For many years, studies of ground movement and subsidence accompanying subsurface mining operations have been part of the research program of the Bureau of Mines. Periodic observations by engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau of man-built structures beneath which mining operations are conducted offer indisputable evidence of subsidence in the form of creeks in masonry structures and fractures and depressions in tie surface of the earth. As the removal of subsurface rock and earth material by mining, especially by the room-and-pillar method, is equivalent to withdrawing some of the foundation of a building, subsidence of the formations above, the mining levels in certain air-as is easily understood as a gravitational adjustment of the overlying earth formations.

Batches of red or brown iron ore concentrates, weighing 100 or 200 grams, were reduced with gaseous reductants in a laboratory-sized fluidized-bed reactor. Using a loss of weight technique, the rates of reduction were measured and the effects of temperature, gas consumption, and gas flow rates were determined. Below about 725° C the rate of reduction was controlled by the chemical reaction at the reduction interface having an activation energy of about 10 kcal/g mole. Above about 725° C the rate of reduction appeared to be controlled by the flow of the gaseous reductant and therefore to be directly proportional to the flow rate. Above 725° C, hydrogen reduced the iron ore much faster than carbon monoxide. In gas mixtures, carbon monoxide or nitrogen reduced the hydrogen partial pressure and lowered the reaction rate proportionally. When present in large concentrations, carbon monoxide had a serious inhibiting effect on the reduction rate, probably owing to carburization and sintering of the reduced iron.

Volume II of the final report concerns the application of sensitive ground-fault interrupters (GFIs) to ac utilization circuits in U.S. mines The main concepts examined are shock prevention and methods for reducing nuisance tripping. The research involved a literature search, input from previous Bureau of Mines contracts, and contacts with electrical manufac-turers and mining personnel. Following this background work, several devices that showed promise were obtained and tested. Results of testing indicate the existence of GFIs that may be modified to perform adequately on U.S. mining systems. A recommended set of guidelines is included in the report, covering design, construction specifications, and performance tests.

The problems associated with the presence of organic materials and of water in explosion-proof enclosures used in high voltage, high capacity applications were examined through a literature search and theoretical reasoning. Information on volatilities is presented. The conclusion is reached that explosive pressures are significantly enhanced by inclusion of these materials.

In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

This report presents the results of a Bureau of Mines laboratory investigation of the effect of water sprays in reducing respirable dust that escaped the face area of a full-scale wooden model of a mine en-try containing a wooden model of a ripper-type continuous mining machine and exhaust brattice. Areas examined were (a) the general effectiveness of a low-pressure water spray system mounted on top of the mining machine boom, a high-pressure spray system mounted under the boom, and the combined top-and bottom-spray systems, and (b) the effect of these three spray systems on the capture of coal dust particles of different sizes. Dust was injected into a sump cavity at the face. Airborne respirable dust concentration was mea-sured behind the brattice with a personal sampler and cyclone, and particle size distribution was mea-sured with a cascade impactor. When used alone, the top-spray system captured about 55 pct of the respirable dust in the face area and the bottom-spray system captured 60 pct; the capture efficiency of each system is decreased when they are used simultaneously. From a mass-concentration viewpoint, each spray system preferentially captures larger dust particles.

"IntroductionIn the course of an investigation on the influence of black damp (a mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide) on the limits of inflammability of fire damp (methane) in air, some new information was obtained concerning the factors that determine whether or not a gas mixture is capable of self-propagation of flame. Volume for volume, carbon dioxide exceeds nitrogen in its extinctive action on flame, an effect which is generally attributed to the higher molecular heat capacity of the former. Argon, a as of lesser heat capacity than either, proved to Lave less extinctive notion. If, as seemed likely, the extinctive action of a chemically inert gas could be attributed entirely to its heat capacity, then helium should behave like argon; equal volumes of these two oases should exhibit equal extinctive action, for their molecular heat capacities are nearly identical at laboratory temperatures and, in all probability, remain constant up to and beyond flame temperatures. The experiments reported here show, however, that helium has proved to be more extinctive of methane flames than argon.Method Used in ExperimentsThe limits of inflammability of methane, in various ""atmospheres"" composed of mixture of air with one or other of the diluent were determined in a vertical glass tube, 6 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. The lower end of the tube was opened by sliding away a ground-glass joint and the flame of a small spirit lamp was immediately passed across the aperture. The tube was sufficiently long to enable observers to judge whether a flame was self-propagation for if a mixture were incapable of continued self-propagation pf flame, the lamp of flame formel above the source of ignition was extinguished within feet of its passage up the tube."

The value of U.S. mineral raw material output reached a record $63.1 billion in 1975. This high exceeded the 1974 value of $55.2 billion by 14 percent. Among the three major mineral categories -fuels, metals, and nonmetals -only fuels showed an increase in value. Both the metal and nonmetal categories showed declines in value. The significance of this nearly $63 billion mineral output can be noted in the fact that it is the basis for the subsequent production of over $270 billion a year in energy and processed materials. Of the 78 individual mineral commodities included in these 1975 totals, only 17 registered gains in output, while 45 registered value increases, reflecting higher prices.

Disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas is a continually increasing problem. The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. Dusts can be filtered out of air streams onto polymer surfaces by electrostatic trapping resulting from the spontaneous transfer of electrons upon contact between dust particles and the polymer surfaces. Such spontaneous contact electrification has been studied quantitatively in this contract with the aid of modern semiconductor charge-sensors with the aim of determining what basic principles govern the sign and magnitude of contact electrification. Information obtained by capacitance-voltage measurements of thin polymer films on silicon showed that charges as large as 4 x 1012 electrons per cm2 develop spontaneously, and that such a charge gives adhesional forces of 165 pounds per square inch (11 atmospheres). Direct measurement of dust polymer contact electrification, using silicon surface channel conductance sensors, also showed spontaneous charges of more than 1012 electrons per cm2. Some polymers can either donate or accept electrons. These included chlorinated polyethylene, chlorinated polypropylene, polyethylmethacrylate, and a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinylether. Other polymers never accepted electrons but could donate electrons; these included polystyrene, pulychlorostyrune, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylacetate, a polycarbonate (Lexan), and cellulose tributyrate. Contact electrification studies were made with dusts (coal dust, a channel black, or a silica powder) contacting thin films of various polymers solvent-cast onto the semiconductor charge-sensor. Sometimes charging was instantaneous and sometimes slower, but in all but one case (coal dust on a copolymer of maleic anhydride with n-octadecylvinyl ether) the charge trunsfer was a donation of electrons by the polymer to the dust. The technical literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing, and the factors entering into, the economical production of fine materials. In fine grinding, whether for the purpose of producing fine material, or for the unlocking of minerals in an ore, close control of the screen sizes of primary-crusher products is of secondary consideration and accordingly has received very little attention. The growth and development of the nonmetallic industries, however, have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested in the production of relatively coarse products that meet certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that existing in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions, a knowledge of the factors governing the selection and operation of primary-crushing equipment is essential to the economical production of a satisfactory material.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.
