Direct observation of the charge shape and its motion in industrial mills are not possible, it is then customary to use transparent end, small-scale mills (i.e., model mills) to determine the charge trajectory directly by visualization methods. Because of a short length of the model mills, the end-wall effects could introduce a significant bias on the observed charge trajectories and shape. The shorter the mill, the stronger the bias. This could be due to some material bridging between the end walls. In this research, the end-wall effects were investigated by gradually increasing the model mill length and analysing the charge trajectory and shape variation at a given operating conditions (i.e., ball filling, mill speed, liner type). The unbiased mill length was assumed to be beyond the mill length where no significant change observed in the charge trajectory and shape. For all tests, the torque of the charge was also measured by a torque sensor. The special design of the model mill with the diameter of 100 cm made possible to increase the mill length in steps of 3.6 cm up to 21.6 cm. Four types of liners, five steel ball fillings (10, 15, 20, 25, 30% v/v) and three mill speeds (55, 70, 85% of critical speed) were tested. The ball sizes ranged from 4 to 12 mm. The results indicated that when the mill length was below 10.8 cm the end walls prevented the charge from free falling. This resulted in lower impact point angles and lower power draws compared with the case of no end-wall effects. When the same experiments were performed using an iron ore instead of balls with the same size range, the impact of end-wall effects was more pronounced. For an increase of 30% in the speed (from 55 to 85%), the torque due the change in the charge shape decreased by 41% (from 3.7 to 2.2 kgf.m) when mill filling was 30%. At the same operating conditions when steel balls used the torque decreased only by 19% (from 9 to 7.2 kgf.m). This was expected due to irregular shapes of the ore particles which facilitated bridging. Three-dimensional DEM simulations also resulted in the similar conclusions.

This paper is aimed to elucidate the problem of copper losses in pyrometallurgical slag. Currently, flotation is used to recover copper from the slag and return the metal into the pyrometallurgical process, but the percentage of recovery frequently remains unacceptable. The process of copper leaching from the slag flotation tailings using biologically regenerated ferric sulfate is considered here as an approach to the issue. A sample of the slag flotation tailings containing 0.67% Cu and 4.99% Zn was supplied by the Urals Mining and Metallurgical Company (UGMK, Russia). The Cu and Zn speciation analysis of the sample demonstrated that Cu occurred as 58.1% oxide, 15.4% native Cu, and 18.1% secondary sulfides whereas chalcopyrite proportion was as low as 8.4%. Prevailing Zn species were refractory (58.9% Zn ferrite), and zinc oxide and silicate species made just 37.2% of the total metal content. The silicate generated silica gel that strongly hampered filtration. As demonstrated, Cu recovery is a possibility, which is apparently not the case with Zn. In this work, the stirred tank bioreactor acid leaching employing bacterial Fe3+ sulfate solutions was studied, with ferric sulfate being a product of Fe2+ biological oxidation and not the chemical reactant adding of Fe3+ sulfate. Acidithiobacillus, Sulfobacillus, and Leptospirillum bacilli were employed in Fe2+ biooxidation. Temperature, pH, Eh, S:L ratio, leaching time, and Fe3+ concentration in the source leachate as the process controls were considered. As demonstrated, the process employing biologically regenerated ferric sulfate proved to be more efficient than conventional chemical leaching. Under the optimum conditions, the proportion of Cu extracted into leachate during 2 hours was 79.1%, and that of Zn 27.2%. Precipitation of high-grade Cu sulfide served to extract the metals from the leachate, and Cu extraction was 99.7%. All in all, 23.2% Cu, 0.03% Zn, and 0.02% Fe was returned into the pyrometallurgical process. Keywords: slag flotation tailings, copper leaching

