For multi-site mining companies, checking the quality and consistency of the data recorded in risk registers is important for confirming how well mine safety management systems have been implemented. However, this task is complicated by the differences in scope of the site, their particular nature, the complexity of the operations and many other factors that can introduce nuances to the characteristics of the risk registers. We present here an application of a technique called Causal Network Topology Analysis for comparing the quality and consistency of risk registers. By quality we refer to, for example: - missing causal relationships between risks - location of missing controls - focus of risk treatment strategies: prevention versus mitigation controls. By consistency we refer to how causally interdependent are the risk events. There are often causal interactions between the lines of a risk register that mean that the likelihood and consequence scores that are applied to each risk event are not independent. We measure this degree of interactions by: - proportion of independent scenarios per register - efficiency of risk treatment strategy comparison. This approach can indicate quality and consistency differences between registers irrespective of the actual details of the site or operation. This occurs by comparing aspects of the structure of a causal network extracted from how the risk events, causes, controls and consequences causally interact. In this work we compare pairs of registers to demonstrate the approach.

Five Hypotheses are given for factors influencing long-run metals price forecasts. 1 . Geologists succeed when given the money. 2. Better understanding of a metals market depresses its price. 3 . Statistical techniques get forecasts wrong. 4. Long-run metals prices are related to crustal abundance. 5 . Economic cycles affect metals prices more than is realised. These are then framed within the transition between eras as influenced by apparent long waves in economic activity. Innovation surges during the transition between eras. The transition to the 5th Wave since the Indus- trial Revolution 200 years ago is now underway. Finally, price projec- tions are given both for the 5th Wave and 200 years from now on the assumption that a similar monetary measure to today will be then extant.

As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Such knowledge can be used for future blasts in the same domain to increase long-term operational efficiency through slight modifications in drill pattern and initiation design.CITATION:Beyglou, A, Schunnesson, H, Johansson, D and Johansson, N, 2015. Digger Rocks is one of several nickel-bearing sulphide deposits localised within komaLiitic volcanics of the Forrestania Greenstone Bell within the Archaean YiIgam Block of Western Australia. Exploration and evaluation to April 1990 have delineated a resource, at a nominal cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Ni, of 1.9 Mt at 1.1 per cent Ni within a lensoid sulphide body which strikes NW, dips 50°SW, and occurs at a depth of 30 - 110 m below surface. There has been no production from any of the Forrestania nickel deposits to-date. The deposit, comprising both disseminated and massive sulphides, has maximum dimensions of 400 m strike, 115 m vertically and 90 m true width. Generally the massive sulphides occur at the base of the disseminated sulphides, on or close to the base of the Digger Rocks dunite. The two main massive sulphide lenses have maximum dimensions of 120 m strike, 75 m vertically and 16 m true width (northern lens) and 60 m strike, 25 m vertically and 4 m true width (southern lens). The average grades of the massive and disseminated sulphides are 5.9 per cent i and 1.2 per cent i respectively. The massive sulphides generally have sharp hangingwall and fOOlwall contacts and display strong internal grade anisolropy.The massive sulphides are mainly within the supergene zone and consist of violarite, pyrite and marcasite. The disseminated sulphides are mainly within the primary zone and consist of pentlandite, pyrrholite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration zones, up to six in number, are complex in detail. The sulphides are capped by an average of 30 m of sub-economic, leached, siliceous, oxidised material.A genetic model for the deposit is described which places Digger Rocks in Category 2 (sulphides in large layered dunite bodies) of the latest classification of komatiitic nickel sulphide deposits in the Yilgam Block of Western Australia by Hill and Gole (1990).

Nuggety gold-quartz reefs are characterised by localised, high-grades and in many cases coarse free-gold. Geometrical and grade complexities are often observed. The high-grade regions are generally erratic and have a low continuity; though may make the deposit economic. Viable grades are generally contained within discrete oreshoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade material. Drilling is an effective measure of geological continuity, however grade distribution can only be reliably obtained from underground development and bulk sampling. In general terms, only an inferred resource is likely to be estimated from surface drill data alone. Underground development, further drilling and probably bulk sampling will be required to delineate inferred and indicated resources. Closely spaced development with bulk sampling is likely to be the best way to determine a probable reserve. The resource evaluation process must driven by a clear geological model that should attempt to understand the controls to reef geometry and grade distribution. Geological interpretation has traditionally been undertaken in two-dimensions, though computer software is now being used to produce three-dimensional models. Grade interpolation has generally been undertaken using classical methods, typically weighted averages, zone of influence weighting and polygonal/sectional blocks. Tonnages can generally be calculated from diamond drill and development information with a reasonable degree of confidence. Grade is much more difficult to define with confidence because of its highly erratic and discontinuous nature. To account for variability it is recommended that a best estimate be reported within a grade range, as this more accurately reflects the uncertainties involved. Reporting should be undertaken within the framework of the JORC code, but should involve special consideration of grade reliability.

