The United States Bureau of lanes, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the problem of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. Numerous data on gas flow through pipe lines under many conditions of operation have been obtained by carefully conducted tests, and these data, together with all other available information, have been analyzed Carefully to secure practical facts for the use of operators in designing pipe lines and determining the effects of different operating conditions on pipe-line capacities. The first procedure in initiating this problem was to review, compile, and analyze all of the existing data on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines. Actual data applicable to pipe and operating conditions normally used in the transmission of natural gas were meager, and the several pipe line flow formulas developed by different investigators gave widely varying results when applied to problems of pipe-line design. Therefore, further experimental work under conditions comparable to those found in transmitting natural gas was essential before any definite recommendations could be made. The problem, as originally planned, included flow tests on pipe lines in operation, and in each test the measured delivery vas to be compared with the delivery calculated from several common pipe line flow formulas.

The Bureau of Mines made time-dependent calculations to determine the size of a stationary source fire within a ventilated duct (or passage-way) necessary to ignite a combustible duct liner. The objective of this work was to gain more understanding of what occurs in duct fires and to determine critical conditions for ignition and propagation of mine fires. Heat transfer to the combustible surface includes both convective and radiated components, while the heat is conducted into the combustible and reradiated to the surroundings. The combustible is assumed to ignite when the net heat transfer to its surface is sufficient to raise the surface temperature to some minimum temperature, defined as the ignition temperature. A nondimensional parameter, which characterizes the source-fire intensity in the presence of ventilation flow, emerges as a parameter for a criterion of the critical conditions. The results of these calculations indicated that the minimum fire size necessary for ignition increases with the ventilation rate and duct cross section. These results are compared with experimental results obtained from fires in a 0.8-by 0.8-by Il-m-long duct and a full-scale gallery (2.4-by 2.4-by 65-m). Agreement between the theory and the experiment is good.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

Leonardite is a coallike substance, similar in structure and composition to lignitic coal and believed to be derived from lignitic coal by the process of natural oxidation. Leonardite is little known outside lignite-producing areas and has been developed commercially only to a minor extent. The higher oxygen content and less compact structure of leonardite, compared with lignite, make it undesirable as a fuel but indicate that it has potential as a source of chemicals and for other nonfuel uses. It is a convenient source of humic acids. The United States has a large natural reserve of leonardite; furthermore, it can be produced in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The significant elemental difference between leonardite and lignite is the oxygen content (leonardite, 28-29 percent; lignite, 19-20 percent). The higher oxygen content of leonardite is due entirely to a Larger number of carboxylic acid groups. This fact explains the 17-Cold increase in alkali solubility of leonardite. Spectral studies indicate that the material is mixed salts of humic acids.

Mine safety personnel reported occurrences of excessive "glove-fingering" and other problems with resin-grouted roof bolt installa tions. To study these problems, the Bureau of Mines designed a test plan to (1) obtain baseline information on several resin cartridges and (2) investigate the variables involved in the installation of a resin bolt. Three brands of resin representative of the industry in January 1983 were selected for cartridge evaluation. The installation variables selected for study were the method of installation, the hole depth, and the hole annulus. These variables were studied by installing a series of bolts in concrete blocks using different values for each variable. Results of the research show overspinning the resin may cause problems, but they can be avoided by using the spin times recommended by manufac-turers. Excessive glove-fingering is not a problem if the manufacturer-recommended installation procedures are followed.

[Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has promoted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believe would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units. The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendations are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many ether problems will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the cost earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.]

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resource potential of 201 mines and deposits in 28 market economy countries and 17 mines and deposits in the U.S.S.R. and China. The 201 mines and deposits evaluated from market economy countries contain an estimated 34.2 billion metric tons of recoverable phosphate rock (at the demonstrated resource level), with Morocco and Western Sahara accounting for 61% (21 billion tons), followed by the United States with 19% (6.4 billion tons). The 17 mines and deposits evaluated in the U.S.S.R. and China contain approximately 1.5 billion tons of potentially recoverable phosphate rock. Potential annual capacity from low-cost, high-grade producing mines in the United States is estimated to decline significantly during the latter half of the next decade, and the United States will have to develop new, higher cost, lower grade mines in order to satisfy demand into the next century. Of the world's new production capacity which could likely be developed over the next decade, slightly over one-third could be produced at an estimated 1981 cost of $40 per ton or less, and about two-thirds would cost in the $40 to $50 range (including a 15% rate of return). In comparison, moot of the competing phosphate rock from producing mines in Morocco could be produced for under $40 per ton. The United States has sufficient demonstrated resources of phosphate rock (plus huge quantities at the identified and hypothetical resource levels) to satisfy domestic consumption for many years to come, but its future ability to compete in the major export markets against low-cost competitors is much more uncertain.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing quarrying methods and costs at stone quarries throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scrope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. RECORD production of marble, kaolin, scrap mica, and talc high-lighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1962. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in scrap mica, third in the production of bauxite and native asphalt, and fifth in iron ore. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by mining and processing of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cement, which together comprised 73 percent of the total value of production, compared with 72 percent in 1961. Other important industries were the production of crude petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron, Southern Cement Co., Southeastern Electric Generating Co., Alabama By-Products Corp., and U.S. Pipe & Foundry Co.

