As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

Many mining companies aim to integrate sustainability principles into their new projects. There is an intention for improvement, but frequently this results in little more than 'business as usual' projects that retrospectively categorise controls for environmental and social risks as sustainability initiatives as part of a public relations exercise. The successful implementation of sustainability requires a change of mind-set and behaviours at an organisational and personal level. In addition, sustainability incorporates a very wide range of interests and technical disciplines. One of the key challenges is in understanding how and when to pull these diverse threads together within a project or organisational process. This paper will explore a number of themes: What does it mean to implement a project in accordance with sustainability principles? How far beyond 'business as usual' is it reasonable to go, and what is the business case for this? Why do the intentions for sustainability sometimes fail and how can we prevent this happening in future? People are instrumental in delivering sustainability; how do we embed sustainability thinking into their behaviours and decision-making? The approaches that have been taken to integrating sustainability in design; what has and has not worked and some of the barriers to integrating sustainability into design? The authors will discuss these themes drawing on case studies from URS' experience in integrating sustainability into large projects. The authors will discuss the need for: a strategic approach which provides a simple framework for tactical decision-making and the consequences of taking tactical decisions in the absence of this framework, alignment of the project team and promotion of a culture of innovation, a shift from a risk/compliance mentality to an opportunity identification mindset, and a systematic approach to integrating sustainability into project design processes.

Pongkor Gold Mines is one of seven units of production owned by PT Aneka Tambang (State owned mining company). The mine is located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia. It is in the Bogor District and approximately 110 kilometres to the south of capital Jakarta. It is located in very steep hilly terrain intersected by many river valleys and the mine site is approximately 500 metres above mean sea level (see Figures 1 and 2 - Mine location map and picture)

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

The initiation of cast Pentolite primers by detonating cord has been examined by the combination of two different experimental techniques with computer simulation by the finite element hydrodynamic code DYNA2D. In the first type of experiment, the cord/primer system was placed in a water aquarium, and photographed using a high-speed image converter camera. This highlighted the emergence of the detonation front through the primer surface and the generation of shock waves in the surround- ings. Numerical simulation was used to interpret the experimental record, establishing where the cord had induced buildup to detonation inside the primer. The second experiment used the plate dent test, where the primer was placed in contact with a block of metal (here aluminium), with the resul- tant dent in the metal surface being a measure of primer output. Detailed numerical simulation of this test confirmed that the observed dent was caused by the development of a complex series of shock waves inside the Primer.

Seismic methods have become common for the detection of low-throw faults ahead of underground coal mining. Surface seismic methods cannot theoretically be used where dykes occur, because seismic waves transmit from the surface down to the seams, and reflect back to the surface. Consequently, where sub-vertical structure such as dykes occurs, the surface seismic method fails.The ability of seismic methods to image dykes depends on the geometry used, the dyke thickness and the seismic wave propagation mode in relation to dyke composition and internal structure. Surface seismic methods find it difficult to distinguish between faults/fractures and very thin dykes (1-2m in thickness) when the dyke's thickness is less than the seismic wavelength. Consequently, borehole seismic methods have to be used to detect the presence of such thin dykes.

Joint ventures exist as a means of sharing risks and obeying regulations. An unincorporated joint venture allows a company to take a share only of a project yet allows that company to treat such share as though it were an integral part of the company. The nature of the risks inherent in many ventures is described and comparisons made with alternative corporate vehicles. Different procedures for managing joint ventures are also reviewed and the types of problem encountered in establishing and operating joint ventures are discussed. The basic characteristics of successful joint ventures, in Australia, are listed and a conclusion reached that, despite its difficulties, the joint venture will continue to proliferate as a corporate vehicle for project development.

Sizing is fundamental technology for each step of ironmaking process. The progress of sizing technology has greatly contributed to the development of ironmaking technology. As the purposes of ironmaking operations diversified particularly since the oil crisis of 1973, the sizing technology made new advance- ment, as represented by pulverization of ser- pentine, dezincification and classification of secondary blast furnace dust, pulverized coal injection, size-segregated sinter charging and a coal preparation control process. These techniques are mostly characterized by the fine grinding of a given type of mineral or coal to heighten the degree of reaction con- trol. This trend is expected to continue Further.

In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

A mathematical model for estimating the liquid level in the hearth is presented. The analytical result was checked on a cold two-dimensional model and an additional boundary condition for the fundamental equation resulted. The applicability of the resultant equation was investigated on a cold model and a regression equation obtained for the average liquid level for Kashima No. 1 BF. Comparison of calculated and observed results were in fairly good agreement. It is concluded that the liquid level in the commercial furnace can be calculated from the measured values of pressure in the bosh and operating conditions.