At this time, over 300 tons of Au are used in electronic equipment each year with other precious and strategic metals such as Ag, Pt, Pd, Cu, Nb, Ta, etc. After the use-phase, the electronic devices become electronic waste (e-waste); consequently it is important to consider e-waste as a secondary supply for recovery of these metals. One of the most important components is the printed circuit boards (PCBs) because the amount of their precious metals is ten times higher than rich precious metals bearing ore. This paper presents the recovery of Au, Ag, Cu and Nb from PCBs of discarded computers using leaching column technique. The amount of these metals in used PCBs was: 613 g/ton of Au, 1515 g/ton of Ag, 36 g/ton of Nb and 23.4 % of Cu. The PCBs were crushed with a hammer mill until reaching a particle size between 3.33 mm to 0.43 mm. Then, it was leached with sodium cyanide solution in a glass column using the following conditions: sodium cyanide concentration 4 g/L, flux 20 L/kg PCBs day, pH between 10.5 to 11 and leaching time 15 days. Every day, after leaching, the pregnant solutions passed through a column with activated carbon to complete the closed loop system. The following recoveries were obtained: 46.6% of Au, 51.3% of Ag, 47.2% of Nb and 62.3 % of Cu. The products obtained are: a) loaded carbon that contains the desired metals and b) processed PCBs with precious metal contents. A preliminary technical-economic study shows the feasibility to create a small-scale PCBs recycling plant. The initial investment is on the order of US$ 155 639, considering the recovered metals from loaded carbon. The internal rate of return for 10 years period (IRR) and net present value (NPV) estimated are 27% and US$ 105 926 respectively. "The adsorption of xanthate takes place at a different potential on each major sulfide mineral, hence, as it was demonstrated in the past, each mineral component can be selectively separated from ore under well controlled potential conditions. In real flotation this concept never works out for two reasons: the potential of single mineral particle results from complex surface reactions controlled by solution chemistry, and there is a galvanic interaction between different mineral particles present in the flotation pulp.In this study the formation of amyl xanthate hydrophobic products on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite has been spectroscopically investigated in the presence of combinations of these minerals. The type of the adsorbed species and their amount were determined directly on mineral surfaces by infrared external reflection technique. Galvanic contact between grains of two different minerals has tremendous consequence on the adsorption of collector on both minerals. The detected changes are dramatic, from no adsorption to a coverage formation of a few monolayers. The results obtained indicate clearly that the observations and conclusions about the collector adsorption, hence also the surface hydrophobization, made for a single mineral system does not describe the real situation in a multi-component mineral system such as flotation pulp."

"Besides valuable metals of Cu, Sn, WO3, Zn, there are S, Ag, CaF2, In and so on in a complex ore deposit in south China (which belongs to Hu Nan Shizhuyuan Non-ferrous Metal Limited Liability). Although it proved reserve amounts to 3.5×107 ton, its crystal character limits its utilization in large-scale. It features complex relationships between valuable minerals, finest crystallized particle size, low-graded valuable metals (Cu 0.30%, Zn 0.5-0.7%, Sn 0.2%, W<0.1%). If only tungsten minerals are considered, it means WO3 grade is too low (the cut-off grade of WO3 is 0.1% in China). Only Cu and Sn minerals are recovered from 2006 and Cu recovery is less than 70%, Sn 15-20%. Other valuable metals of W, Zn, S and CaF2 were lost in the tailings. To make good use of the ore, the technology of fully recovering Cu, Sn, W, Zn, CaF2 and rare metals are in urgent need. After systematic researches, the flow sheet of "bulk flotation of Cu-Zn minerals at first, then Cu-Zn separation, then recovering sulphide by flotation, then recovering iron minerals by magnetic separation, then bulk flotation of Sn-W minerals after desliming" is developed. Furthermore, specific Sn-W collectors of BK411 and BK412 are applied into the processes and better indexes are obtained. The industrial indexes are listed as followings: the content of Cu, Zn, Sn, WO3 of ROM ore is 0.31%, 0.65%, 0.13%, 0.03%; Cu and Zn recovery are 82.23% and 37.79% respectively; 63.76% of Sn and 34.34% of WO3 go into the Sn-W bulk concentrates. Economic benefits are remarkable."

Facing the optimization activities, which purpose is to minimize the copper processing costs, the main sources of their occurring were presented. In this purpose, the costs analysis was performed, divided to individual standings, for one of the polish copper beneficiation plants. It was proved, that the main component of the copper beneficiation costs is energy consumption, generated mainly in grinding and classification node, particularly by operating mills. The technological system ? grinding and classification node ? in KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., ZWR region Lubin was then selected to investigation. To evaluate the grinding and classification node, the energetic factors W were proposed, calculated on the basis of the energetic-technological data of process, given by node monitoring system. The correctness of the energetic factors selection to evaluate the work of this node and their practical application in industrial conditions was experimentally proved in other technological object. The selected technological object ? grinding and classification node ? was then mathematically modeled and optimized. The calculated energetic factors were the basis to build mathematical models, identifying industrial copper grinding and classification process. The models described correlation and character of dependency between factors and energetic-technical data of the process. These were regressive and neural networks models. On the basis of factors models, the optimization tasks were determined, which purpose was to select the optimal points of grinding and classification node work. Also, the estimated economical effect, possible to achieve after introduction of given monitoring values to grinding and classification node optimization system, was presented.