"SUMMARYA chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost has been compiled. Many accidents were described in more detail because of their unusual features. Tables have been included to indicate the number of major disasters and fatalities by the principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals prior to 1945. The number of men employed to indicate man-hours exposed is unavailable; therefore, a true picture of disaster data by principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals is not possible. However, the data are presented to indicate the causes of major accidents and bring to the attention of those affiliated with metal and nonmetal mines and quarries the hazards involved and lessons that can be practiced to keep such accidents at a minimum.INTRODUCTIONThe Bureau of Mines was requested to compile a chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost. Data have been assembled on accidents from all causes in these mines and quarries from the earliest available information (describ¬ing an underground mine fire in Nevada in 1869) to the last reported major accident (a fire at a company-owned bunkhouse in Arizona in 1945).The accounts of the accidents were taken from articles in the technical press and from published and unpublished reports of the Bureau of Mines. Many of the accidents have been selected for more detailed descriptions because of the unique circumstances and to show the variety of dangers involved.Tables are included to indicate the number of major accidents, with resultant fatalities, by the principal metal and nonmetal producing groups, by State, and by 10-year intervals previous to 1945. This publication contains four papers presented at a seminar on mine subsidence control held in Pittsburgh, PA, on September 19, 1985. The seminar was designed to keep the mineral industry informed of new technology developed by the Bureau of Mines that permits reliable and accurate prediction of mine subsidence. The papers describe actual field studies undertaken by the Bureau to monitor surface subsidence over longwall panels. Topics discussed include the efects of subsidence on water table levels, the development of subsidence pre calculation methodology suitable for use with the specific lithological conditions of the Pittsburgh coalbed, an engineering comparison of technologies used in surveying for longwall mine subsidence, and a comparison of the process of subsidence over two different longwall panels.

In studies made by the United States Bureau of Mines to determine the causes of explosions in medium-pressure acetylene generators , it was shown that when these are operated at elevated temperatures the acetylene liberated in an acetylene generator carries enough water vapor to heat certain types of carbides to a high temperature , when the acetylene- water vapor mixtures are passed through the carbide . This report contains results of further work carried out to develop an apparatus to show the heating effects or reactivity of various types of carbides in contact with acetylene - water vapor mixtures .

"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

In mining coal in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania the general custom has been to leave a large percentage of the coal in place as pillars to support the roof. Evidently any practice that involves partial waste of an important mineral resource is bound to be discarded. It is well recognized that one method of obviating probable waste is to fill the workings with cheap or worthless materials, a process extensively employed in the anthracite and some European mines. At present many of the collieries in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania are utilizing refuse from the old culm banks, which formerly were prominent features in the landscape, and are flushing the fine waste underground so that pillars may be reduced in size or removed. As a result the banks are now disappearing and soon will be gone. The fine culm from the breakers and rock from the mines will continue to be available, but the volume of these materials is insufficient to replace any considerable proportion of the coal removed. The next stage of progress suggested is the use of sand. Fortunately there are available large deposits of this material, much of which can be handled by dredges and pumps. This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods. I ts purpose is to describe the sand deposits in the northern anthracite coal field in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties, Pa, Much of the information available is presented in the map, Plate I. Field studies, mostly preliminary, were made in the summer of 1911 to determine the distribution, amount, and character of the larger deposits. It was not thought desirable to make a detailed examination of the region because when the coal companies decide to utilize the sand their engineers will make precise surveys and drill test holes. In preparing the map the various coal companies were consulted; they contributed a large number of facts, especially as to the deposits in the buried valley of the Susquehanna between Pittston and Nan- ticoke, where nearly 1,000 test holes have been bored. The results of these borings were placed at the author's disposal, and have been utilized in drawing the boundaries given in the wide valley area and its extensions up Lackawanna River and NewportCreek. Wyoming Valley contains deposits of sand that are 100 feet thick over a wide area, 200 feet thick in places, and over 300 feet thick in the deep old channel south of Plymouth.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.