Froth flotation processes use different surface properties of the minerals to be sorted. In an aqueous environment the hydrophobic mineral attaches selectively to air bubbles and is lifted to the surface of a separation vessel, while the tailings settle towards its bottom. Besides the surface properties, the hydrodynamic conditions play an important role. With respect to the hydrodynamics the flotation process can be divided, for simplicity, in two sub-processes. The attachment of hydrophobic particles to air bubbles, the so-called mineralisation, demands a large number of collisions and therefore high turbulences. The phase separation however needs a deterministic movement of both the particle-bubbles-aggregates and the tailings particles and therefore a quiescent flow field. The optimisation of the overall process requires a separation of both sub-processes, especially when fine particles have to be sorted. In conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells both sub-processes take place in the same turbulent volume. For this reason they suffer from a decreasing selectivity with decreasing particle size. In flotation columns the mineralisation of air bubbles and the phase separation are performed in a quiescent environment. This results in high concentrate grades and at the same time in a very slow attachment kinetics, which must, especially for fine particles, be counterbalanced by a long residence time of the slurry.

The Hilton Mine, 20 km north of Mount Isa was discovered in 1947. The underground mine has been a significant producer from 1989. The long development history is the result of complex orebody geometry, difficult metallurgy, dewatering problems and competition for development funds from the then expanding Isa Mine at Mount Isa. At present it produces 1.4 million tonnes annually. Its 21 million tonnes of reserves are necessary to supplement Isa Mine production.Hilton Mine is located in the Urquhart Shale formation of the Mount Isa Group, within the Mid Proterozoic Mount Isa Inlier. The seven developed orebodies have suffered strong structural deformation. Each orebody has a unique mixture of mineralogy and texture which effects ore value and metallurgical performance. These characteristics have proven useful for correlation purposes.The faulting and folding have caused difficulties with orebody interpretation, geomechanical complexities and has influenced the choice of mining methods: Initial cut and fill and open scope designs have given way to bench mining methods in response to better understanding of the eedloav and economic constraints.

Gold at Renco occurs in association with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and quartz and is confined to a series of brittle fractures and fault breccias (reefs) preferentially developed within an anastomosing ductile shear zone. During late Archaean crustal movements both the orebody and the enclosing host rocks were deformed within a series of east-north-east striking, southerly dipping, shear zones. The reefs within these shear zones are now texturally different to those away from the shear zones, and this difference is reflected by differences in the way the gold is distributed in the two reef types. These differences are not taken irto account by the software package currently being used to generate kriged plans of gold grade and reef thickness and this may explain some of the inaccuracies found in these plans.

Barrick Gold Corporation is proceeding with development of the Buzwagi Mine in the Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt District of Tanzania. The Buzwagi orebody occurs in the Nzega Shear zone within the Greenstone Belt and is hosted in a K-Feldspar rich granite in contact with mafic volcanic. The orebody presents 2.6 M ounces in 41 Mt of reserves, at 2.0 g/t. Over the ten year mine life, total material movement will be 261 Mt. The feasibility study was completed in 2006 and presented several technical challenges. Two principle challenges are grade control and the impact of dilution on the economic viability of the project. The principle challenges for grade control will be quality control and quality assurance in the sampling of the massive coarse grained granite, which comprises 70 per cent of the deposit. The principle challenge with dilution will be with the selective mining of the narrower mineralised zones contained within the mafic volcanics. This paper will focus on the mine planning methodology which has been applied including selective mine unit (SMU) and dilution estimation, net smelter revenue (NSR) calculation and the effects of cut-off grades to the project economics and mine schedule.