"The sustainability of the mining industry must be addressed through improving tailings management. The use of thickened tailings and pastes stems from a paradigm shift towards designing tailings disposal sites to suit their surrounding environment, rather than manipulating the environment to accommodate the tailings. Thickened tailings and pastes usually exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour, so a thorough understanding of the rheological characteristics of the material is required in order to determine the disposal plant operating conditions.Full Cost Accounting techniques may be used to provide financial justification for the implementation of alternative tailings disposal techniques through the calculation of a disposal cost per tonne of tailings over the life of the facility. Improved disposal methods such as thickened tailings disposal involve additional initial capital expenditure but reduce environmental impacts. The cost savings associated with environmental impact mitigation are reflected in Full Cost Accounting outcomes.Rheological characterisation is significant as a design basis that may be analysed using Full Cost Accounting to justify the initial capital expenditure of dry disposal systems for improved environmental performance."

Spent automobile catalyst is an important secondary resource of PGMs (platinum group metals) and the recovery is significant. Various methods of recovery technology have been reported and applied in practical production, including pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes. Since the grade of PGMs in the catalysts is so low, approximately 0.5 wt. %, the present recycling technologies require high energy-consumption, it is of great significance to enrich the PGMs with some energy saving physical separation methods as a pretreatment. Automobile catalyst is usually composed of cordierite phase as a substrate and alumina phase, with PGMs, which covers the cordierite phase. We adopted the quenching pretreatment, one method of thermal shock, to generate micro-cracks between the two phases and separate the alumina phase from cordierite. Quenching was carried out by heating the catalysts in an electric furnace of different temperatures followed by rapid soaking into cold water. It was found that the phase boundary between alumina and cordierite was broken in the quenching and selective separation (detachment) of alumina from the cordierite could be achieved in the following surface grinding. The effect of quenching was checked by microscopic observation, hardness measurement, and chemical analysis. This paper figures out the stress formula of the quenching process, which is largely connected with layer thickness and temperature gradient by using an FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation and clarifies the mechanism of crack generation in the quenching process. "Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."

The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.

A detailed study was undertaken to beneficiate sub-grade iron ore sample from Kenojhar District, Orissa, India containing 57% Fe (T), 7.7% SiO2, 4.8% Al2O3, 4 % L.O.I. 0.4% TiO2,1.3 % Mn and traces of S(T) to make it suitable for the user industry. The mineralogical study indicated that it predominantly consists of haematite with subordinate amounts of goethite and clay. Quartz, Cryptomelane / Psilomelane, Pyrolusite, Gibbsite, Feldspar and Muscovite mica were present in very minor to trace amounts. The Denver grind ability tests indicated, that the sample could be categorized as ?medium soft to medium.? The Bond ball mill work index was determined to be 14.19 kwh per short ton. The beneficiation process involved classification followed by tabling of the classified sand, ground to minus 48 mesh size. The table slimes were subjected to Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). The developed process yielded a composite concentrate from tabling and WHIMS operations assaying 65% Fe(T), 2% SiO2, 1.8% Al2O3, 2% Mn and 0.9% LOI with a recovery of 60.1% Fe (T), amounting to 52.5 wt.% yield. To meet the size specifications for pellet making, it was further ground. Dewatering studies were also carried out on the ground combined concentrate and rejects. The thickener area of ground combined concentrate using 0.02 kg/t of Sufloc A 1115 flocculant was 0.02 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. And for the combined rejects using 0.12 kg/t of flocculant, it was 0.035 m2/tonne of dry solids per 24 h. The moisture content, in the pressure filtration cake, in the ground combined concentrate product was 10.0%, and productivity was 506.7 kg/m2h. Thus, by thickening and filtration of process products, 90% of water used in the process could be recovered. The study highlights the development of a simple and cost effective flowsheet with almost complete water recovery for a subgrade iron ore sample. Keywords: tabling, WHIMS, thickener, filtration