Static attachment of bubbles to solids is contrasted with dynamic attachment in flotation cells. The times of contact during particle-bubble collisions in dynamic attachment are compared with the induction time determinations and the kinetics of thinning of the liquid films separating solids and bubbles. The thinning is examined mainly in terms of electrostatic and dispersion (van der Waals) contributions to the disjoining pressure existing in the films. The local heterogeneity (on a molecular scale) of charge distribution invariably present at all interfaces (even at conditions of zero zeta potential) calls for some means to minimize possible electrostatic repulsions which arise when the electrical double layer at the air-bubble interface begins to overlap that present at the solid surface, on encounter between particles and bubbles. It is postulated that dipoles of frother molecules, owing to their ability to "flip over" (polarise), replace localized electrostatic repulsion by attraction within fractions of a milli- second, as long as the structure of the frother molecules is sufficiently "bulky" to maintain diffuse films (of mixed collector-frother) at the air/liquid interface of bubbles. The relaxation times of dipoles (signifying their "flipping over" ability) have to be shorter than the collision times between particles and bubbles for particle-bubble attachment to be facilitated under dynamic Conditions.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

Research into the dynamic properties of ground support elements continues to grow at a global level, given the increasing importance of this field of application within underground hard rock mining. Measuring the mechanical response of such elements under the rapid onset of simulated rock burst loads forms the basis for this experimental work, typically utilising gravitational drop testing methods. This field of research is fundamentally driven by an increasing need for dynamic performance data, given the constant evolution of rock bolting product designs, materials selection, combination testing and specific application needs based on ground types and loading scenarios. A smaller number of globally recognised dynamic test facilities have predominantly lead research within this arena, typically in association with academic institutes, larger industry groups and government research institutes. However, due to the increasing requirement for dynamic performance data, additional facilities have now emerged in order to satisfy the overall demand for test work. These newer facilities are more typically associated with suppliers to the underground hard rock industry, with experimental designs looking to replicate, at least in part, the work of the primary facilities. For standardisation, repeatability and calibration purposes, the cross validation of test data between primary and secondary facilities becomes an obvious and important consideration across this field of research. This paper outlines the development of a new dynamic drop test facility for testing rock bolts, including the structural design and associated high speed data capture system. Based on the utilisation of identical bolt types, material grades, anchoring systems and decoupled ‘free-lengths’, comparative data has been generated to provide cross validation of the new test facility against data generated by a globally recognised primary facility. The cross validation of data provides increasing confidence in the repeatability and accuracy of the new facility as activity continues towards the provision of further experimental test work.