Opportunities to improve mill operations are often cited by mining companies and recognised in many concentrators spread throughout the world but are not always followed through. Copper-molybdenum concentrator operations are challenged by a continuously increasing list of detrimental factors. They include deteriorating ore characteristics and poor mineralogical information on deeper ores, water quality and availability, steel wear and increasing power costs. Rapidly declining productivity, sustainability and environmental factors, new taxes, mining industry global skill set shortages, to name but a few, must also be considered. The days of maximising value by just increasing production or simple cost cutting are fading and will not be sufficient for the future of more complex mineral processing operations and larger plants. As a result, FLSmidth’s Global Process Technology Group has launched a plant and process optimisation program based on mineralogical and metallurgical surveys.Copper-molybdenum concentrators of the future need a paradigm shift. Modelling and simulation tools alone are not the answer to complex mineralogical associations and larger scale equipment and operations. Detailed area by area review aimed at identifying process constraints in terms of equipment and operating practice in conjunction with robust diagnostic work, ie mineralogical and metallurgical characterisation, are mandatory for process optimisation. The navigational beacon, for all operations who want to remain competitive, will be ‘process efficiency’. Since the use of automated mineral analysers has become more readily available and reliable, mineralogical-metallurgical plant surveys have proven themselves as the most efficient tool for optimising plant performance.The following paper will illustrate how operations can move toward eliminating under-performing flow sheets, fixing run-away flotation conditions, maximising individual process equipment performance, preventing shortcuts in Bond work index testing which may cause the failure of comminution models and minimising costly and time-consuming ‘debottlenecking’. As previous plant surveys have shown, the net project cash flow can be increased by 50 to 200 per cent if a combination of robust ore characterisation and plant process mineralogy is performed. The combined plant survey approach has been demonstrated successfully in a multitude of operations. The reduction in man's contribution to the Greenhouse effect will only be achieved by a number of small steps. Some steps will absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in slightly greater quantities, others will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide generated. This paper deals with the reduction of carbon dioxide by improving the combustion efficiency of petroleum fuels. Until recently most reductions in fuel consumption and air pollution have been brought about through mechanical adjustments to combustion equipment. Since the development of tetraethyl lead, little has been done to chemically modify combustion reactions to improve fuel efficiency or reduce emissions. During the past five years Australian laboratory and field trials with ferrous picrate treatment have demonstrated significant and economic gains in the combustion efficiency of diesel fuels. These studies have revealed that even under ideal conditions in diesel engines, carbon monoxide (CO) momentarily saturates the combustion chamber. This state reduces combustion rates, peak pressure and power and increases the risk of pollution. Theoretical, laboratory and field data are presented which support the mechanism by which the ferrous catalyst accelerates the oxidation of CO to the terminal CO2 thus reducing fuel consumption and the undesirable combustion products accompanying the CO saturation of combustion environments. While this paper deals principally with diesel fuels commonly used in mining operations, the catalytic effect of the ferrous ion is also shown to significantly reduce fuel consumption by petrol engines thereby promising a means to reduce the much larger contributions to the Greenhouse gases by automobiles.

The usual focus of papers on fatty acid collector action in non-sulfide flotation is on the adsorption of the carboxylate and/or neutral molecule species at the mineral-solution interface. Little attention is paid as to whether or not the solution conditions correspond to true solutions, micellar and other self-assembly objects or precipitates. Our examination of the solution chemistry of the important fatty acid collector, oleic acid, has revealed that many, if not most investigators set their experimental conditions to be in micellar or precipitate domains while arguing, often by implication, that they have only solute species present. We have investigated the equilibrium solution domains usually encountered in studies of oleic acid flotation of such minerals as barite, calcite and fluorite. The alkaline earth-fatty acid and liquid oleic acid precipitate phases exert a strong influence on the solution chemistry, a fact not often appreciated in many studies.

Since 2019, the mine planning team at Olympic Dam has been establishing and maturing a shift from deterministic to probabilistic scheduling techniques. This paper outlines this journey undertaken by the mine planning team, key learnings from implementation and further work required to increase the level of planning maturity. Olympic Dam (OD) is a highly variable, polymetallic orebody with a vertically integrated value chain from operations to final product. The processing plant has a tight set of quality constraints which are managed through timing of stopes from varying parts of the orebody. Value is eroded for the operation when forecasted quality of the mine feed encounters disruptions from unplanned changes to the timing of stope starts. As production has moved from the historic Northern Mining Area into the more geologically complex Southern Mining Area, average stope size has reduced, resulting in increased mining fronts required to meet production targets. This has created a problem of increased schedule complexity and difficulties in identifying and communicating resource priorities within a large set of individual stope critical paths. The problem was approached by considering each stope as an individual project constructed by teams working across multiple projects at any one time. The operation could then be considered a multi-project environment with shared resources and enables the application of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) to the mine plan. Key to CCPM is the addition of time buffers to protect the critical path of a project form upstream or downstream processes. Implementation of time buffers protects the stope start date against compliance to plan variance. The monitoring of each time buffer consumption, as a proportion of total construction activities completed enables proactive prioritisation of resources. This resulted in an increase in the number of stopes starting in accordance with the mine plan, simplified communication of priorities to all levels of the operation, increased compliance to plan and a clear measure of schedule risk during planning routines.
