Dust emissions from mining, material processing and ship loading operations (fugitive dust sources) are an environmental issue of increasing concern to both government regulators and the community. The main concerns relate to potential amenity, health and environmental impacts from the emissions. Therefore it is imperative that mining/ processing operations, as part of their overall environmental management, reduce fugitive particulate emissions to as low a level as is practicably possible. This technical paper outlines the mechanisms that lead to fugitive particulate emissions, the importance of understanding the exact cause of fugitive emissions, monitoring methods that can be used to quantify the emissions from specific sources, the use of atmospheric dispersion modelling in dust management and innovative dust management strategies including predictive meteorology and proactive management.

At the Century mine in North West Queensland, MMG produces lead and zinc concentrates. The current production rate is close to 500 000 t of zinc per annum. Graphite is the main gangue in the orebody and a substantial quantity of chemicals are used to achieve an acceptable depression of graphite and other gangue materials in the current operation. In the future, it is anticipated that the content of graphite in the orebody will increase while the zinc grade will gradually drop. This scenario illustrates the importance of an optimised suite of flotation chemicals to maximise concentrate grade and recovery. As an alternative to the current reagent suite where dextrin is used to depress graphite, laboratory test work and subsequent plant trials were conducted with alternative depressants. These depressants facilitated both graphite depression and elevated zinc grades in the rougher concentrate. As an added benefit, it was also observed that the silica content in the zinc concentrate was reduced in the presence of the biopolymer selected for the plant trials. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

"The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. The zeta potential on the surface of activated orit carbon were estimated in lhe presence of selected cations and anions that are normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area of Western Australia. Additions of such ions to solution of varying pH shifted the isoelectric point of carbon from pH 4.45 to pH 7-8.3, while the anions moved Lhc isoelectric point 10 less than pH 3.2. In the presence of gold cyanide SoluLion additions of spectator ions indicated the isoelecLric poilll to be aL pH less than 3.2; the only exception was for Fe" ion where the isoelecLric point was at pH 5.9. The decrease in zeta potential appeared to be related to the counter-ions present. The decrease may also be related to the adsorption of hydroxyl ion complexes that are likely to be formed when cations are present in the solutions.Gold adsorpLion by activated orit carbon from gold cyanide solution seem to be indicated by the magnitude of zeta potential on the carbon surface. An attempt is made to relate gold adsorption and zeta potential on carbon surface with the pH of the medium.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. A turbulent flotation model has been developed by considering the subprocesses of collision, attachment, detachment, and froth recovery. AbrahamsonÆs model (1975) of infinite Stokes number is used to model collision, while the attachment and detachment subprocesses are modelled by considering the kinetic energies required to overcome the energy barriers and the work of adhesion, respectively. The energy barriers are determined by considering various surface forces, including electrostatic, dispersion and hydrophobic forces, while the kinetic energies are determined from the particle velocities at close separation distances from air bubbles. The latter has been determined by modifying the turbulent root-mean-square (RMS) velocities of Liepe and Moeckel (1976) and Schubert (1999) in view of a lubrication theory. In calculating the RMS velocities, it is assumed that a flotation cell is subdivided into low and high energy dissipation zones. The model predictions made by varying various hydrodynamic and surface chemistry parameters are consistent with flotation practice.

Open stoping is one of the widely adopted methods in underground bulk mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sublevel in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. A mass stope blast may involve blasting rock from multi-level drift rounds and displacing the muck to specific locations in order to allow safe and easy access for ore removal. This paper presents a strategic mass stope blast that took place at a large lead and zinc underground mine in eastern Canada. The blast consisted of more than 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different sublevels. The challenge lay in the control of ground vibration and muck movement using precise timing to complete the blasting within 6.5 seconds. During this time span, sufficient voids were created in each level to allow the muck to move from the upper to the lower levels in sequential order across the six mining blocks without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement as well as the application of electronic detonators. These detonators provided the means to accomplish the desired firing sequence including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modelling concept is also described in the paper.

