temporary structures without proper provision for comfort and health may add greatly to the general fatigue factors already present in many industrial establishments. In 1932 Lockhart (2) stated that the production and maintenance of a healthy, satisfied industrial population is the most urgent necessity, involving problems so serious as to constitute a national task too great economically to be relegated to industrial concerns. If this was true in 1932, it must be doubly so today.

"INTRODUCTION Anyone who has had frequent occasion to compare methods of analysis and testing as employed in European countries with those used in the United States has felt the need of a table or graph giving the relationship between the units of measurement of finely powdered materials. Most of the few published comparisons include only two series of sieves and often require tedious interpolations to adapt the data of one series to the series more familiar to the reader. To eliminate such deficiencies, the author hopes that the discussion and comparison of fine-series sieve sizes presented here will conserve the time of interested research workers.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe author is deeply indebted to Virginia B. Solvig, senior chemist, for valuable suggestions in preparing the manuscript.SQUARE-MESH-SIEVE SERIES OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIESSieving analyses of powdered materials have been placed on a comparable basis in different countries by the introduction and adoption of standard sieve-scale series. Series of wire-cloth square-mesh sieves in common I oratory and industrial use include: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy standard laboratory screens (I.M.M.); British Standards Institution standard for fine-mesh test sieves (B.S. or B.S.I.); Tyler standard sereer-scale sieves; United States standard sieve series; Deutsche Industrial-Nermen (DIN); and the standard control sieves of the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR). With the exception of the I.M.M. series in which the opening is equal to the diameter of the wire, the general proportions of the various series of sieves are similar. The size of British and American sieves is designated by the number of meshes or openings per linear inch or, more recently, by the number of microns per linear sieve opening. In a technical sense the word ""mesh"" is meaningless, unless the diameter of the wire is also given, so that the size of the opening can be determined. On the Continent sieves are designated either by the nunber of Mesh per linear centimeter or by the number of openings per square centimeter."

Almost all minerals show irreversible changes in electrical conductivity after heating in the temperature range 100° to 800° C. This effect can be detected with only a limited number of minerals with the standard ionizing-electrode-type separator, which differentiates between nonconductors and conductors in the single-particle resistivity range of 1011 to 1013 ohms. Tests outside this range with other type separators, such as the static field type, increase the number of minerals with which the effect can be detected to almost all that were tested. Irreversibility may be the result of an alteration of adsorption layers, volatilization of surface cations or anions, or an oxidation or reduction. One example is limonite, which decomposes to hematite and passes through two minima and two maxima in conductivity in the temperature range 100° to 900° C.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. This report describes an investigation of the relationship between crater dimensions formed in laboratory blasting experiments and the mechanical properties of the material cratered. Scaled field data have been included when available. The results show that tensile strength and possibly other mechanical properties may be useful in predicting maximum crater dimensions.

In this final stage of a three-part investigation of the smelting of titania-bearing iron materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted semicontinuous smelting tests in a laboratory electric arc furnace on four concentrates and one are. The objective was to substantiate the significance of liquidus temperature measurements in predicting satisfactory slag compositions in electric furnace smelting of titaniferous magnetites to produce pig iron. Previously obtained liquidus temperature data were used in determining flux requirements. Self-fluxing pellets of either ore or concentrate plus fluxes and reductants were made to produce pig iron and slags containing 0.2 to 0.6 percent titanium. Individual constituents of the slags generally agreed within 5 percent with the value of the corresponding constituent of target composition. Liquidus temperature of furnace slags generally agreed within 50° C of the value obtained from corresponding nominal synthetic slag. The results of the three phases of the investigation may serve as guide-lines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetites and other titania and iron-bearing materials.

This report summarizes results of bench-scale metallurgical studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines on three composite samples representative of the low-grade manganese ores purchased by the General Services Administration (GSA) and stockpiled at Deming, N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. Bench-scale flotation tests at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center showed that all three composites could be beneficiated by flotation to recover 88 to 90 percent of the manganese in concentrates that assayed from 38.5 to 39.0 percent Mn, 10 to 12 percent insoluble, 5 percent CaO, 3 to 5 percent Fe, and 1.3 to 1.7 percent combined Pb plus Zn plus Cu, Sintering studies indicated that specification-grade material could be made from these concentrates by sintering above 1,000° C, and adding either sodium or calcium chloride to the charge to insure removal of enough lead and zinc to meet the specifications.

This research was conducted as part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines program to recover metals, glass, and a combustible fraction from municipal solid waste (MSW). The objective of this analytical study was to determine the concentration of antimony, arsenic, and mercury in samples taken from various sampling areas in the Bureau of Mines raw refuse recycling plant and to compare these values with those for coals used in the generation of electricity. To provide the necessary analytical data, sensitive reproducible ashing-chemical digestion-atomic absorption procedures were adapted from published procedures. It was determined that antimony and mercury concentrations in the combustible fraction of MSW are approximately an order of magnitude higher than those found in coals presently used for power generation;' the arsenic concentration is similar in both fuels.

Longwall mining in lower seam heights may necessitate the use of single-drum shearers to overcome size constraints associated with standard double-drum shearers. To avoid the operational problem of clearance in the tailgate entry with one single-drum shearer, two single-drum machines can be operated on the same face, with each shearer responsible for mining a predefined portion of the face. However, utilization of two shearers on the same face necessitates the positioning of one shearer operator and a jacksetter in the return air of the upwind shearer, thus complicating respirable dust control on the longwall. In an effort to evaluate the unique dust control problems associated with this type of mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted dust surveys on two multiple-machine longwall operations. Sampling was done to quantify major sources of respirable dust and to identify potential solutions to problem areas. Sampling results indicate that the cutting sequences utilized on multiple-machine faces may have to be designed to minimize dust exposure, as opposed to optimizing productivity or facilitating operational requirements. Also, state-of-the-art dust control techniques typically found on double-drum shearer longwalls must be employed to help minimize the exposure of all face personnel to traditional dust sources.
