"INTRODUCTION In the course of Bureau of Mines investigations of iron ores near Scappoose, Columbia County, Oreg. during 1942, occurrences of laterite were noted in road cuts and outcrops at many localities in the county. In 1944, the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries completed a preliminary examination of alumina-iron-bearing laterite occurrences in Washington County north of Hillsboro, Oreg.3/ Their report suggested that the lateritic material might be amenable to treatment by the Pederson process for the commercial production of iron and alumina. In order to determine the extent and character of some of the reported lateritic occurrences, the Bureau conducted preliminary explorations in Columbia County near St. Helens, Oreg., from January through June 1945. Almost simultaneously the Alcoa Mining Co. began to explore nearby areas. Their work was continued and expanded after the Bureau's work had been discontinued. This report presents the data obtained from the exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral re¬sources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Electrical conductivities and densities of the LiF- UF , LiF- ThF4 , NaF - C1F4 , and NaF - ThF systems were measured as functions of composition and temperature . The specific conductance and density varied linearly with temperature . Molar and equivalent volumes , as well as heats of activation for conductance , were calculated from the experimental data . At 1,000 ° C , the molar volumes ranged from 16 to 40 cubic centimeters per mole and the specific conductance ranged from 9.8 to 2.5 per ohm- centimeter as the actinide metal fluoride concentration changed from 0 to 60 mole - percent . Heats of activation for conductance were 3 to 7 kcal per mole . The data are interpreted on the basis of a semilattice model for the melts .

The Spokane Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines is placing major emphasis on chemical stabilization as part of the ground support program. Development of polymeric material suitable for bonding rock fractures around the mine opening is one phase of the program. Some of the problems that must be considered are viscosity, applicability, adhesion, cure times, strength, toxicity, and flammability. Epoxies and polyesters were investigated, but shrinkage in polyesters caused redirected effort toward epoxies. Test results with the latter showed that bonded fractures in mine-roof strata were stronger than the virgin rock. Further tests showed that polymeric materials have good potential for bonding, and in conjunction with polymer roof bolts, are expected to result in an economic and useful new support concept.

The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

"SUMMARYA method has been developed for surveying, drill holes without lowering into the hole any surveying equipment other than an etch tube. The orientation of the rods at the collar of the hole is maintained as the etch tube is lowered. The attitude of the etch ellipse in depth with respect to the rod orientation at the collar can then be observed. This relationship permits the bearing of the hole in depth to he calculated. The rod orientation is maintained during the lowering by means of a pair of alinement clamps. One clamp is fastened to the top of each rod as the rod is coupled and is removed when the alinement has been transferred to the other clamp at the top of the next succeeding rod. A particular advantage of this survey technique is that surveys can be readily made in magnetic country rock.PRINCIPLE OF THE TECHNIQUEAn axial lamina of the column of drill roes is the lamina in which one fiber would be the centerline of the rods. In the new survey technique, the rods are fed into the hole in such a manner that the axial lamina of each successive rod maintains its position at the collar of the hole. In depth, as the rods bend in following the drill hole, the axial laminae also bend. The lamina that was originally vertical will, in general, be tilted away from the vertical. The trace of this lamina is marked on the glass etch tube before the tube is lowered in the hole. The axial lamina that becomes vertical at the survey station is recognized as that axial lamina which contains the long axis of the etch ellipse. The angle between the lamina originally vertical and the lamina vertical at the survey station is thus measurable. When the vertical axial lamina at one survey station has been determined by the etch ellipse at that station, angle R between this lamina and the vertical axial lamina at the next survey station becomes measurable also. By moans of angle R, and dip angles D1 and D2 at the two stations, the change in bearing (z) of the drill hole between the two stations can be calculated."

The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Cater, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvanian age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Arizona, Sandia National Laboratories, and Zonge Engineering and Research Organization, Inc., conducted cooperative field tests of six electromagnetic (EM) geophysical methods to compare their effectiveness in locating a brine solution simulating in situ leach solution or a high-conductivity plume of contamination. The brine was approximately 160 m below the surface. The testsite was the University's San Xavier experimental mine near Tucson, AZ. Geo- physical surveys using surface and surface-borehole, time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) induction; surface controlled-source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT); surface-borehole, frequency- domain electromagnetic (FEM) induction; crosshole FEM; and surface magnetic field ellipticity were conducted before and during brine injection. The surface TEM data showed a broad decrease in resistivity. CSAMT measurements with the conventional orientation did not detect the brine, but measurements with another orientation indicated some decrease in resistivity. The surface-borehole and crosshole methods located a known fracture and other fracture zones inferred from borehole induction logs. Surface magnetic field ellipticity data showed a broad decrease in resistivity at depth following brine injection.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions~ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

A series of linear programmed instruction modules was developed in the general subject areas of Blasting Technology & Explosives Safety & Electrical Training. The linear programs (modules) were developed in the form of tape-slide plus workbook materials, while the branching format evolved from the LTS teaching machine system from MIT, through several other teaching machines and micro-computers, finally settling on Radio Shack TRS-80 microcomputers, Models I & III. Initial validation figures indicate that essentially the same result, are attained from both methods (based on pre and post test scores), with the most noticeable difference being an approximately 25% savings in study time with the branching modules. In December 1980, the development of modules on High-Voltage Training, Trolley Wireman Training, and Compressed Gas Safety was added to the overall tasks of the contract.