Seeking to reduce the likelihood of uncontrolled personnel entry into the operating footprint of a dragline, Coronado Global Resources initiated a review of proximity detection systems currently available and equipment interactions in and around dragline operational areas. At the time of the assessment, there were no established personnel proximity detection systems in compliance with functional safety standards for large machinery in Australia. Our primary objective was to guarantee a functionally safe outcome, particularly by implementing a performance-level-rated system in accordance with AS4024 (Safety of Machinery series of Australian Standards). Applying appropriate detection technologies, the goal was to reduce the residual operating risk for machine-to-machine and machine-to-personnel interactions. A comprehensive analysis of available or in-development technologies was conducted, and a layered approach (demonstrated in Figure 1) was adopted to achieve the desired risk reduction by segregating the sensing zones into distinct areas using diverse and disparate technologies consisting of radar (short); light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (medium); and optical (long). To address the potential limitations of each technology, overlapping layered sensing zones were designed. With LIDAR and optical using two distinct artificial intelligence (AI) systems to classify detections, these were specifically trained to handle the unique environments of a mining operation.

At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. Mine operation strategies are commonly optimised with a net present value (NPV) maximisation objective. There are well known properties of a typical mining project optimised for NPV, including high production rates and declining cut-off grade schedules. In practice, however, frequently there are operations that diverge from such NPV-maximising properties. Although a range of reasons for this can be at play, one possible explanation is that operators intuitively adjust their strategies to compensate for the flaws inherent to NPV maximisation. In particular, NPV analysis does not reflect the benefits of managerial flexibility inherent in a mining plan. Real options valuation (ROV) is an alternative approach that addresses this issue. We compare the properties of NPV and ROV optimisation solutions generated for the same scenario. Our simple case study demonstrates that the presence of real operating options in the optimisation model not only entails increased project value as expected, but also tends to encourage lower processing capacity (with lower associated capital cost), higher cut-off grades and greater use of stockpiles.CITATION:Elkington, T and Gould, J, 2012. In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

The Ernest Henry Mine is an open pit copper-gold mining operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current concentrator throughput of approximately ten million tonnes per annum. The pit will cease mining towards the end of 2010. Extensive surface diamond drilling has confirmed an extension of the orebody to depths of 1000 m below surface. A prefeasibility study was commissioned in late 2006 to investigate underground mining options with the preferred mining method being an inclined sublevel cave. In February 2008 mining of a decline commenced in conjunction with a feasibility study to further investigate the project. Work from the prefeasibility study indicates that an underground crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft could be utilised to crush and transport broken ore from the sublevel cave workings to the concentrator. The study suggests that a production rate of five million tonnes per annum could be achieved and sustained for up to ten years. Ventilation designs and requirements will form a large section of the feasibility study. This paper will detail investigations of preliminary ventilation network designs of the proposed sublevel cave. Work has been completed using both Ventsim and VumA ventilation simulation packages. Ventsim was used to provide preliminary estimations and suggest alternatives for: surface fan duties;airflow characteristics (direction, velocity, pressure and quantity); andventilation network design in key mine areas. With mining activities reaching depths in excess of 1000 m below surface an analysis of heat conditions should be conducted. The VumA software package was used to model the thermal properties of the ventilation system. This model will provide a basis for the preliminary decisions on refrigeration requirements for the mine.

A projected image is not always a true representation of a situation, or indeed an industry. This is often the case of the mining and minerals industry, which has frequently been portrayed in a negative light with a male dominance stigma attached. However, these issues can be combated for both the industry and its future, current undergraduate students, through undergraduate industry experience. In particular, vacation work enables female students to dispel many myths surrounding the industry and realise that the mining and minerals field offers career development for both genders. This paper will discuss how vacation work enables students to make important career decisions even before they have graduated. Industry experience provides undergraduates with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge relevant to their field of study. Additionally it allows students to observe the nature of the industry and the sacrifices necessary to advance careers. The prior insights into an industry are relevant to all students, but particularly female students, who might otherwise be dissuaded from a career in mining. This paper is written from the perspective of two female undergraduate students studying Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering.

