This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations made by the Bureau c! Mines on the recovery of mercury from caustic sulfide solutions by aluminum precipitation and by electrodeposition. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Precipitation studies demonstrated tint metallic mercury could be recovered from mercury sulfide-sodium sulfide solutions with aluminum. Other metals and their salts and aluminum, salts precipitated only black mercury sulfide. Over 95 percent of the mercury was precipitated from solutions prepared with reagent-grade chemicals and from cinnabar leach solutions. Two equivalents of aluminum were required to obtain 95 percent precipitation of the mercury. Under optimum conditions 1 gram of aluminum precipitated from 4 to 7 grams of mercury; the excess Aluminum was recovered for reuse. The effects of time and temperature on the precipitation of mercury were minor when compared with the effects of mercury concentration and aluminum equivalents. The particle size of aluminum had no significant effect over the ranges studied. When aluminum was used as a precipitant, the mercury concentration in solution was reduced to below 1.0 grams per liter. Adding arsenic and antimony sulfides to the mercury solution resulted in their coprecipitation with the mercury when the aluminum was added From 95 to 99 percent of both the arsenic and antimony were precipitated as metal, which amalgamated with the mercury.

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. This report summarizes a study conducted by The Service Bureau Corporation for the Bureau of Mines. Evaluations reflected herein are the result of an independent investigation by The Service Bureau Corporation of methane considerations during coal mining. The study is oriented toward a systematic analysis of methane control problems during coal mining. Throughout this study an attempt has been made to ensure considerations consistent with the recently enacted Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. References to reports by The Bureau of Mines and others are made for the purposes of establishing identification between the evaluations contained in this report and on-going research efforts.

Records show that waterflooding was tried in Osage County as early as 1934, but it was not economically important until a large unitized flood in the North Burbank field was begun in 1950. Development was rapid and by the end of 1960, there were 70 active water flood projects and 16 active pressure-maintenance projects in the County. The locations and status of the water-flood and pressure-maintenance projects in Osage County on December 31, 1960 are shown in figure 1, and information pertaining to these projects as of July 1, 1960 is given in table 1. For the past several years, Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers have arranged tours of selected waterflooding projects for the spring meeting of the Kansas-Oklahoma Water flood Association. These tours are conducted to demonstrate unique operating methods and new field equipment and to provide additional opportunities for exchanging information. Each of these tours has been supplemented by a published report describing in detail the projects visited. This report has been prepared for distribution during the 1961 spring tour of three waterflooding projects and a pressure-maintenance project in Osage County, Okla. (fig. 2).

In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

A mineral survey of a portion of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area (No. 5807), Trinity County, California, was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Approximately 8,650 acres (3,500 ha) of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area not examined for this report had been previously investigated by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey personnel and published as part of USGS Bulletin 1371-B, (Hotz, 1972) Mineral Resources of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area, California. The report showed that the section included in the rake Eleanor RARE II area contained no metallic mineral resources. Geochemical sampling indicated that the Lake Eleanor RARE II area contains no potentially important mineral resources. About 4,650 acres (1,880 ha) of the eastern part of Lake Eleanor RARE II area were examined for this report. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination and sampling of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. This area is underlain mainly by granitic rock and serpentinite.

As a result of early experiments in underground mine illumination, the Bureau of Hines recognized the need for additional experience with the underground lighting of coal mines having low seam thicknesses. There was already experience with tile illumination of coal mines having higher coal seams, and this contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) was undertaken to contribute to the "low coal" experience. For the purpose of this contract, a "low coal? mine is defined as one having less than 45 inches of overall headroom in the working places. As a practical limit, 26 inches was the minimum coal seam thickness to be encountered in this program. In one instance, the maximum coal seam thickness was eight to ten feet, however, this particular work was at the direction of the Technical Project Officer (TPO) by virtue of the unique type of lighting arrangement that was to be evaluated which would be useful for low coal. At the outset of the contract, three major tasks were established. The first two tasks involved the installation of permissible fluorescent lighting equipment at two low coal mines. The intention was to illuminate mining sections in each case consisting of one or more machines. The third task was to illuminate a variety or mining equipment including a longwall. For the purpose of this report, the fol-owing identifies the particular installations associated with each task.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. Injury experience in the coal-mining industry was worse in 1965 as both the frequency and severity rates of injuries increased 2 and 6 percent, respectively, over comparable data for 1966 (tables 1-8). The retrogression in the safety record during; 1965 resulted frog the less favorable record at bituminous-coal mines, which more than offset the improved injury experience at anthracite mines. The 259 fatal and 11,138 nonfatal injuries occurred at a rate of 45.77 per million man-hours of exposure and resulted in a severity rate of 8,960 days lost per million man-hours. Although the number of fatalities was the second lowest annual total in the recorded history, it was 17 higher than in 1964. At anthracite operations the total of 6 fatalities in 1965 was the lowest annual figure in statistical history. The annual numbers of nonfatal injuries at ill coal mines and the resulting rates of occurrence have varied little in the past 5 years (table 1). The total days lost from all injuries rose from 2.1.3 million in 19b4 to 2.23 million in 1965 (table 5). Fatal and permanent total injuries, with a standard time charge of 6,000 days each, accounted for 1,650,000 days; Permanent partial injuries, 191,932 clays; and temporary total disabilities, 383,911 days. The severity rate for fatal injuries was 6,241, 8 percent higher than in 1964, and the nonfatal severity rate of 2,718 days lost per million man-hours was 2 percent higher than in the preceding year. The average severity of permanent partial injuries ire; 730, or 48 days fewer per injury than in 1964. The average days lost for each temporary total injury was 36 days in each year.