With a focus on safe productive tonnes, there has been an ongoing drive to increase the productivity of the mining fleet across BHP Billiton. In response, a team from the Iron Ore business was formed to review all aspects of the end-to-end drill and blast process and to challenge conventional practices that limit production efficiency. As a result of the outcomes of this work, a number of initiatives were identified to improve operational practices that have also delivered significant cost savings.One such initiative was to increase pattern size to a minimum of 1 Mt where practicable, thereby creating ‘megablast’ as a new standard across all mines. To achieve blasts of this size, the team had to overcome the complex problem of integrating wall control into the megablasts.With traditional blasting techniques, the key strategy, which is also historically inefficient but was thought to be integral to having stable, safe walls, was to utilise the trim blasting/modified production blasts technique (ie narrow blasts along the pit wall designed to ‘peel off’ the material while minimising the effects of vibration and charge confinement on wall integrity).Small traditional trim patterns comprise three to four rows of production holes and one or two rows of batter/buffer holes of reduced diameter that require the firing face to be completely exposed before blasting. This is an extremely slow process that requires a lot of resources for very little tonnage while adding additional expense to the final cost per tonne.This paper will show how the megablast approach was developed to control damaging vibration and confinement effects, flyrock and fragmentation while having the largest possible blast that includes wall control. The new practice is based on a theory that involves the initiation point and control row being the second row of holes from the pit wall itself. Adjusted charges in vented batter and buffer holes help to achieve an optimal toe design, and at the same time create a zone of broken ground that absorbs damaging vibrations formed by the attached production blast of any size, whether it is a straight wall or a multi-angled complex pit shell design.Using the new style of blasting has allowed an increase in the size of the patterns from an average of 300 kt to over 1 Mt whilst maintaining pit wall integrity. Case studies will be presented showing drill, charge and tie-in designs with the presentation having additional blast videos, including overall shots of blasts and in-close footage of what happens behind the blast at the crest of the planned catchment berm.The paper will also demonstrate the flow-on effect of using this style of blasting to reduce operational costs associated with other downstream processes, such as the reduced requirements for pattern preparation, an increase in productive digging, reduced maintenance costs and a decrease in fuel burn for equipment.CITATION:Green, B, 2015. In today’s mining environment the use of heavy mechanical devices and other high-tech electronic devices like two-way radios, cellular phones and even automated mining systems, form a vital part of the daily operations of a mining site. These human-made devices and some of the naturally occurring events, like lightning and gamma radiation, can have negative effects on electronic detonators and the associated control equipment.On larger mining operations the necessity to move the point of safety for blasting further away from the blast area, introduced remote firing via radio frequencies for electronic detonator systems. Other influences on electronic detonators can be abuse or ignorance. To ensure the safety of the end-user, an electronic detonator must be resistant to some common mistakes that users can make. One of main concerns here is resistance to static discharge or incorrect wiring. Despite the daily use of electronic detonator solutions, scepticism and concern still exists amongst those who believe the system raises the risk of a premature initiation of the blast through some form of interference trigger.This paper will help users understand how electronic detonators and the associated control equipment protects itself from external influences. Focus will be on protection schemes to counter static and over-voltage discharge and methods to ensure protection of secure wireless radio links and detonator communications. With well engineered communication systems and solid static and over-voltage protection, an electronic detonator system can be more reliable and safer than other detonator systems. The following main points will be discussed:what makes a detonator an electronic detonator,static electricity and over-voltage protection,the general influence of electromagnetic energy on the detonator,the influence of lightning on detonators,the protection of radio communication’s links as used by remote firing equipment, andthe safety protection features built into remote firing equipment.

There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. The author offers a view about the estimation of inferred resources, and provides data believed pertinent to the proper valuation of Ballarat Goldfields Ltd Ballarat East Project.

The binary indicator coding of assay and lithological data according to a single criterion or multiple criteria is a powerful technique for representing mineralised shapes through the modelling of probabilities. This can be as simple as using a single indicator to model the probability of occurrence of a condition, usually a grade threshold or a lithology, but it can also be used with a number of categories. Case studies are presented to show the power of this approach, where the geological controls on mineralisation or on the distribution of a rocktype or alteration, often coupled with mineralisation, are unclear. The categorical approach is often used as a de facto grade filter in disseminated or stockwork mineralisation. The ultimate expression of the indicator formalism is in multiple indicator kriging (MIK), where a conditional distribution of probabilities is generated for each estimation panel. This has applications in recoverable resource estimation, as the input for continuous or categorical simulation, where the distribution of sample grades is multimodal, or when there are superimposed mineralisation events with different orientations. However, in some cases, MIK is being used as an excuse for ignoring a quality geological interpretation. Examples from the public domain show the abuse of the categorical and MIK approaches to modelling probabilities, together with a plea for greater consideration of the geology.

The exposed high face of Kerr's Quarry has dominated the township of Ferntree Gully for half a century. The near perpendicular face of bare dacite rock is a crumbling scar in an area of significant natural beauty. Apart from being unsightly, the face is a hazard for any person who approaches too close to its base or to the top edge. The height and the precipitous nature of this man made wall of rock is hazardous indeed. (fig. 1) The rock face is on the municipal boundary between the Shire of Sherbrooke and the City of Knox. This boundary was drawn when partition of the Shire of Ferntree Gully took place. There are many advantages in benching back the wall of the quarry but to do so the operation, located in Knox would need to extend into Sherbrooke. There are planning difficulties involved in such a manoeuvre, but during 1972, at a meeting of Cabinet Ministers, it was agreed that the matter be resolved.

