The adjacent towns of Rouyn and Noranda, centers of the Rouyn mining district of western Quebec, are 360 miles by air line almost duo north of Toronto. Rouyn is reached from the main lines of the Canadian National Railways and the Canadian Pacific Railway at North Bay, Ontario, by the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway and its subsidiary, the Nipissing Central Railway. Noranda is the southwestern terminus of a branch from the Canadian National Railway between Winnipeg and Quebec. The Rouyn mining district is a part of a mineralized zone that has been traced for a distance of 140 miles from Kirkland Lake in Ontario eastward into the Province of Quebec to the Pascalis district. From Rouyn the mine is 5 miler almost duo south over a gravel rend built by the company with assistance from the Province of Quebec.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECT OF EXPERIMENTAn explosion in and rupture of a gas-tight switch box on an electric loader in a mine located near Pittsburgh indicated that the cause was an internally generated inflammable gas-air mixture. This led to the suspicion that moisture condensation or ""other unusual conditions might have caused a spark or are across the surface of the material and that the heat may have created a carbonized path across the synthetic plastic base which would then conduct a large current with the generation of considerable heat and thermal decomposition of the base materials base in the box which exploded gave every indication that this series of events had taken place, and accordingly it was desired to determine what explosive gases such a decomposition of these insulating materials would produce.ACKNOWNLEDGMENTSThe desirability of making this investigation was suggested to the authors by L. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

Operating practices and resulting production from longwall faces are continually improving. Consequently, longwall operators are continually seeking to improve the dust control capabilities on longwalls. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting dust surveys at longwalls throughout the country in an effort to document the types of controls that are being used and to quantify the relative effectiveness of these controls. To date, surveys have been completed at longwalls in Alabama, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Utah, and West Virginia. In addition NIOSH has been reviewing longwall dust parameters provided by mine operators to MSHA to assess the status of dust control technology being used throughout the industry. Results from the underground dust surveys and information obtained from MSHA will be summarized in this paper to provide an update on longwall dust control technology and practices.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of its mission to effect pollution abatement, conducted research to study various means of dewatering Florida phosphatic clay wastes and reclaiming mined lands. The work was done in cooperation with 10 Florida phosphate companies. During this work, a novel technique to effectively dewater phosphatic clay wastes was developed. The solids contained in the clay waste slurry are slowly compressed by moving wire mesh screens through the system. In a typical application, the screens were moved downward, compressing solids ahead of the screens. The rate of movement of the screens is an important variable in the process. It is believed that the moving screens distort the gel structure of the phosphatic clay system and cause the release of water. Samples of 18 clay wastes, including a high-grade attapulgite from beneficiation plants of the Florida phosphate field, were studied using the method. Typical samples were concentrated from initial solids of 4.7 and 11.9 percent to 16.8 and 25.2 percent, respectively, in 3-1/2 days. The high-grade attapulgite sample was dewatered from 2.7 percent solids to 13 percent solids in the same period.

This report presents the results of a study of gas injection in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones in fault block VB and in the Upper Terminal zone in fault block VI, Wilmington field, California. This report is based on data obtained to January 1956. Earlier studies of gas injection in other California fields have been reported .3/ The Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, have been producing oil since 1945 and the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, since 1948. Before starting the gas-injection project, the expansion of dissolved gas was the principal mechanism moving the oil to the wells. Gravity drainage and an edgewater drive also have contributed to the movement of the oil to the wells. When the gas injection was begun, the reservoir pressure and the oil production had declined appreciably. Gas injection was started in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, in May 1953 and in the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, in October 1953.

"Railroad locomotives produce heat, gas, and smoke, which cause considerable discomfort to engine men and firemen while passing through tunnels. In order to try and improve these conditions, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the composition of atmospheres in cabs of freight locomotives while in tunnels; and some of the higher temperatures in the cabs were noted; physiological effects upon men were determined and gas masks and respirators were devised to eliminate the effects of irritating and poisonous gases and smoke. Those investigations were conducted in tunnels of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific railroads; while that described in this paper was carried out in tunnels of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Railroad, situated in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia, Freight locomotives used by this railroad are of the Mallet type, which have two separate cylinders: and two separate sets of driving wheels on each side. In locomotive language they are of the 2-6-6-2 type. All of the cylinders act as simple engines when starting or in slow, heavy hauling; but at faster speeds the pair of cylinders on each side operate compound, Mallet locomotives are the largest and most powerful now operated.The tendency in train operation has always been to increase the burden upon locomotives, Present traffic needs frequently load even the Mallet engine to capacity, and yet the weight of trains tends to increase. It has been suggested as a means of securing greater power units that Mallets be constructed to operate only as simple engines. This would increase the amount of steam given off as the amount of coal burned and the resulting volume of flue gas emitted."