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Since its creation in 1910, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines has pioneered in the development of mineral technology, through research. From the very beginning, research on mine health and safety has been a dominating concern, and a responsibility that expanded markedly as a result of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Until the mid-1970's research on fuel technology and coal production also was an important part of the Bureau's work. But in the four years following the 1973 oil crisis, Congress established a reorganized Federal energy research apparatus in which all fossil fuel research-encompassing extraction, use, and conservation-was centralized. Today, the Department of Energy houses Federal research on coal mine production technology, while research on coal and noncoal mine health and safety and environmental technology, and on noncoal mine production technology, remains in the Interior Department as a continuing responsibility of the Bureau of Mines. Diamond, drilling of some blast holes in stoning operations is practised in at least two iron mines in the Lake Superior district - the Soudan mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co., on the Vermilion range at Soudan, Minn., and the Anvil-Palms mine, operated by Pickands, Bather & Co., on the Gogebic range at Bessemer, Mich. Diamond drilling, at the Soudan nine has partly replaced percussion drilling because of the extreme hardness of the ore and of the lean formation. According to Wolff,4/ the jasper or lean formation in this mine is the hardest rock regularly drilled in any commercial operation.

The purpose of the investigation was to describe and appraise tungsten deposits in Montana . The work supplements previous investigations made by Pattee ( 10 ) and Walker ( 17 ) in selected areas of the State . Scheelite deposits in tactite are the most numerous and most important economically , having accounted for nearly all of the State's tungsten production . Of the 64 deposits examined during the current study , 50 contained scheelite , 11 hubnerite , 2 wolframite , and 1 ferberite . The State's major tungsten production has been from scheelite deposits in Beaverhead County . The report lists , by counties , the type and grade of each deposit . The more important occurrences are accompanied by geological and assay maps .

[The growing importance of the Sundance (Jurassic) formation as a source of oil in the Rocky Mountain area has prompted the making off a series of porosity determinations of core samples collected from the reservoir sands of the Lance Creek oil field, Niobrara County, Wyo. These analyses are preliminary to a study of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas.]

Dilation and contraction of the rock surrounding horizontal access open-ings of a deep mine were analyzed during stope advance to determine what type of measurements, made with relatively inexpensive instrumentation, would best reflect the rock behavior. A variety of instruments, mostly mechanical extensometers, were used. Detailed descriptions are given of Down-the-hole extensometers, floating rockbolt clusters, transit surveys, and other instruments and measuring techniques. Although all of the radial-deformation-rate graphs illustrated useful rock behavior data, the most informative graphs were compiled from data procured with the radial extensometers that penetrated, to various depths, the rock around the access openings. An analysis is given of measurement data on the rock around lateral drifts and across and adjacent to the nearly vertical vein of the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. Several useful relationships were found between the rock deformation rate and the stoping process. Information was produced on the elastic state of rock around an underground opening, effectiveness of stope support, rheology of rock, zone of influence around stopes, effectiveness of rockbolts, axis of maximum strain in a plane perpendicular to the long axis of the lateral, and other phenomena. This information could be of particular value in determining location, design, and support of underground openings.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

Injury experience at metal mines and mills (excluding officeworkers) in 1964 was 60 fatal and 3,672 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 149 million man-hours worked. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 24.57 per million man-hours and had a severity rate of 3,687 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Employment at 2,363 metal mines and 291 mills, excluding officeworkers, was 68,140 men in 1964. The average number of days worked was 274 The principal cause of fatal injuries at all mines and mills was haulage accidents and in underground mines, only, was falls of ground. The principal cause of nonfatal injuries was handling material accidents. The frequency rate at metal mines and mills in 1964 was slightly below that of 1963, whereas the severity rate was higher. Injury experience at 94 primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants (excluding officeworkers) was 8 fatal and 999 nonfatal disabling work injuries during a worktime of 98 million man-hours worked. The combined injury-frequency rate in 1964 was 10.29 and the injury-severity rate was 1,005. The 36,956 employees worked an average of 329 days during 1964. The principal cause of injuries at these plants was handling material accidents.

A comprehensive production research program, now in progress at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., includes studies of the displacement of petroleum from sand by detergent solutions. An earlier report (12)2/ presented the results of an extensive research program to determine the value of detergents as floodwater additives. This report presents later results of the detergent-testing program (13, 17). Although water-flooding methods and controls are constantly being improved to increase the production of oil from secondary-recovery operations, considerable crude oil commonly remains.in place after a water flood has been terminated. Therefore, the possibility of improving the efficiency of a waterflood by the use of detergents is of increasing interest. The effects of many substances on the efficiency of water flooding have been investigated in laboratory studies (5, 11, 13, 17, 19, 24). Of the various sub-stances tested, only surface-active agents were consistently effective in removing oil from sand. Results of laboratory studies presented in earlier reports (9, 11, 12, 13) show that many detergent solutions effectively displace petroleum from sand surfaces under varying conditions encountered in centrifuging, manual and mechanical agitation, ultrasonic vibration, and imbibition.

Their purpose is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods and practices at various United States mines. The exploration, development, equipment, and mining of a large, oxidized-copper ore deposit by open-pit methods, the leaching of the ore with sulfuric acid solution, and the recovery of the copper as cement copper are described herein.