Due to the shortage of fresh water in the Middle East, seawater has been used as an alternative in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process requires about 7 m3 of water/mt ore. This article aims to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation. Natural pure francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz were characterized by chemical, thermal and x-ray diffraction analyses, surface area, solubility and zeta potential. Synthetic seawater was prepared with the major chemical composition similar to natural seawater as follow; 2.45% NaCl, 0.52% MgCl2, 0.41% Na2SO4, 0.116% CaCl2 and 0.07% KCl. Also, natural seawater was used in application. The point zero of charge was estimated at pH 6.5, 7.8, 9.2 and 2.2 for francolite, calcite, dolomite and quartz, respectively. Calcium ions were released from the three minerals with Mg2+ and P2O5 3– released from dolomite and phosphate, respectively. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The effect of individual cations and anions predominant in seawater are studied on individual mineral or group. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions should be controlled by soda ash addition. Sodium silicate improved the selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate of 34% P2O5, at 83% recovery with 0.61% MgO, from an ore assaying 25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO. To minimize the Clcontent, fresh water of about 0.5 m3 /t was used and the Cl- decreased to about 0.09 %

"Most coal supply contracts include strict limitations on the moisture content of the products. This limitation exists because of calorific, transport cost, and handling reasons. Managing the retention time on product stockpiles to facilitate drainage commonly controls the moisture content in coarser coal products. A large-scale pilot rig has been commissioned to facilitate research in this regard. A stockpile of about 15 tonnes of a typical washed power station feed coal from the South African Witbank coalfield was loaded onto a 6 x 6 m platform on load cells. The platform was shielded from the elements, like rain and wind, and an artificial rain sprinkler system was installed. A variety of rainfall intensities and durations were simulated and the water accumulation and run-off was measured. The material was also sampled for moisture and particle size before and after the series of tests. At the same time, the drainage characteristics of the same coal were determined in smaller scale drainage columns for comparison. Data is presented in this paper on the drainage rates, maximum accumulated moisture, final moisture, and the effect of evaporation. The results showed that for all rainfall patterns tested, drainage ceased after 2 - 3 days, but evaporation continued for at least the time period under investigation, albeit at a low rate. Evaporation contributed to dewatering at rates that depended on wind, temperature and humidity conditions. This caused a slow reduction in moisture content even after the run-off had ceased. The value of the final moisture depended on the coal PSD. It was also found that the intensity and duration of the more intense rainfall events did not significantly affect the maximum water accumulation, with drainage rates equaling the corresponding water addition rates which suggested that water ran off over the surface of the stockpile with limited penetration. During more intense rainfall scenarios, some penetration was apparent."

"This study aims to investigate coarse particle detachment mechanisms (particle diameter > 150 ?m) utilising both experimental and numerical technique. Two mechanisms were studied – (i) interactions of bubbleparticle (BP) aggregate with vortices and (ii) coalescence of bubble-particle aggregates. On the first mechanism, interaction behaviour of coherent vortex structures with a BP aggregate (bubble diameter db = 3 mm, particle diameter dp = 0.3 mm) was studied using a CFD model in the Reynolds number range of 100 to 1000. Effect of surface hydrophobicity on the BP stability was examined using a range of contact angle boundary conditions. To address the second mechanism, interactions of bubble-particle aggregate (db ~ 4 mm, dp ~ 0.4 mm) with both free gas-liquid interface and individual bubbles were investigated using high speed imaging. Both rebound and coalescence outcomes were observed to be responsible for BP instability leading to particle detachment.INTRODUCTIONIt is widely known that flotation process performs excellent mineral recovery for base metal ore particles that are typically in the range of ~ 20 to 150 µm in diameter (Jameson, 2010). More specifically, higher recoveries are usually reported for particles in the size range of ~20 to 70 µm while outside this spectrum, generally the recovery diminishes significantly. It would be highly desirable to improve the recovery of particles at the coarse end of the flotation size range spectrum which has significant economic benefit (Jameson, 2010). However, it is essential that insights to particle detachment phenomenon, the primary impediment in coarse particle flotation caused by the underlying hydrodynamic factors are first obtained at a greater depth.In an ideal quiescent liquid medium, due to inertia, coarse particles deviate substantially from the fluid streamlines and collision efficiency with bubbles decreases which can only be augmented by increasing turbulence level in the medium sufficiently to make random physical contacts with bubbles. Nonetheless, even if successful contacts are made, it is difficult for these large particles to remain attached to bubbles in a turbulent shear flow environment. There are two major mechanisms postulated for particle detachment – interaction of turbulent flow structures (eddies) with BP aggregate and coalescence among surrounding aggregates. Earlier work of Schulze (1982) theorised a vortex acceleration component to characterise turbulence effect on BP aggregate instability in flotation machines. Wang et al. (2015) investigated bubble detachment behaviour from a stationary particle in a nearly homogeneous and isotropic flow field. Using PIV (particle image velocimetry), it was shown that the local maximum energy dissipation rate for the case of bubble detachment was significantly higher than the no detachment case, and was also higher than the critical value for bubble detachment calculated using Schulze’ theory (Schulze, 1982). Later, Wang et al. (2017) also visualised the BP aggregate instability in a cavity flow leading to particle detachment which was attributed to bubble coalescence, bubble surface oscillation and particle deceleration phenomena."