In todayÆs evolving and globalised world, mining companies are being pressured to move beyond compliance towards long-term sustainability and sustainable development. Companies are expected to æengageÆ communities and measure the success of these engagements without a clear understanding of æhowÆ to do this. This move, away from compliance, develops more of a focus on sustainability and æcommunityÆ social responsibility rather than corporate social responsibility. This shift leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduce the incidence of costly delays, and promote good global citizenship for companies. The process of æengagingÆ communities in mining project design and development leads to sustainable development, a stronger license to operate, and a reduction in social and political risk. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be æengagedÆ in the project development and risk assessment processes as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this æengagementÆ and manage this risk will be discussed.

Two adjacent open pits in Mali hosted by deeply weathered saprolitic materials were mined consecutively over the course of approximately 12 months. During excavation, both pits experienced significant displacement and tension cracking as the result of deeper than expected depth of weathering coupled with relatively steep slope angles and significant groundwater. In response, geotechnical and operations teams overcame numerous monitoring challenges with prisms and radar to develop a simple and effective monitoring system coupled to a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) which enabled continued safe operations while reducing ore loss. Observations of previous slope performance of these two pits allowed for greater confidence in empirical failure runout calculations that was used to specify the standoff widths for the exclusion zones in the pit. Back analysis of the slope as-built performance after the first indications of slope distress was also conducted. The back analysis was used to confirm rock mass parameters for modelling while being utilised as a reality check for the stability analysis. The stability analysis indicated that leaving a large step-out or buttress would not prevent the displacement, resulting in some ore being sacrificed to ensure the safety of personnel. Key learnings from this experience highlight the importance of: • up-to-date geological interpretation of the depth of weathering • ensuring slope design guidance is reviewed and updated as latest information (ie geology and monitoring) is received • having multiple complementary slope monitoring methods to ensure redundancy • ensuring visual observations and as-built performance are utilised as a reality check to provide greater confidence in stability analysis and design guidance.

"Inrush of water is always an issue, especially for mines located in heavy rainfall areas. Nowadays, mining companies and research institutes have developed many advanced technologies for study and analysis of hydrological processes. In this paper, an advanced method is introduced, which uses the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) data in the Geographical Information System (GIS) platform to simulate the stream distributions around two specific mines: Super Pit and Griffin coalmine in Western Australia. The impact of this approach is important because it reduces the time and economic cost by creating a high spatial resolution hydrological map in the specific areas. The study identifies the flow path of the run-off water, which helps in adopting a suitable water management plan surrounding the case study mines. The results match with the ground reality. Based on the results, the stream structure around Griffin coalmine is more complicated than that of Super Pit. The bifurcation ratio and drainage density are computed to estimate the subsoil permeability characteristics of the two mines. Recommendations have been put forward to prevent and reduce the potential risks of water accumulation around the open pit mines.Citation:Ghosh, A K, 2016. Oxidised pellets have become an indispensable high-quality charge for blast furnaces (BF) due to their uniform particle size, high iron grade, high mechanical strength, good metallurgical performance, as well as relatively low energy consumption and gaseous pollutant emissions in pellet production. Nevertheless, due to the rapid development of the global steel industry, highquality pellet feeds are becoming more and more scarce. In order to broaden the source of pellet feeds and reduce the production cost of pellets, more and more steel mills are going to use coarse iron ore fines with relatively low iron grade and low impurities for preparation of desirable pellet feeds through a typical wet grinding-settling-filtering process. In this work, the grinding, settling and filtering behaviour of Brazilian and Australian iron ore fines are studied and compared, aiming at finding out the internal relationship between the mineralogical characteristics of different iron ore types and their grinding-settling-filtering performance. The results show that the grindability is heavily dependent on the hardness of iron ores, which is governed by the mineralogical characteristics of the raw materials. Usually the higher the hardness, the more grinding energy is required. Except for Brazilian specularite, Australian hematite-goethite type iron ore fines and Brazilian hematite ore fines exhibit good grindability with a Bond Work Index of about 10–15 kW•h/t. In addition, the settling and filtering performance of ground iron ores are largely affected by the density, mineralogical characteristics of iron ore fines (eg, quantity of clay minerals and goethite and porosity of ore particles), grinding fineness, etc. Generally, iron ore fines with higher density, lower quantity of soft minerals (clay and goethite) and larger particle size give superior settling and filtering performance. For iron ore fines with inferior grinding, settling and filtering performance, applying more energy-efficient grinding techniques, blending with ore types with good settling and filtering performance can reduce grinding energy consumption and improve settling and filtration rates to maximise the productivity of equipment and lower the operational cost

This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.
