Understanding mining-induced surface movement and fissures is critical for environmental protection and geological prevention. In this study, image recognition algorithms, satellite remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry (UAVP) were combined to identify surface movement and fissures caused by mining, and a case study was conducted in a coalmine in western China, and the following conclusions were obtained.

This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. Faced with the need to improve workplace conditions in both its development and production headings in its existing K1 orebody, as well as its new K Link and K2 orebodies, the Kencana mine in Indonesia took the novel approach of reversing the ventilation on most of its access ramp by outcasting up the ramp to the portal. Working levels were then fed with fresh air via auxiliary fans sealed into the current surface ‘egress’ intake raises (ladderways) or another small surface intake raisebore rather than from fans hung in the ramp as in the past. Outcasting the portal provided a substantial increase in the total mine exhaust capacity allowing fewer levels to be ventilated in series and significantly improving conditions, especially in the most difficult workplaces to ventilate. It also reduced the consequences if there was to be a fire on a vehicle in the ramp. The same system using the ramp as an exhaust is also intended to be used as part of the final ventilation solution for the new K2 orebody which also uses a novel single surface ventilation shaft that is vertically split into separate intake and exhaust compartments using a concrete brattice. Using the main ramp as an exhaust has potential application in many other operations in Australia using surface ramps which otherwise frequently suffer from overuse of series ventilation circuits and poor working conditions at the mine bottom.

The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

In most underground mines, the ventilation system is a significant portion of the total mine capital and operating cost and the largest consumer of underground electrical power. The effectiveness of the ventilation system has a major bearing on the safety, health, comfort and morale of underground personnel, and has a critical role in meeting production targets and therefore business revenue. Perhaps the most important component of the primary ventilation system is the primary fan. Correct performance testing of the primary fan during the warranty period is important not only to ensure the mine has obtained the asset that it paid for and can therefore deliver on the fanÆs crucial safety and economic role in the future of the mine, and to provide a justification for releasing final performance warranty payments to the supplier, but also to provide a benchmark or baseline against which to assess future performance issues. As there are at least three potential international standards available to measure fan performance, there has been considerable confusion regarding which of these to use for testing primary mine fans, and also the correct allowances and tolerances to use. This paper provides guidance on which standards to use for different applications, how the standards should be interpreted, what allowances and tolerances are reasonable, and other important issues to be resolved with the fan supplier prior to making a contract award. This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

The authors have presented their ideas for developing a powder sampling device in the I-Corps™ program sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is an intensive customer discovery program developed to increase the economic impact of the research sponsored by NSF.The I-Corps™ program requires performing at least 100 interviews with potential customers in various industries. These interviews are essential to establish the need for a particular product or solution, and identify potential commercialisation partners and competition. The interviews have revealed the absence of Theory of Sampling (TOS) principles in many companies. The interviews are designed to identify the difficulties associated with current sampling practices that do not meet TOS principles.The I-Corps™ program is a significant challenge for scientists who often avoid discussing a concept in fear of losing their research idea. The program teaches how to obtain information without releasing the important intellectual property related to a product development idea. The I-Corps™ methods have been used to discover the prevailing ideas on sampling in various industries.I-Corps™ also teaches how to present ideas to investors; another significant challenge for a scientist. It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. Aberfoyle's Hellyer Division has filtered very fine flotation concentrates using two different makes of pressure filter. At the Luina concentrator a Larox pressure filter was used to treat a combined Pb + Zn or bulk concentrate. At the Hellyer concentrator two Lasta pressure filters are being used to filter copper/silver, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Operating parameters and performance at both operations are described. In both concentrators it was found that correct cloth selection was critical and that cloth failures contributed significantly to downtime. Thorough preventative maintenance progammes were required to ensure adequate availability of both makes of filter.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