"With the accelerating pace of resource extraction, the quality of resources is decreasing, and the old tailing dams which have served for several decades have become the focus of attention. The secondary recovery of valuable metals in the tailings is an important aspect of the comprehensive utilization of tailings. The average iron content of iron tailing is 8%-12% in China. The research aimed at exploring the low-cost and efficient technical route to recycle eastern tailings of Anshan iron mining area. The purpose of the research is to scientifically find the rational conditions of magnetizing roasting and to provide an increase in recovery and quality of concentrates. The eastern tailings of Anshan mining area belong to high silicon bearing iron tailings, iron mainly exists in form of hematite-limonite with an iron grade of 10.60%, the main component of gangue is SiO2 with a grade of 76.22%. In order to reduce the influence of the tailings on the environment, fluidized magnetizing roasting and low intensity magnetic separation for the eastern tailings of Anshan mining area were carried out to improve the utilization of the tailings. The results indicated that an iron concentrate with an iron grade of 65.30% and a recovery of 85.85% could be obtained under the conditions of gas flow rate 8 m3/h, H2 concentration 50%, fluidized magnetizing roasting temperature at 600? for 20s. Phase analysis, magnetism analysis and XRD analysis on roasted materials indicated that hematite-limonite could be transformed to magnetite during the fluidized roasting, then the effective separation of iron and gangues could be made easily by the weak magnetic separation. INTRODUCTION It is universally acknowledged that the grade of iron ore in China is low, the output rate of iron ore tailings is high, usually more than 60%. At present, the comprehensive utilization rate of iron ore tailings is low in China. Generally, the iron ore tailings are stockpiled in the tailings dam. The tailing dams not only occupy a lot of land, but also takes a lot of money to construct and maintain. In addition, the noxious substances in the tailings, such as residual flotation agents and heavy metals, have a severe impact on the ecological environment. There is little doubt that tailing dams have a visual impact on the environment due to their regular geometric shape. Iron tailings can be treated as compound mineral, which is an important component of comprehensive utilization of mineral resources, and is an has been widely concerned. Lots of scholars have done a large amount of research work on a large number of iron ore tailings. Since the iron mineral crystal grain size is fine and the iron grade is low, the iron tailings have failed to achieve good selection criteria."

Stone coal containing vanadium is an important vanadium resource in China. Roasting and oxidation of vanadium is the foundation for extracting vanadium from stone coal. This article takes stone coal vanadium ore in Tongshan of Hubei Province as research target to conduct oxidation roasting test on it by using a self-developed low-sodium compound additive and a new optimized technology. Firstly, use potentiometric titration, X diffraction, energy spectrum and electron probe to study valence change, occurrence and phase transition of vanadium during oxidation roasting process. On this basis, primary work is done on oxidation kinetics of vanadium by exploring the steps that control reaction rate during vanadium oxidation process and determining the related dynamic parameter ? apparent activation energy. The study shows that occurrence of vanadium in stone coal of Tongshan is mainly in illite, and that the result of phase transition in roasting process is disappearance of illite containing vanadium, formation of soluble vanadate and potassium feldspar, albite. It further demonstrates that oxidation process of vanadium is step by step (V(?)? V(?)? V(?)), and its oxidation reaction is controlled by diffusion kinetics whose dynamic apparent activation energy is E1=81.19kJ.mol-1.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to produce titanium-rich material from Panzhihua ilmenite. The results showed preoxidation with sodium salt additive especially for Na2B4O7 signif- icantly advance the reduction of iron in Panzhihua ilmenite. Acceleration mechanism of preoxidation with Na2B4O7 has been studied here. The maximum metallization of iron 92% can be obtained under conditions of preoxidation at 850? for 30 min and subsequent reduction at 1100? for 150 min. The rusting separation technique to reduced ilmenite has been further studied, obtaining titanium-rich product with TiO2 over 82% and the recovery of TiO2 above 97%.

