"Slags from smelting of copper concentrates contains from 1 to 15% of copper. Copper is present in the form of copper or copper matte inclusions of size from 2 to 1000 micro, and as dissolved cuprous oxide. Removal of the copper requires the slag reduction, primarily reduction of magnetite and co-reduction of cuprous oxide. Thus, the kinetics of the slag reduction play an important role in copper recovery. Instantaneously, at the contact of carbon and a slag the gaseous film is formed. The magnetite and cuprous oxide reduction is going through a gaseous film, separating the slag and carbon of a coke or electrodes. The thickness of a gaseous film grows to a critical value and gas bubbles, containing CO and CO2, are created and rise up in the slag. Results of measurements of kinetic of the slag reduction with graphite showed high value of activation energy, close to the value of activation energy of Boudouard reaction. Strong temperature dependence of the reaction rate points out the thermal instability of the reacting system. It was found that the slowest process in the reduction stages determines the loop of CO and CO2 transfer and magnetite diffusion to the slag/gas film boundary. Strongly endothermic Boudouard reaction seems to cause thermal instability on the reaction surface. So, heat transfer to the reaction surface is very important. Due to low thermal conductivity of a slag the convection dominates in the heat transfer. So, any slag stirring accelerates the rate of reduction and coalescence of metallic copper or copper matte inclusions."

Early evaluations of Pasquia Hills kerogen shale deposits by Geological Survey of Canada, Saskatchewan Geological Survey, Manitoba Energy and Mines and Sun Oil Company, using modified Fischer Assay, Rock-Eval and other techniques, estimated recoverable reserves of about 2.6x109 barrels of oil in areas favorable for strip-mining; each metric ton of ore was determined to yield about 30 L to 50 L of shale oil remarkably high in aromatic compounds. Western Petrochemical Corp. (WPC) is holding two Oil Shale Exploration Permits covering about 76,635 hectares in the Pasquia Hills Region of eastern Saskatchewan and conducting a 15-corehole drilling program to determine stratigraphic correlation on both first and second white specks kerogen shale. In this program, correlation will be established between oil yield and oil quality, using different retort techniques, including modified Fischer Assay, steam retort and Rock-Eval. Results will lead to further resource evaluation and to a preliminary engineering design for a shale processing plant, including selection of retort process, upgrading of shale oil to petrochemical feedstock, hydrogen management, energy balance and evaluation of environmental impact.

The Canadian non-ferrous mining and metallurgical industry has made great strides in environmental protection during the past half century. The path taken by the copper-nickel smelting industry in reaching today’s level is traced in this paper. Following the practice at early copper smelters in Wales and in the US, Canadian smelters originally used tall stacks to disperse furnace of-gases. This was the normal mode of operation and was accepted by society and by Government. Gradually, Government regulations required fixation of sulphur dioxide emissions and Canadian companies responded with significant technical developments to achieve this result. The initial development in Canada of the first new technologies such as the Cominco Flash Suspension Roaster and the Freeman Flash Smelting Process - both representing early versions of the modern established flash smelting technologies - and then later technologies such as the Inco Flash Smelting Process and the Noranda Process, both of which continue to this day, are discussed in this paper in terms of their contributions to the development of environmentally friendly plants. The evolution of these and other technologies is also discussed. Some comments regarding how the industry will face the future are also included.

"Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. The Gold Fields group has operations in South Africa, Ghana and Australia, along with numerous exploration sites and advanced projects in several other countries. Today, in Australia, it is increasingly common to see agreements between Indigenous peoples and resource companies being achieved generally as Indigenous Land Use Agreements or agreements pursuant to the ?right to negotiation? process under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth). Despite progress in this area, resource development on Indigenous lands is not without its challenges for both the resource proponents and the Indigenous parties. History demonstrates that resource development on Indigenous lands has produced struggles between the traditional owners of the land and the resource proponents. In Australia their relationship is generally defined by issues of access to land and assuring continued access to the land for the life of the project. In this context, divisions in Indigenous communities often emerge. The proposed resource project can have the effect of polarising members of an Indigenous community. It may be regarded by some traditional land owners as an advantageous opportunity for the community and by others as a hazard to country and culture. The process of agreement making has proved not only a test for the Indigenous community but also for the resource proponent. In this paper we undertake a contemporary case study of a proposed Australian resource related-development project on Indigenous lands. This project involved a multi-billion gas hub precinct proposed at James Price Point in the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The James Price Point proposal produced a litany of challenges for all parties. The traditional owners faced fundamental social and human rights issues, including a minority opposition to the project, the project's potential cultural heritage impact, the threat of compulsory acquisition of their native title interest by a State government due to an initial failure to settle an agreement, a fracture of their unsettled land claim and a minority rejection of the agreement ultimately reached. Additionally, the ?green? lobby also rejected the proposed gas hub on environmental grounds bringing the green lobby into direct conflict with both the traditional owners in favour of the project and the resource proponent. Ultimately, Woodside announced its decision not to proceed with the proposed gas precinct at James Price Point, in April 2013. In this paper we analyse the complexity of the James Price Point gas hub negotiations with the traditional owners which resulted in an Agreement that promised to deliver substantial benefits for the Indigenous communities. We question why such a favourable and beneficial agreement for the Indigenous community also produced the plethora of challenges and concerns and we consider how future negotiation processes could be better structured to avoid the difficulties that have confronted Indigenous land owners and resource proponents alike.

