This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale physical tests conducted on a steel-set arch and tri-set. The purpose of the analyses and tests was to evaluate the suitability of these structures for use in roof-fall prone areas. The arch canopy test and design procedures previously developed by the Bureau were utilized in this evaluation. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of the experimental behavior of the structures. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri-sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that these two structures may be considered for use in roof-fall prone areas and for rehabilitation work, provided the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

The United States coal mining industry has traditionally experienced difficulty in controlling dust levels below the occupational exposure limit. While improvements in face ventilation and water spray nozzles have decreased dust exposures, approximately eight percent of experienced coal miners are still developing Coal Worker?s Pneumoconiosis. This investigation tested the feasibility of enhancing existing engineering dust controls by mounting a simple barrier on a longwall shearer that separated the operators from the cutting drums. The barrier was constructed and tested above ground at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory longwall gallery test facility. A 96-percent reduction of respirable dust occurred at the headgate sampling position when tested at 2.4 m/sec (480 ft/min). The average dust level decreased from 39 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 by utilizing the barrier.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. [ ] AMSS Software Package NIOSH has developed a simple, user-friendly computer program called Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS). AMSS can help mine planners to evaluate each potential multiple-seam interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS begins by evaluating the pillar design. The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas con-tent of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and des orbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

[This is the eighth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The fir t report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report, covering 1,679 simples, represents the products of US companies plus those from the Pacific coast, witch were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and arc published exactly as they were submitted. The three groups of data on samples of regular, premium, and third-grade gasolines are averred separately. the, number of samples and brands representing each grade are as follows: Regular price, 869 samples, 76 brands; premium price, 452 sample, 45 brands; third-grade 358 samples, 52 brands. In this report the same marketing districts are retained as were used in the preceding report, and as for as possible the actual sampling points in each area are indicated on table 1.]

This is a report on work done and results obtained in a minerals exploration program conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the lead-zinc deposits in the Ross Basin-Lake Como district, San Juan County, Colo., in 1948, 1949, and 1950. Four large veins--the Seven Thirty, Red Rogers, Cashier-Shorts top-Canandaigua, and Queen Anne--and several narrow spur veins were explored at relatively shallow depths with core-drill holes. Thirty-nine holes, totaling 10,491.5 feet, were drilled, and the core samples were assayed at the Bureau of Mines station at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Asphalts from. Wyoming "black oils" are being studied at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Laramie, Wyo., in cooperation with the University of Wyoming. These black oils are characterized by their high-asphalt, high-sulphur, and low-gasoline content and are difficult to refine by present methods into high-octane motor fuels, burning oils, and lubricants. Accordingly, their principal use, at present, is for the manufacture of road oil and asphalt. The present production of black oil could be increased to meet a greater demand. During 1937 the daily production of these crude oils in Wyoming was slightly over 13,000 barrels, while, the estimated potential production from existing wells was 56,000 barrels.

In situ stresses, based on isotropic and anisotropic relations, were evaluated using computer techniques from overcoring data obtained in dimension stone quarries along the Appalachian Piedmont, the Ozark Uplift, and the Ouachita Tectonic Belt. Stresses in the horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and range from 100 to 4,500 psi. The direction of maximum compressive stress seems to be alined with the general tectonic structure for most of the determinations. The ratio of the maximum to minimum elastic parameters in the horizontal plane ranges from 1.05 to 2.46 for these competent rocks. Isotropic versus anisotropic stress determinations show differences only as great as 25 percent in stress magnitude and 25° in orientation.

[The Mining and Metallurgical Divisions of the Bureau of Mines, Region V, conducted an investigation in 1950-51 of the iron sulfide deposits in Aitkin and Carlton Counties, Minn. Twelve diamond-core-drill holes, aggregating 2,347 feet, were drilled in secs. 14 and 15, T. 46 N., R. 25 W., Aitkin County, to increase reserves of iron sulfides known to exist 2 miles southwest in secs. 28 and 29, T. 46 N., R. 25 W. Three diamond-core-drill hobs, totaling 561 feet, were drilled in Canton County, sec. 7, T. 46 N., R. 2 0 W., to check reports of the presence of a large sulfide deposit in that area. Mineral-dressing tests were made on cores from 10 holes drilled in Aitkin County. These included core from hole 21 drilled in sec. 28 and submitted by the Glen Development Co.]