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Early in the nineteenth century, coal from Clearfield County entered the eastern commercial market. Ashley reports that coal was moved down the Susquehanna River by ark from Clearfield to Columbia, a distance of 260 miles, as early as 18o4. Around 1850, the famous Moshannon or Lower Freeport bed was discovered. Several years later the Moshannon Basin was developed extensively, and the coal from this area soon acquired an enviable reputation as a high-quality industrial fuel. Today much of the original Moshannon Basin coal is worked out, and the Lower Kittanning bed has replaced the Lower Freeport bed as the principal source of production in southeast Clearfield County. With depletion of the thick underground deposits, the importance 'of Clearfield County as a coal Producer would have diminished rapidly, if it had not been for strip mining the thinner beds. About 60 percent of the coal produced in the county is strip-mined, and the trend toward this mining method is expected to continue as the older underground operations are exhausted. Many strip mines are working in beds that are too thin to be recovered economically by any other method.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, with its vast resources of relatively low-grade zinc been the world's leading producer of zinc -metal for many years. The expanded zinc production during the period, 1939-44, inclusive, was induced by favorable premium prices and has depleted the known ore reserves in the United States. The 1943-44 rate of zinc production cannot long be maintained in the United States, especially if premium prices are removed. Domestic zinc reserves, have been depleted to such an extent that it is doubtful if our mines will again be able to completely and continually fulfill the needs of this country.The Bureau of Mines, anticipating a postwar consumer demand for 550,000 to 750,000 tons of slab zinc and an additional 100,000 tons for use in paints and chemicals, sent two engineers to Sedanka Island in July 1945 to investi¬gate the deposits near Biorka Harbor.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion the Mining Branch, Lowell B. This work is a codification and annotation of the Congressional enactments relating to minerals, mineral lands, and mining. It covers every enactment of Congress from the original ordinance of 1785 to the present time, as well as all sections of the Revised Statutes of the United States relating to these subjects. These laws are grouped according to their general subject matter, and are arranged thereunder in numerical or chronological order. Many of the mining statutes include matter not pertinent to the subject, and only those parts of such acts are quoted as will properly show their relation to minerals and mineral lands and indicate how they should be construed. Some mining acts have been repealed or have become obsolete, and others have become incorporated substantially in sections of the Re- vised Statutes; but these are retained in order to show the changes made, and the constructions placed thereon by the courts are given as aids in construing the new or repealing acts. The annotations consist of legal propositions abstracted from the decisions of the various courts and executive officers of the Govern- ment that have interpreted the sections and statutes so codified. These legal propositions are arranged under the different sections and acts with appropriate headings, titles, and subtitles, in logical order, exhibiting the present status of each particular section or act and its application to the subject of mines and mineral lands. The annotations do not purport to be abstracts of decisions on the sub- stantive law of mines and mining generally, but are limited strictly to the interpretation placed on a given section or act definitely re- ferred to by a court or executive officer by the number of the section of the Revised Statutes or the volume and page of the Statutes at Large in which the Congressional enactment is found. It may be observed that the legal propositions stated are not always pertinent to the particular section or act under which they are classed and of which they purport to give a construction. The arrangement, however, is not an arbitrary one, but is so made for the reason that the courts or officers in the construction of a particular section or act definitely referred to by number or volume and page incorporated in the decision matter not strictly pertinent to the par- ticular section or act so designated. This statement applies especially to the interpretations placed on the sections of the Revised Statutes. In a Bureau of Mines investigation to develop lead alloys with improved tensile strength and creep resistance, lead-base alloys containing cadmium and antimony in nominal 1-to-1 atomic ratios were melted in air, cast, and rolled into sheet to 90 percent reduction at temperatures varying from room temperature to 175° C. Tensile testing at room temperature and stress-rupture testing at 900±3° F were conducted on the as-rolled alloys. The best tensile properties were observed in an alloy of Pb-4.2 wt pct Cd-4.5 wt pct Sb which exhibited an average tensile strength of 7,270 psi with 36 percent elongation in 2 inches. An alloy of Pb-5.5 wt pct Cd-6.0 wt pct Sb had 100-hour stress-rupture values of approximately 2,100 psi and 1,000-hour values of approximately 1,700 psi.

