Eight samples of high-volatile bituminous coal, each large enough for a study of its coking properties by the Bureau of Mines, were obtained from a location along the Kukpowruk River, Arctic Northwestern Alaska. Bench scale and pilot plant carbonization studies with several patterns of coal blending were conducted. The data from these tests were compared to data from similar tests on a coking blend used by the Kaiser Steel Corporation at Fontana, Calif. The majority of the samples representing the 20-foot seam was found to have significant coking properties, and produced coke approaching metallurgical quality when blended with selected coking coals. Although oxidation effects were evident in the samples representing upper portions of the seam, it appears that the whole seam could be used.

The percentage of coal cleaned mechanically has increased greatly in the past 30 years. This technological change in preparation methods, accompanied by mechanical innovations in most phases of coal mining, has enabled the industry to supply quality coals at competitive prices. The Bureau of Mines has contributed to this progress by conducting research on coal-preparation problems, by evaluating the performance of domestic-and foreign-made preparation equipment, and by recording advances as they occur in industrial coal-cleaning practices. The Bureau's work in this field is recorded in the more than 150 technical and scientific publications listed in this volume. These reports, published by the Bureau over the past half century, document the Nation's progress in a vitally important phase of fuel technology.

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

The Brenneman oil field in Grant District, Hancock County, W. VA., was selected for study by Bureau of Mines engineers because it was typical of many of the smaller petroleum reservoirs in the Appalachian region. In 1906, E. W. Marland & Co. discovered the Brenneman field by drilling a well that readied the oil-bearing .Berea sandstone at a depth of 750 feet and initially produced 200 barrels of oil a day. Most of the oil-productive area (348 acres) of the field was developed in a comparatively short time, and the initial daily production rates of some of the wells were as high as 1,000 barrels of oil a day. Although the field was a prolific producer of oil for several years, it was abandoned in 1923 when the production rate was less than 1,000 barrels of oil a year and 705,000 barrels of oil had been produced. Secondary-recovery operations were started in the Brenneman field in 1927 after useable old wells had been repaired and unsatisfactory wells had been plugged; drilling of new wells was started in 1929. The peak of the redevelopment program was reached in 1942 when 92 oil-producing wells and 26 injection wells were in use; both air And mixtures of air and natural gas were used for injection purposes. It is estimated that approximately 357,000 barrels of oil, equivalent to 1,030 barrels per acre, 105 barrels per acre-foot, 8.5 percent of the total pore volume, or 11.9 percent of the original oil in place will be produced as a result of gas-injection secondary-recovery operations. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Field Office, Franklin, Pa., are studying secondary-recovery projects in the Appalachian region as a part, of the Bureau's secondary recovery research and are reporting these studies so that others: can profit by the experience gained from the operations. In common with most of the other Appalachian oil fields, there was no natural water drive in the Brenneman field. The estimated oil saturation in the Brenneman reservoir at the end of economic gas-injection operation indicates that additional oil might be recovered economically by water flooding and that a pilot flood would be warranted.

To aid in designing a continuous system for evaluating processes for converting coal to high-Btu gas] the Bureau of Mines determined the amenability of various coals and a char to hydrogasification at 800° C and 6,000 psig using a molybdenum catalyst. A lignite from Rockdale, Tex., an hvCb coal from Rock Springs, Wyo., a char from the low-temperature carbonization of the latter, an hvAb coal from Pittsburgh, Pa., and an anthracite from Luzerne County, Pa., were selected. Highest yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, 94 pet, based on maf feed, were produced from char, and lowest yields, 67 pct, were obtained from lignite. Hydrocarbon gases contained 82 to 92 pct methane, 8 to 15 pct ethane; and 1 to 3 pct propane.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-proof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges.