"In contrast with the well-publicized Pittsburgh coal, and the Everglades of Florida, most coal-forming swamps of Cretaceous time in western North America occupied relatively limited areas. They formed in areas of irregular subsidence, bounded by the changing levee systems of meandering streams. Coke quality is determined by the physical and chemical behaviour of the vitrain during thermal decomposition. Vitrain is at least in part a colloidal substance, originally containing large proportions of water; its formation and survival depend on maintaining a shallow cover of stagnant water up to the time of burial. Heat from swamp fires or subaerial dyhydration could destroy it or impair its quality. Observed patterns suggest that the metamorphism is almost entirely thermal, and that there is little relation to tectonic stresses, or loading. These coals had probably achieved essentially their present rank prior to deformation. Evidence of frictional heating along the thrust planes is minimal or absent. Normally, coal beds are aquifers. Oxygen carried into the subsurface becomes available and reacts with the vitrain to destroy its natural thermoplastic properties. The tolerance of oxygen without loss of thermoplasticity is inversely related to the volatile content. Significant lateral variations of coal thickness are common and sometimes occur in short distances. In deformed areas these thickness changes are more commonly due to differential tectonic stress rather than to original thicknesses of coal. Locally, coal is known to have flowed into cavities, or fractures. These principals are discussed in relation to coal deposits of western Alberta and eastern British Columbia."

The dissolution of chalcopyrite has received a significant amount of attention. The predominant paradigm of investigation is that its rate of dissolution is limited or passivated by a surface coating or film of material. The common candidates for such a passivating coating are numerous: polysulfide coating, metal deficient layers, copper sulfide coating, bornite layers, jarosite precipitates, and elemental sulfur films. While this line of explanation, that is, the explanation based on passivation, seems to have won some form of consensus with researchers, there is another explanation for the results that can account for all the results observed. Crundwell (1988) proposed that the solid state properties of chalcopyrite, in particular, the semiconducting properties, are responsible for the observed behaviour of chalcopyrite. The purpose of this paper is to outline the semiconductor mechanism of dissolution, and to show how this mechanism accounts for all the observed phenomena recently reported in the literature. IN 1935, Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, initiated an enlarged programme of ventilation. In the mine, surveys were made from time to time by the geological staff, and improvements in ventilation were effected to accord with progress in mining as greater depth was attained. In the summer of 1938 an engineer was trained in the technique of dust sampling. Instruments and equipment for this purpose, such as konimeter, microscope, furnace, etc., were purchased, and a suitable office, equipped with laboratory facilities, was provided. The full time of the engineer is devoted to ventilation and dust control. On surface, in the mill crushing-plant and in the assay office and sample crushing room, an elaborate arrangement of hoods and exhaust systems has been installed to eliminate the dust. These installations, however, are not described in the present paper, which deals only with an extensive programme of underground ventilation as a method of coping with high dust concentrations, increasing temperatures and high humilities.

"The property owned by the Lamaque Mining Company comprises a group of forty-four claims and fractions occupying an area of about 2,458 acres, in west-central Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is on ,the outskirts of the towns of Bourlamaque and Val d'Or, about 70 miles east of Noranda, near the eastern end of the belt of greenstones of Keewatin and Timiskaming age that extends eastward through Kirkland Lake into northwestern Quebec, terminating in Haig and Jurie townships 40 miles to the east.The claims on which the orebodies occur were first staked in 1923; No. 3 vein was discovered the following year. The original discovery was made by R. Clark in 1923. This was a small quartz vein containing a pocket of coarse gold on the north side of a hill near the northwestern corner of block 3. It is said that all the gold was removed in one shot in blasting into the vein; elsewhere it was barren. A picket line was then run west along the strike of the vein, which occupied a narrow shear zone, and about 2,000 feet west, in prospecting on either side of the picket line, a large boulder of quartz and tourmaline containing visible gold was found. This led to more intensive prospecting by trenching in the vicinity with the result that the No. 3, or 'float' vein, about 250 feet north of the boulder, was found. Due to low ground this vein was exposed in only one trench. The only other important vein found on the surface was the No. 1, or H, vein, which was exposed in several places by stripping and trenching, but it did not carry appreciable amounts of gold."