The monetary metals , gold and silver , have recently been the object of such general interest that the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding them . Though requests for technologic information have been numerous , they have been exceeded in number by those concerned with economic aspects of these metals . The nature of the latter communications indicates that the public is not generally aware that various Bureau publications are available which deal with the economic situation of gold and silver . For this reason , it is deemed advisable to present a brief résumé of the papers which are obtainable from the Bureau or the Superintendent of Documents , together with the text of three articles recently prepared by the Director , reprints of which are not otherwise available . The Bureau of Mines compiles figures showing mine production of gold and silver , by districts and States , and cooperates with the Bureau of the Mint in determining the total annual output in the United States as a whole . 3 It recently established an annual canvass to determine the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States , and published an economic paper covering such use in 1928 and 1929 , followed by an information circular on silver consumption by industry during the 2 years subsequent . A 4-year record is thus provided for those interested in utilization of silver . The Bureau has also published summarizations of all available data upon world production since 1493 of gold and of silver . It has , furthermore , rendered available a compilation of production- data of silver mines of the world , and an analysis of it , showing the proportions of silver and other metals contained in all the ores from which silver is derived . " All of these papers are concerned solely with putting into readily usable form statistical data and other factual material ; they do not offer theories or express opinions upon controversial questions related to these metals . Three other recent papers concerned with gold and silver are presented below in order to put them in shape for distribution by the United States Bureau of Mines . The purpose of the development described in this report and as stated in the contract work statement is to "design, develop, fabricate, test and demonstrate, and deliver to the government permissible low cost cylindrical stress gauges and associated components capable of measuring change of stress as a function of time in underground coal mines. The cylindrical stress gauges shall be suitable for installation in bore holes". The technique adopted for measuring rock stress changes is to preload a steel cylinder diametrically across the sides of a 1-1/2 in diameter bore hole and detect deformation of the cylinder from stress changes in the rock, by means of a vibrating wire transducer. By calibration, changes in the period (time for one wire oscillation at the natural frequency) of a high tensioned wire stretched diametrically across the cylinder in the direction of load application are related to stress changes in the rock. To completely evaluate the stress field change in the plane of the bore hole, three gauges set at an angle to each other are required.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a method for determining the H2S content in natural gas samples. A gas chromatograph with a flame photometric detector was used to analyze samples with H2S concentrations ranging from 5,000 ppm to a minimum detectable limit of 0.01 ppm. A mass spectrometer was used to analyze samples containing H2S in amounts greater than 5,000 ppm. Methods are presented for preparing containers for H2S samples and for preparing standards using partial pressure and weighed standard methods, Sample collection techniques are discussed, as are analytical results which illustrate the loss of H2S while in the sample container and provide a basis for evaluating containers used for sampling and standard preparation.

As part of a research program for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime-sinter, caustic leach technology for anorthosite. This report discusses the unit operations--feed preparation, sintering, and leaching. Acceptable pellets for the bench-scale sintering studies were prepared from mixtures of minus 200-mesh anorthosite and limestone using water alone as the pelletizing agent. Heating pellets at 1,270° to 1,360° C for periods of 0.5 to 2 hr, followed by a 15-min soaking period at 700° C and cooling to room temperature, produced a sinter that dusted to more than 90 pct minus 65 mesh. The weight ratio of limestone to anorthnsite was critical in producing sinter exhibiting good dusting and leaching characteristics. A ratio of 2.0 was optimum for the bulk samples of anorthosite and limestone used in this research. Leach solutions from lower ratio sinters were unstable; gelation became progressively more severe with higher ratio sinters. Leaching the dusted sinter with 10-pct Na2CO3 at 60° C extracted 85 to 90 pct of the alumina in a product solution containing about 50 g/l A1203. Leach residue in contact with pregnant solution tended to set up as a rigid gel as a result of cementation, comp action, and gelation. The presence of a calcium-sodium zeolite [(Cn,Na2)6?(Al2Si04)12?27-3OH20] in the ungelled residues seemed to be the main difference between gelled and ungelled residues.