In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. This report summarizes the results of the Narragansett Win Projec't's activities during the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) Phase 1, which was transitional from and which followed the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase which initiated the investigation of New England's potential roil resource. The 960 sq. mile basin is structural and topographic lowland containing 12,000 to 20,000 ft. of terrigenous clastic sediments of late Pennsylvanian age, and which rests on an upper Precambrian and Cambrian basement. The Rhode Island Formation, which is the coal-bearing unit, comprising the bulk of the Pennsylvanian rocks consists, in order of decreasing abundance, of sandstone, conglomerate, silts tone, shale, and coal. In the NSF Phase, 24 drill-holes yielded 17,900 ft, of core; in the BOM Phase I study, 4 drillholes yielded 2,100 ft. of core. Anthracite and semi-anthracite was encountered in beds Up to 30 ft. thick in widely spaced parts of the Basin. The coal, typically very low in sulfur, and a high ash anthracite, won mined in substantial volumes from 1808 to 1959 from shaft and open lit in Portsmouth and Cranston, R.I., and in lesser volumes in Mansfield, Mass. Currently coal is now being mined in Plainville, Mass. as a fuel in the manufacturing of light-weight aggregate from the same quarry that serves as the source of the rock being processed. The structurally complex Narragansett Basin is now known to have a greater extent than earlier since recent drilling by others (Chapter 2) has confirmed our interpretation that the Basin extended offshore south A Boston. The, Basin also extends into Rhode Island Sound to the south. The geological structure is more complex in the southern part of the Basin than in the northern part. Three episodes of folding have been documented on Aquidneck Island and four episodes of faulting have been demonstrated for the Basin as a whole. Relatively less well exposed rock in the northern part of the Basin, increases the difficulty of recognizing and correlating structural episodes in the northern part of the Basin. The Basin his hewn subdivided into six structural domains which appear to have distinctive structural, metamorphic, paleontological and sedimentological differences that mw assist in isolating important events in the evolution of the Basin and its component parts. The tentative structural model recently developed in POP Phase I has important implications for exploration and mining. In the first and second folding stages the coal is mobilized and thickened in the crests and troughs of folds whose axes are horizontal to subhorizontal. While conventional coal exploration and mining methods are not applicable, great thickening in the crests and troughs of large scale structures, which can he defined by geology, geophysics and drilling, may provide compensating advantages. Bedrock over most of the Basin is 0-50 ft., but thicknesses of glacial deposits up to 150 ft. are present locally. Pro-Pleistocene topographic trends are controlled by structure and rock hardness; Pleistocene deposits aligned to the S. F. are superimposed on earlier trends. The southern part of the Basin is mainly dominated by high grade Barrovian metamorphism and plutonism of Permian age, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny. About 300 sq. miles of the 960 sq. mile Basin has been affected. The remaining 660 sq. miles, in the chlorite and subchlorite zones of metamorphism are compatible with the presence of high quality anthracite and semi-anthracite. Illite crystallinity studies begun in the NSF Phase, have been carried out in the BOM Phase l with important results. About ME of the northern Basin is now known to be in the diagenetic (unmetamorphosed) or subchlorite zone and the remainder in the chlorite zone of metamorphism. Mite studies, probably best recording temperature effects, show a generally progressive increase from the NW corner of the Basin near Plainville, Mass. toward the south and southeast. Reflectivity and coal petrography studies, probably best recording pressure and effects related to shearing, indicate a generally opposite pattern. Thus these methods provide powerful tools for the ultimate solution of problems important to coal exploration for coals of higher combustible volatile content and exploitation of these. Due to the complex nature of the coal, chemical data may not he easily used to determine rank. The coals have been tectonically deformed and mineralized. This deformation plus thermal metamorphism have altered the coals, in some cases by producing natural coke. Brecciated coal is often coated with a secondary depositional carbon. The coals' hydroscopic nature and high ash contents are due to the deformed nature of the coal and the presence of this secondary carbon. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the coal-bearing Rhode Island Formation is similar to described alluvial fan deposits. The non-geological studies al-low three conclusions to be made: 1. A substantial number of areas have been identified in the Narragansett Basin in which mining could be carried out without undue difficulty from a land use point of view. 2. Substantially more than two hundred instances of past or current- mining activities have been identified in the Basin. Many of those are in areas defined as geologically interesting, and may be advantageous From the point of view of future exploration. 3. The map synthesis technique developed for this contract is successful and may easily be adapted to future exploration in its current form and also in its expandable form dealing with unit measurements of one-tenth mile. We recommend that BOM Phase 2 exploration should accomplish the intent of the Congressional language in House Report No. 95-1251, to continue a substantial drilling and geophysics program: "The Committee expects the Bureau to continue studies involved in ascertaining the extent and quality of low sulfur coal reserves in the Narragansett Basin in New England including necessary drilling and geophysical studies. The knowledge of the extent of such deposits is of great importance to this 'energy pour' area".

Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road and bleeder entries in a Western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install cable supports in a tailgate and bleeder entry test area using traditional resin cartridges. Resin-grouted cable bolts were also installed and evaluated in additional longwall gate road and bleeder entry systems at the study mine. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the tailgate and bleeder entries. Cable supports replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and minimized the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This report describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods of sodium reduction of titanium chlorides to produce high purity titanium metal (14).4/ This investigation was made to obtain a better understanding of the reactions involved in sodium reduction of titanium chlorides and was part of the Bureau's activities toward improving the technology of titanium. Theoretical and experimental evidence show that sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride occurs by stepwise reactions. The first stage reduction between sodium vapor and vapors of titanium chlorides produces titanium di-and trichlorides which subsequently condense with sodium chloride to form a salt mixture. The second stage reduction takes place in the condensed salt mixture between sodium and titanium subchlorides. Final reduction is a heterogeneous reaction between two separate phases, the a phase which consisted of sodium dissolved in sodium chloride and the ß phase titanium subchlorides dissolved in sodium chloride. The mechanism of the heterogeneous reaction between these phases is electrochemical in nature. The model proposed is a galvanic reaction at the interfacial region.

The concept of an Automated Continuous Explosive Excavation system (ACEE) for the underground mining applications of development drifting and room and pillar mining has been evaluated in comparison with conventional drill, blast and muck operations. The role and possible extent of application as this method was identified. The evaluation examined each element of existing and of proposed ACEE design concepts in a defined mine environment. Step by step procedures were developed to quantify the evaluation process where this appeared feasible. One conclusion drawn was that a system approach to ACEE design is not only feasible but attainable within the state of the art. Several preliminary design concepts were formulated and examined in order to determine what further research or development might be needed to realize them.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the design and tests of a gage that will simultaneously measure the deformation of a borehole along three diameters 60 degrees apart; the measurements are in a single plane normal to the axis of the borehole. The inherent errors in measurement are considered together with the problems associated with the use of the gage in the relatively severe environments in and around mine openings. These problems were treated in the design and tests of the gage and the results establish that the gage can be used to satisfactorily is determine estimates of the stresses in rock.

MORE than a year before the United States entered World War II, the requirements of the National Defense Program indicated the need for additional sources of aviation gasoline. On September 10, 1940, Dr. R. E. Wilson, Group Executive, Advisory Commission of the Council for National Defense, requested the Bureau of Mines to undertake a survey of crude oils of the United States to designate those suitable for the production of 91-octane aviation gasoline. As quickly as a program could be defined, agreed upon, and funds provided to conduct the work, the Bureau began the project. Over a period of many years the Bureau had collected samples and made analyses of thousands of crude oils produced in the United States. Although these analyses did not include octane numbers of the gasoline fraction, they provided data necessary for calculating the correlation index. This index, developed within the Bureau, is a measure of the types of hydrocarbons present in gasoline and therefore is roughly indicative of the octane value. This fund of information from Bureau of Mines Hempel analyses, supplemented by information obtained from oil companies, reduced considerably the necessary laboratory work by providing data that permitted a large number of crude oils to be eliminated from consideration. However, in the survey carried out during the last part of 1940 and the first half of 1941, 225 samples of crude oil were collected and distilled. Octane values of the distillates were determined by the Army AFD-1C method. (See page 57.) A report containing these results, together with the calculated amounts of 91-octane aviation gasoline available from these sources, was prepared and distributed to the several offices of the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense in August 1941. In December 1942 the Office of the Petroleum Coordinator for National Defense became the Petroleum Administration for War (P. A. W.).