The effective removal of heavy metals from aqueous wastes is among the most important issues for many industrialized countries, How ever biosorption, i.e. the uptake of heavy metals by non- living biomass, has gained increased credibility during recent years. Biosorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution, on pretreated and immobilized Aspergillus niger was investigated in a batch and countinuous reactors. A.niger biomass pretreated by boiling in 0.5 N NaOH solution for 15 min, exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal capacity than autoclaved biomass. The optimum adsorption pH value observed for Cr(VI) ions was 2. The Cr(VI)removal rate increased with a decrease in pH. The influence of contact time, pH, Cr(VI) concentration, biomass concentration and temperature on Cr(VI) removal were also evaluated. Biosorption of Cr(VI) on pretreated biomass followed the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models.In this study A.niger biomass was immobilized in Na-alginate matrix. The biomass beads packed in a column were able to remove metal ions.In this study we used two different flow rate in a column, 1.5 mL/min and 3 mL/min.The breakthrough data obtained for Cr(VI) was adequately by the Thomas and Yan models and the adsorption capacity of the biomass was found to less than the adsorption capacity obtaind in the batch study. When the beads containing biomass become saturated with metal ions, the adsorbed metals were eluted using 0.5 N NaOH solution. Therefor nearly 90% of Cr(VI) was desorbed by NaOH solution.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. Jig is a kind of conventional and old gravity concentration equipment, which is mainly used in the preconcentration of medium particle fractions of low-grade nonferrous metal ore. In the past ten years, studies on jigs have made a great progress on separation of coarse and fine particle fractions. At the same time, pneumatic jigs have been widely used in processing of nonferrous metal ore. In this paper, pilot test study and commercial operation for several kinds of jigs used in Dachang con-centrator has been introduced. Dachang mining area of GuangXi province is rich in mineral resources, where many minerals exhibit various complex properties. Many elements such as Sn, Pb, Sb, Zn, S, As, Cu, In, Ag, Gd, Ag, Ga, etc, were found in the run-of-mine ore (ROM). At present, Dachang concentrator produces tin concentrate, lead-antimony concentrate and zinc concentrate. Other valuable elements get enriched and recovered in above concentrates. Dachang Mine with a mining operation history more than sixty years will end its mission on the rich ore resource exploitation. At present, low grade ores are porcessed in the concentrator, and the concentrator begins to run at a loss upon processing the low-grade and refractory ore. Heavy medium cyclones were used in the concentrator for processing 20-4mm fraction, Gongge jigs for 4-2mm fraction, and cone concentrator combined with spiral concentrator to discard the tailings of -2mm fractions. In order to minimize overgrinding, table flotation was used to recover some liberated cassiterites in a complex processing technology. Therefore, the concentrator is difficult to manage. Many years studies have shown that heavy medium cyclones and spiral concentra-tors can be replaced by sawtooth shaped wave jigs to discard 50% tailings to improve the grade of feed. And the feed was divided into rich one and poor one to minimize overgrinding of valuable cassiterites with different grinding mills. In this case, the recovery of the valuable minerals can get improved and the flowsheet was simplified. Moreover, the concentrator begins to make profit with reduction of cost. At the same time, pollution in the concentrator gets reduced and the working condition gets improved too. Sawtooth shaped wave jig was used in Changpo concentrator for replacement of cone separators and spiral concentrators to discard the tailings of -4mm fraction, and the yield of discarded tailings got improved from 30% to 50%. Grades of tin, lead and zinc in the tailings are lowered from 0.15%, 0.12%, 0.7% to 0.06%, 0.05%, 0.4% respectively, with a loss reduction of tin, lead and zinc from11%, 9%, 10% to 7.5%, 6%, 5% respectively, corresponding to the increasement of recovery of tin, lead, zinc from 52%, 50%, 55% to 56%, 56%, 62% respectively. Cost of the concentrator for processing one-ton ROM was therefore dropped from RMB155.28 to RMB119.74. Changpo concentrator lost RMB2.5 million in 2003, but it made a profit of RMB0.92 million in 2006 after the innovations. Batac jig was used in Tongkeng concentrator to discard the coarse tailings at 20-4mm, with a discarded yield of 35%, and the grades of valuable minerals got improved with a recovery above 95% for tin, lead-antimony and zinc.