As the global demand for metal values expands, it becomes increasingly important to create more sustainable mining operations. Consequently, considerable research and technology development is required to produce processes which are both more energy efficient and have a minimal environmental impact. One potential technology is the utilisation of microwave pre-treatment to reduce the energy requirements in comminution. Microwaves can preferentially heat the valuable mineral phases in an ore and the resulting differential thermal expansion leads to the formation of microfractures along the grain boundaries. As a result of the preferential heating, ore competency is reduced, mineral liberation is enhanced, a coarser grind size can be employed, and plant throughput can be increased. Furthermore, microwave pre-treatment can be combined with advanced ore sorting, to decrease the quantity of gangue material processed downstream and hence reduce tailings production. Previous studies on the microwave treatment of ores over the last 30 years have mainly been limited to low power bench-scale studies and there is a paucity of information on pilot and/or commercial scale studies. In the present research, the microwave heating behaviours of over 40 ores have been studied at the bench-scale. These results were used to generate a database, from which a unique classification system was developed. This system was used to rank the amenability of any given ore for microwave pre-treatment. This knowledge can be employed to predict the performance of the ores in the high-power pilot scale tests and thus can be used as a pre-screening tool. The effects of high-power microwave pre-treatment on grindability and liberation were reported. Additionally, the ore sorting potential was evaluated using a combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and microwave infrared (MW/IR).

In developing mineral resources, the focus typically centres on the management of identified social and environmental impacts and compliance with regulatory requirements. However, opportunities to protect and enhance the environment and communities are most effective in the planning and design phases. Achieving the objective of integrating sustainability considerations as an element of design decision making requires that the design criteria be technically sound, relevant to the project and applicable to desired design outcomes. This is particularly important for projects employing virtual teaming, where design engineers may be geographically dispersed and are unlikely to be familiar with site specific sustainability challenges and opportunities. This paper documents the approach taken by BHP Billiton to incorporate sustainability principles, objectives and guidelines in design criteria for the Olympic Dam Expansion (ODX) project. It describes the range of inputs used in defining sustainability objectives which interface in a framework that is dynamic and transferable to other mining projects and to engineering design in general. The Sustainability in Design Criteria document distils statutory requirements, corporate standards, lessons learned and leading industry practice into a single coherent framework that supports engineers to approach problem solving as a holistic and integrated exercise with a long term perspective. The framework also serves to improve linkages between internal stakeholders by fostering greater communication, collaboration and innovation to deliver more sustainable outcomes through the design process.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. The necessity of effective dust suppression measures during excavation work is just as uncontroversial in tunnelling as it is in mining. In many respects, in fact, the applied technology is comparable. Notwith- standing, given more careful appraisal, it becomes evident that very different starting conditions exist in both these fields: In mining, there are for instance, well organised firms, which in many cases have been active for several decades, carrying out the required drivage and winning operations - and although there are also experienced firms in tunnelling, these generally speaking form a joint venture in order to accomplish a certain project. These "tunnelling firms" which are formed for a short term, normally only exist for a period of two-to three years. They con- stantly reorganise themselves: from the site supervising engineers by way of the foremen and shift overseers to the gangs working on site. The "firm's headquarters" are also re- located when a new project is started up. Then of course, there is often pronounced fluctua- tion among the crews of a single tunnelling project. Seen from this point of view, a safety expert in tunnelling has a far more difficult task than one in mining. He has not the advantage of knowing every corner of the mine for years if not decades on end, of being familiar with the overall organisation of the enterprise let alone knowing many of the men at the face. This ideal prerequisite for effec- tive decisions pertaining to suitable measures for industrial safety and accident prevention taking all weaknesses into consideration given the interplay of the most varied system com- ponents, can practically only be arrived at in mining.

Change and its relationship with the introduction of new technology is a constant of human history. The mining industry has many examples of this relationship. This record contrasts with its present day struggles to move beyond a public perception of being just ‘dirty, dumb and dangerous’. The drivers for the introduction of new technology are frequently listed as the occupational health and safety of people working in the mines, reductions in direct operating costs, and increases in productivity.This paper discusses the issues that a mining business needs to deal with to implement new technology with the best possible conditions for success. It comments on how the strategic and tactical components of technology planning relate to and interact with change management. The central discussion is directed at the role that people play in the successful implementation of new technology. The introduction of autonomous underground haulage equipment provides a background for the discussion of this topic.The paper uses case study references, equipment supplier information and research findings.