The predominant phase in most Marra Mamba, channel iron deposits and detrital iron ore deposits is goethite. Goethite abundant iron ore fines tend to have complex mineralogical associations and fine dissemination of gangue material. These ores are typically challenging to process using conventional beneficiation methods. With declining ore grades, there is a need to develop new processing routes for low-grade goethitic ores/fines.Comparative process amenability studies were carried out using two different processing options to recover iron with low alumina and silica content from a low-grade goethite-abundant iron ore fines (-2 mm) sample from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The first option involved dehydroxylation at 350°C and 400°C, followed by grinding dehydroxylated samples to 100 per cent passing 106 µm and magnetic separation. The second option was processing raw sample by gravity separation using a Floatex density separator. The performances of the two processes are discussed in terms of the iron grade-recovery responses, and an optimal processing route is proposed based on the findings from these tests.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Raynlyn, T, 2015. A critical step in open cut coal mining is clean removal of the overburden. This is usually achieved by drilling, blasting and digging. A key part of this process being successful is to stop drilling at the correct blast ‘stand-off distance’. The stand-off distance is the distance between the base of the drilled blasthole and the top of the coal horizon to be mined. Having this correct provides a protective cap of rock above the coal horizon so that the blast will fracture all the overburden without damaging the coal horizon or mixing it with the overburden. Drilling beyond the correct stand-off distance causes the blast to continue into the coal horizon, damaging it and mixing it with the overburden, leading to significant losses of coal product. Conversely, drilling short of the correct stand-off distance results in additional work to remove the intact overburden.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

Reliable face support pressure is necessary for shield driven tunnels in cohesionless soils to prevent excessive ground movements. This paper presents experimental work on stability of a tunnel face using transparent soil models aiming to obtain magnitude of tunnel face minimum supporting pressure, failure pattern and extension of failed zone. A model tunnel was preinstalled in transparent soil which was supported at the face by means of water pressure. Tests were performed by reducing supporting pressure until collapse occurred. Model tests were sliced optically with laser sheet and images were captured for every decrement in tunnel supporting pressure. Later, these images were analysed by digital image correlation (DIC) and vector fi elds of incremental displacements were obtained. Values of minimum support pressures were given for different cover/diameter (C/D) ratios. Geometry of the failure zones depicted for different (C/D) values and appeared to be of chimney shape with a limited extension front of the face. A minimum support pressure was achieved with support pressures as low as 10 ± 1 per cent of the effective vertical stress at the tunnel axis. The stability of the tunnel face was related to the coefficient of active earth pressure with C/D ratio having a small effect on the magnitude of required pressure at collapse. In general, results of the study were in agreement with current knowledge of full-scale situations.

Underground fires represent a constant threat to the safety of underground personnel. Miners in the immediate vicinity may face intense heat, blinding smoke, toxic fumes, fall of ground and other direct effects of a fire. However, the vast majority of victims never actually see the fire, and are overcome either by deadly fumes in the ventilating current or by asphyxiation. The mine ventilation system, which maintains a sustainable atmosphere to the working places, can transport products of combustion with equal efficiency. Miners who are remotely situated from a fire may be forced to evacuate considerable distances, through dense smoke and fumes, or even become cut-off from escape. Additionally, miners may become confused by unfamiliar ventilation characteristics caused by fires. Conveyor belts are widely used for transporting minerals in mines as well as in many other industrial situations. Because they contain large amounts of polymeric materials their use in certain environments, especially coal mines, but also in steel works, power stations and other enclosed areas must be controlled to minimise the fire risk. Over last nine years there have been 60 fires in underground mines in the UK alone and that of these, half have been associated with conveyors. This paper summarises the results obtained from a recent research project that has developed a preliminary computational thermal and fluid dynamic model to represent the spread of flame along a typical conveyor belt used in UK deep coal mines. The results of these models have been calibrated against a series of experimental tests performed within a surface fire test gallery. An improved knowledge of the burn characteristics and rate of release of the products of combustion from conveyor belt fires will assist in the development of better fire detection and fire fighting techniques.

The paper provides a brief review of the multivariate uniform conditioning and the localised multivariate uniform conditioning techniques and presents a case study based on a porphyry copper gold deposit in Peru. Two other important scenarios have been investigated and will be particularly emphasised: The recovered selective mining unit (SMU)s depend on a combination of copper and gold content, which can be expressed by means of ænet smelter returnsÆ (NSR). Two approaches are compared. Firstly, the application of a composite cut-off on NSR on the joint distribution of each grade and the application of uniform conditioning to three variables is investigated, ie for the first approach NSR is used as the main variable. The second approach considers copper as the main variable. In the case of multiple domains the procedure used to apply the technique to process mixed panels is clarified and recommendations are made.