"In 1974, Copperfields Mining Corporation and Soquem formed a new company, Niobec Inc, to bring the niobium deposit of the St-Honore carbonatite into production.St-Honore is located in the Saguenay area, near the cities of Chicoutimi and Arvida, and about one hundred and forty (140) miles north of Quebec. The discovery of the carbonatite complex was made in the fall of 1967 as a result of an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. The detailed exploration of the carbonatite indicated two niobium-bearing formations besides the original discovery of a rare earths zone. During the following years, the niobium formations were defined by diamond drilling and a decline was driven down to obtain adequate samples for metallurgical evaluation. In 1974, after seven hundred (700) bench scale tests, eleven (11) months of pilot plant 2nd a worldwide market research, a joint decision was made to initiate the development of a fifteen hundred (1500) T.P.D. mine and mill, under the management of Teck Corporation. The construction of the facilities were completed in early 1976 both on time and within budget. Niobec is now the only north american and the world second largest producer of Niobium concentrate.The process used at Niobec was developed from the pilot plant programs and later modified by the mill personnel. A simplified flowsheet for this process is shown on the slide. Briefly, run of mine ore is crushed to minus 5/8"" and fed to a rod mill, ball mill, and screens circuit where the ore is ground to 92% passing 65 mesh. The ore is deslimed in two stages of cycloning, and the final cyclone overflow at 85% minus 11 microns goes to waste. The cyclone underflow is conditioned prior to flotation of a carbonate-apatite concentrate. This concentrate is cleaned twice and then pumped to tails. The carbonate rougher and cleaner tails are cycloned in two stages to change the process; water and then sent to the pyrochlore rougher flotation. The rougher concentrate is cleaned five times. This is followed by pyrite flotation to remove sulfur, leaching with hydrochloric acid to remove phosphorus and dyed to less than 0.1% moisture before being sent to packaging."

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. "The Thompson Mill processes ores from the Thompson and Birchtree Mines. While the Thompson ore has very little magnesium containing gangue, the Birchtree orebody consists of veins of massive sulphide in a rock matrix that contains a high proportion of magnesium silicate minerals. A significant fraction of the magnesium is floatable, which lead to MgO levels varying from 3-11 wt% in the Birchtree concentrate. The magnesium in the concentrate causes a higher operating temperature in the smelter, reducing furnace life.Birchtree ore represented 20-30% of the mill ore receipts prior to October 2003. Since then the fraction of Birchtree ore has increased to 50%. A reduction of the MgO in concentrate to less than 3% in the total mill concentrate was required to allow safe and economic smelter operation.In October of 2002 a miniplant was set up to simulate the Birchtree plant circuit. Several flow sheet modifications were tested that led to a proposal for a circuit having increased cleaning capacity for the scavenger concentrate and a recleaner on this concentrate. Addition of CMC in rougher cleaner feed was also found to be required. The solution was confirmed through pilot plant testing in the mill in December of 2002. A full-scale installation was designed, engineered, and installed between February and September of 2003 with commissioning in September and October of 2003. Target metallurgy was achieved one week after start-up on slurry to coincide with the Birchtree Mine tonnage increase. This paper highlights the development, design and commissioning stages of the project.The new MgO rejection circuit has successfully allowed the processing of Birchtree ores producing concentrate consistently below 3% MgO. In addition, the new circuit increased overall nickel recovery in the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson Nickel Belt located approximately 700km north of Winnipeg was discovered in the early 1950’s. Inco first produced nickel from the area in 1960. Over the years the mill has processed several ores from different ore bodies in the area. Currently the Thompson Mill processes two significantly different ores from two mines, Thompson and Birchtree. The Thompson ore is a massive sulphide orebody hosted in schist, containing feldspars, quartz and biotite. Thompson Ore is characterized by high nickel recoveries and clean, low MgO containing concentrates (<2.5% MgO). The Birchtree ore is ultramafic and contains a high percentage of Mg-silicates such as serpentine, chlorite, biotite, amphiboles and talc. Some of these Mg-silicates report to the nickel concentrate and prior to commissioning of the MgO rejection circuit the Birchtree nickel concentrate typically contained 5-8% MgO"