Illumination plays a critical role in an underground miner?s safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to recognize hazards. Mobile mining machinery, located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view (±10° to about ±60° off-axis), may pose potential pinning and striking hazards. The main objective of this research was to determine if there were peripheral visual performance improvements for the detection of moving objects when using cool-white light-emitting diode (LED) cap lamps as compared to incandescent (INC) light bulbs commonly used in miner cap lamps. The cap lamp variable of interest is the spectral power distribution (SPD); the illuminances were normalized by a diffusion filter. The second objective was to determine if age is a factor for peripheral visual performance. This is important because the workforce is aging ? the average miner age is about 43 years old. Thirty subjects participated in the study; ten subjects each in the age groups of younger (18 to 25 years), middle (40 to 50 years), and older (50+ years). Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy of response to detect the rotation of high-contrast (white) circular targets located 3.83 meters (m) away at -20°, 40°, and 50° off-axis. The speed of detection and the number of missed target rotations (accuracy) were measured. The prototype LED cap lamp results were best with a 11% to 15% improvement compared to the INC and LED cap lamps respectively. Age does appear to be a significant factor. For the middle and older age groups?, target movement detection time increased 75% and 60% and the number of missed targets increased 500% and 450% respectively in comparison to the youngest age group. The results also suggest that target location is a significant factor. The subjects? target movement detection time for the 40° and 50° target movements increased 16% and 69% respectively as compared to the -20° target.

This report describes the program that studied the theoretical and practical aspects of the belt cleaning systems, investigated-the possibilities of a self-replacing and/or sell-adjusting belt cleaning device, and designed a horizonal pentagonal turret setup for the underground mine belt conveyors. This design resulted from comprehensive literature survey (both academic and commercial), actual mine visits, study of the mechanics of belt cleaning and bench-type experiments. It has complete working drawings and rough cost estimates.

Control of the dust produced by continuous mining machines in coal mines is generally obtained by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine in back of the cutting head. Mounting the nozzles on the rotating head of the machine closer to the coal cutting bits may improve the efficiency of dust suppression. To test this concept, respirable dust measurements were made during 39 regular production shifts in an underground mine using a Joy 11CM continuous miner. The equipment used, difficulties encountered, and measurements obtained are described.

This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

The report recommends criteria for the design of safe surface mine haulage roads. Information relevant to road design at surface mine sites delineates vertical and horizontal alignment; subbase and surface materials; drainage; cross-slope, superelevation; runaway vehicle protection; and road and vehicle maintenance criteria. An appendix Is included which details the study methods used in compiling the final report information. A bibliography following the main text lists literature referenced for the report data and which is available as a valuable tool for use by individuals involved in haul road design.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated to image the stress redistribution around an underground coal longwall panel to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to ground failure, especially rockbursts. Mining-induced microseismic events provided passive sources for the three-dimensional velocity tomography. Surface-mounted geophones monitored microseismic activity for 18 days. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated with high abutment stresses predicted by numerical modeling. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated, indicating that velocity tomography may be an appropriate technology for monitoring stress redistribution in underground mines.

In relation to dust, there are three categories of continuous miner faces depending on the type of ventilation and whether or not a machine-mounted dust scrubber is used. These are— 1. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with blowing face ventilation 2. Mining machines with dust scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation 3. Mining machines without scrubbers used with exhaust face ventilation The approach to dust control is somewhat different in all three of these. However, there are many dust control features (such as the need to provide adequate airflow) common to all continuous miner sections. For workers at roof bolter faces, there are two dust sources: 1. Dust from the continuous miner when it is upwind. 2. A malfunctioning dust collector on the bolter, which allows dust to escape DESIGN AND OPERATION OF MACHINE-MOUNTED SCRUBBERS [Almost all new continuous miners are equipped with scrubbers. When the dust is excessive, it is possible that the scrubber needs some maintenance.]

The objective of this handbook is to provide the inspector with guidance for recognizing hazards from inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas of underground and surface coal mining and processing facilities and evaluating these hazards by collecting samples or making field determinations and interpreting the analytical results. This report describes the design and testing of an improved quiet hard rock percussion drill. The improved drill incorporates a tappetless design with independent rotation in a hand held drill weighing 50 lbm. Laboratory and field testing in three mines were conducted. The testing showed improved drilling performance with no increase in measured noise levels over the fist design.