Tri-axial strains in pillars, created by pillar robbing, were measured in an experiment at the Dysart No. 1 uranium mine near Grants) New Mexico. At this mine, room-and-pillar stoping is used on the advance, and pillars are recovered on the retreat. The are deposit is, for all practical purposes, horizontal. Measuring devices were installed in pillars approximately 90 to 200 feet from the break line, and strains were recorded over a 4-to 6-week period. The measurements indicate that, in general, the algebraic magnitude of vertical strains increased, and the horizontal strains decreased, in turn, indicating that vertical (or near vertical) loads on the instrumented pillars lessened as pillars were recovered.

Structural properties of steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete and polymer-impregnated shotcrete, both plain and fiber-reinforced, were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center. The research center has found that flexural strengths can be increased by as much as 106 percent, and splitting-tensile strength by 50 percent, by introducing randomly oriented steel fibers. A slight decrease of compressive strength was found in the fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Polymer-impregnated shotcrete exhibited a threefold to fourfold increase in compressive and splitting-tensile strength. The techniques of preparing shotcrete with the dry process, using both fast-set agents and regulated-set cement, are described, along with the results of physical-property testing. Physical properties include compressive and splitting-tensile strengths, tangent and secant moduli, and stress-strain curves for plain shotcrete, fiber-reinforced shotcrete, and polymer-impregnated plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Flexural strengths for plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete are also reported. Steel-fiber shotcrete is the more promising of the new structural materials for ground support, and additional research is recommended.

Information on total estimated uranium reserves and domestic requirements have been collected, A survey has been made on the possibilities of recovery of uranium from low grade and complex ore deposits, e.g., marine phosphorites, shales, coal, sea water, etc. In order to assess the potential for uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites, available thermodynamic data of uranium minerals, compounds and aqueous species have been collected. The existence of uranium complexes with chloride, fluoride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, etc., in ground waters have been evaluated at different pH's. There seems a great need to study the relative stability of these complexes in order to judge the applicability of solution mining technology for selective leaching of uranium from phosphorites. A typical flow-sheet demonstrating recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid has been included in this report. Some essential features of the economics of uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites have been briefly considered and recommendation have been made for further studies.

Prier to the date of this contract, Ocean Energy had developed and demonstrated a high efficiency fluorescent caplamp which operated from a standard 4 volt miner's caplamp battery. This unit produced about five times the light output of the standard incandescent miner's caplamp. The Company believed that the major market for this unique caplamp was in the industrial and municipal applications. Because of the additional safety requirements for coal mining use, and in conjunction with the much smaller market in the mining industry, the additional expense and difficulty of modifying this caplamp to comply with the Federal and State coal mine regulations were not considered at that time. Recognizing the potential of this lamp for improving illumination conditions for underground coal mining, the US Bureau of Mines contracted with Ocean Energy to make the required modifications to this lamp to bring it into compliance with the Federal and State of Pennsylvania regulations, and thereby, make this lamp available to the anthracite and bituminous coal mining industry. At the outset of the contract, the injection molds for the caplamp housing were being completed, and only prototype, hand fabricated, units were available for tests. The Bureau evaluated these prototype units and formulated a performance specification for the miner's version. Light level and distribution, weight, size, angle of tilt, and operating duration were all specified. In addition, it was required that the caplamp be com¬patible with existin charging equipment at the mines and that the final design be in full compliance with MESA Schedule 6D and he ultimately approved by MESA, Approval and Testing, as well as by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Deep Mine Safety. The scope of this contract covered the modifications required to achieve these objectives. It was agreed by the Bureau that all rights to the lamp, including design, material combinations, circuitry, etc. would remain with Ocean Energy. The charger/adapter system and components, which were developed under contract funds, are disclosed hero and become public knowledge and property. Patent applications have been filed by Ocean Energy to protect the mechanical and electrical design aspects of the lamp. It should be noted that this report contains details, designs and data which may be covered by one or more Ocean Energy patent applications, and disclosure herein is made only to provide better understanding of the contract results.