Introduction The San Antonio mine is on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg and 120 miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. Since production was started in 1932, about 2,000,000 tons of ore have been mined. Currently in progress is an extensive development programme which involves 11,500 feet of crosscuts, 3,800 feet of raises, 1,753 feet of shaft sinking, and 160,000 cubic feet of slashing, all in footwall waste rock. It is the purpose of this .paper to indicate the necessity for this work and to describe the methods employed to carry it out. Where unknown factors are as prevalent as they are in the average Canadian gold mine, a definite answer cannot be given as to what is the most economical and efficient system for mining dipping deposits. At San Antonio, the host rock for the orebodies, locally termed basalt, occurs as a sill some hundreds of feet in width and dipping at approximately 45 degrees from surface to an unknown depth. It may be assumed that it continues well below the lowest depth established to date by diamond drilling. At present, a vertical winze (No. 3 winze) hoists the ore from the 2,360-foot level to the 1,600-foot level, on which it is hauled about 900 feet to No. 3 shaft, also vertical, and there hoisted to the mill bins on surface. To maintain ore reserves at a five-year figure, at full production, additional deep exploration was required immediately. It was decided to sink No. 4 winze, a vertical opening of the same size as the other operating shafts, to provide ten additional levels (17 to 26) at 150-foot intervals, with additional depth to allow for an underground crusher installation and usual loading-pocket facilities for three-ton skip-hoisting. The winze was bottomed at 1,753 feet below the collar, at a depth of 4,117 feet below surface, and is the deepest man-sized opening in Manitoba.

THE PRESIDENT (DR. C. B. KINGSTON, member C.l.M.M.) expressed regret that neither of the authors of the paper was able to be present to submit the paper in person. In their absence, it would be introduced formally from the Chair. It was a clear, straightforward account of a fine piece of shaft sinking, cleverly conceived and boldly executed. He referred briefly to the distribution and nature of the Dome ore-bodies and stated that, for both the miner and the metallurgist, the mine had provided a wide range of problems of unusual interest. Discussion on the paper was then invited. MR. THOMAS PRYOR said the paper was most opportune, because the subject of internal shafts did not appear to be fully treated in current mining literature. Many members were not familiar with Canadian gold deposits and it would be of interest if the authors could give a brief description of the location of the ere deposits of the Dome mine. This information would doubtless explain why a new internal shaft was needed in a position which required such an exceptionally long cross-cut to connect it to the main hoisting shaft to surface. It would also add to the value of the paper if the authors would give some idea of the duty expected of the new shaft in terms of tons of rock hoisted and of trips engaged in the transport of men and materials, and it would be helpful if figures could be given of the total capital cost of the hoists and subsidiary excavations at the shaft top, and of the cost per foot for sinking and lining the shaft below the collar. Turning to details of the paper, one was favourably impressed by the care given to the provision of a good travelling way for men in the main cross-cut, as shown in Figure 1. It was by no means always that one could walk in comfort and safety in a working where there was a 20-in. ventilating pipe in the roof.

"Breakwater Tunisia S.A.’s Bougrine mine is located in a semi-arid region of Tunisia characterized with Triassic salt domes. Due to extensive agricultural land-use in the mine area, a zero-discharge tailings facility design and high water recycling rates to the concentrator were chosen to minimize the environmental impact to the surrounding area. The process water supply has an accumulation of naturally occurring salts due to high evaporation rates and the need to recycle 70% of the process water. The elevated salt content of the process water had an adverse effect on the efficiency of the flotation reagents, which led to the production of lower quality zinc concentrate.The impact of the water salinity on the zinc concentrate quality was documented by extensive laboratory testing. A feasibility study was prepared and a decision was made to install a reverse osmosis plant for desalination of the process water. A plant was constructed during 2000 which currently supplies up to 85 m3/hr of de-mineralized water, equal to approximately 45% of the total process water requirement. The salinity of the process water decreased from about ten to twelve grams per litre before installation to less than three grams per litre. Together with minor modifications to the concentrator circuit, Breakwater Tunisia has increased the zinc concentrate grade from 50% zinc to 55% zinc without compromising the zinc recovery rate of approximately 84%.This paper discusses the successful installation of a reverse osmosis desalination plant that allowed Breakwater Tunisia to improve the grade of the Bougrine mine zinc concentrate and thus increase the net smelter return.INTRODUCTIONBreakwater Resources Ltd., through a wholly owned subsidiary, Breakwater Tunisia S.A., acquired the Bougrine underground mine and related assets in September 1997. During the winter of 1997/1998, the company rehabilitated the mining equipment, modified the concentrator circuit, developed a new mine ventilation system and prepared a new mining production program. The mine was reopened on May 2, 1998 and was in commercial production as of June 1, 1998."