The first order of business this morning is remarks by the Honorable Russell Train, Under Secretary of the Department of Interior. Mr. Train. MR. TRAIN: Thank you, Mr. Rigg. Lest you think that Hollis Dole is not interested in this symposium, let me just say that fie is flying back from Australia just to be here. He is heading up a United States delegation in Australia meeting on resource problems in the Pacific. And I believe he will be here about noon.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining work place associated with coal bumps. Current research focuses on both analyzing historical seismic data from bump-prone operations and utilizing a mine-wide seismic network to investigate the exact strata failure mechanics associated with bump-prone geology. The anticipated outcome of this research will be reduced bump incidences through advanced engineering concepts and designs which implement the new understanding of strata behavior. The analysis of the historic seismic data consists of correlating observed mining seismicity with the geologic and geometric parameters at the sites. The primary seismic parameters are the timing, location and magnitude of are corded seismic event. These parameters are correlated with such mining parameters as: the overburden, the size of the immediate gob, the size of the district gob area, etc. This detailed analysis of historical seismic data has provided an informative quantifiable relationship between many of the specific mining parameters and the induced seismicity. The second aspect of the coal bump research is the instrumentation of an appropriate field site to determine the main roof, floor, and gob behavior associated with bump behavior. The chosen field site is a deep-cover longwall mine with competent geology in a historically bump-prone area. The primary field instrumentation is a three-dimensional, full-waveform, seismic array with both surface and underground sensors surrounding an active multi-panel district. The purpose of this seismic array is to determine the timing, the exact location, and the mechanism (tensile fracture, bedding plane slip, etc.) of the failure of the strata surrounding the active and multi-panel gobs. The preliminary results presented in this paper help to define the strata failure areas around the longwall panel.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. Despite the wide interest in titanium and its compounds, no heat and free-energy-of-formation values for titanates (that is, compounds formed from titania and other metal oxides) have been available heretofore except for ilmenite (FeTi03). Such data are needed for understanding and developing processes for producing titania and titanium tetrachloride from ores (and possibly slags) and in connection with ceramic usage of titania. This paper reports experimental measurements of the heats of formation at ordinary temperature of 11 titanates-ilmenite, perovskite, barium metatinate, strontium metatitanate, barium-strontium metatitanate, barium orthotitanate, strontium orthotitanate, barium-strontium othotitanate, geikielite, magnesium-titanium spinel, and magnesium dititanate. The experimental method was solution calorimetry. The solution calorimeter was operated at 73.7°C. and used a strong hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixture as the calorimetric fluid and reaction medium.

"INTRODUCTION This report gives preliminary results of field and laboratory investigations made at the request of the War Production Board relative to causes that have occurred during the last 8 months in acetylene-generat72,r plants in shipyards on the Pacific coast.Six acetylene-generator explosions have occurred in four shipyards. These explosions killed five operators, injured six others, and extensive damage to the plants involved and curtailmnent of vital defense Although the occurrence of acetyiene-generator explosions in other section of the United States is not known, it appears, at least, that if such have occurred, they have caused only minor damage and no loss of lives.The use of acetylene in shipyards on the west coast has expanded tremendously during the past 2 years. These shipbuilding, companies erected aletylene-generatcr equipment, which was soon found to be entirely inadequate to meet the needs of their expanding acetylene requirements for welding, cutting, shrinking, and other purposes, and instances found it necessary to operate their equipment at rates greater than deemed consistent with safe operating practice."

Ground and air vibrations induced by large surface blasts have been monitored. These field results, as well as a large number of published results, have been used to assess the performance of existing predictors and for the development of improved prediction methods. Field monitoring has been performed, with four seismographs giving complete wave records, at limestone quarries, coal strip mines and an open pit copper mine. Conventional analysis includes least square fitting of peak particle velocities and peak air overpressures with scaled distance formulations. Frequency content has been analyzed, and correlated with blast design (detonation sequence). Two new methods have been developed for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting. The proposed analytical predictor accounts explicitly for inelastic attenuation and geometrical spreading, and calculates the peak particle velocity as a function of charge weight and distance. Statistical analysis of case studies confirms the consistent improvement over conventional scaled distance predictors. The second new predictor is a computer program simulating blasts, including blast geometry, charge distribution and detonation sequence, and simulating propagation of individual pulses to any point of interest, where effects are summed. A complete blast vibration results, allowing prediction of frequency content and duration as well as peak velocities.
