The prospect of utilisation of phosphate ores which contain high P2O5 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilisation of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.   This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5.3H2O and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H2O. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

With a brownfield project comes control integration challenges. The Khumani Iron Ore Mine’s second phase expansion posed a number of challenges as there was substantial brownfields work conducted. The fi rst phase was the compilation of the modifi ed process functional specifications for the project. The second phase was an audit on all of the operational sequences; this included a comparison between the SCADA sequences, sequential starts analysed from the historian data (with the potential for improvements made by the plant operators in manual start-ups) and what was proposed in the process functional specification. Differences, inclusions and missing equipment were highlighted. The third phase was the comparison of interlocking and control in the PLC with the updated process functional specification; this was done during the coding process. Running parallel to the three phases was the SCADA integration; tie-ins to the existing SCADA were conducted on maintenance days and shutdowns, in many instances with ‘dummy’ equipment to get the operational staff accustomed to the new interface. This paper details each of the phases, the success of this methodology as well as the pitfalls experienced.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Gold mines produce unique water treatment requirements. This paper focuses on case studies of innovative processes used for treatment of water resulting from gold mining and processing. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from an Australian gold mine, Bendigo Mining, as well as treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Gold mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Gold mining and processing often accumulate wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and odorous sulfates. Environmental discharge requirements as well as community needs for water drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Treatment of gold mine water can require processes including oxidation, pH adjustment, coagulation, flocculation, clarification, further oxidation/adsorption of specific metals such as manganese, filtration, salt reduction utilising reverse osmosis, brine minimisation and other innovative technologies. These processes are discussed through the case studies with examination of the specific treatment process that is required. This paper uses real case studies of gold water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is toward explaining innovative processes where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the local community.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

Interest in the tantalum-niobium minerals has been greatly stimulated in Western Australia by the fact that these rare minerals occur at numerous localities in that State, and in the adjoining parts of the Northern Territory, sometimes in mineable concentrations, as at Wodgina and Greenbushes. A large proportion of the world's tantalum comes from these deposits. The late Dr. E. S. Simpson, in particular, made an extensive study of the chemistry and mineralogy of these minerals, and the following observations are based upon the examination of specimens which he and Mr. H. Bawley, Government Mineralogist of Western Australia, have submitted to me for examination from time to time. The fact that so many of the specimens have been analysed provides a unique opportunity for the interpretation of the phenomena observed in the polished sections.TANTALITE-COLUMBITE SERIESIt has long been considered, on the basis of crystallographic form, chemical analyses, and specific gravity measurements, that ferrotantalite (FeO. Taz05), manganotantalite (MnO. Taz05)' ferrocolumbite (FeO. Nbz0 5), and manganocolumbite (MnO. Nbz0 5 ) form a complete isomorphous solid solution series (Simpson, 1937) and this is confirmed by study of polished sections of these minerals, Pehrman (1929) examined a series of five analysed specimens with Nbz0 5 contents as follows:-

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. The Round Hill gold-scheelite deposit is located three kilometres from Macraes Flat and approximately 60 kilometres due north of Dunedin, New Zealand. A mining feasibility study is currently being undertaken on the deposit by BHP Minerals (New Zealand) Limited, who are the managers and operators of a Joint Venture with Home Reef Mining Limited. BHP has a 70 per cent equity in the project area.

The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

The Grasberg block cave rail haulage system will be located in the Grasberg mining district on the island of Papua, Indonesia at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level. It will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing systems. The design entails approximately 23 km of rail (ballasted and embedded track), over 120 ore chutes to deliver ore to the muck cars and three unloading stations to deliver ore to the crushers. The rail haulage system is a closed-loop system entirely within the underground mining complex.The GBC rail haulage project will be a substantial operation. Trains consist of 11–12 bottom-dump 20 m3 muck cars driven by a 40 t electric locomotive, about 400 t per trainload. Approximately 12 trains and one spare are required to maintain full production at 160 000 t/d. All rail installations will be 1435 mm (standard) gauge with AS60 steel.The rail system is designed to operate in full automated mode, including chute loading, hauling and dumping. The operation will be controlled from a surface control room.The rail haulage project has been divided into five stages, which will be brought online over the course of ten years. Current development and construction are focused on Stage 1 for initial production that will occur beginning in late 2017. This stage includes 24 chutes in three chute galleries, one unloading station, workshop areas and almost 7 km of track (3 km of embedded and 4 km of ballast).This paper describes the key components of the rail haulage system and reports on the current status of development and construction of the system. Some of the problems associated with drill core evaluation of alluvial tin deposits and correlation with plant-scale recovery are discussed. Panning churn-drill cores on site tends to undervalue such deposits because of failure to recover completely all the available liberated cassiterite, and secondary gravity processing may also fail to give an accurate determination of potentially recoverable tin. However, by using a combination of heavy liquid separations, x-ray fluorescence analysis for Sn, and normal methods of reflected and transmitted polarized light microscopy, a quantitative assessment of alluvial material can be carried- out. The information obtained may include the liberation characteristics and distribution with size of the cassiterite, the nature and quantities of the various gangue minerals, and the amount of potentially recoverable cassiterite in the material as compared with the amount locked with light gangue minerals and hence difficult or impossible to recover. In addition, an analysis of the efficiencies of the various gravity processes, such as panning, jigging, and tabling, used to determine "recoverable tin" in the alluvial material, can be carried out. A detailed example is given of this type of investigation, in which an assessment was made of a churn-drill core from Uncia, Bolivia.

The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 µm in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

Geological modelling has historically been done using sectional interpretation of paper sections or on a computer screen. Boundaries of geological units or grade shells are interpreted by a geologist section by section and the shapes are drawn onto paper to be digitised later or they are directly digitised into a computer. This approach is referred to as explicit modelling. Such methods are time consuming if there are many section lines or boundaries to be interpreted. The number of metres drilled and resource models made is increasing each year and it will be difficult to keep up using explicit modelling methods. Alternatively, it is possible to use information carried in the drill holes, known geological relationships and point estimation methods in two or three dimensions, to create similar geology boundaries, while eliminating or at least greatly reducing the need to manually interpret and digitise detailed sectional interpretations. Such methods are referred to as implicit modelling and are available in a number of software packages. Implicit modelling approaches have been used in iron ore and found to significantly reduce the time needed for modelling while producing results that are comparable or better than standard explicit modelling approaches. A number of case studies have been undertaken of implicit modelling in iron ore deposits. Stratigraphic surfaces of bedded, folded and faulted iron ore deposits have been modelled in various deposits by Leapfrog Geo, GOCAD (with SKUA) and Vulcan Integrated Stratigraphic Modelling. Leapfrog Mining was used to model iron grade shells at particular cut-off grades. The modelled surfaces are of a high standard equivalent to those that could be produced by traditional explicit modelling but the time required by the implicit methods is far less. Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.