A thermohydrodynamic computer code has been used to simulate dust explosions. For sulphide dusts, the thermodynamic predictions are used to investigate the effect of dust concentration, mineral content and inert materials as well as the quantity of sulphur dioxide produced. It was found that the amount of oxygen available for the explosion is very important and that the dust concentration which gives maximum explosion pressures is obtained at zero or slightly negative oxygen balance values. The sulphide minerals were found to have the following explosibility sequence: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, covellite, chalcocite and galena, which is in agreement with mine experience. The results show that theoretical calculations can be used to predict explosion pressures and toxic gases produced by a dust explosion and therefore they can assist in the design of protective measures .

"To overcome the problem that scoroditeis not stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, we proposed and investigated a synthesis method of scorodite coated in-situ with hydrated ferric oxide in the Fe(II)-As(V)-H2O system at the initial Fe(III)/As(V) molar ratios larger than 1.0.The synthesis was carried out at 90?,pH 1.5 under atmospheric pressure. During the synthesis, oxygen gas was conducted and bubbled into the system to oxidize Fe(II) ions into Fe(III)ions, and Na2CO3aqueous solution as neutralizing agent was added controllably into the system for keeping the pH constant at 1.5. In this study, three samples of scorodite were synthesized at the controlled initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratios of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0, respectively. The characterizations of the samples by HRTEM, TEM/EDX, and chemical composition indicated that the particle surfaces of scorodite synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 2.0 and 3.0 were coated in situ by a film of hydrated ferric oxide with the thickness of several nanometers, while the sample synthesized at the initial Fe(II)/As(V) molar ratio of 1.0 was uncoated scorodite. The TCLP and long-term leaching for the toxicity characteristic of the samples showed that scorodite coated in situ with hydrated ferric oxide was stable in a wide pH range from 3.0 to 10.0, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions less than 1.0mg/L. Nevertheless, uncoated scorodite was unstable under the conditions from weak acidity to alkalinity, with the arsenic concentrations in the leaching solutions larger than 5.0 mg/L.INTRODUCTIONArsenic pollution is a challenge for environment and health and has been an important issue for scientists (Hopkin, 1989).Arsenicis commonly associated with ores or concentrates of nonferrous metals, mainly as independent arsenic bearing minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS), tennantite(Cu12As4S13), enargite (Cu3AsS4), cobaltite (CoAsS), and gersdorffite (NiAsS), realgar (As2S2), orpiment(As2S3), etc.(Matschullat, 2000; Mandal & Suzuki, 2002; Long & Peng, 2012). In the nonferrous metallurgical processes, arsenic is enriched mainly in such arsenic bearing materials as various flue dusts, residues, and anode slimes, which results in the accumulation of arsenic in the system owing to the circulation of those arsenic-bearing materials back to the system and the pollution to the environment (Harris, et al, 2003).In addition, the utilization of arsenic is limited and has been decreasing owing to its toxicity and carcinogenicity. Therefore, arsenic has to be removed from those arsenic-bearing materials and discarded safely (Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Monhemius & Swash, 1999; Drahota & Fillippi, 2009).In this case, how to immobilize arsenic has become a difficult problem which must be solved. Among the methods of immobilizing arsenic which have been proposed and investigated, immobilizing arsenic into a stable mineral to fix it, has been realized as a promising method and becomes a research focus(Dutrizac et al, 1987; Dutrizac & Jambor, 1988; Demopoulos et al, 1995; Fujita et al, 2008a; 2008b).Scorodite has been known as one of the best minerals for immobilizing arsenic, owing to its high stability under weak acidic condition, the arsenic content as high as 32wt%,and good crystallinity benefiting the separation of solid to liquid(Daivid et al, 1999; Zhu & Merkel, 2001). Scorodite can be synthesized from arsenic containing solutions under both hydrothermal and atmospheric conditions, and a lot of work has been done on the synthesis of scorodite and its leaching stability characterization (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Gomez et al, 2011).Two plants for the immobilization of arsenic as scorodite have been putin to operation in Chile and Japan, respectively (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1999; Amir et al, 2016)."