In This Chapter [Instruments for measuring dust How to calculate the amount of dust from a source How to get a valid concentration measurement Sampling to assess control technology effectiveness] When there is more than one source of dust, sampling may be required to find which dust sources are most significant. Then, efforts to reduce dust can be concentrated where they will have the most impact. This chapter explains how to perform dust source sampling. It describes two kinds of instruments that are available and discusses their limitations. It explains how environmental variables such as concentration gradients, dust dilution, and production changes can impact dust measurements. It also suggests practical ways to improve the validity of dust source measurements under adverse conditions, such as high-velocity airflow or the presence of water mist in the air. [Dust source sampling at coal mine longwalls and at tunnels is more complicated. Chapters 3 and 7 have more information on sampling in those circumstances.] TWO KINDS OF INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING DUST Gravimetric samplers. The conventional gravimetric sampler is a good device for measuring dust because it is the instrument used for compliance measurements. This dust sampler consists of an air pump, a small cyclone that separates out the respirable size fraction of the dust cloud, and a filter to collect the respirable dust. In coal mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)-approved gravimetric sampler uses a 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone operating at an airflow of 2.0 L/min [30 CFR78 74 (2002)]. A correction factor of 1.38 is applied to make the results consistent with the U.K. MRE sampler, the instrument on which the 2.0 mg/m3 coal dust standard is based.

This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

To economically extract ore from great depths in the earth while sustaining an acceptable working environment will require the development of new technology and equipment, involving large capital expenditures. Moreover, careful analysis and advance planning will be required. But, the literature is lacking in data pertaining; to the thermal properties of various host rocks and to quantities of heat generated by various underground heat sources. This types, of data is required to forecast nine heat loads during advanced planning and design. This thesis sets forth a practical method for evaluating underground sources of heat in deep mines and provides an improved information base. Moreover, seven topics for further research are recommended. The heat sources considered are: wall-rock, ground water, adiabatic compression, equipment, service lines, blasting, metabolism, curing of cement, and oxidation of sulfides and timber. Seven deep metal mines with high production rates and high heat loads were visited to obtain data necessary to assess their thermal environments. Mine records were examined, wall-roc:, temperatures were measured and a survey of the mine ventilating air and mine drainage was performed. Also, the thermal conductivity of wet and dry specimens of the host rock were measured in the laboratory. Data analysis disclosed that rock heat and adiabatic compression account for stout 60 per cent of the mine heat load at depth. Equipment currently contributes approximately 20 per cent; however, to offset increasing costs with depth, increased mechanization is anticipated. The treat from ground water averages 19 per cent and the contribution from blasting, metabolism and cement is negligible. Also, approximately [0] per cent of the increase in the enthalpy of the ventilation air is in the form of latent heat. Moisture, however, did not significantly affect the thermal conductivity of the rock specimens measured in the laboratory. Also, from the data, it is evident that a negative correlation exists between the thermal conductivity of the host rocks and the per cent of the heat load derived from the wail-rock. Furthemore, steady state heat flow renditions may be assumed in airways where there has been no major changes in the ventilation system for a period of two years or more. Under these conditions, the author found it more convenient and reliable to compute heat influx using the steady state equation for heat flow into a cylinder, rather than Carrier's method for transient heat flow, which is so often used.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Pure respirable quartz is a known pathogenic agent for lung disease. However, for mixed dusts, neither mineralogical nor in vitro cytotoxicity assays unequivocally predict the contribution of quartz to their pathogenic potential.First, although Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) and Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF) prevalence have been found to correlate with total respirable coal mine dust exposure, and with coal rank (Attfield and Morring, 1992), epidemiological studies generally have not found the quartz component of coal mine dust as measured by X-ray diffraction or infrared spectroscopy (each of which essentially measures the mass-percent quartz in a bulk sample) to be clear predictors of CWP prevalence or incidence (Walton et al., 1971). Second, the properties which distinguish the extreme fibrogenic potential of quartz are not revealed by conventional in vitro bioassay comparison with other silicate mineral dusts. As an example, quartz and kaolin (aluminosilicate) clay in vitro cytotoxicities are comparable for lavaged primary pulmonary macrophages.The studies discussed here address these two anomalies from a general hypothesis that the pathogenic activity of respired quartz particles is associated with properties of, and interactions with, the particle surfaces. One factor in the expression of toxic activity by a particle surface is the biological availability of that surface. Anomalous lack of correlation of disease prevalence with mass percent quartz in exposures to some mixed composition respirable-sized dusts suggests that individual particle surface features, invisible by bulk sample mass analysis, may alter the biological availability of a fraction of quartz particles in a dust. For pure-surfaced mineral particles, the comparably strong prompt membranolytic activities of quartz and kaolin in vitro suggest that upon deposition of such particles in the lung there must be other interactions with particle surfaces which distinguish quartz. This might be due to toxic surface-associated sites specific to silica, or to interactions of other sites on other mineral particles which affect the biological availability of their toxic functional groups. For example, alurninol groups on clays affect the availability or activity of adjacent silanol groups. Surface activities which distinguish quartz pathogenici ty might be manifest in one or more of the sequential interactions upon deposition in the lung; first with the pulmonary surfactant system, then with extracellular and phagolysosomal enzymatic digestive processes, or with subsequent cytotoxic processes.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted joint research to evaluate explosion blast effects on mine ventilation stoppings at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). After mine explosion accidents, MSHA conducts investigations to determine the cause(s) as a means to mitigate or eliminate future occurrences. As part of these post-explosion investigations, the condition of underground stoppings, including the debris from damaged stoppings, are documented as evidence of the strength and the direction of the explosion forces. The LLEM data showed that a total pressure of 52 kPa (7.6 psi) destroyed the solid concrete block stopping, ~36 kPa (~5.2 psi) destroyed the hollow-core concrete block stopping, and 9 kPa (1.3 psi) destroyed the steel panel stopping. These results will assist investigators in determining the explosion forces that destroy or damage stoppings during actual coal mine explosions.

Ground support for metal, nonmetal, and coal mines was examined through fill placement with a pneumatic stower to increase extraction, reduce ground pressures, and improve general mine safety. Several pneumatically stowed stope-fill products were tested to determine the effects of specific gravity, gradation, moisture, and impact velocity on the in-place density of the stowed fill. Hydraulic sand filling has now served the mining industry for several decades but because of the low density does not always provide ample support to the hanging wall; therefore, the sill and crown pillars sometimes build up excessive stresses that are detrimental to mining. Cementation of a dense fill adjacent to a pillar to allow 100-pct extraction of the pillar, or a fill that can be placed without the use of water and where water is a detriment to rubber-tired mining equipment, was found to be a possible use of pneumatic fill. Placing of coal mine washery products into abandoned underground workings is another possibility in order to completely eliminate surface impoundments.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds from which samples could be obtained in Webster County, W. Va. In 1964, approximately 825,000 tons of coal was produced in the county, of which 732,000 tons was mechanically cleaned in three preparation plants. The Sewell coal bed accounted for 94 percent of the coal produced. Twelve samples were collected from five coalbeds. Four of the samples would require upgrading to meet metallurgical requirements; two others of just over 8.0 percent ash would require some upgrading. In general the coalbed samples collected in the county were of medium-sulfur and medium-to low-ash content as received or after removal of the sink 1.58-specific-gravity material.

This report describes recent improvements the Bureau of Mines made in the design of its shearer-clearer water-spray system for dust control on lonwgall shearer faces. The improvements were based on findings from a field survey of six mines and laboratory test results. The report in-cludes information on installation and use of the improved shearer-clearer system and describes a field installation and 3-week underground test of the system. The improved shearer clearer, like its predecessor, reduces dust concentrations in the shearer operator's walkway by splitting the airflow on the upwind side of the shearer and confining the dust cloud to the face side of the shearer. The improved shearer-clearer system utilizes more practical-mounting locations for the water sprays and requires less water consumption. In the underground test, the improved system maintained the clean-air split in the walkway up to 40 ft downstream from the shearer. To further improve dust suppression, cooling-water manifolds were relocated into the loading zone. The laboratory and underground tests showed that the improved shearer-clearer system and the techniques described can significantly reduce the respirable dust exposure of shearer operators from shearer-generated dust.
